Conventional tillage and crop establishment methods for the rice–wheat (RW) system are input intensive (water, labour and energy). About 24.5million tonnes of rice residues are burnt every year on farms in north-western India before sowing of wheat, causing air pollution and soil health degradation. Therefore, alternative tillage, crop establishment and residue management practices are needed for long-term sustainability of the RW system. A 4-year field study evaluated four tillage and crop establishment methods in rice (in main plots) and three tillage and rice residue management methods in wheat (in subplots) for their effects on yield, soil fertility, and profitability of the RW system. Average rice yields were similar under conventional puddled transplanted rice (PTR) and conventional till dry seeder rice (CTDSR). Both of these treatments produced significantly greater yields (10–16%) compared with zero till DSR (ZTDSR) and ZT machine transplanted rice in non-puddled soil, respectively, regardless of tillage and straw management methods in the previous wheat crop. Wheat yields in ZT wheat (ZTW) with 100% surface retention of rice residue (+R) were significantly greater than conventional till without residue retention after 2years of experimentation, and accompanied by significant increases in macro-nutrient (potassium) availability in soil. The ZTW−R (no residue) treatment produced 15% lower wheat yield than ZTW+R. System yield was highest in CTDSR-ZTW+R, which was 5% higher than the conventional practice PTR-CTW−R, resulting in Rs 17000ha−1 greater net returns.

Intensive tillage, removal or burning of crop residues, limited organic manure use, declining irrigation water resources and scarcity of labour are the major causes of soil degradation and unsustainability of rice (Oryza sativa L.)–wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) system (RWS) in South Asia.Resource conservation technologies (RCTs) such as zero tillage (ZT), dry direct seeded rice (DSR) and crop residues retained as mulch have shown promise to increase the productivity and profitability of RWS in South Asia. Effects of RCTs on soil biological parameters are unclear and contradictory. We evaluated the effects of conservation agriculture practices on changes in soil biochemical properties at different growth stages of wheat grown as the fifth crop in RWS. Twelve treatment combinations of tillage, crop establishment and crop residue management included four main plot treatments in rice: (1) conventional tillage (CT)-DSR,(2) ZT-DSR, (3) DTR, ZT machine transplanted rice and (4) PTR, conventional puddled transplanted rice. The three subplot treatments were: (i) CTW-R, CT wheat with both rice and wheat residues removed, (ii) ZTW-R, ZT wheat with residues of both the crops removed and (iii) ZTW+R, ZT wheat with rice residue retained as surface mulch in subsequent wheat. Irrespective of rice establishment methods, mean wheat grain yield under ZTW+R was 6% and 10% greater than CTW-R and ZTW-R respectively. Soil enzyme activities increased (5–18%) under ZTW+R compared with ZTW-R and CTW-R at different growth stages of wheat. The residual effect of rice establishment methods was significant on soil enzyme activities during wheat cropping, which were highest under ZT-DSR followed by CT-DSR, DTR and PTR. Soil organic carbon content in the 0–7.5cm layer was significantly higher (7–9%) under the ZTW+R treatment compared with all the other treatments. Principal component analysis (PCA) identified three enzyme activities (dehydrogenase, fluorescein diacetate and phosphatase), and soil organic carbon content as the most sensitive indicators for assessing soil quality for RWS based on conservation agriculture. The PCA discriminated rice establishment systems with rice residue as surface mulch from rice establishment systems without rice residue and the maximum tillering stage from the other stages of wheat. The present study provided reliable biochemical indicators to monitor soil biological quality changes in response to conservation agriculture practices in RWS.

In this paper we investigate the linear stability and properties of the planar travelling non–adiabatic combustion front for the cases of zero and non–zero ambient temperature. The speed of the front is estimated numerically using the shooting and relaxation methods. It is shown that for given parameter values the solution either does not exist or there are two solutions with different values of the front speed, which are referred to as ‘fast’ and ‘slow’. The Evans function approach extended by the compound–matrix method is employed to numerically solve the linear–stability problem for the travelling–wave solution. We demonstrate that the ‘slow’ branch of the solutions is unstable, whereas the ‘fast’ branch can be stable or exhibits Hopf or Bogdanov–Takens instability, depending on the parameter values.

The Stommel equations describing the behaviour of a coastal lagoon, in the absence of freshwater input, are generalized to include ocean exchange processes that are independent of the density difference between the waters of the lagoon and ocean. The resultant model clearly demonstrates the tendency of the system to adopt a state in which the lagoonal waters have a density that is only slightly greater than that of the ocean. In this quasi–neutral inverse (QNI) state, there is only very slow exchange between the ocean and lagoonal waters so that the lagoon is environmentally fragile. The model indicates that the lagoon can readily jump to this QNI state following only minor changes to its physical parameters.

Abstract:  A spontaneously derived fertile plant was recovered from a petaloid cytoplasmic male-sterile (CMS) carrot inbred line. Genetic analysis indicated a single nuclear gene was responsible for the restoration to fertility. Within a family segregating for the nuclear restorer in combination with the sterility-inducing cytoplasm, fertile plants were recovered that could not restore fertility when crossed to sterile genotypes. Genetic analysis indicated cytoplasmic reversion for fertility, and Southern analysis, comparing mtDNA organization of the fertile revertant and its CMS progenitor, identified mitochondrial genome rearrangements. Hybridization of cosmids representing a 108-kb subgenomic circle of the sterile line to DNA of a fertile maintainer and fertile revertant lines indicated a similar mtDNA organization for these genotypes that was distinct from that of the sterile line. Six restriction fragments totalling 43.2 kb were common to the fertile maintainer and revertant and absent in the sterile; other restriction fragments totalling 38.2 kb were present only for the sterile line. Unique fragments of low stoichiometry, two for the fertile maintainer and three for the revertant, distinguished these lines. The reversion to fertility in the sterile line could have resulted from the amplification of a mitochondrial submolar genome highly homologous to that found in the fertile maintainer line.

The traditional combustion problems of calculating flame speeds for a premixed gaseous fuel and for a premixed solid fuel are revisited using a simpler (than previously) non–dimensional temperature. It turns out to be possible to carry out asymptotic calculations for flame speed and the agreement with corresponding numerical calculations is remarkably good. In each case the uniqueness of the speed is considered using phase plane methods, with a little effort to determine the nature of the ‘cold’ critical point.Consideration of the stability of the travelling combustion wave fronts suggests a period doubling route to chaos for the premixed solid fuel (as the exothermicity is decreased) and corresponds with previous work using different non–dimensional temperature and parameters.

A numerical method is used to show that heat loss increases can lead to a period–doubling route to the cessation of propagation of solid fuel combustion. Oscillatory combustion waves are found in certain regions of the parameter space. The behaviour of these oscillatory waves becomes more complex as the heat loss is increased until extinction of the combustion reaction occurs. Large excursions in temperature, above the adiabatic temperature, are possible in the non–adiabatic case close to this extinction point.

The uptake of?-aminobutyric acid (GABA) was measured in rat cerebral cortical synaptosomes and rat kidney brush-border membrane vesicles (BBMV). Three GABA uptake systems (Km = 1.3, 50 and 3246µM respectively) were present in synaptosomes, but only two uptake systems (Km = 11 and 1203µM respectively) were detectable in BBMV. The uptake systems in the two types of tissue preparations were similar in that every system was inhibited byp-hydroxymercuribenzoate and by the action of neuraminidase, thereby indicating that, irrespective of the tissue, both sulfhydryl and sialyl groups were necessary components of all the GABA uptake systems. In contrast, differences were observed between synaptosomal and BBMV uptake systems with respect to their sensitivity to inhibition by GABA structural analogs. While the synaptosomal GABA uptake systems were strongly inhibited by nipecotic acid, diaminobutyric acid,ß-alanine and 4,5,6,7-tetrahydroisoxazolo[4,5-c]pyridin-3-ol (THPO), none of these compounds significantly inhibited the BBMV uptake systems. It is therefore concluded that the GABA uptake systems in brain and kidney tissues are quite different entities. While the role of GABA transport in the inactivation of the neurotransmitter function of GABA is well documented, the role of the kidney GABA uptake system is unclear, and the possibility exists that the latter systems are present in kidney tissues primarily to transport compounds other than GABA. The present study does however highlight a difference in drug susceptibility of the brain and kidney uptake systems, a phenomenon which may have some therapeutic relevance with respect to the use of GABA analogs as anticonvulsant agents.

Summary A method is described for the determination of mercaptans by alkalimetric titration of trithiocarbonic acids formed through their reaction with carbon disulphide in tert.-butanol. The method has been applied to the analysis, on the same sample solution, of mixtures of mercaptans containing titrable hydrogen and those containing nontitrable hydrogen, mercaptans and alkali mercaptides, and mercaptans and mercaptopyrimidines.

Brush-border membrane vesicles (BBMV) from rat kidney cortex possessed two uptake systems for γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a high affinity system (Km=10.9 μM) and a low affinity system (Km=1203 μM). Both uptake systems were inhibited by p-hydroxymercuribenzoic acid and ouabain, and by the action of neuraminidase, whereas the GABA analogs nipecotic acid, β-alanine, 2,4-diaminobutyric acid and 4,5,6,7-tetrahydroisoxazolo-[4,5c]-pyridin-3-ol had no effect on the GABA uptake activity. The BBMW uptake systems were clearly different from the GABA transport systems present in brain tissue.
