Bis-(N-3-Bromopropylsalicylaldiminato)nicke(II) reacts with sodium iodide in acetone to produce the corresponding iodo derivative. Under indentical conditions, bis-(N-2-bromoethylsalicylaldiminato)nickel(II) rearranges to form a nickel iodide complex of an imine ether. This is a new example of the template reaction.

Schottky-barrier field-effect transistors have been realised in silicon epitaxial films on high-resistivity silicon substrates. The 1 μm wide gates are produced by projection-masking techniques. The maximum transconductances observed are 42 mA/V per mm gate length; the maximum frequency of oscillation fmax was 8 GHz.

The study considers 171 patients that have undergone an operation for breast cancer at the Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori from May 1994 to March 1995. Benefits regarding early mobilization and dinner on the day of surgery have been evaluated. Mean age is 50 (from 20 years old to 80): 107 patients have undergone quadrantectomy and Iymphoadenectomy, 64 Patey mastectomy. Of the patients that had conservative surgery 48 got out of bed after.Early mobilization (getting up on the day of surgery) reduced the need of pain medication by 20%. This happened in both groups of patients considered. Eating (light dinner) on the evening of surgery eliminated completely cases of fainting.

Nineteen carriers of Salmonella typhi were studied; five had gallstones, and the others were documented biliary-tract carriers of S. typhi. One patient had already undergone cholecystectomy. A dose of ampicillin (1 g) was administered iv every 8 hr for 15 days. In all cases, cultures of stool became negative during treatment and remained so throughout the 16- to 24-month period of follow-up. S. Typhi was absent from the bile, the wall of the gallbladder, and the calculi of one patient who later underwent cholecystectomy. In a second part of this study, a single dose of ampicillin (1 g) was given either orally or iv before cholecystectomy to two groups of four patients each. Levels of ampicillin in serum, bile, gallbladder wall, and gallstones were found to be higher after iv administration than after oral administration.
