Few-layer black phosphorus (FLBP), a technologically important 2D material, faces a major hurdle to consumer applications: spontaneous degradation under ambient conditions. Blocking the direct exposure of FLBP to the environment has remained the key strategy to enhance its stability, but this can also limit its utility. In this paper, a more ambitious approach to handling FLBP is reported where not only is FLBP oxidation blocked, but it is also repaired postoxidation. Our approach, inspired by nature, employs the antioxidant molecule β-carotene that protects plants against photooxidative damages to act as a protecting and repairing agent for FLBP. The mechanistic role of β-carotene is established by a suite of spectro-microscopy techniques, in combination with computational studies and biochemical assays. Transconductance studies on FLBP-based field effect transistor (FET) devices further affirm the protective and reparative effects of β-carotene. The outcomes indicate the potential for deploying a plethora of natural antioxidant molecules to enhance the stability of other environmentally sensitive inorganic nanomaterials and expedite their translation for technological and consumer applications.

Manipulating the exchange bias (EB) effect using an electronic gate is a significant goal in spintronics. The emergence of van der Waals (vdW) magnetic heterostructures has provided improved means to study interlayer magnetic coupling, but to date, these heterostructures have not exhibited electrical gate-controlled EB effects. Here, we report electrically controllable EB effects in a vdW heterostructure, FePS3-Fe5GeTe2. By applying a solid protonic gate, the EB effects were repeatably electrically tuned. The EB field reaches up to 23% of the coercivity and the blocking temperature ranges from 30 to 60 K under various gate-voltages. The proton intercalations not only tune the average magnetic exchange coupling but also change the antiferromagnetic configurations in the FePS3layer. These result in a dramatic modulation of the total interface exchange coupling and the resultant EB effects. The study is a significant step toward vdW heterostructure-based magnetic logic for future low-energy electronics.

The emergence of attractive properties in materials at atomically thin regimes has seen an ongoing interest in two-dimensional (2D) materials. An aspect that has lacked focused attention is the effect of 2D material thickness on its crystal structure. As several layered materials naturally exist in mixed metastable phases, it raises an important question of whether a specific polymorph of these mixed-phase materials will be favored at atomically thin limits. This work attempts to address this issue by employing lead monoxide as a model 2D polymorphic system. We propose a reactive oxygen species (ROS) sequestration-mediated liquid-phase exfoliation (LPE) strategy for the facile synthesis of ultrathin PbO. This is followed by a suite of microscopic and spectroscopic analyses of the PbO nanosheets that reveals the polymorphic transformation of orthorhombic (β) PbO to its tetragonal (α) analogue with reduction in nanosheet thickness. The transformation process reveals an interesting crystal structure of ultrathin 2D PbO where [001]-oriented domains of α-PbO coexist alongside [100]-oriented regions of β-PbO. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations support our experimental data by revealing a higher thermodynamic stability of the tetragonal phase in PbO monolayers. These findings are likely to instigate interest in carefully evaluating the crystal structures of ultrathin 2D materials while promoting research in understanding the phase transformation across a range of 2D crystals.

Ionic liquids are versatile solvents that can be tailored through modification of the cation and anion species. Relatively little is known about the corrosive properties of protic ionic liquids. In this study, we have explored the corrosion of both zinc and copper within a series of protic ionic liquids consisting of alkylammonium or alkanolammonium cations paired with nitrate or carboxylate anions along with three aprotic imidazolium ionic liquids for comparison. Electrochemical studies revealed that the presence of either carboxylate anions or alkanolammonium cations tend to induce a cathodic shift in the corrosion potential. The effect in copper was similar in magnitude for both cations and anions, while the anion effect was slightly more pronounced than that of the cation in the case of zinc. For copper, the presence of carboxylate anions or alkanolammonium cations led to a notable decrease in corrosion current, whereas an increase was typically observed for zinc. The ionic liquid–metal surface interactions were further explored for select protic ionic liquids on copper using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to characterize the interface. From these studies, the oxide species formed on the surface were identified, and copper speciation at the surface linked to ionic liquid and potential dependent surface passivation. Density functional theory and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations revealed that the ethanolammonium cation was more strongly bound to the copper surface than the ethylammonium counterpart. In addition, the nitrate anion was more tightly bound than the formate anion. These likely lead to competing effects on the process of corrosion: the tightly bound cations act as a source of passivation, whereas the tightly bound anions facilitate the electrodissolution of the copper.

Background:Postmarketing evaluations have linked myocarditis to SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccines. We sought to estimate the incidence of myocarditis after mRNA vaccination against SARS-CoV-2, and to compare the incidence with expected rates based on historical background rates in British Columbia.Methods:We conducted an observational study using population health administrative data from the BC COVID-19 Cohort from Dec. 15, 2020, to Mar. 10, 2022. The primary exposure was any dose of an mRNA vaccine against SARS-CoV-2. The primary outcome was incidence of hospital admission or emergency department visit for myocarditis or myopericarditis within 7 and 21 days postvaccination, calculated as myocarditis rates per 100 000 mRNA vaccine doses, expected rates of myocarditis cases and observedto-expected ratios. We stratified analyses by age, sex, vaccine type and dose number.Results:We observed 99 incident cases of myocarditis within 7 days (0.97 cases per 100 000 vaccine doses; observed v. expected ratio 14.81, 95% confidence interval [CI] 10.83–16.55) and 141 cases within 21 days (1.37 cases per 100 000 vaccine doses; observed v. expected ratio 7.03, 95% CI 5.92–8.29) postvaccination. Cases of myocarditis per 100 000 vaccine doses were higher for people aged 12–17 years (2.64, 95% CI 1.54–4.22) and 18–29 years (2.63, 95% CI 1.94–3.50) than for older age groups, for males compared with females (1.64, 95% CI 1.30–2.04 v. 0.35, 95% CI 0.21–0.55), for those receiving a second dose compared with a third dose (1.90, 95% CI 1.50–2.39 v. 0.76, 95% CI 0.45–1.30) and for those who received the mRNA-1273 (Moderna) vaccine compared with the BNT162b2 (Pfizer-BioNTech) vaccine (1.44, 95% CI 1.06–1.91 v. 0.74, 95% CI 0.56–0.98). The highest observed-to-expected ratio was seen after the second dose among males aged 18–29 years who received the mRNA-1273 vaccine (148.32, 95% CI 95.03–220.69).Interpretation:Although absolute rates of myocarditis were low, vaccine type, age and sex are important factors to consider when strategizing vaccine administration to reduce the risk of postvaccination myocarditis. Our findings support the preferential use of the BNT162b2 vaccine over the mRNA-1273 vaccine for people aged 18–29 years.

Tungsten disulfide (WS2) exhibits intriguing tribological properties and has been explored as an excellent lubricious material in thin-film and solid lubricants. However, the poor dispersibility of WS2has been a major challenge for its utilization in liquid lubricant applications. Herein, a top-down integrated approach is presented to synthesize oxygenated WS2(WS2–O) nanosheets viastrong acid-mediated oxidation and ultrasound-assisted exfoliation. The ultrathin sheets of WS2–O, comprising 4–7 molecular lamellae, exhibit oxygen/hydroxyl functionalities. The organosilanes having variable surface-active leaving groups (chloro and ethoxy) are covalently grafted, targeting the hydroxyl/oxygen functionalities on the surface of WS2–O nanosheets. The grafting of organosilanes is governed by the reactivity of chloro and ethoxy leaving groups. The DFT calculations further support the covalent interaction between the WS2–O nanosheets and organosilanes. The alkyl chain-functionalized WS2–O nanosheets displayed excellent dispersibility in mineral lube base oil. A minute dose of chemically functionalized-WS2(0.2 mg.mL–1) notably enhanced the tribological properties of mineral lube oil by reducing the friction coefficient (52%) and wear volume (79%) for a steel tribopair. Raman analysis of worn surfaces revealed WS2-derived lubricious thin film formation. The improved tribological properties are attributed to ultralow thickness, stable dispersion, and low shear strength of chemically functionalized WS2nanosheets, along with protective thin film formation over the contact interfaces of a steel tribopair. The present work opens a new avenue toward exploiting low-dimensional nanosheets for minimizing energy losses due to high friction.

Antimicrobial resistance has rendered many conventional therapeutic measures, such as antibiotics, ineffective. This makes the treatment of infections from pathogenic micro-organisms a major growing health, social, and economic challenge. Recently, nanomaterials, including two-dimensional (2D) materials, have attracted scientific interest as potential antimicrobial agents. Many of these studies, however, rely on the input of activation energy and lack real-world utility. In this work, we present the broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity of few-layered black phosphorus (BP) at nanogram concentrations. This property arises from the unique ability of layered BP to produce reactive oxygen species, which we harness to create this unique functionality. BP is shown to be highly antimicrobial toward susceptible and resistant bacteria and fungal species. To establish cytotoxicity with mammalian cells, we showed that both L929 mouse and BJ-5TA human fibroblasts were metabolically unaffected by the presence of BP. Finally, we demonstrate the practical utility of this approach, whereby medically relevant surfaces are imparted with antimicrobial properties via functionalization with few-layer BP. Given the self-degrading properties of BP, this study demonstrates a viable and practical pathway for the deployment of novel low-dimensional materials as antimicrobial agents without compromising the composition or nature of the coated substrate.

The use of three-dimensional printing in chemistry education has expanded greatly in the past 10 years. The technique has been used to demonstrate a range of concepts including molecular structure, orbitals, and point groups; to produce chemical equipment such as cuvettes and columns; and even to print out mathematical shapes and functions. Here, 3D printing is used to create physical models of two-dimensional NMR spectra and HPLC chromatograms to facilitate student understanding of these challenging concepts. The target audience are undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as university teachers and researchers. Methods to create and print tangible models of the data are presented using the Mathematica and MATLAB programming environments. The models can then be used as useful teaching tools to assist with developing representational competence. The underlying data for the models may be created in-house or obtained from online databases. Instructions to convert the raw data to 3D printable files are provided, and the options for optimizing the resulting files are discussed. These innovative physical models allow students, particularly those who are visual and/or tactile learners, to better understand the complex information presented in multidimensional spectra and chromatograms and enhance student understanding of these forms of data.

Surface paramagnetism of the ZnO(101̅0) facet is a well-known property of this surface and has been explained by the ionosorption of negatively charged oxygen species, which play a significant role in gas sensing and catalysis applications. In this work, we apply density functional theory to show the likelihood of paramagnetic oxygen species on ZnO(101̅0) and the role they play in the desulfurization reactions. We find that paramagnetic oxygen species, which are covalently bonded to the ZnO surface, will significantly enhance the selectivity of the surface toward the adsorption of H2S compared to the adsorption of the other Claus molecules. Moreover, the paramagnetic oxygen desorbs from the surface in the presence of SO2, forming SO3which is a key component in the production of sulfuric acid. The surface oxygen species also acts as a repellent for H2O, reducing the competition between H2O and H2S, which helps alleviate the contamination of reaction sites with water in industrial sulfidation reactions. This work shows the catalytic merit of paramagnetic oxygen species on the surface of ZnO for the desulfurization reaction and can potentially be useful for catalyzing other reactions.

To keep up with the fast-paced transitioning of the global energy sector, which is constantly thriving to enable reliable, economic, and sustainable energy production, catalysis research has been required to continuously evolve in response. The challenges in the existing systems are predominantly due to dependencies on heterogeneous solid catalysts that are susceptible to coking. In this respect, liquid-metal (LM) catalysts have been demonstrated to have a critical advantage over conventional catalysts. Recently, LMs acquired a place in catalysis, with a reputation often synonymous with interesting properties and a remarkable ability to break trade-offs between homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis. This review bridges the fundamental principles of LM research and the recent advances in LM-based thermal and electrochemical catalysis for energy applications. Moreover, emerging approaches for the improved utilization of LMs are outlined, and the concepts requiring greater research attention that could enable the development of exciting energy solutions are highlighted.

Two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenides possess inherent structural characteristics that can be harnessed for enhancement of tribological properties by making them dispersible in lube media. Here, we present a hydrothermal approach to preparing MoS2nanosheets comprising 4–10 molecular lamellae. A structural-defect-mediated route for grafting of octadecylamine (ODA) on MoS2nanosheets is outlined. The unsaturated d orbitals of Mo at the sulfur vacancies on the MoS2surface are coupled with the electron-rich nitrogen center of ODA and yield ODA-functionalized MoS2(MoS2–ODA). The MoS2–ODA nanosheets exhibit good dispersibility in lube base oil and are used as an additive (optimized dose: 0.1 mg·mL–1) to mineral oil. It is shown that even at low concentration, MoS2–ODA nanosheets significantly reduce the friction (48%) and wear (44%). Microscopy (field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM)) and spectroscopy (Raman and elemental mapping) analyses of worn scars revealed the formation of MoS2-based protective thin films for lowering of friction and wear. This work, therefore, presents a pathway for low-friction lubricants by deploying functionalized low-dimensional material systems.

Boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) represent a relatively new class of materials that provides alternative electrical and thermal properties to the carbon analogue. The high chemical and thermal stability and large band gap combined with high electrical resistance make BNNTs desirable in several thin-film applications. In this study, stable BNNT and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) particle dispersions have been developed using environmentally friendly advanced oxidation processing (AOP) that can be further modified for electrophoretic deposition (EPD) to produce thin films. The characterization of the dispersions has revealed how the hydroxyl radicals produced in AOP react with BNNT/hBN and contaminant boron nanoparticles (BNPs). While the radicals remove the carbon contaminant present on BNNT/hBN and increase dispersion stability, they also oxidize the BNPs and the boron oxide produced, which, conversely, reduces the dispersion stability. The use of high- or low-powered ultrasonication in combination with the AOP affects the rate of the competing reactions, with low-powered sonication and AOP providing the best combination for producing stable dispersions with high concentrations. BNNT/hBN dispersions were functionalized with polyethyleneimine to facilitate EPD, where films of several micrometer thickness were readily deposited onto stainless steel and glass-fiber fabrics. BNNT/hBN films produced on glass fabrics by EPD exhibited a consistent through-thickness macroporosity that was facilitated by platelet and nanotube stacking. The film macroporosity present on the coated fabrics was suitable for use as separator layers in supercapacitors and provided improved device robustness with a minimal impact on electrochemical performance.

Multifunctional electronic memories capable of demonstrating both analog and digital switching on-demand are extremely attractive for miniaturization of electronics without significant drain on energy consumption. Simultaneously translating functionality onto mechanically conformable platforms will further enhance their suitability. Here, we demonstrate the ability to engineer multifunctionality in strontium titanate (STO)-based resistive random-access memories (ReRAM) on a flexible polyimide platform. By utilizing different bottom electrodes of various work functions while the top electrode is fixed, differential work functions are induced in STO, to induce bipolar or complementary switching behaviors whenever required. This work-function difference-induced bifunctional switching on the flexible platform reveals a streamlined route for achieving flexible artificial neural networks, high density integration, and logic operation using a single ReRAM.

Metal chalcogenides are important members of the two-dimensional (2D) materials family and have been extensively investigated for high-performance electronic device applications. However, when they are produced on a large-scale, their carrier mobilities are strongly influenced by the surface conditions. Here, we print indium sulphide (In2S3) with the thickness down to the single unit cell limit on wafer-scale out of metallic indium liquid, in which structural indium vacancies are formed in an orderly fashion. First principles investigations reveal that the unique ordered-vacancy structure results in a highly dispersive conduction band with low effective electron mass, forming multiple band-like electronic transport channels sandwiched within the crystal structure which are less influenced by the surface conditions. Back-gated field effect transistors are fabricated, and the measured mobility is up to 58 cm2V−1s−1with a high degree of reproducibility, which is amongst one of the highest reported for wafer-scale-grown ultra-thin metal chalcogenides. This establishes ordered-vacancy-enabled semiconductors in the 2D geometry as suitable alternatives for new generation high-performance electronic devices.

Monolayer black phosphorus (phosphorene) displays mechanical and electronic properties that make it attractive for applications in flexible electronic devices. In this work, the effects of adsorption of fluorine, chlorine, bromine, and iodine on the electronic and structural properties of phosphorene are investigated using density functional theory. We find that adsorption of these atoms on the phosphorene surface causes it to transition from being a direct to an indirect semiconductor and introduces a spin-polarized defect state. Importantly, we find that the effective electron and hole masses in these systems not only are tunable by applying mechanical strain but also vary with the direction of strain across the material. We show that the rotation of the anisotropic electrical conductance of halogen-functionalized phosphorene occurs at a lower strain than the pristine phosphorene. This work shows that the rich interplay between the electronic and the mechanical properties of functionalized phosphorene is promising for the development of flexible spintronic circuit components.

Two-dimensional (2D) wide bandgap materials are gaining significant interest for next-generation optoelectronic devices. However, fabricating electronic-grade 2D nanosheets from non-van der Waals (n-vdW) oxide semiconductors poses a great challenge due to their stronger interlayer coupling compared with vdW crystals. This strong coupling typically introduces defects during exfoliation, impairing the optoelectronic properties. Herein, we report the liquid-phase exfoliation of few-atomic-layer thin, defect-free, free-standing ZnO nanosheets. These micron-sized, ultrathin ZnO structures exhibit three different orientations aligned along both the polar c-plane as well as the nonpolar a- and m-planes. The superior crystalline quality of the ZnO nanosheets is validated through comprehensive characterization techniques. This result is supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, which reveals that the formation of oxygen vacancies is energetically less favorable in 2D ZnO and that the c-plane loses its polarity upon exfoliation. Unlike bulk ZnO, which is typically dominated by defect-induced emission, the exfoliated nanosheets exhibit a strong, ambient-stable excitonic UV emission. We further demonstrate the utility of solution processing of ZnO nanosheets by their hybrid integration with organic components to produce stable light emitting diodes (LEDs) for display applications.

Chromism-based optical filters is a niche field of research, due to there being only a handful of electrochromic materials. Typically, electrochromic transition metal oxides such as MoO3and WO3are utilized in applications such as smart windows and electrochromic devices (ECD). Herein, we report MoO3–x-based electrically activated ultraviolet (UV) filters. The MoO3–xgrown on indium tin oxide (ITO) substrate is mechanically assembled onto an electrically activated proton exchange membrane. Reversible H+injection/extraction in MoO3–xis employed to switch the optical transmittance, enabling an electrically activated optical filter. The devices exhibit broadband transmission modulation (325–800 nm), with a peak of ∼60% in the UV-A range (350–392 nm). Comparable switching times of 8 s and a coloration efficiency of up to 116 cm2C–1are achieved.

As lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries approach their theoretical limits, alternative energy storage systems that can power technology with greater energy demands must be realized. Li-metal batteries, particularly Li-air batteries (LABs), are considered a promising energy storage candidate due to their inherent lightweight and energy-dense properties. Unfortunately, LAB practicality remains hindered by inadequate oxygen solubility and diffusion rates within the electrolyte, both which are fundamental for LAB operation. Due to exceptionally high oxygen solubilities, perfluorochemicals (PFCs) have been investigated as a promising solution to this issue. Although PFCs have been reported to enhance LAB performance and longevity when implemented within the cathodic regions of LABs in several studies, the influence of this class of compounds on other components of the battery (including the anode and the electrolyte) is also highly important. This paper reviews the use of PFCs in LABs to date and discusses the performance enhancements resulting from their implementation. We identify and discuss future prospects and emerging research directions for the use of PFCs into LAB design, in the effort toward realization of high-performing LAB technologies.

This paper outlines a protocol, which combines quantum mechanics calculations and experimental synthesis, to enable systematic selection of suitable chromophores based on their stability of fluorescence and efficiency of the chemical reaction. The experimental conditions were optimised for the esterification of fatty acids with the most effective chromophore, 5-(4-(diphenylamine)phenylthiopheny-2-yl)methanol.

New structures of bilayer GaN displaying buckling are revealed, and their structural and electronic properties are studied using first-principles calculations. Layered GaN is a promising two-dimensional material of the III–V family with a sizable band gap. The impact of buckling and the difference in atomic structure of the different models lead to significant changes in the electronic structure, including an indirect-to-direct band gap transition. Because of the small energy difference between different models, it can be expected that at room temperature, regions of the material may have different structures that coexist. The possibility to tailor the structural and electronic properties of bilayer GaN by applying an external strain is also explored. Under tensile strain, all structures tend to become flat, whereas under biaxial compressive strain, buckled structures are favored, with an indirect-to-direct band gap transition.

The article offers tips that law librarians can use to create customized self-directed technology training programs and resources, from a session between the authors at 2017 American Association of Law Libraries (AALL) Annual Meeting. Topics discussed include the importance of change management in training initiatives; the use of software such as Adobe Captivate to create e-learning content; and the need to incorporate electronic workflows into courts and public law libraries.

Effectively monitoring the spread of SARS-CoV-2 mutants is essential to efforts to counter the ongoing pandemic. Predicting lineage abundance from wastewater, however, is technically challenging. We show that by sequencing SARS-CoV-2 RNA in wastewater and applying algorithms initially used for transcriptome quantification, we can estimate lineage abundance in wastewater samples. We find high variability in signal among individual samples, but the overall trends match those observed from sequencing clinical samples. Thus, while clinical sequencing remains a more sensitive technique for population surveillance, wastewater sequencing can be used to monitor trends in mutant prevalence in situations where clinical sequencing is unavailable.

Veterans residing in underserved rural areas face many barriers to accessing high-quality rehabilitation services. This article describes the benefits and challenges of using technology for delivery of rehabilitation services to rural Veterans using TeleHOME, an innovative tele-rehabilitation program. TeleHOME enables rehabilitation providers to remotely assess the Veteran's functional abilities and needs in his or her own home where these tasks must be performed. This technology increases the ability of all team members to contribute to interdisciplinary care, but also requires greater levels of team integration. One month after the completion of the TeleHOME project, we met with clinicians to discuss their perceptions of whether and how use of the technology affected interdisciplinary care processes, and what approaches were used to meet team-based goals. TeleHOME can improve access to rehabilitation services for rural Veterans, but will also bring about novel integrative care processes that may improve the effectiveness of such services. Recommendations to overcome challenges to optimize the implementation and delivery of TeleHOME services as well as to better inform clinicians working with rural Veterans are discussed.

Preharvest sprouting of grains causes significant losses to growers and buyers. The problem occurs throughout the world, and economic losses can be millions of dollars. Visual assessment of germination is ineffective because even grains showing no external signs (e.g., having a visible shoot) may still have germinated sufficiently so that it is no longer possible for high-quality products to be made from them. Current procedures to determine whether a grain has germinated are based around measuring enzyme or starch levels. However, despite protracted efforts to develop enhanced ways to measure germination over the last 50 years, there are currently no sufficiently accurate or reliable approaches available. The present work assesses the potential for infrared spectroscopy-based metabolomic profiling to assess the germination of barley and wheat. The results indicate that mid- and near-infrared spectroscopy are able to determine if the grain has germinated and give an indication of how long the germination process has been occurring. Both techniques are already well established in the grain industry and have the potential to form the basis of a simple, fast dockside test that would allow segregation of sound and mildly sprouted grain.

Silicon nanosheets (or multilayer silicene) are one of the most exciting recent discoveries, being a two-dimensional form of silicon that is less than a nanometer thick, with large lateral dimensions. It has been shown previously that organo-modified silicene can be synthesized with phenyl groups covalently bonded to both sides of the nanosheet, with hydrogen atoms terminating the undercoordinated silicon atoms (J. Am. Chem. Soc.2010, 132, 5946−5947; Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys.2011, 13, 15418–15422). In this work, we use density functional theory calculations and ab initio molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to determine the effect of hydroxyl (OH) group substitution on the phenyl-modified silicene. We show that van der Waals forces need to be included in the simulation to represent the interactions between the groups on the nanosheet. Different positions of the OH groups on the phenyl rings were modeled including ortho-, meta-, and para-substituted positions. The para-substituted position was favored, followed by the meta- then ortho-substituted positions. Our ab initio MD simulations showed that the phenol groups will freely rotate on the nanosheet, aligning so as to form hydrogen bonds between adjacent phenol groups. Such a property may allow the material to be soluble in aqueous solutions, extending its application areas.

Objective: The PreventionLink of Southern Maryland is a 5-year project to eliminate barriers to participation and retention in the National Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) lifestyle change program to prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes in adults with prediabetes. This is the study to identify the obstacles to participation and retention in the DPP lifestyle change program among high burden populations and learn how CHWs have reduced the identified barriers to participation and retention for high burden populations.Methods: We followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) to conduct this literature review. We have used the Scopus and PubMed, including all types of studies and peer-reviewed documents published in English between 2010 and 2020.Results: From 131 identified articles, 18 articles were selected for qualitative synthesis. The reviewed literature documented following as main barriers to participate in a DPP lifestyle change program: time, cost, lack of transportation, cost of transportation, commute distance, technology access, access to facilities and community programs, caregiver responsibilities, lack of health literacy and awareness, and language. CHWs can address these barriers to participation and retention, they were involved in educating and supporting roles; they worked as bridges between healthcare providers and participants and as intervention team members.Conclusions: Diabetes prevention program participants with social determinant risk factors who most need CHW services are unlikely to have financial resources to pay for CHW services out-of-pocket. Hence, the public and private health plans that pay for their prediabetes care should consider paying for these CHW services and there is a need to trust more to CHW and have them as a “community health teams” member.
