Objective: This study used social dominance theory and the jobs demands–resources model to (a) examine child protective services (CPS) workers' trajectories of client violence, including yelling, threats, and physical violence over job tenure and (b) assess how demographic characteristics and job attributes contributed to the trajectories. Method: Using data from a longitudinal study of newly hired CPS workers (n = 837–859 depending on outcome), we examined trajectories of client violence from 6 months to 3.5 years. Multilevel mixed effect logistic regression was used to examine how demographic variables and time-lagged job attribute predictors (e.g., caseload characteristics, time pressure, role demands) contributed to the occurrence of client violence over time. Results: Over the study period, the experience of being yelled at declined from 80% to 64%. Being threatened declined from nearly 48% to nearly 39%, while physical violence did not change. Younger and White workers as well as women generally experienced higher rates of nonphysical violence. Caseload difficulty, role demands, and time pressure related to higher rates of nonphysical violence, while organizational supports were not significant. Physical violence occurred sporadically; time pressure was the only significant variable. The influence of job attributes on each form of violence did not change over time. Conclusions: The high rates of nonphysical violence, particularly during early tenure, suggest the need for providing vulnerable workers the skills to assess for and manage client violence. When violence occurs, developing responsive protocols for CPS workers at all levels can nourish a culture of safety thereby reducing future incidents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper proposes a novel multi-attribute decision-making (MADM) method for interval rough numbers (IRNs) considering different distribution types, namely uniform, exponential, and normal distributions. Upper and lower approximate interval dominance degrees are defined and aggregated using dynamic weights to obtain pairwise comparisons of IRNs. The properties of dominance are verified, and an attribute weight determination method based on the dominance balance degree is introduced. The proposed MADM method is data-driven and does not rely on the subjective preferences of decision-makers. Case analysis demonstrates the effectiveness and rationality of the proposed method, revealing that the distribution type of IRNs significantly impacts decision results, potentially leading to reversed ranking outcomes. This article aimed to explore individual level factors as predictors of misogynistic attitudes. Given that misogyny and activity on online forums related to so called incel-dom is growing and has been identified as a terrorist threat, it becomes important to better understand the underpinnings of misogynistic attitudes, also in a normal population. Based on previous research and theory, entitlement, Social Dominance Orientation and Right-wing authoritarianism was explored as well as the moderating role of being single among American men (N = 302). Results from an online survey showed that all three predictors as well as being single (compared to being in a relationship) significantly predicted misogynistic attitudes. The effect of SDO was moderated by relationship status such that singles who were high SDO expressed most misogyny. This study aims to identify the relationship between the patterns of brain dominance and the increase in academic achievement among psychology students in Jordanian universities. Descriptive approach was used. The instrument used was the brain dominance patterns scale which consists of 27 items. The study sample was selected randomly and consisted of 386 male and female psychology students from Jordanian universities. The results showed a statistically significant negative relationship between brain dominance patterns and the increase in academic achievement. Also, the results showed statistically significant difference at 0.05 due to the effect of gender in all brain dominance patterns that characterize psychology students in Jordanian universities, and the differences showed that females scored higher than males. This paper reports on a network-based investigation of the gendered nature of work in the screen sector. Using nine years of Australian film and television production data, we explore how the networks of project-based collaboration might explain the disparities in the career trajectories of men and women. Our analysis finds that projects with men as directors tend to reproduce familiar teams to the exclusion of women, while projects led by women in key creative roles tend to make more space for women. Moreover, we find that there is a significant number of men who only work with men (regardless of whether they have worked with them before), but no corresponding group of women who only work with women. Our findings bear on proposed equity interventions, especially government policies designed to encourage women to enter the industry. Ultimately, even accounting for the statistical domination of men in the network, we argue that inequities in the organisation of the screen sector appear to be driven much more by the closed network behaviours of men than they are by the positioning or behaviour of women. • Men's clear dominance in camera departments is most pronounced in higher-level roles. • We analyse gender inequities in the sector's networks of project-based collaboration. • Projects led by women in key creative roles tend to make more space for women. • Homophilous collaboration tendencies are displayed by many more men than women. • Gender equity policy ought to target the closed, exclusive collaboration behaviours of men. Through his most controversial yet prominent Epic titled "Paradise Lost" (1667), John Milton, the renowned English intellect and writer, addresses the ideology of free will and questions the existing hegemony of supreme power and dominance. This research will also discuss the purpose of having a choice and how it all began initially. The character of the 'fallen angel' and how he is not seen as a pessimist but a transforming being moulded under the circumstances laid for him. This perspective will be analyzed thoroughly, and the way Milton takes a stand for Satan to give us readers a whole new angle of interpretation will also be dwelt upon and further examined in this paper. Exposure to pesticides can profoundly alter community dynamics. It is expected that dominance patterns will be enhanced or reduced depending on whether the dominant species is less or more sensitive to the pesticide than the subdominant species. Community dynamics are, however, also determined by processes linked to population growth as well as competition at carrying capacity. Here, we used a mesocosm experiment to quantify the effect of chlorpyrifos exposure on the population dynamics of four cladoceran species (Daphnia magna, Daphnia pulicaria, Daphnia galeata and Scapholeberis mucronata) in mixed cultures, testing for direct effects of chlorpyrifos and indirect effects mediated by interactions with other species on the timing of population growth and dominance at carrying capacity. We also quantified whether the pesticide‐induced changes in community dynamics affected top‐down control of phytoplankton. By adding a treatment in which we used different genotype combinations of each species, we also tested to what extent genetic composition affects community responses to pesticide exposure. Immobilization tests showed that D. magna is the least sensitive to chlorpyrifos of the tested species. Chlorpyrifos exposure first leads to a reduction in the abundance of D. galeata to the benefit of D. pulicaria, and subsequently to a reduction in densities of D. pulicaria to the benefit of D. magna. This resulted in D. magna being more dominant in the pesticide than in the control treatment by the end of the experiment. There was no effect of genotypic differences on community patterns, and top‐down control of phytoplankton was high in all treatments. Our results suggest that in this community dominance patterns are enhanced in line with the observed among‐species differences in sensitivity to the pesticide. In times of a pandemic, the world lives in the throes of colossal economic and public health crises. The world seems unprepared and ill-equipped to cater to the catastrophic pandemic of COVID-19. The apocalyptic infectious diseases keep revisiting to expose the global widening economic and health inequalities. This review in its different sections argues that with the "financialization of everything," a new consciousness comprising a more general heightened sense of awareness and interest in personal health and well-being pervades whereby citizens become customers. This effectively forefends the dynamics of interaction between the individual and her/his environment with its consequent impact on health and promotes an individuated risk and responsibility. Even in times of a pandemic, draconian state surveillance, lockdown, behavior modification, self-help, and self-care have emerged as guiding principles of public health. While major sporting mega-events have begun to feature equitable amounts of coverage, portrayals of male and female athletes can reinforce gender stereotypes about sports. It is important to examine viewer preferences for broadcasts featuring male and female athletes to determine if viewing choices reflect stereotypical sporting beliefs and behaviors. Drawing on gender schema theory and social dominance orientation, this study examines viewing behaviors during sports broadcasts that vary by the sex of the athlete and the perceived gender of the sport. The role of entrepreneurship in inclusive development of the economy is widely recognised by policy makers and academicians. The present study analyses various dimensions of entrepreneurship among one of the disadvantaged groups in India, namely, the SCs. The study used primary data collected from 162 SC and 60 non-SC entrepreneurs in five districts of Telangana. The findings of the empirical investigation indicate that there is a changing attitude of entrepreneurship among the SCs. Countering the previous studies on entrepreneurship among disadvantaged groups in India, the present study indicates that entrepreneurship among the SCs is positively motivated with dominance of nonpecuniary motives and they are eager to be independent rather than being in the shadow of economic distress. Moreover, SC entrepreneurs are involved in similar value-added sectors like others, managed to employ similar level of fixed capital and workers as others, managed to report similar level of growth in size, and managed to secure formal credit like banks for their fixed capital requirements. In this article, we investigated the influence of mother's occupational status on her child's educational outcomes and to what extent this depends on father's occupational status. Based on the Breen and Goldthorpe (1997) model, we expected that mother's occupational status positively affects the educational outcomes of her child, although this influence may be weaker than father's influence due to remains of traditional gender roles in the Netherlands. Second, we expected that daughters benefit more from mother's occupational status than sons. Finally, we derived from the dominance model (Erikson, 1984) that the positive influence of mother's occupational status becomes weaker when father's occupational status is higher. The three hypotheses were tested with datasets from the LISS panel in 2012 on 1.176 Dutch participants who grew up in dual earner households. The results of multilevel regression analyses show that mother's occupational status indeed has a moderately positive effect on her child's education level. This effect does not differ between sons and daughters and is independent of fathers' occupational status. Unexpectedly, father's occupational status does not affect his child's educational level when mother's occupational status is taken into account. Relying on Heidegger’s recently issued Black Notebooks, where the “shepherd of being” qua “mortal” is discussed as the “future man”, this paper tackles poverty and mortality, along with their mutual bond, in light of the tension established by Heidegger between Gestell and Ereignis, namely, between the global dominance of technology and the liberation of earth from the despotic dominion of human beings. First, light is cast upon the dominance of technology, which “distorts” the Ereignis of the world, which is yet to arrive, by holding back its very arrival. Second, the focus shifts to the philosophical meaning of poverty, which relies on mortality understood as radical dispossession. Since poverty is the essential feature of the “future man”, the “shepherd of being”, as well as the basis for a different take on our use of technological devices, the innermost link between poverty and technology is also addressed. Furthermore, the comparison with Pope Francis’s two recent encyclicals is established, in order to highlight the specific philosophical meaning conferred to poverty by Heidegger, especially with respect to our behavior toward technology. This article is meant to serve as a resource for white student affairs practitioners to continue to consider their role in engaging in anti-racism work by learning about both theoretical and practical tools. Through the lens of Critical Race Theory, this piece examines the way racism is used as a tool by those with power to marginalize and harm Black individuals and communities people specifically through a higher education and student affairs context. Before the exodus of many people and the political leadership from the territory of Tibet, both the macro-governmental and micro everyday sociocultural existence were dominated by Buddhist religion and religious personalities. The wealth of the nation was decided and measured by the ever-increasing number of grand monasteries and religious personalities. This article argues that after more than six decades of democratic internal governance in exile, the earlier dominance of religion and religious personalities has now taken a hegemonic turn in this democracy without territory. Despite the Fourteenth Dalai Lama's unprecedented decision to relinquish his formal governmental authority in exile, the continued dominance of religion in the polity and everyday life of Tibetans is notable and is critically examined in this article. With the redundancy and complexity of information and data, how to acquire the samples that meet the requirements is an inevitable task in data analysis. There is a general consensus that the neighborhood rough set (NRS) has become the mainstream method for data mining and knowledge classification. Whereas, the limitations still exist in the neighborhood relation for it cannot more accurately reflect the dominance relations that commonly exist in actual data, nor can it select the required data according to different conditions. Enlightened by this idea, this paper focuses on the intuitionistic fuzzy neighborhood dominance relation, which both refines the relationship between samples in the neighborhood and mines the needed samples in data analysis. On this basis, we define the neighborhood dominance rough set (NDRS) model in intuitionistic fuzzy ordered information system (IFOIS). Moreover, we establish the multigranulation neighborhood dominance rough set (MNDRS) from multiple perspectives, and discuss related properties between NDRS and MNDRS. Meanwhile, we compare the NDRS with other rough set models from the roughness and the dependence degree viewpoints. Net primary productivity (NPP) stands as a crucial indicator of ecosystem health and carbon cycling, shaped by a complex interplay of climate change and anthropogenic disturbances. Understanding the relative contributions of these factors is essential for informing strategies aimed at achieving carbon neutrality and peaking emissions. In this study, we used the Carnegie-Ames-Stanford-Approach (CASA) model to assess NPP dynamics in the ecologically fragile area of the middle Hengduan Mountains on the southeastern Tibetan Plateau (TPHM). Dominance Analysis (DA) was employed to quantify and visualize the relative importance of climate change and anthropogenic disturbances on NPP. Our findings revealed significant annual fluctuations in NPP, with 61.8% of the area experiencing improvement in NPP, although the overall trend was not statistically significant. Needleleaf forests and mixed forests below medium elevation (< 4000 m) suffered negative impacts from human activity intensity, while vegetation at medium-high elevation (4000–5000 m) showed positive effects. The area dominated by anthropogenic disturbances influencing NPP accounted for 49.16% of the study area, followed by combined effects (36.86%) and climatic factors (13.98%). Human activity intensity, particularly in nature reserves, emerged as the predominant driver of NPP in plateau regions, while climatic factors primarily drove NPP decline in river valleys and a few alpine mountains. Moreover, combined effects contributed to NPP enhancement in most regions. This study underscores the critical role of human activity intensity in shaping NPP dynamics in high-elevation regions of the Tibetan Plateau, providing valuable insights for ecological conservation and carbon stock enhancement efforts in ecologically fragile areas. We examined how children reason about dominance and prestige in Colombia, Finland, and the USA, contexts that vary in terms of societal inequality and hierarchical organization. We tested 496 children aged 4–11 years old to determine whether they: i) recognized and discriminated between dominance and prestige, ii) preferred to learn from a dominant or prestigious character, iii) assigned leadership to a dominant or prestigious character, and iv) self-identified more with a dominant or subordinate character. Older children were more likely to recognize, prefer, learn from, and assign leadership to the prestigious character, and to identify with the subordinate. There were no cross-cultural differences in learning preferences, supporting evolutionary theories that posit a universal bias towards social learning from prestigious individuals. There was variation in leadership preferences; children were the most likely to assign leadership to a prestigious character in more egalitarian Finland, and least likely in more unequal Colombia. American culture's emphasis on individualism has been identified by those directly engaged with fighting the COVID-19 pandemic and by popular cultural commentators as problematic in mustering the collective social consciousness and self-sacrifice necessary to mount a successful pandemic response. This concern is supported by emerging academic research which postulates a relationship between a culture's relative balance between individualism and collectivism and the success of its pandemic response. Big data analysis suggests an inverse relationship between individualistic cultural traits and success in pandemic mitigation. Although the relative advantages and disadvantages of American individualism have been debated since Tocqueville, a recent rise in the dominance of individualism within the American psyche has been noted by both sides of the political spectrum with conservative commentary expressing concern over radical individualism and more left-leaning commentary finding increasing acceptance of libertarian principles perilous to the common good. Paralleling this rise in individualism are neo-liberal efforts at education reform that culminated in No Child Left Behind and its successor Every Student Succeeds. Such comprehensive neo-liberal reform efforts engender increased cultural individualism in three ways: by narrowing curriculum definitions and content to a core that excludes issues of citizenship; by increasing direct instruction that limits students' opportunities to engage with others in meaningful educational tasks; and most importantly, by creating an accountability superstructure based solely on decontextualized evaluations of isolated students, educators, and schools. The decades-long dominance of neo-liberal reform efforts create an educational environment which reinforces the cultural individualism hampering a successful American response to COVID-19. Masculine facial morphology (e.g., larger jaw, prominent cheekbones) have been linked to a suite of social outcomes—including greater wealth, career progress, romantic desirability, and even greater political success. (2013) published the first study to demonstrate that masculine facial cues (e.g., large nose, deep-set eyes) similarly predict both dominance judgments and real-world fighting success, but no studies have replicated these popular findings that a large and specific assortment of masculine facial structures are implicated in both fighting ability and dominance perception. Thus, we conducted a pre-registered direct replication and extension of Třebický et al. (2013). Two separate samples of United States MTurk participants rated 516 UFC fighters' facial photographs on perceived aggressiveness (N = 500) and fighting ability (N = 500). Results showed that perceived aggressiveness was associated with masculine facial morphology (e.g., large nose, deep-set eyes) independent of bodily size. There was also some evidence that perceived fighting ability was associated with masculine facial morphology, which disappeared after controlling for bodily size. There was no support for the relation between facial structure and fighting success, and there were often negative relations between perceived aggressiveness and fighting ability on fighting success (i.e., more successful fighters were perceived as less successful and aggressive). We argue that our evolved psychology differentially processes the distinct avenues to victory that constitute overall fighting success (e.g., knockout versus submission wins). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: This paper aims to explore the relationship between religious and linguistic nationalism in Sri Lanka in the context of the controversy on singing the national anthem in Tamil during National Independence Day celebrations. It illuminates how language and religious policy work together to maintain Sinhala–Buddhist hegemony and exclude Tamil speakers as second-class citizens in postcolonial Sri Lanka. Design/methodology/approach: The examination of the anthem controversy includes language and religious policy documents, newspaper articles and YouTube videos. Findings: The national anthem as a site of struggle is a powerful case to explore how nation-states' actors mobilize affect, intertwining ideologies on language, religion, ethnicity, geography, and so on to maintain and reinforce dominance over minoritized groups. Therefore, the authors believe that (singing) the national anthem can be a site of study for language policy. Research limitations/implications: The authors acknowledge that the data used in this study are only in Sinhala and English and identify the need for further research using data sources in Tamil. Originality/value: While this paper generally contributes to the scholarly dialogues on religion and language, it also sheds light on understanding politics in Sri Lanka. Finally, the authors propose that any meaningful policy implementation efforts toward achieving linguistic justice in Sri Lanka need to include parallel policy changes that promote equality among religions. Given the salience and rise of anti-immigrant sentiments in the United States, Mexican immigrants who are not integrated into the American cultural system, are undocumented, or are men may be particularly susceptible to negative treatment. Moreover, people who are high in social dominance orientation (SDO) endorse social hierarchies and are more likely to perceive groups from a lower status less positively. Using a 2 × 2 × 2 between-subjects experimental design, we presented participants (N = 243) with a vignette describing a Mexican immigrant who differed on acculturation strategy (assimilated or separated), documentation status (documented or undocumented), and gender (woman or man). We then asked participants to answer questions about the Mexican immigrant and complete an SDO scale. Overall, participants had more negative perceptions of separated (vs. assimilated) and undocumented (vs. documented) Mexican immigrants, and they felt less positively about Mexican immigrant women (vs. men). Participants with high SDO felt more negatively about separated (vs. assimilated) Mexican immigrants. Additionally, participants perceived the separated (vs. assimilated) Mexican immigrant as being more representative of Mexican immigrants as a group, but they identified more with the assimilated (vs. separated) Mexican immigrant. We also assessed participants' attitudes toward Mexican immigrants in general and found that they perceived greater competitiveness toward undocumented (vs. documented) Mexican immigrants. These findings provide important insight into factors that impact U.S. perceptions of Mexican immigrants—a starting point to better understand and improve relations between the U.S. public and Mexican immigrants. This article aims to access the image of Mexico produced by the German press over fifteen years, starting at the dawn of the new millennium, when the PRI's dominance came to an end. We considered the two leading German newspapers, the Süddeutsche Zeitung and the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, apart from the alternative tageszeitung and the weekly Der Spiegel. The study is founded on 2569 articles, from which 458 were included in the quantitative content analysis using a stratified sample. Besides, qualitative interviews with German correspondents complemented the findings. At first glance, the foreign reporting about Mexico seems balanced. Unlike other foreign reporting analyses, its coverage does not concentrate solely on political issues (33%). A considerable amount of economic (15.5%) and cultural (23%) topics leads to a balanced image (60%), even though the reporting was tailored to a German domestic audience. Finally, observing the reporting development, one notices an increase of 33 pp of the coverage on 'crime & delinquency' – a negative impact of Calderon's war on drugs. At the same time, political coverage decreased by 21.5pp. The paper analyses the Mexican image in Germany for the first time and contributes to the update of a vast literature on foreign reporting.
