Abstract

Photovoltaic (PV) installations have traditionally relied on a conventional south-facing orientation, which maximizes energy production at noon but has lower energy generation in the morning and afternoon. Vertical photovoltaic (VPV) systems have emerged as promising alternatives to address this inconsistency. Vertical photovoltaic systems can enhance energy generation by facing east in the morning and west in the afternoon. We compared the performance of n-tunnel oxide passivated contact (n-TOPCon) and p-passivated emitter and rear contact (p-PERC) cells in vertical photovoltaic systems to determine whether the optimal installation direction of bifacial vertical photovoltaics is east or west. Our findings indicated that n-TOPCon cells exhibited higher energy yields than p-PERC cells, with a difference of approximately 8%, attributed to the superior bifaciality and lower temperature coefficient of power of n-TOPCon. Additionally, the energy yield was higher for n-TOPCon modules when the front faced east, whereas the PERC modules performed better with a west-facing front. This contributes to the knowledge of the factors for energy production in vertical photovoltaic systems and the optimization of installation configurations.

17. Complete Spectrum of CRISPR/Cas9-induced Mutations on HBV cccDNA

Abstract

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) causes chronic infections that cannot yet be cured. The virus persists in infected hepatocytes, because covalently closed circular DNA (cccDNA), the template for the transcription of viral RNAs, is stable in nondividing cells. Antiviral therapies with nucleoside analogues inhibit HBV DNA synthesis in capsids in the cytoplasm of infected hepatocytes, but do not destroy nuclear cccDNA. Because over 200 million people are still infected, a cure for chronic hepatitis B (CHB) has become one of the major challenges in antiviral therapy. As a first step toward the development of curative therapies, we previously demonstrated that the CRISPR/Cas9 system can be used to functionally inactivate cccDNA derived from infectious HBV. Moreover, some evidence suggests that certain cytokines might induce an APOBEC-mediated cascade leading to the destruction of cccDNA. In this report we investigated whether a combination of the two mechanisms could act synergistically to inactivate cccDNA. Using next generation sequencing (NGS), we determined the complete spectrum of mutations in cccDNA following Cas9 cleavage and repair by nonhomologous end joining (NHEJ). We found that over 90% of HBV DNA was cleaved by Cas9. In addition our results showed that editing of HBV DNA after Cas9 cleavage is at least 15,000 times more efficient that APOBEC-mediated cytosine deamination following treatment of infected cells with interferon alpha (IFNα). We also found that a previously used method to detect cytosine deaminated DNA, termed 3D-PCR, overestimates the amount and frequency of edited HBV DNA. Taken together, our results demonstrated that the CRISPR/Cas9 system is so far the best method to functionally inactivate HBV cccDNA and provide a cure for CHB.

19. Enhanced Supercapacitive Performance of Chemically Grown Cobalt–Nickel Hydroxides on Three-Dimensional Graphene Foam Electrodes

Abstract

Chemical growth of mixed cobalt–nickel hydroxides (CoxNi1–x(OH)2), decorated on graphene foam (GF) with desirable three-dimensional (3D) interconnected porous structure as electrode and its potential energy storage application is discussed. The nanostructured CoxNi1–x(OH)2films with different Ni:Co (x) compositions on GF are prepared by using the chemical bath deposition (CBD) method. The structural studies (X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) of electrodes confirm crystalline nature of CoxNi1–x(OH)2/GF and crystal structure consists of Ni(OH)2and Co(OH)2. The morphological properties reveal that nanorods of Co(OH)2reduce in size with increases in nickel content and are converted into Ni(OH)2nanoparticles. The electrochemical performance reveals that the Co0.66Ni0.33(OH)2/GF electrode has maximum specific capacitance of ∼1847 F g–1in 1 M KOH within a potential window 0 to 0.5 V vs Ag/AgCl at a discharge current density of 5 A g–1. The superior pseudoelectrochemical properties of cobalt and nickel are combined and synergistically reinforced with high surface area offered by a conducting, porous 3D graphene framework, which stimulates effective utilization of redox characteristics and communally improves electrochemical performance with charge transport and storage.

Abstract

Abstract: Pure phase K4Zr5O12 is synthesized via solid state method in the present work. Various K/Zr ratios and temperatures are applied, and the synthesis process is investigated in detail by means of X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Its catalytic activity for soot oxidation is studied by temperature programmed oxidation with different types of soot/catalyst contacts. It is revealed that K4Zr5O12 is very active in the presence of 2–10% O2 for both tight and loose contacts (T p(tight) =335°C, T p(ethanol) =355°C and T p(shaking) =370°C). Thermal stability study shows that K4Zr5O12 is highly stable up to at least 900°C. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

Long-term air pollution exposure has been suggested to increase the risk of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, the association between short-term air pollution exposure and ADHD-related outcomes is still unknown. We investigated the associations between short-term exposure to particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter ≤10 μm (PM 10), nitrogen oxide (NO 2), and sulfur dioxide (SO 2) and hospital admissions with a principal diagnosis of ADHD among adolescents (age 10–19 years) in 16 regions of the Republic of Korea from 2013 to 2015. We estimated the region-specific relative risks (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) from quasi-Poisson regressions adjusted for potential confounders, considering single-day and moving average lag. Consequently, we performed meta-analyses to pool the region-specific estimates. The risks of ADHD-related hospital admissions were increased in the single-day and moving average lag models for PM 10 (largest association for lag 1 in the single-day lag model, RR = 1.12, 95% CI: 1.05, 1.20; lag 0–2 in the moving average lag model, RR = 1.17, 95% CI: 1.07, 1.27), NO 2 (lag 3, RR = 1.47, 95% CI: 1.25, 1.73; lag 1–3, RR = 1.68, 95% CI: 1.38, 2.04), and SO 2 (lag 1, RR = 1.27, 95% CI: 1.14, 1.41; lag 1–3, RR = 1.29, 95% CI: 1.12, 1.49). The associations were similar between boys and girls, but they were stronger among adolescents aged 15–19 years than those aged 10–14 years for NO 2 and SO 2. In conclusion, the results indicate that short-term exposure to PM 10 , NO 2 , and SO 2 may be a risk factor for the exacerbation of ADHD symptoms, leading to hospitalization. 24. Can PCL-R Predict Implicit Aggression among Korean Inmates?

Abstract

Traditional forms of risk assessment tools in the correctional arena have their strengths and weaknesses in recidivism prediction. One of the more robust risk assessment tools used by clinicians, psychologists and psychiatrists, the PCL-R (psychopath checklist—revised: Hare, 1991) has been found to be powerful for predicting recidivism and other violent outcomes. Internationally, the literature reports a significant relationship between PCL-R measured psychopathy and recidivism. This paper focuses on the relationship between PCL-R scores and implicit dangerousness (as opposed to explicit verbal or physical aggression) measured by correctional officers' combined evaluations. Various studies identify Factor 2 as being a more significant predictor of higher levels of disruptive institutional behavior and recidivism than Factor 1 (Walters, 2003). The primary objective of this paper is to examine the link between psychopathy and implicit aggression. If we find an association with psychopathy and implicit aggression, we can suggest that Factor 2 between the two sub-psychopathic traits (Factor 1 and Factor 2) is a better predictor for implicit dangerousness. 25. Examining the Ability of the PCL-R to Predict Recidivism in a Korean Offender Sample.

Abstract

The construct of psychopathy has several uses within the field of criminal justice. The Psychopathy Checklist - Revised (Hare, 1991) is one of the most utilized and robust tools that researchers and clinicians have to assess this construct. Numerous studies in North America have indicated the effectiveness of the PCL-R to predict future criminal and violent behavior (e.g., Heilbrun et al., 1998; Glover et al, 2002). The effectiveness of the PCL-R has also been extended to other countries such as the United Kingdom (Reiss et al., 2000) and New Zealand (Wilson, 2000). Although the PCL-R has been translated into the Korean language, no research has examined its effectiveness to predict recidivism within this Asian population. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between the PCL-R and recidivism in a Korean offender sample. The PCL-R scores of 451 Korean male inmates will be utilized to examine the relationship between psychopathy and recidivism in this population and to assess whether the PCL-R is effective in the prediction of recidivism in this part of the world. Eighty seven offenders have recidivated either generally, violently, or sexually. 28. Adverse Prognostic Impact of Neutrophil-to-Lymphocyte Ratio and Platelet-to-Lymphocyte Ratio in Patients with Diffuse Large B Cell Lymphoma

Abstract

Neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) have been lightened as a prognostic factor in many types of solid tumor. However, there was a limited report for diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL). Thus, we investigated the impact of NLR and PLR on prognosis of patients with DLBCL. This study involved 234 DLBCL patients treated by rituximab plus cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisolone (R-CHOP) at National Cancer Center, Korea. The median patient age was 57 years, and 135 patients (58%) were men. Clinical characteristics as international prognostic index (IPI) including age, performance, LDH, stage and extra-nodal involvement, were evaluated. NLR and PLR at diagnosis were calculated by CBC data from automated hematologic analyzer XE2100 (Sysmex, Kobe, Japan) or differential count which was done by manually using stained peripheral blood slide when CBC data showed flags in auto-analyzer. Hazard ratios (HRs) were determined in terms of risk for overall survival using Cox proportional hazard regression analysis. The mean percentage of neutrophils and lymphocytes was 60 (range, 5-95) and 12 (2-79), and the number of platelets was 257 × 10^9/L (28-839). The mean and standard deviation of NLR and PLR was 3.62 (±4.77) and 14.7 (±20.16), respectively. IPI and stage were predictors for prognosis (p <0.01), and both NLR and PLR showed significant association with poor prognosis of HRs of 1.14 [95% confidence interval (CI), 1.10 to 1.20] and 1.02 [95%CI, 1.02-1.03]. Although both NLR and PLR represented association with IPI, there were still prognostic impacts as HR of 1.12 and 1.02 with IPI in multivariate analysis. These findings suggest that NRL and PLR may be significant prognostic indicators for patients with DLBCL treated by R-CHOP.
