Tunable mode converter is a key component of channel switching and routing for optical communication system by adopting mode-division multiplexing. Traditional mode converter hardly implements high-order mode conversion and dynamic tunability simultaneously. In this study, we design a tunable mode converter filled with liquid crystal, which can convert fundamental mode into multiple high-order modes (TE0, TE1, and TE2) with a good performance and low intrinsic loss. For this multiple-objective task, we propose an inverse design framework based on the adjoint method. To experimentally prove our design, a tunable mode converter filled with air or water and a mode demultiplexer are fabricated to implement dynamic routing. The experimental results agree well with the simulation and reveal the crosstalk only around −7 dB. With its performance and efficiency, our proposed design flow can be a powerful tool for multifunction device design.

In this paper, we report all-optical manipulation of magnetization in ferromagnetic Co/Pt thin films enhanced by plasmonic resonances. By annealing a thin Au layer, we fabricate large-area Au nanoislands on top of the Co/Pt magnetic thin films, which show plasmonic resonances around the wavelength of 606 nm. Using a customized magneto-optical Kerr effect setup, we experimentally observe an 18.5% decrease in the minimum laser power required to manipulate the magnetization, comparing the on- and off-resonance conditions. The results are in very good agreement with numerical simulations. Our research findings demonstrate the possibility to achieve an all-optical magnetic recording with low energy consumption, low cost, and high areal density by integrating plasmonic nanostructures with magnetic media.

We proposed a novel strategy to design a deep subwavelength metasurface with full 2π transmission phase modulation and high transmission efficiency by applying resonators with interfering Fano resonance. Theoretical investigation demonstrates that the transmission efficiency of the resonators depends on the direct transmission coefficient, direct reflection coefficient, and Q factor. When an impedance layer is added in the resonators, the direct transmission and direct reflection coefficients can be facilely manipulated so that the span of the transmission phase around the resonance frequency can be extended to 2π. As a result, we can continuously adjust the transmission phase from 0 to 2π through changing the geometric parameters of the resonators and construct a deep subwavelength metasurface with the resonators to manipulate the transmission wave with high efficiency. We also find that a layer of grating can be used as the impedance layer to change direct transmission and direct reflection in the actual design of the metasurface. The proposed strategy may provide effective guidance to design a deep subwavelength metasurface for controlling a transmitted wave with high efficiency.

We design a tunable terahertz metasurface, which consists of two different trapezoid graphene ribbons patterned in opposite directions on a gold film, separated by a thin dielectric spacer. The two kinds of graphene ribbons can cover a nearly 2π phase shift with high reflection efficiency in different spectral regions so that the metasurface can reflect different frequency waves to totally different directions. By changing the Fermi level of the graphene ribbons, the response frequency of the proposed metasurface can be adjusted, and as a result, tunable spectrum splitting can be realized. The present metasurface provides a powerful way to control terahertz waves and has potential applications in wide-angle beam splitters.

Weyl points, which are the degenerate points in three-dimensional momentum space, have been widely studied in the photonic system, and show some intriguing phenomena such as topologically protected surface states and chiral anomalies. Type-I Weyl systems possess a complete bandgap, and topologically protected surface states can be excited without disturbing the bulk states. In this work, we investigate the influence of the sign of coupling coefficient on the topological property of the system and find that type-I Weyl points can be realized by introducing a negative coupling between the stacking layers of the designed photonic crystal. We propose a new strategy to construct a type-I Weyl system by stacking the hexagonal photonic lattice. Different from the topological nontrivial photonic system with a positive coefficient, the negative couplings in the photonic system are realized by adding another resonating site between stacking layers. We theoretically demonstrate that the effective coupling between the resonating sites in adjacent layers sign-flips through the judicious design of the nearest coupling strength and eigenfrequency of the additional sites. The surface states at opposite boundaries of the proposed system have opposite group velocities, which is the feature of type-I Weyl points. Our study provides a new method of exploring topologically protected photonic systems and developing possible topological devices.
