This study aimed to evaluate the contribution of oral and maxillofacial pathology laboratories (OMPLs) in Brazilian public universities to the diagnosis of lip, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). A cross-sectional study was performed using biopsy records from a consortium of sixteen public OMPLs from all regions of Brazil (North, Northeast, Central-West, Southeast, and South). Clinical and demographic data of patients diagnosed with lip, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal SCC between 2010 and 2019 were collected from the patients' histopathological records. Of the 120,010 oral and maxillofacial biopsies (2010-2019), 6.9% (8,321 cases) were diagnosed as lip (0.8%, 951 cases), oral cavity (4.9%, 5,971 cases), and oropharyngeal (1.2%, 1,399 cases) SCCs. Most cases were from Brazil's Southeast (64.5%), where six of the OMPLs analyzed are located. The predominant profile of patients with lip and oral cavity SCC was Caucasian men, with a mean age over 60 years, low schooling level, and a previous history of heavy tobacco consumption. In the oropharyngeal group, the majority were non-Caucasian men, with a mean age under 60 years, had a low education level, and were former/current tobacco and alcohol users. According to data from the Brazilian National Cancer Institute, approximately 9.9% of the total lip, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal SCCs reported over the last decade in Brazil may have been diagnosed at the OMPLs included in the current study. Therefore, this data confirms the contribution of public OMPLs with respect to the important diagnostic support they provide to the oral healthcare services extended by the Brazilian Public Health System. To analyze the clinical and demographic characteristics of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) diagnosed in a single Oral Pathology laboratory. All cases diagnosed as OSCC in the Oral Pathology laboratory, Rio de Janeiro State University, from 2013 to 2020 were selected. Information were retrieved from the laboratory forms and data was descriptively and comparatively analyzed. Mean age was 62,7 years and males represented 66,2% of the sample (total 607 cases). Mean time of complaint was 10,5 months and the two most affected locations were the border of the tongue (31,7%) and the floor of the mouth/ventral tongue (19,8%). Leukoerithroplakic and ulcerated areas were present in, respectively, 28,7% and 61,3% of the cases. Mean age of females was higher than males (p<0,001) and mean size of the tumors was higher in males (p=0,039). Ulcerated areas were associated with a lower time of complaint (p=0,016) and larger size of the tumors (p=0,001). Ulcerated areas were more common in gingival/alveolar mucosal and soft palate tumors (p=0,030). A 65-year-old female presented at the stomatology clinic with a two-year history of a "lump in her tongue." Upon physical examination, a sessile normochromic nodule was observed on the left lateral border of the tongue. The nodule had a flat surface and smooth consistency, measuring approximately 3mm. The initial clinical diagnosis considered fibrous hyperplasia and lipoma. To establish a definitive diagnosis, an excisional biopsy was conducted, and histological analysis of the hematoxylin and eosin (HE) stained slides revealed an unencapsulated, well-circumscribed proliferation of blood vessels of various calibers and sizes, along with smooth muscle cells within the connective tissue. Immunohistochemical analysis demonstrated that neoplastic cells expressed AML and HHF35, while testing negative for S100 expression. Ki-67 expression was noted in less than 1% of the tumor cells. A 54-year-old female was referred for evaluation of a swelling in the anterior maxilla lasting 4 months, producing paresthesia in the upper anterior teeth. Clinical examination revealed a 30 x 30 mm swelling covered by normal oral mucosa in the anterior maxilla. Panoramic radiograph and cone beam computed tomography revealed a relatively well-defined predominantly radiopaque lesion producing cortical bone destruction and root resorption on the adjacent teeth. Clinical diagnosis was cementoblastoma and an incisional biopsy was performed. Histological analysis of the HE-stained slides revealed a proliferation of dysplastic pleomorphic cells in a eosinophilic background along with chondroblastic areas, rendering a diagnosis of chondroblastic osteosarcoma. Patient was referred for a head and neck surgery service and was managed through a wide surgical resection with free surgical margins. Histological analysis of the surgical specimen confirmed chondroblastic osteosarcoma and the patient remains in follow-up for 9 months with no signs of local recurrence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Dentigerous cysts are rarely found in children during the first decade of life. A 2-year-old male was referred to the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Service due to a complaint of facial swelling persisting for 12 months. His medical and family history indicated hyperactivity disorder and continuous use of phenobarbital. During the oral examination, a swelling was observed in the mandibular left posterior region, which obscured the buccal sulcus. An orthopantomogram revealed a well-circumscribed radiolucency with a developing molar tooth inside the lesion, measuring 5.0 cm. The clinical diagnosis was developmental odontogenic cyst. Enucleation was performed under general anesthesia. Histological analysis of the stained slides revealed a cystic lumen lined by epithelium. The final diagnosis was consistent with a dentigerous cyst. The patient has been under follow-up for 21 months and is currently asymptomatic, with no clinical evidence of recurrence. A 19-year-old female presented at the stomatology clinic with a chief complaint of a "swelling in the upper lip." Physical examination unveiled a submucosal fibrous, mobile, nodular lesion measuring 3.5 cm within the upper lip. Her medical history included a mental illness and a history of epileptic seizures. The clinical diagnosis initially suggested pleomorphic adenoma, leading to the performance of an excisional biopsy under general anesthesia. Histological analysis of the Hematoxylin and Eosin (HE) stained slides revealed a proliferation of large polygonal cells with abundant eosinophilic granular cytoplasm and hyperchromatic pleomorphic nuclei with prominent nucleoli within the connective tissue. Immunoreactions were conducted to rule out other mesenchymal tumors, and the findings showed positivity to S-100, alpha-inhibin, SOX-10, along with ki-67 expression in 7% of the tumor cells. These findings supported the diagnosis of atypical granular cell tumor. The patient was subsequently referred to a plastic surgeon and is currently under clinical follow-up. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A one-year-old girl was brought to the stomatology clinic with a complaint of a lesion in the maxilla. Upon head and neck examination, red scaly lesions were observed on the head and auricular region, indicative of seborrheic dermatitis. Intraoral examination revealed an exophytic tumoral lesion with a granular surface, measuring approximately 3 cm, located in the upper right alveolar ridge, extending from tooth 53 to 55. This lesion had been present for one year. Radiographs displayed an ill-defined radiolucent image in the affected area. Based on the clinical findings, a provisional diagnosis of Langerhans cell histiocytosis was made, and an incisional biopsy was performed. Histological examination of the hematoxylin and eosin (HE) stained slides revealed a proliferation of neoplastic histiocytes, consistent with Langerhans cells, along with numerous eosinophils. Immunohistochemical analysis showed that the neoplastic cells were positive for S100 and CD1a expression, confirming the diagnosis of Langerhans cell histiocytosis. A 58-year-old female sought care at the stomatology clinic with a complaint of feeling "a lump in my mouth caused by my denture." Upon physical examination, a sessile, lobulated, normochromic, fibrous lesion was identified in the right posterior region of the floor of the mouth and the retromolar area, which had been present for the past 3 months. The patient reported experiencing trauma due to her lower removable partial prosthesis and was a smoker. Based on the clinical presentation, the initial diagnosis was suspected to be squamous cell carcinoma. Subsequently, an incisional biopsy was performed. However, histological analysis of the H&E stained slides revealed a mixed inflammatory infiltrate, predominantly composed of macrophages and eosinophils within a fibrous connective tissue stroma. An excisional biopsy was subsequently conducted, confirming the diagnosis of traumatic granuloma with tissue eosinophilia. Gastric volvulus is a rare clinical entity which occurs due to the rotation of the stomach and can have life-threatening complications. This condition can have an acute or chronic presentation and its symptoms will vary according to the degree of obstruction and rapidity of onset. We report a case of a 84-year-old male with history of frequent periods of constipation and lack of appetite who presented to the emergency room with left-sided abdominal pain and distension and persistent nausea, without the ability to vomit. Abdominal radiograph, computed tomography scan of the abdomen, contrast-enhanced examination and upper endoscopy were consistent with a gastric volvulus secondary to diaphragmatic eventration. The patient's symptoms resolved after nasogastric tube placement and fluid resuscitation. However, he was proposed to a laparoscopic anterior gastropexy to prevent symptom recurrence. He remains asymptomatic after 3 years of follow-up. The diagnosis of gastric volvulus is based mainly on clinical presentation and abdominal imaging. The main principles of surgical intervention include stomach decompression with volvulus reduction, followed by gastropexy and correction of any predisposing intra-abdominal factors. Definitive treatment of both acute and chronic gastric volvulus includes a surgical approach. The present research intends to analyse the impact of social support on perceived parenting styles. A socio-demographic questionnaire was used to collect data, the EMBU-P scale and the Satisfaction with Social Support Scale (ESSS). The participants consisted of 1096 individuals, female (N=855) and male (N=241), aged between 20 and 80 years (M=41.65). Parents’ gender and age are two of the variables that will also be studied in terms of their influence on the parenting styles. The results showed that social support (in relation to friendships, family, intimacy and social activities) of the parents correlates positively with their parenting styles, in all dimensions assessed by the EMBU-P scale (emotional support, rejection and control attempt). Thus, it was verified that social support has impact on parenting styles. Additionally, this study revealed differences among mothers and fathers as well as their ages, in terms of their perception of emotional support, rejection and control attempt, which shows that the gender and the age of the parents are related with their parenting styles. The results allow drawing conclusions that can outline possible guidelines for interventions aimed at the strengthening of the support networks and targeting at a better adaptation of the parenting styles present in families. • Dieulafoy lesion of the gallbladder is a very rare cause of hemobilia. • Hemobilia should be considered as a cause of acute pancreatitis. • Intraoperative cholangiogram is effective in flushing small biliary clots. Dieulafoy lesion of the gallbladder is very rare. It can cause hemobilia and, consequently, acute pancreatitis. After extensive research, the authors found six reported cases of this entity, none of them presenting as acute pancreatitis. A 78-year-old woman presented to the emergency department a right upper-quadrant pain and nausea. Abdominal ultrasound showed a gallbladder full of a heterogenic content with no signs of lithiasis or acute cholecystitis. Blood lipase was significantly elevated. She was admitted for acute pancreatitis. During hospitalization she developed jaundice and hematemesis requiring blood transfusion. The upper gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy with side-view duodenoscopy showed blood through the papilla of Vater. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging confirmed the content of the gallbladder with no changes in the biliary tree. A laparoscopic cholecystectomy with intraoperative cholangiogram was performed. Histology revealed a Dieulafoy lesion. The patient was discharged three days after surgery and had no subsequent episodes. Hemobilia should be considered as a cause of upper GI bleeding and acute pancreatitis, especially if both are concurrent. Treatment is directed to the cause, with bleeding control and restoration of bile flow, which can be accomplished by a single minimally invasive surgery. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Highlights • Anorectal malignant melanoma, is a rare and aggressive form of melanoma. • Very different from its cutaneous counterpart. • There is no optimal treatment. Abstract Introduction Anorectal malignant melanoma (AMM), is a rare and aggressive form of melanoma. Accounts for <2% of melanomas, and <2% of anal tumors. It is more frequent at the 6th–7th decade, mostly in women. Surgery is the mainstay of treatment, but the extent is controversial. Case presentation 82-year-old male, presented with rectal mass in the Emergency Room (ER). After local excision, pathology observed that the mass corresponded to AMM. Despite being stage I (Local disease), a year later it presented with local recurrence and distant metastasis. The patient died 32 months after diagnosis. Conclusions There is no optimal treatment, due to the lack of prospective studies. Wide local excision (WLE) has faster recovery, less post-operatory complications and similar survival rate compared to abdominal perineal resection (APR). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract This work evaluates the degradation of benzoic acid, a tracer from biomass burning, by different oxidation agents (Fe (III); H 2 O 2 ; sunlight; and combinations of the previous ones) in model solutions and in real atmospheric waters. The extent of reactions was assessed by Ultraviolet–Visible and molecular fluorescence spectroscopies. The oxidation of benzoic acid occurred with the chemical oxidants Fe (III), H 2 O 2 , Fe (III) and H 2 O 2 simultaneously in the presence of sunlight, and with Fe (III) and H 2 O 2 simultaneously in the absence of light. The decrease of the pH value from neutral to acid for atmospheric waters generally increased the extent of oxidation. Sunlight was an important oxidation agent, and its combination with chemical oxidants increased the oxidation rate of benzoic acid, possibly due to the photogeneration of hydroxyl radicals. The results also suggested the occurrence of direct and indirect photolysis of benzoic acid in atmospheric waters. Moreover, the oxidation of benzoic acid produced new and more complex chromophoric compounds, which were then degraded. In addition, the nocturnal period is not sufficient for the full degradation of benzoic acid and of the intermediates formed by Fenton-like oxidation. The diurnal period may be enough for their full degradation through photo-Fenton-like oxidation, but this depends on the composition of the atmospheric waters, namely of the chromophoric content. Thus, this study highlights that benzoic acid from biomass burning, and its derivatives, may persist in atmospheric waters for periods of longer than one day, becoming available for other reactions, and may also affect the terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems through the wet depositions. This study investigates the potential of MPs as carriers of pollutants as they can strengthen bioaccumulation of toxic metals on marine organisms. For the first time, the interaction of the metal palladium (Pd) with the widespread MPs, both with increasing concentrations in water environments from anthropogenic sources, was tested. Mytilus galloprovincialis , an important seafood product, was exposed to Pd (24 h) in two ways: water-dissolved and MPs-adsorbed, with depuration followed for 144 h. Quantification of Pd in tissues shown an accumulation 2–3 times higher (59 % of initial Pd) for mussels exposed to MPs-adsorbed Pd and higher in digestive gland than when exposed to water-dissolved Pd (25 %; higher in gills). Additionally, it was demonstrated that Pd induced oxidative stress and altered the feeding behavior of mussels. Metal(oid)s concentrations have been quantified in plastic pieces collected from four beaches located in the Mediterranean coast of Spain with different characteristics (i.e. anthropogenic pressure, zone). Metal(oid)s content was also related to selected plastic criteria (i.e. color, degradation status, polymer). The selected elements were quantified with mean concentrations in the sampled plastics with the following order: Fe > Mg > Zn > Mn > Pb > Sr > As > Cu > Cr > Ni > Cd > Co. Moreover, black, brown, PUR, PS, and coastal line plastics concentrated the higher metal(oid)s levels. Local of sampling (influence of mining exploitation) and severe degradation were key factors for uptake of metal(oid)s from water by plastics as modification of surfaces strengths their adsorption capacity. Determined high levels of Fe, Pb and Zn in plastics reflected the pollution degree of the marine areas. Therefore, this study is a contribution for the potential use of plastics as pollution monitors. Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) continues to be the viral disease posing the greatest economic threat to agriculture. An unusually fast replication rate, extreme transmissibility, broad species tropism and antigenic diversity have made its etiologic agent, FMD virus, a difficult pathogen to defeat. Over the last 70 years, use of an inactivated virus vaccine has played a key role in disease control and eradication was possible in certain regions of the world. However, a rapidly changing environment, increased trade, population growth, international travel and migration, contribute to disease resurgence, challenging the capabilities of any available vaccine. Here we review the current knowledge on FMD vaccines and provide an outlook of novel technologies as possible improved alternatives for disease control and eradication. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

During the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, facemasks became mandatory, with a great preference for disposable ones. However, the benefits of face masks for health safety are counteracted by the environmental burden related to their improper disposal. An unprecedented influx of disposable face masks entering the environment has been reported in the last two years of the pandemic, along with their implications in natural environments in terms of their biodegradability, released contaminants and ecotoxicological effects. This critical review addresses several aspects of the current literature regarding the (bio)degradation and (eco)toxicity of face masks related contaminants, identifying uncertainties and research needs that should be addressed in future studies. While it is indisputable that face mask contamination contributes to the already alarming plastic pollution, we are still far from determining its real environmental and ecotoxicological contribution to the issue. The paucity of studies on biodegradation and ecotoxicity of face masks and related contaminants, and the uncertainties and uncontrolled variables involved during experimental procedures, are compromising eventual comparison with conventional plastic debris. Studies on the abundance and composition of face mask-released contaminants (microplastics/fibres/ chemical compounds) under pre- and post-pandemic conditions should, therefore, be encouraged, along with (bio)degradation and ecotoxicity tests considering environmentally relevant settings. To achieve this, methodological strategies should be developed to overcome technical difficulties to quantify and characterise the smallest MPs and fibres, adsorbents, and leachates to increase the environmental relevancy of the experimental conditions. The huge evolution of nanotechnology and the commercialization of nanomaterials (NMs) positively contributed for innovation in several industrial sectors. Facing this rapid development and the emergence of NMs in the market, the release of this nanometric sized materials in the environment and the possible impact on different ecosystem components attracted the attention of researchers in the last few years. In our study we aimed to assess the impact of titanium silicon oxide nanomaterial (nano-TiSiO 4 ) on soil biota to estimate a risk limit for this material. In the present research a battery of standardized ecotoxicological assays aimed at evaluating a wide range of endpoints (avoidance and reproduction of earthworms and collembolans, emergence/growth of four selected terrestrial plants) were carried out, using OECD artificial soil as test substrate spiked with aqueous suspension of different concentrations of nano-TiSiO 4 . The results showed a maximum avoidance percentage of 40% for earthworms ( Esenia andrei ) at the highest concentration tested (1000 mg kg −1 soil dw of nano-TiSiO 4 ). No significant effect on the reproductive function of both invertebrate species was recorded. Nevertheless, significant phytotoxic data was registered at least for the growth of dicotyledonous plant species ( Lactuca sativa and Lycopersicon lycopersicum ) with EC 20 values ranging between 236 and 414 mg kg −1 soil dw of nano-TiSiO 4 for L. sativa dry mass and fresh mass, respectively. Further, the characterization of nano-TiSiO 4 in suspensions used to spike the soil, performed by Dynamic Light Scattering, showed the formation of aggregates with important average size diameter, thus demonstrating that the toxic effects observed were likely not size dependent. A deterministic PNEC (predicted no effect concentration) for this NM of 10.02 mg kg −1 soil dw of nano-TiSiO 4 , is suggested, while no more ecotoxicological information exists. Context: Mindfulness meditation has been shown to effectively mitigate the negative effects of stress among nursing professionals, but in countries like Brazil, these practices are relatively unexplored.Objective: To evaluate the effects of a Stress Reduction Program (SRP) including mindfulness and loving kindness meditation among nursing professionals working in a Brazilian hospital setting.Design: Pilot study with a mixed model using quantitative and qualitative methods was used to evaluate a group of participants. The quantitative data were analyzed at three different time points: pre-intervention, post-intervention, and follow-up. The qualitative data were analyzed at post-intervention.Setting: Hospital São Paulo (Brazil).Participants: Sample 13 nursing professionals, including nurses, technicians, and nursing assistants working in a hospital.Intervention: Participants underwent mindfulness and loving kindness meditation during a period of six weeks.Instruments: Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS), Self-Compassion Scale (SCS), WHOQOL-BREF quality of life assessment, and Work Stress Scale (WSS). Qualitative data were collected via a group interview following six weeks participation in the SRP.Results: The quantitative analyses revealed a significant reduction (P < .05) between pre-intervention and post-intervention scores for perceived stress, burnout, depression, and anxiety (trait). These variables showed no significant differences between post-intervention and follow-up scores. The WHOQOL-BREF revealed significant increase (P < .05) just in the physical and psychological domains at post-intervention scores, which remained at the follow-up. Qualitative results showed improvement in the reactivity to inner experience; a more attentive perception of internal and external experiences; greater attention and awareness of actions and attitudes at every moment; and a positive influence of the SRP in nursing activities. Tumours of the minor salivary glands are relatively uncommon, and publications from around the world normally include tumours of both the minor and major salivary glands, making it difficult to assess their prevalence and distribution. Our aim was to evaluate retrospectively the clinicopathological features of a series of tumours of the intraoral minor salivary glands from two universities in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and to compare the data with those from other epidemiological studies. A total of 170 such tumours were diagnosed from 1942 to 2012, and were selected from two university departments of oral pathology. Eighty-nine of the tumours were benign (52%). Pleomorphic adenoma (n=75) and mucoepidermoid carcinoma (n=23) were the most common benign (44%) and malignant tumours (14%), respectively. There were 104 female patients (61%) and both benign and malignant tumours affected more women than men. Significantly more tumours were in the palate (n=95, 56%; p=0.001). We conclude that these tumours had features similar to those from other studies from North and Latin America, but differ from the results presented from Asia. Further studies should be designed to highlight possible geographical and population-specific characteristics of these tumours. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
