26 March 2016 marked 60 years since the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research was founded in 1956 and within which the Laboratory of Neutron Physics was established. Already four years later, in 1960, the world's first pulsed fast reactor (known by its Russian acronym as IBR) operating in the periodic mode was put into operation, followed in 1984 by IBR-2. The research achievements over the last decade are summarized, the state-of-the-art laboratory hardware is discussed, and the prospects for the future are reviewed.

The experiment of determination of the 64Zn(n, α)61Nireaction cross section in the 5.0 - 6.75 MeV neutron energy range was performed at the 4.5 MV Van de Graaff accelerator at the Institute of Heavy Ion Physics, Peking University, Beijing. A double section ionization chamber with grids was used for direct registration of the reaction products. The cross sections and angular distributions were extracted from the experimental data. The obtained values were compared with the results of other authors and theoretical estimations. The analysis of the experimental data and model calculations were carried out.

The reported neutron spectrometry method is based on primary γ-transition energy shifts. It has been demonstrated in measurements of the partial radiative capture cross section of the 58Ni(n,γ)59Ni and 48Ti(n,γ1)49Ti reactions. The reaction 7Li(p,n) is used to produce resonance neutrons by means of the proton beam of a Van de Graaff accelerator. A compact geometry allows one to improve the luminosity and to employ a rather wide neutron spectrum of up to ~100 keV. Both partial radiative parameters of some neutron resonances and partial cross sections for population of the low-lying states of the product nuclei are obtained.

We have measured the14N(n, p)14C reaction cross section at 24.5, 53.5 and 144 keV to be 2.04±0.16 mbarns, 2.08±0.23 mbarns and 2.07±0.27 mbarns, respectively. The measured values indicate that this reaction could have a large influence on the process of element formation in the Universe.

The14N(n,p)14C reaction cross section has been measured for thermal neutrons, making use of the neutron beam of the IBR-30 pulsed booster of the JINR, Dubna. Thermal neutrons were identified by a time-offlight method. Solid adenin targets were utilized. An ionization chamber was used for detecting the charged particles. The cross section was found to besnpth=(1.83±0.07)b.
