- Abstract
Waterbirds play a vital role in balancing aquatic ecosystems. Regular studies of their conservation status are crucial. Three major wetlands: Karnali River, Geruwa River, and Badhaiya Lake were surveyed from 2011 – 2016 and 2021 to assess the species and sites’ long-term status. We counted all water birds in these areas using the point count method in Badhaiya Lake and the Line transect method for river tran-sects of Karnali and Geruwa. Shannon-Weiner diversity index, Margalef richness index, and Pilou evenness index were calculated for each year and site to understand diversity and richness patterns over time and space. A total of 86 species were observed with an average number of species of 1027.02 per year. The relative abundance of the species showed fluctuations over the study period. The most abundant species was the Ruddy Shelduck (744.91 individuals/year), followed by the Lesser Whistling Duck (494.25). While the Ruddy Shelduck population increased, the Black Stork and Asian Wolly Neck species declined. Among the sites, Badhaiya Lake exhibited the highest Margalef richness index, Pilou evenness index, and Shannon-Weiner diversity index compared to Karnali and Geruwa Rivers. Due to its species richness and waterbird abundance, continuous monitoring and conservation efforts should be prioritized for the site.

- Abstract
Detailed, comprehensive, and timely reporting on population health by underlying causes of disability and premature death is crucial to understanding and responding to complex patterns of disease and injury burden over time and across age groups, sexes, and locations. The availability of disease burden estimates can promote evidence-based interventions that enable public health researchers, policy makers, and other professionals to implement strategies that can mitigate diseases. It can also facilitate more rigorous monitoring of progress towards national and international health targets, such as the Sustainable Development Goals. For three decades, the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) has filled that need. A global network of collaborators contributed to the production of GBD 2021 by providing, reviewing, and analysing all available data. GBD estimates are updated routinely with additional data and refined analytical methods. GBD 2021 presents, for the first time, estimates of health loss due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

4. Evaluation of SARS-Cov-2 neutralizing antibody among Sinopharm Vero Cell (BBIBP-CorV) vaccinated medical students

Information regarding seropositivity and vaccine efficacy among medical students is scarce. This study aims to detect the status of SARS-CoV-2 neutralizing antibodies among the Sinopharm’s Vero Cell (BBIBP-CorV) vaccinated medical students. A prospective, cross-sectional study was carried out among medical students of Gandaki Medical College Teaching Hospital, Pokhara, Nepal from March through August 2022. The level of SARS-CoV-2 serum- neutralizing IgG antibody was measured and its relation with participants’ age and sex, duration of vaccination, and any comorbid condition was determined. A total of 110 medical students were included in the final analysis, the majority being females (65.5%) and the mean age is 23.1 ±3.2 years. Most of the students (96.4%) had neutralizing antibodies against SARS-CoV-2. Among the 29 (26.36%) students who received a booster dose, the positivity rate was 100%. The mean IgG levels were 9.57 ±9.58 μg/ml and 2.91 ±2.47 μg/ml among students receiving an additional booster dose and among those not receiving it, respectively. In the cohort receiving a booster dose of the vaccine, the average value of neutralizing IgG antibodies was high. In contrast, the ones not receiving it, the titers were low and showed a declining trend. Though the dose strategy of the Sinopharm vaccine is effective, booster vaccination may be an important strategy to ensure protection among medical students, who are at high risk of COVID-19 due to constant patient exposure during their training. Further studies should assess vaccine efficacy among individuals who received other vaccines as well.

5. Zein-Coated Zn Metal Particles-Incorporated Nanofibers: A Potent Fibrous Platform for Loading and Release of Zn Ions for Wound Healing Application

- Abstract
Metal particles incorporated into polymer matrices in various forms and geometries are attractive material platforms for promoting wound healing and preventing infections. However, the fate of these metal particles and their degraded products in the tissue environment are still unknown, as both can produce cytotoxic effects and promote unwanted wound reactions. In this study, we develop biodegradable fibrous biomaterials embedded with metal particles that have an immune activation functions. Initially, biodegradable zinc (Zn) nanoparticles were modified with zein (G), a protein derived from corn. The zein-coated zinc particles (Z–G) were then embedded in polycaprolactone (P) fibers at different weight ratios to create fibrous biomaterials via electrospinning, which were subsequently analyzed for potential wound healing applications. We performed multimodal evaluations of the fibrous scaffolds, examining physicochemical properties such as fiber morphology, mechanical strength, hydrophilicity, degradation, and release of zinc ions (Zn2+), as well as biological properties, including in vitro cell culture studies. We provide evidence that the integration of 2.4 wt % of Z–G particles in polycaprolactone (PCL) nanofibrous scaffolds improved its physicochemical and biological functions. The in vitro cellular response of the scaffolds was evaluated using a series of cytotoxicity assays and immunocytochemistry analyses with three different cell types: mouse-derived fibroblast cell lines (NIH/3T3), human dermal fibroblasts (HDFn), and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). The composite fibrous scaffold exhibited robust activation and proliferation of NIH/3T3 and HDFn cells, along with a significant angiogenic potential in HUVECs. Immunocytochemistry confirmed elevated expression of vimentin and α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), suggesting that NIH/3T3 and Haden cells were highly differentiated into myofibroblasts. Additionally, the increased expression of CD31 and VE-cadherin in HUVECs suggests that the scaffold supports tube formation, thereby enhancing neovascularization and promoting an effective immune response. Overall, our findings demonstrate the regenerative potential of the self-enhanced Zn hemostatic bioscaffolds, which deliver both Zn2+ions and zein proteins to nourish cells. This capability not only modulates cellular activities but also contributes to tissue repair and remodeling, making the scaffolds suitable for wound repair and various bioengineering applications.

It can increase the risk of thromboembolic events, which subsequently lead to increased risk of stroke, ischemic heart disease, thromboembolism, and death. Antithrombotic therapy has been investigated as a potential management strategy for HF patients in sinus rhythm, but its efficacy remains uncertain. Current guidelines do not recommend the routine use of antithrombotics in patients with HF in sinus rhythm without any other indication for their use. Several randomized controlled trials have investigated the efficacy of antithrombotics in HF patients in sinus rhythm. This article provides a concise review of the existing literature to assess the evidence supporting the use of antithrombotics in HF patients in sinus rhythm. The use of warfarin or other anticoagulants has demonstrated a lower risk of stroke but an increased risk of bleeding. The studies demonstrate that anticoagulant therapy in HF patients in sinus rhythm does not provide significant benefits in terms of overall ischemic events or death. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

12. Identifying genomic regions associated with key agro‐morphological traits in soft red winter wheat using genome‐wide association study

- Abstract
Agro‐morphological traits play a significant role in the adaptation of wheat to diverse agroecosystems. Genetic understanding of these traits is crucial to develop cultivars adapted to specific environments and maximize their productivity. This is a comprehensive genome‐wide association study (GWAS) of 230 diverse lines of soft red winter wheat for identifying quantitative trait loci (QTLs) related to eight key agro‐morphological traits. The diversity panel was evaluated in two locations for three consecutive years (2020–2023). A total of 150 significant marker–trait associations were detected, including 65 for three flag leaf traits, 35 for peduncle length, 33 for plant height, 16 for heading date, and one for plant vigor using 27,466 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers. Eleven high‐confidence major‐effect QTLs explaining greater than 10% phenotypic variance were detected, of which seven were stable, and one showed an association with plant height and peduncle length. QTLs possibly allelic for important dwarfing (Rht23) and vernalization (Vrn‐B1) genes were identified. Six QTLs, QFlw.uga‐1A, QPdl.uga‐1A, QFlw.uga‐2B.2, QPdl.uga‐5A, QPdl.uga‐7A, and QPht.uga‐7B, are presumed to be novel, and nearby candidate gene(s) were identified for all except QPdl.uga‐1A. The pyramiding of favorable alleles from major‐effect QTLs was found to have significant improvement in peduncle length (shortened by 5 cm), flag leaf width (increased by 0.18 cm), and plant height (shortened by 11 cm). This study has improved our genetic understanding of important agro‐morphological traits. These results, upon further validation, can be used in breeding for desirable plant architecture to improve wheat yield potential. Genome‐wide association study (GWAS) was conducted using 230 wheat lines evaluated for eight agro‐morphological traits.One hundred fifty significant marker–trait associations were found using 27,466 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers.Eleven major‐effect quantitative trait loci (QTLs) including seven stable QTLs were identified.Six major‐effect QTLs were presumed to be novel, and candidate genes were identified for five of them.Pyramiding favorable alleles from these QTLs led to significant improvement in traits.

- Abstract
Understanding the health consequences associated with exposure to risk factors is necessary to inform public health policy and practice. To systematically quantify the contributions of risk factor exposures to specific health outcomes, the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2021 aims to provide comprehensive estimates of exposure levels, relative health risks, and attributable burden of disease for 88 risk factors in 204 countries and territories and 811 subnational locations, from 1990 to 2021.

Future trends in disease burden and drivers of health are of great interest to policy makers and the public at large. This information can be used for policy and long-term health investment, planning, and prioritisation. We have expanded and improved upon previous forecasts produced as part of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) and provide a reference forecast (the most likely future), and alternative scenarios assessing disease burden trajectories if selected sets of risk factors were eliminated from current levels by 2050.

15. Toward healing-centered engagement to address mental well-being among young Bhutanese-Nepali Refugee women in the United States: Findings from the cultural leadership project

ABSTRACTOur study provides findings from cultural leadership project based on healing-centered engagement strategies using a transformative convergent mixed methods research design to address mental well-being among young Bhutanese-Nepali refugee women(N = 36). Using a participatory approach, data were collected to explore the feasibility and acceptability of a culturally responsive healing-centered intervention. While quantitative scores showed a significant decrease in anxiety and depression, qualitative findings revealed increased leadership skills, self-esteem, social support, and resilience after the intervention. We discuss the need to promote a holistic view of healing from collective trauma and offer a culturally grounded asset-driven approach to promote hope and healing among refugees.

16. Analysis of Forest Inventory Data Shows Disparity in Tree Mortality and Resistance in Texas National Forests

In 2011, the forestlands of Texas were affected by one of the most severe droughts in the state’s history, killing an estimated 65 million trees in the East Texas region. This study uses USDA Forest Service Forest Inventory and Analysis data and a standardized precipitation-evapotranspiration index to estimate major tree species responses to the 2011 drought in Texas’ four national forests. We used an analysis of variance and a linear mixed-effect model to evaluate factors contributing to tree mortality and growth. We found that tree mortality rates varied greatly during the drought period relative to predrought levels; higher stand age, higher stand density, and higher mean summer temperature contributed to tree mortality volume.Study Implications:Drought is a recurring disturbance agent and is likely to continue to increase in frequency and severity in the future. We provide an understanding of an exceptional drought as a disturbance agent and its impacts on tree mortality and resistance. The effects of the 2011 drought on national forests in Texas have not previously been evaluated. Texas’ national forests represent over 256,975 ha (635,000 ac) in the state’s eastern region and nearly 10% of all public land in Texas. Our results are useful to decision makers in developing strategies and protecting forestlands in the face of potential future droughts.

17. Louisiana’s Sugarcane Bagasse Ash Utilization for Partial Cement Replacement in Concrete for Transportation Infrastructure Applications

This study evaluated the properties of sugarcane bagasse ash (SCBA) obtained from different production processes for use as partial replacement of cement: (1) minimally post-processed (MP) SCBA, obtained by sieving and grinding SCBA from Louisiana’s sugarcane field production; (2) fully post-processed (FP) SCBA, obtained by sieving, further burning under controlled conditions at temperature T, and grinding field-produced SCBA, denoted as FP-T; and (3) laboratory-produced (LP) SCBA, obtained by controlled burning at temperature T of bagasse fibers and grinding of the obtained ashes, denoted as LP-T. The temperatures of burning, T, for FP-T and LP-T SCBA were varied between 450 and 650 °C at 50 °C intervals. The significance of this study is the valorization of agricultural waste for the production of low-carbon concrete for transportation applications in Louisiana, and other locations where SCBA are produced from a low-efficiency boiler in a sugar mill. A comprehensive characterization of the different SCBA materials was conducted, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM)-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), laser diffraction particle size analysis, Chapelle’s test, strength activity index (SAI), loss on ignition (LOI), and moisture content. Experimental results showed that all LP-T and FP-T SCBAs met ASTM C618 chemical requirements and SAI requirements for Class N pozzolans. By contrast, MP SCBA did not meet these requirements, thus resulting in unsuitable SCM application. LP calcinated at 650 °C and FP calcinated at 450 °C exhibited the greatest SAI and SiO2+ Al2O3+ Fe2O3among LP-T and FP-T SCBAs, respectively. Based on a combination of properties and production practicality considerations, FP calcinated at 450 °C was identified as the most promising SCM-grade SCBA for large-scale production in Louisiana, and was used to further evaluate the fresh and hardened properties of concrete incorporating SCBA at 10%, 20%, 30%, and 40% cement replacement by mass. A decrease in workability as well as 28- and 90-day compressive strength with the increase in SCBA content was observed. However, the relative strength gain from 28 to 90 days and the 90-day surface resistivity increased with increments in SCBA dosage. Characterization of cement-SCBA paste through XRD and SEM revealed portlandite consumption and densification of the cementitious matrix from 28 to 90 days, thus suggesting the pozzolanic activity of SCBA.

To complement industry-wide sustainability initiatives, this study aims to improve the understanding of traveler mindfulness. A holistic, case-based approach explores how traveler motivations and situational factors relate to mindfulness in a sustainability context. A sample of 510 recent travelers informs this study. Fuzzy set statistics test complexity theory tenants to examine the relationship between mindfulness and travelers' motivations and preferences. Results support complexity theory tenants and show multiple paths relate to high mindfulness. Study results advance the understanding of traveler behavior by introducing a sustainability-focused mindfulness scale, advancing mindfulness studies with complexity theory and fuzzy set analysis, and offering insights to destination managers who target travelers with a sustainability mindset. 21. Thermoelectric Transport Properties of Electron-Doped Pyrite FeS2

- Abstract
Pyrite FeS2has been investigated for a wide range of applications, including thermoelectrics, due to previous observations of large thermopower at room temperature. However, the values of thermopower reported in the literature are extremely sensitive to the nature of the sample─whether they are natural or lab-grown, bulk crystals or thin films─and an ambiguity in the magnitude and sign of the thermopower of pure FeS2exists. Variation in the magnitude of room-temperature thermopower has also been observed in Co-doped samples. Therefore, it is of interest to clarify the intrinsic thermopower of this system that could be measured in more pure samples. In this paper, we investigate the thermoelectric properties of Co-doped FeS2using first-principles calculations. We apply three different doping schemes to understand the effect of electron doping in FeS2, namely, explicit Co substitution, jellium doping, and electron addition within a rigid band approximation (RBA) picture. The calculated thermopower is less than −50 μV/K for all values of Co doping that we studied, suggesting that this system may not be useful in thermoelectric applications. Interestingly, we find that RBA substantially overestimates the magnitude of calculated thermopower compared to the explicit Co substitution and jellium doping schemes. The overestimation occurs because the changes in the electronic structure due to doping-induced structural modification and charge screening are not taken into account by the rigid shift of the Fermi level within RBA. RBA is frequently used in first-principles investigations of the thermopower of doped semiconductors, and Co-substituted FeS2illustrates a case where it fails.

22. Change in US farm sector's financial position and performance in 2020 compared to pre-pandemic expectations: An analysis using financial ratios

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine how US farm sector performed in 2020, the first year of the pandemic. There were significant supply and demand shocks due to the pandemic. Furthermore, there was significant fluctuation in commodity prices and record high government payments in 2020. This study aims to examine the performance and position of US farm sector (financially) to system (and global economy) wide shocks. Design/methodology/approach: The authors examine 2020 values for farm sector financial ratios before and after the onset of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic using the data from the United States Department of Agriculture to understand the financial position and performance of the US farm sector. Findings: The authors find solvency ratios (which are indicators of the sector's ability to repay financial liabilities via the sale of assets) worsened in 2020 relative to pre-pandemic expectations. Efficiency ratios (which evaluate the conversion of assets into production and revenue) and liquidity ratios (which are indicators of the availability of cash to cover debt payments) showed mixed outcomes for the realized results in 2020 relative to the pre-pandemic forecasts. Four profitability ratios were stronger in 2020 relative to pre-pandemic expectations. All solvency, liquidity and profitability ratios plus 2 out of 5 efficiency ratios for 2020 were weaker than their respective average ratios obtained from 2000 to 2019 data. Originality/value: This research is one of the first papers to use financial ratios to examine how the US farm sector performed in 2020 compared to expectations prior to the pandemic.

23. Alabama Field Project to Evaluate Variability in Soil–Cement Specimens Compacted with the Plastic Mold Device

- Abstract
The plastic mold compaction device (PM Device) was developed in Mississippi to compact cementitiously stabilized soil inside plastic molds to improve soil–cement quality by adding value during design and construction activities. The PM Device has been incorporated as an AASHTO provisional standard (AASHTO PP92-19) and, to date, prevailing activities have been Mississippi Department of Transportation projects and have included controlled laboratory evaluations and field projects. This paper goes beyond previous efforts, to document a field study in which the PM Device was successfully used on an Alabama Department of Transportation project to evaluate its effectiveness within another state’s construction specifications. The PM Device was capable of capturing quantifiable variation in mechanical properties over the duration of the construction project, as well as producing similar mechanical properties to cores taken from the compacted pavement surface. Additionally, molds described in AASHTO PP92-19 were compared with one another to evaluate their potential within the standard practice. AASHTO PP92-19 protocols were sufficient to produce viable, repeatable test specimens within another state department of transportation construction environment for quality control and quality assurance.

25. Early-Life Digital Media Experiences and Development of Atypical Sensory Processing

- Abstract
IMPORTANCE: Atypical sensory processing is challenging for children and families, yet there is limited understanding of its associated risk factors. OBJECTIVE: To determine the association between early-life digital media exposure and sensory processing outcomes among toddlers. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This multicenter US study used data that were analyzed from the National Children’s Study (NCS), a cohort study of environmental influences on child health and development, with enrollment from 2011 to 2014. Data analysis was performed in 2023. The study included children enrolled in the NCS at birth whose caregivers completed reports of digital media exposure and sensory processing. EXPOSURES: Children’s viewing of television or video at 12 months (yes or no), 18 months, and 24 months of age (hours per day). MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: Sensory processing was reported at approximately 33 months of age on the Infant/Toddler Sensory Profile. Quadrant scores (low registration, sensation seeking, sensory sensitivity, and sensation avoiding) were categorized into groups representing typical, high, and low sensory-related behaviors, and multinomial regression analyses were performed. RESULTS: A total of 1471 children (50% male) were included. Screen exposure at 12 months of age was associated with a 2-fold increased odds of being in the high category of low registration (odds ratio [OR], 2.05; 95% CI, 1.31-3.20), while the odds of being in the low category instead of the typical category decreased for sensation seeking (OR, 0.55; 95% CI, 0.35-0.87), sensation avoiding (OR, 0.69; 95% CI, 0.50-0.94), and low registration (OR, 0.64; 95% CI, 0.44-0.92). At 18 months of age, greater screen exposure was associated with increased risk of high sensation avoiding (OR, 1.23; 95% CI, 1.03-1.46) and low registration (OR, 1.23; 95% CI, 1.04-1.44). At 24 months of age, greater screen exposure was associated with increased risk of high sensation seeking (OR, 1.20; 95% CI, 1.02-1.42), sensory sensitivity (OR, 1.25; 95% CI, 1.05-1.49), and sensation avoiding (OR, 1.21; 95% CI, 1.03-1.42). CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: In this cohort study, early-life digital media exposure was associated with atypical sensory processing outcomes in multiple domains. These findings suggest that digital media exposure might be a potential risk factor for the development of atypical sensory profiles. Further research is needed to understand the relationship between screen time and specific sensory-related developmental and behavioral outcomes, and whether minimizing early-life exposure can improve subsequent sensory-related outcomes.

The metal-hydride-based “topochemical reduction” process has produced several thermodynamically unstable phases across various transition metal oxide series with unusual crystal structures and nontrivial ground states. Here, by such an oxygen (de-)intercalation method we synthesis a samarium nickelate with ordered nickel valences associated with tri-component coordination configurations. This structure, with a formula of Sm9Ni9O22as revealed by four-dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy (4D-STEM), emerges from the intricate planes of {303}pcordered apical oxygen vacancies. X-ray spectroscopy measurements and ab initio calculations show the coexistence of square planar, pyramidal, and octahedral Ni sites with mono-, bi-, and tri-valences. It leads to an intense orbital polarization, charge-ordering, and a ground state with a strong electron localization marked by the disappearance of ligand–hole configuration at low temperature. This nickelate compound provides another example of previously inaccessible materials enabled by topotactic transformations and presents an interesting platform where mixed Ni valence can give rise to exotic phenomena.

ABSTRACTAutophagy is an essential catabolic cellular homeostasis process conserved in all eukaryotes. BECN1/Beclin 1, a key autophagy protein involved in autophagosome nucleation, contains two invariant CxxC motifs within a large intrinsically disordered region (IDR) at the BECN1 N terminus. We used inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry to demonstrate that BECN1 binds Zn2+in a 1:1 molar ratio, and that mutation of the invariant cysteines abrogated Zn2+binding, demonstrating that the invariant CxxC motifs were responsible for binding Zn2+. We used circular dichroism spectroscopy to show that Zn2+-binding increases IDR helicity, and likely also binding-associated helical transitions. Further, we used small angle X-ray scattering and multi-angle light scattering to show that Zn2+-binding made the BECN1 IDR more compact, and HDX-MS to show that the Zn2+-bound state of the IDR had reduced solvent accessibility. We also used isothermal titration calorimetry to show that the BECN1 IDR did not self-associate and abrogation of Zn2+binding does not affect binding of a viral BCL2 homolog. Last, we showed that both CxxC motifs are required, but the intervening IDR is less important, for starvation-triggered upregulation of autophagy. Introduction: Children below the age of 15 years account for the majority of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)-related deaths in Nepal. Antiretroviral therapy (ART) improves health and prolongs lives of people with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Poor adherence to ART provides clue to a sub-therapeutic level of antiretroviral drug, which can facilitate multi-drug resistance of similar regimen, leading to treatment failure and death. The objective of this study was to determine the level of adherence to ART and its associated factors among HIV-infected children aged 0-14 years in Pokhara Academy of Health Sciences (PoAHS), Pokhara, Nepal. Material and methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted between September 15
th , 2020 and February 15th , 2021, and included 57 HIV-infected children. Caregivers of the children were questioned with a pre-tested, semi-structured questionnaire, which was later translated verbally to Nepali. Trained doctors took the interviews. Acquired data was entered using SPSS version 17 software for analysis. Level of significance was set at p < 0.05. Results: Caregiver’s forgetfulness was the main reason for missing ART doses (60%; 6/10). Other reasons were side effects of drug-related fear (30%; 3/10), followed by transportation problems (10%; 1/10). Older children (range, 11-14 years) adhered more to ART than younger ones (aged 0-5 and 6-10 years), with COR = 4.80 and 1.16, and 95% CI: 0.81-28.15% and 0.19-6.88%, respectively. Caregivers who knew their HIV status had their children more adherent to ART than those with unknown HIV status (COR = 27.94, 95% CI: 1.23-634.62%). A significant proportion of children in ART unit of PoAHS (17.54%; 10/57) missed ART doses within the previous week. Conclusions: The level of non-adherence to antiretroviral therapy in children was found to be 17.54%. Caregiver’s forgetfulness, side effects of drug-related fear, and transportation problems were the most common causes of non-adherence. Encouraging caregivers to know their HIV status, providing medicines via nearby ART clinics with coordination of community-based support, and using clues as a reminder to provide the child with drugs at the same time of the day, increase ART adherence in pediatric HIV-positive patients. The increase in usage of Online Learning systems has provided a challenge to deliver e-contents based on user needs. This study uses learning style data to determine the learning profile and provide the content based on the user's needs, whereas gamified elements are used to increase user engagement. The combination of these two approaches would eventually increase the overall user motivation and interest in the platform. The model developed is used to predict the Learning Style (LS) preference by analyzing the activity data obtained from the student interaction in the course. Further, clustering is done to determine the LS preference of the user in the system. Content is designed based on user's learning styles and preferences and uploaded to the platform. Data were collected through surveys after the end of the course to measure students' perception of the three variables: motivation, learning satisfaction, and learning outcomes. - Abstract
Background: An emerging theory suggests a link between Alzheimer's disease (AD) and microbial infection. Notably, various microbes have been detected in the post‐mortem brains of AD patients and murine models. However, there exists a gap in research concerning the presence and role of microbial infection in the AD retina, which shares common pathogenesis with the brain. Focusing on Chlamydia pneumoniae (Cp), a gram‐negative respiratory pathogen, we assessed the presence and severity of infection and inflammasome activation in retinas and paired brains from individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or AD, comparing them to age‐ and sex‐matched counterparts with normal cognition (NC). This investigation provides critical insights into the potential microbial involvement in AD pathology. Method: Employing diverse histological and biochemical techniques, we identified and quantified Cp and related biomarkers in retinas and brains of MCI and AD patients vs NC controls. We determined the relationships between retinal and brain Cp infection and gliosis, inflammasome activation, pyroptosis, and disease status. Result: Cp inclusions were identified in the postmortem retina of individuals with MCI and AD, correlating with Cp burden in the corresponding brain tissues. Notably, a threefold increase in retinal and brain Cp infection was observed in AD, not in MCI, compared to NC, suggesting a predilection of Cp infection at later AD stages. Live Cp was successfully isolated from AD retinal lysates, confirming active Cp infection. Retinal Cp infection correlated with retinal amyloidosis and synaptic damage, but not with brain amyloidosis. Additionally, it was associated with brain tauopathy markers as well as the cognitive status. Cp‐infected cells were engulfed by retinal microglia. Furthermore, Cp infection triggered NLRP3‐inflammasome activation, gliosis, pyroptosis, and apoptosis. While retinal NLRP3 inflammasome increased earlier in MCI, Cp‐induced retinal ASC, Capase‐1 and ‐3, and cleaved‐GSDMD rose later in AD‐dementia stage. These findings unveil the intricate relationship between Cp infection, retinal pathology, and AD progression. Conclusion: Our findings reveal Cp infection in both AD retina and brain, coupled with inflammasome markers. - Abstract
Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive irreversible dementia characterized by beta‐amyloid protein plaque deposition and hyperphosphorylation of tau forming neurofibrillary tangles, and neurodegeneration. An emerging theory posits that infections could be one of the triggering factors in AD development and progression. Multiple lines of evidence have linked Chlamydia pneumoniae (Cp), a gram‐negative obligate intracellular bacterium with AD. Cp has been detected in the post‐mortem brain tissues of AD patients, however, pathomechanisms associated with Cp in AD remain unknown. Method: Transgenic APPSWE/PS1∆E9 (ADtg) mice and non‐tg wildtype (WT) littermates were infected with Cp intranasally and sacrificed either 1 week or 6 months after infection. Mice were perfused with saline, and the brains were harvested for subsequent analysis, including PCR, flow cytometry, immunofluorescence, and live Cp growth. Neurobehavioral functions were assessed through an open field, visual‐stimuli X maze, and Barnes maze tests. Primary microglia and astrocytes were infected with Cp and cytokine and chemokines production was measured by ELISA. Result: We found Cp in the olfactory bulb and brain of mice 7 days after infection and the infiltration of inflammatory cells into the brain. Cp infection resulted in microglial activation. Immunohistochemical analysis also revealed the activation of microglia and astrocytes in the Cp‐infected mouse brain. In addition, Cp infection led to increased mRNA expression of neuroinflammatory mediators such as cytokines and chemokines. Primary astrocytes and microglia cultures could sustain Cp growth and produce proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines in response to infection. Live Cp in the brain was also observed 7 months after infection and the Cp load was higher in ADtg mice than WT. Cp infection resulted in significant cognitive decline in both WT as well as ADtg mice together with increased AD‐related neuropathology. Conclusion: Intranasal Cp infection leads to brain colonization and altered Iba1 immunoreactivity. Both primary astrocytes and microglia support Cp growth and produce neuroinflammatory cytokines. Long‐term Cp infection promotes neuroinflammation and cognitive decline in mice along with increased Aβ deposits. Cognitive impairment in Cp‐infected ADtg and WT mice as well as increased Aβ in ADtg mice suggest that Cp infection may play an important pathological role in AD development. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This is a case of a 34-year-old man surviving hypothermic cardiac arrest with excellent neurologic recovery in Nepal. After 3 days without communication at an altitude of approximately 6,000 m, the patient was located in a crevasse and retrieved by a helicopter-supported search and rescue team. At first contact, he was reported to be breathing and shivering with appropriate pupillary response. The patient was then flown to a local teaching hospital where he was assessed on arrival and found to be in cardiac arrest with absence of spontaneous breathing and a central pulse and bilaterally fixed and dilated pupils. An electrocardiogram demonstrated asystole, and his core temperature was unrecordably low on the available device. After resuscitation and return of spontaneous circulation, the patient received a secondary helicopter transfer to a major hospital in the capital, Kathmandu, where his recovery continued. The report discusses the physiological basis of the relatively favorable outcomes observed in hypothermic cardiac arrest and highlights the operations and capability of helicopter emergency medical services in a country on the United Nations list of least developed nations. Large-area land use land cover (LULC) mapping using high-resolution imagery remains challenging due to radiometric differences between scenes, the low spectral depth of the imagery, landscape heterogeneity, and computational limitations. Using a random forest (RF)-supervised machine-learning algorithm, we present a geographic object-based image analysis approach to classifying a large mosaic of 220 National Agriculture Imagery Program orthoimagery into lulc categories. The approach was applied in central Texas, usa, covering over 6000 km². We generated 36 variables for each object and accounted for spatial structures of sample data to determine the distance at which samples were spatially independent. The final rf model produced 94.8% accuracy on independent stratified random samples. In addition, vegetation and water indices, the mean and standard deviation of principal components, and texture features improved classification accuracy. This study demonstrates a costeffective way of producing an accurate multi-class land use/land cover map using high-spatial/low-spectral resolution orthoimagery. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The concrete industry’s increasing demand poses a significant environmental challenge due to its high carbon footprint. Addressing this issue requires the integration of sustainable materials into concrete production. This study aimed to evaluate the Himalayan Giant Nettle (HGN) fiber as a novel natural reinforcement alternative, alongside Fly Ash (FA) and Rice Husk Ash (RHA) as supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) in M30 concrete. While FA and RHA have been almost thoroughly researched as SCMs to enhance concrete characteristics and lower cement usage, the use of HGN fiber in concrete remains to be explored. The FA and RHA replacements of 20% by weight enhanced compressive strength (CS), flexural strength (FS) and split tensile strength (STS), respectively. HGN fibers at 1% volume optimally increased CS, FS, and STS by 16.2%, 33.33%, and 36.90%, respectively. However, exceeding 1% HGN fiber content negatively affected workability and strength. The fiber’s ability to bridge cracks, reduce stress concentration, and improve flexibility contributed to the observed improvements. Further, HGN fiber’s low cost, renewable nature, and potential to significantly reduce concrete weight make it a promising sustainable option. This paper confirms the significant positive impact of incorporating HGN fiber as a promising eco-friendly alternative for concrete reinforcement, thereby contributing to the ongoing research on developing more eco-friendly construction materials.

41. An assessment of the health belief model (HBM) properties as predictors of COVID-19 preventive behaviour

- Abstract
Background: Public participation in preventive efforts is crucial in preventing infection and reducing mortality attributed to infectious diseases. The health belief model (HBM) suggests that individuals will likely participate in these efforts when experiencing a personal threat or risk, but only if the benefits of acting outweigh the risk or perceived barriers. Methods: The current study explores the properties of the HBM as predictors of the public’s compliance with COVID-19 preventive behaviour. Quantitative data on HBM properties, COVID-19 preventive behaviour, socioeconomic (SES) and demographic characteristics were collected from a sample of 674 adults in Hamburg, Germany. Binary logistic regression was computed to examine the effect of the properties of HBM on COVID-19 vaccination. Multiple linear regression was calculated to investigate the impacts of HBM properties on the likelihood of participants’ face mask usage as a protective measure against COVID-19 infection. Results: The logistic regression model was statistically significant, X
2 (13) = 149.096, p< .001. The specificity and sensitivity for the model is 58.1% and 99.4%, respectively. Similarly, the multiple regression model results showed a good fit for the data. F (13, 650) = 17.093, p< .001, and adjusted R2 = .240, suggesting that HBM properties predict face mask usage. Conclusion: This study’s findings provide robust evidence to recommend that the concerned public health professionals consider individuals’ health beliefs when designing an effective COVID-19 preventive programme. Public health messaging should consider highlighting the benefits of preventive actions and the potential lethality of COVID-19 to evoke an individual’s appropriate concern.- Published

SummaryShivapuri Nagarjun National Park (SNNP) is a protected land spanning an area of 159 km2in the heart of central Nepal. This area has never been systematically explored in search of the family Tetrigidae (Orthoptera). In this paper, we report 11 species from SNNP, of which five are new to science: Aryalidonta rochakin. sp., Skejotettix mahendrain. sp., Skejotettix mahajodin. sp., Lamellitettigodes jhalakmanin. sp., and Hebarditettix sandukin. sp.Due to new combinations, the genus AryalidontaSubedi & Kasalo, 2023 has three additional species, Aryalidonta ridleyi(Günther, 1938) n. comb., A. dohertyi(Hancock, 1915) n. comb.and A. pallida(Hancock, 1915) n. comb., all of which were previously assigned to EucriotettixHebard, 1930. Brief notes on compositions and diagnoses of genera LamellitettigodesGünther, 1939 and SkejotettixSubedi, 2022 are provided, inviting further research. The generic assignment of Pseudoparatettix incertusIngrisch, 2001a called into question. An identification key to all the tetrigids of SNNP is provided.

43. Comparing Crushed Brick as Coarse Aggregate Substitute in Concrete: Experimental vs. Numerical Study

As building construction speeds up, demolitions will increase due to concrete’s limited lifespan ultimately ending in demolition. In earthquake-prone countries like Nepal, buildings may collapse during earthquakes, leading to the disposal of bricks creating potential environmental pollution. This research explores the use of Crushed Brick Aggregate (CBA), obtained as a replacement for Natural Coarse Aggregate (NCA) in concrete. Laboratory tests of concrete underwent compressive and tensile strength tests, while the aggregate underwent sieve analysis, impact, abrasion, and water absorption tests. Similarly, cement was subjected to tests for w/c ratio, setting time, and consistency. Employing ABAQUS software for numerical modeling, an analysis of how the concrete responds to various pressures has also been conducted. Substituting NCA with CBA at 10%, 15%, 20%, and 25% by weights, the study finds that up to 20% replacement maintains comparable strength, offering potential application in construction. The research emphasizes reusing bricks in construction instead of discarding them, which reduces waste and enhances resource recycling and conservation, ultimately promoting global sustainability. This encourages engineers, and researchers to develop eco-friendly concrete using recycled materials. The limitations encompass durability concerns, water absorption, and project cost. Furthermore, researchers may investigate how the chemical composition of bricks affects concrete strength.

This research has investigated and evaluated the demographic profile and competency levels of local builders involved in residential building construction sites at Nawalparasi East, Gandaki province, Nepal. The construction industry is a cornerstone of Nepal’s economic development. The reliability and quality of construction heavily depend on the local builder’s capability to execute the work on the basis of technical and skills proficiency. This study aims to ascertain the status of local builders regarding their competency levels and their construction work profiles on the basis of work experience. The research employs a questionnaire approach, combining quantitative and qualitative data collection techniques. A field survey is administered to local builders to evaluate their demographic profiles, technical skills and knowledge as well as their construction site experiences. The findings of this study reveal what local builders are good at and where they need to improve in residential construction. The results of this research are meant to help construction entrepreneurs, industry players, and local-level authorities come up with plans to boost the local builders and categories them as per their ability and strength. The outcome of the alternate hypothesis indicates that, concerning local builders, there is substantial evidence suggesting that at least one characteristic significantly varies from the others.

45. Optimization of Coronary Stent Design Using Response Surface Modeling

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of premature death and can partially be treated using coronary stents. During stent placement in the artery, vascular wall injuries occur due to the nonuniform expansion of the stent. The radial displacement at the distal end of the stent becomes greater than the radial displacement at the middle of the stent. This phenomenon is known as the dogboning effect. This paper presents a possible solution to counteract this effect by optimizing the design parameters of polymeric bioresorbable Palmaz-Schatz stent. SolidWorks 2019 (Dassault Systèmes) is used to design the coronary stent. The finite element method (Abaqus standard) is used to investigate the expansion behavior of the stents. The optimization method uses forty initial samples to approximate the functional relationship between design parameters and the objective function. Optimization methods based on response surface methodology (RSM) using a regression model are proposed to decrease the dogboning effect. The optimization technique using RSM resulted in a 78.67% reduction in the dogboning rate from the average dogboning rate of initial samples and an 87.7% reduction in comparison with the original stent. This research offers valuable insights into mitigating the dogboning effect, thereby advancing the development of more efficient stent designs for treating CVDs.

47. Site Index Models for Loblolly Pine Forests in the Southern United States Developed with Forest Inventory and Analysis Data

- Abstract
Accurate productivity estimates are essential to assess the overall sustainability of forest resources. Site index (SI) models for loblolly pine (Pinus taedaL.) in plantation and natural forests of the southeastern United States were developed using the Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) database. We extracted short (~20 years), unbalanced panel data from the FIA database. Ten different nonlinear models derived from the base models using the algebraic difference approach (ADA) or the generalized algebraic difference approach (GADA) were fitted to the extracted data. The performance of the models was ranked based on a variety of fit and evaluation statistics. The results showed that all top three models were derived using the GADA approach. The best model for loblolly pine plantation and natural forest stands was derived from the Hossfeld model and the Chapman–Richards model, respectively. The best-fitted models for planted forests were also compared with previously developed models. This study demonstrated that base-age invariant and polymorphic SI models could be developed using short panel data extracted from FIA data. The SI models presented here can be used as a height growth model component in forest growth and yield model systems.Study Implications: Improved site index equations for assessing the site quality of loblolly pine plantation and natural stands are now available to stakeholders at the policy, management, and operational levels. Activities such as forest management, restoration, and wildlife management, which require site quality data, will benefit from the new models. Furthermore, the approach of deriving panel data based on Forest Inventory and Analysis data offers information on developing and updating models for other species. Finally, the approach of this study, to use permanent plot measurement data in developing growth and yield models, is cost-effective and time-efficient.

48. A case of Lemierre’s syndrome causing panhypopituitarism, cavernous sinus thrombosis, ischaemic stroke and pulmonary embolism

- Abstract
Infection is a rare cause of panhypopituitarism and has not been reported in the context of Lemierre’s syndrome. We present the case of a previously well 19-year-old man, who presented acutely unwell with meningitis and sepsis. Fusobacterium necrophorumwas isolated from peripheral blood cultures and identified on cerebrospinal fluid with 16S rDNA Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). Imaging demonstrated internal jugular vein thrombosis with subsequent cavernous venous sinus thrombosis. Pituitary function tests were suggestive of panhypopituitarism. The patient was diagnosed with Lemierre’s syndrome complicated by meningitis, cavernous sinus thrombosis, base of skull osteomyelitis, ischaemic stroke and panhypopituitarism. He was treated with 13 weeks of intravenous antibiotics followed by 3 weeks of oral amoxicillin, and anticoagulated with dalteparin then apixaban. His panhypopituitarism was managed with hydrocortisone, levothyroxine and desmopressin.

49. How Himalayan communities are changing cultivation practices in the context of climate change

- Abstract
Climate change can have significant impacts on crop yields and food security. This study assessed the linkages between climate change and crop yields to obtain a better understanding on the drivers of food security. The study was conducted in Pasagaun village of Lamjung District in Nepal, where household surveys and focus group discussions (FGDs) were used to collect data including crop cultivation, irrigation facilities, and adaptation strategies. Moreover, climate data (temperature and precipitation) from 1992 to 2020 were collected from the Khudi Bazar meteorological station and crop yield data were obtained from the Agri-Business Promotion and Statistics Division. Trend analysis of temperature and precipitation was conducted using Mann-Kendall trend test and Sen's Slope method, and the results showed an increase in the average temperature of approximately 0.02 °C/a and a decrease in the annual precipitation of 9.84 mm/a. The cultivation of traditional varieties of rice and foxtail millet (Kaguno) has vanished. Although, there was no significant impact of the maximum temperature on the yield of rice and maize, the regression analysis revealed that there are negative relationships between rice yield and annual minimum temperature (r = −0.44), between millet yield and annual precipitation (r = −0.30), and between maize yield and annual minimum temperature (r = −0.31) as well as positive relationship between rice yield and annual precipitation (r = 0.16). Moreover, average rice yield and millet yield have decreased by 27.0% and 57.0% in 2000–2020, respectively. Despite other reasons for the decrease in crop yield such as the lack of irrigation facilities, out-migration of farmer, and increased pest infestation, respondents have adopted adaptation strategies (for example, shifts in cultivation time and changes in crop types) to minimize the impacts of climate change. More investigation and community-based farming education are needed to understand and alleviate the harmful impacts of climate change on crop yield, as effective adaptation coping strategies are still insufficient. This study provides insights into the adaptation strategies that are necessary to keep food security in the face of climate change.

50. Evaluation of anemia among pregnant women in a hilly district of western Nepal: A hospital based cross-sectional study

- Abstract
Iron deficiency anemia remains a significant public health concern, particularly among pregnant women and children. The prevalence of anemia is higher in lower middle income countries including Nepal. Despite government efforts, progress in reducing anemia in the last 15 years has been slow, especially in remote hilly regions. While investing in anemia control can yield substantial economic returns, there have not been adequate studies to cover diverse geographical areas of Nepal. This study aims to determine the prevalence of anemia in a hilly district of western Nepal. A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted among the 350 pregnant women visiting for ante natal checkup in Burtibang primary hospital from July 15, 2022 to Jan 15, 2023. The factors associated with the prevalence of anemia was calculated by using multivariate logistics regression analysis at P < .05 and ANOVA test was done to calculate the differences in hemoglobin level across the different characteristics of the pregnant women. More than 2 out of 5 pregnant women (43.1%) had anemia with 57.6% having mild anemia and 42.4% of the women having moderate to severe level of anemia. The mean Hb level of the pregnant women was 10.8 (±1.0) g/dL. Women on second (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: 0.06; 95% CI: 0.03–0.11) and third trimester of their pregnancy (aOR: 0.06; 95% CI: 0.02–0.16) had lower odds of having anemia. A moderate level of correlation of Hb level with the gestational age (R = 0.574, Pvalue: <.001) was seen in the study. The prevalence of anemia is a serious public health problem among the women visiting ante natal checkup in Burtibang hospital. Later trimester of the pregnancy had higher risks of having anemia in comparison to the first and the gestational age of the women was a significant predictor of Hb level among the population.
