Uganda experienced 2 COVID-19 waves that challenged health professional education. All health professions training institutions (HPTIs) in Uganda closed in March 2020. Cognizant of the threat to quality education and the frontline workforce, the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) and Seed Global Health partnered to examine the risks and benefits of HPTI reopening through the Safe Schools Initiative (SSI). This article described the processes to unify stakeholders in health professions education and the outcomes from these discussions during the COVID-19 pandemic in Uganda.During the first COVID-19 wave, the SSI conducted consultative meetings with key stakeholders. The SSI developed guidelines around student welfare and issued standard operating procedures (SOPs) for HPTI reopening. The NCHE recommended in-person learning for final-year students and online learning for junior years, resulting in HPTIs being the first academic institutions to reopen in the country. During the second COVID-19 wave, schools closed again. The SSI utilized recently published literature and quantitative data to inform decision making in addition to expert consensus. The NCHE recommended immediate phased reopening for students in clinical years, blended learning for nonclinical years, and prioritizing health professions education in future lockdowns. Consequently, HPTIs reopened within a month of closure. The SSI demonstrated that national advocacy for health professions education can be effective when engaging stakeholders to build consensus around difficult decisions.Key lessons learned from the SSI include the following: (1) collaborating across sectors in health professions education can amplify change, (2) occupational health guidelines must include health professions students, (3) investing in online education and simulation has value in outbreak-prone areas, and (4) systemic inequities in health professions education will require persistence and advocacy to correct. Future pandemic preparedness must prioritize HPTIs to ensure quality education and continuity of a frontline workforce.

The ability to characterize the modern person living with SCD in the US has been limited by the lack of a well-curated longitudinal registry. The Globin Research Network for Data and Discovery ( GRNDaD)registry aims to overcome this challenge by collecting data from the now 53 IRB-approved centers across the US in collaboration with the National Alliance of Sickle Cell Centers (NASCC) and the HRSA-funded Sickle Cell Disease Treatment Demonstration Project Grant. Here, we describe the use of disease-modifying therapy in (actively consented) adults and children with Hgb SS/ SB 0thalassemia (SCA) from 37 sites.

Many claims about the effects of treatments, though well intentioned, are wrong. Indeed, they are sometimes deliberately misleading to serve interests other than the well-being of patients and the public. People need to know how to spot unreliable treatment claims so that they can protect themselves and others from harm. The ability to assess the trustworthiness of treatment claims is often lacking. Acquiring this ability depends on being familiar with, and correctly applying, some key concepts, for example, that’ association is not the same as causation.’ The Informed Health Choices (IHC) Project has identified 36 such concepts and shown that people can be taught to use them in decision making. A randomised trial in Uganda, for example, showed that primary school children with poor reading skills could be taught to apply 12 of the IHC Key Concepts. The list of IHC Key Concepts has proven to be effective in providing a framework for developing and evaluating IHC resources to help children to think critically about treatment claims. The list also provides a framework for retrieving, coding and organising other teaching and learning materials for learners of any age. It should help teachers, researchers, clinicians, and patients to structure critical thinking about the trustworthiness of claims about treatment effects.

Claims about what improves or harms our health are ubiquitous. People need to be able to assess the reliability of these claims. We aimed to evaluate an intervention designed to teach primary school children to assess claims about the effects of treatments (ie, any action intended to maintain or improve health).

As part of the Informed Health Choices project, we developed a podcast called The Health Choices Programme to help improve the ability of people to assess claims about the benefits and harms of treatments. We aimed to evaluate the effects of the podcast on the ability of parents of primary school children in Uganda to assess claims about the effects of treatments.
