Glucocorticoid (GC) hormones have traditionally been interpreted as indicators of stress, but the extent to which they provide information on physiological state remains debated. GCs are metabolic hormones that amongst other functions ensure increasing fuel (i.e. glucose) supply on the face of fluctuating energetic demands, a role often overlooked by ecological studies investigating the consequences of GC variation. Furthermore, because energy budget is limited, in natural contexts where multiple stimuli coexist, the organisms' ability to respond physiologically may be constrained when multiple triggers of metabolic responses overlap in time. Using free-living spotless starling (Sturnus unicolor) chicks, we experimentally tested whether two stimuli of different nature known to trigger a metabolic or GC response, respectively, cause a comparable increase in plasma GCs and glucose. We further tested whether response patterns differed when both stimuli occurred consecutively. We found that both experimental treatments caused increases in GCs and glucose of similar magnitude, suggesting that both variables fluctuate along with variation in energy expenditure, independently of the trigger. Exposure to the two stimuli occurring subsequently did not cause a difference in GC or glucose responses compared with exposure to a single stimulus, suggesting a limited capacity to respond to an additional stimulus during an ongoing acute response. Lastly, we found a positive and significant correlation between plasma GCs and glucose after the experimental treatments. Our results add to the increasing research on the role of energy expenditure on GC variation, by providing experimental evidence on the association between plasma GCs and energy metabolism.

The objective of this study was to assess the results of applying Lean Methodology in the design of a standardized medication storage model in hospitalization departments.

Background: The care transition is the time when more medication errors occur. The aim of this study is to analyze the usefulness of a pharmacotherapeutic report model at hospital discharge to prevent medication errors and to simplify pharmacotherapy during a patient’s transition from the hospital to primary care. Methods: Prospective study including patients diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease who were admitted to a short-stay unit or an emergency room. Relevant variables were extracted from the patients’ clinical history and SPSS software was used to carry out the statistical analysis. Direct costs were also calculated. Results: 79.3% of patients were polymedicated, 15.5% of patients were identified as nonadherent to the treatment, 12.1% were users of alternative therapies, and 10.3% had been prescribed drugs that could be monitored. In 32.8% of the reports, reference was made to the primary care pharmacists with a view to resolve any pharmacotherapeutic discrepancies. A total of 132 discrepancies were identified, the majority being related to medicinal requirements (necessary/unnecessary medication). The major cause of drug-related problems (DRPs) were prescription errors. The drugs that were mainly involved in the onset of DRPs belonged to the R group, and the degree of simplification of the pharmacotherapy was 7.6%. The total cost avoided with the reconciliation was 200€/patient. Conclusion: A continuity program was implemented based on the drafting of a pharmacotherapeutic report, which allowed for detecting discrepancies and updating the patients’ pharmacotherapeutic history, resulting in financial savings after its implementation.

Response to antidepressant (AD) treatment may be a more polygenic trait than previously hypothesized, with many genetic variants interacting in yet unclear ways. In this study we used methods that can automatically learn to detect patterns of statistical regularity from a sparsely distributed signal across hippocampal transcriptome measurements in a large‐scale animal pharmacogenomic study to uncover genomic variations associated with AD. The study used four inbred mouse strains of both sexes, two drug treatments, and a control group (escitalopram, nortriptyline, and saline). Multi‐class and binary classification using Machine Learning (ML) and regularization algorithms using iterative and univariate feature selection methods, including InfoGain, mRMR, ANOVA, and Chi Square, were used to uncover genomic markers associated with AD response. Relevant genes were selected based on Jaccard distance and carried forward for gene‐network analysis. Linear association methods uncovered only one gene associated with drug treatment response. The implementation of ML algorithms, together with feature reduction methods, revealed a set of 204 genes associated with SSRI and 241 genes associated with NRI response. Although only 10% of genes overlapped across the two drugs, network analysis shows that both drugs modulated the CREBpathway, through different molecular mechanisms. Through careful implementation and optimisations, the algorithms detected a weak signal used to predict whether an animal was treated with nortriptyline (77%) or escitalopram (67%) on an independent testing set. The results from this study indicate that the molecular signature of AD treatment may include a much broader range of genomic markers than previously hypothesized, suggesting that response to medication may be as complex as the pathology. The search for biomarkers of antidepressant treatment response could therefore consider a higher number of genetic markers and their interactions. Through predominately different molecular targets and mechanisms of action, the two drugs modulate the same Creb1pathway which plays a key role in neurotrophic responses and in inflammatory processes. © 2016 The Authors. La ecografía se ha convertido en los últimos tiempos en una herramienta indispensable para el médico de familia, tanto si ejerce en atención primaria como en urgencias; y del mismo modo se ha extendido a muchas otras especialidades: medicina interna, cuidados intensivos, neurología, neumología, digestivo, etc., ya que los ultrasonidos han demostrado ser una herramienta segura y tener gran capacidad diagnóstica. Nosotros creemos firmemente que la ecografía realizada a «pie de cama» del paciente, realizada por el médico de familia, puede complementar en gran medida la exploración física y mejorar sobremanera la eficacia del clínico, permitiendo al explorador una visión inmediata a la anatomía y fisiología de determinadas estructuras. Es dentro de este contexto donde cobra especial relevancia el estudio ecográfico de la aorta y de los grandes vasos abdominales, realizado por el propio médico de familia o de urgencias, que vamos a desarrollar a lo largo de este artículo.

THE STUDY OF THE MAXIMAL KICK BALL VELOCITY IN SOCCER IS OF INTEREST DUE TO ITS RELEVANCE IN THE SCORE ACHIEVED IN A SOCCER MATCH. THIS REVIEW FOCUSES ON STUDIES THAT HAVE EXPLORED THE ASSOCIATION BETWEEN STRENGTH AND BALL VELOCITY, AND THE EFFECTS OF STRENGTH TRAINING IN THE MAXIMUM KICKING VELOCITY. THE STUDIES REVIEWED SUGGEST THAT THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN STRENGTH AND KICKING VELOCITY IN SOCCER IS INCONSISTENT. IN ADDITION, PLYOMETRIC AND EXPLOSIVE STRENGTH TRAINING CAN BE CARRIED OUT SUCCESSFULLY IN COMBINATION WITH REGULAR SOCCER TRAINING TO IMPROVE THE MAXIMUM KICKING VELOCITY.

La ecografía abdominal continúa siendo la primera exploración a realizar en los pacientes con sospecha de enfermedad pancreática. Pese a los recientes avances tecnológicos en las pruebas de imagen, la ecografía no ha sido desplazada como primer escalón diagnóstico debido a su inocuidad, accesibilidad y bajo coste.

Restoration of facial animation and sensation is highly important for the outcome after facial allotransplantation. The identification of healthy nerves for neurotization is of particular importance for successful nerve regeneration within the allograft. However, because of the severity of the initial injury and resultant scar formation, a lack of healthy nerve stumps in the recipient is a commonly encountered problem. In this study, the authors evaluate the technical feasibility of performing nerve transfers in facial transplantation for both sensory and motor neurotization.

This review article presents a general view of the recent progress in the fast developing area of surface-enhanced Raman scattering spectroscopy as an analytical tool for the detection and identification of molecular species in very small concentrations, with a particular focus on potential applications in the biomedical area. We start with a brief overview of the relevant concepts related to the choice of plasmonic nanostructures for the design of suitable substrates, their implementation into more complex materials that allow generalization of the method and detection of a wide variety of (bio)molecules and the strategies that can be used for both direct and indirect sensing. In relation to indirect sensing, we devote the final section to a description of SERS-encoded particles, which have found wide application in biomedicine (among other fields), since they are expected to face challenges such as multiplexing and high-throughput screening.

Abstract: How colouration provides information about individuals in birds has been a central issue in recent decades. Although much information has been derived, little is known about the adaptive significance of egg colouration in birds. A recent idea suggests that biliverdin- and porphyrin-pigmented eggs may act as a post-mating sexual signal for males to assess female quality. In birds, it is common for males to influence prelaying female condition by courtship feeding. Using Eurasian kestrels, a species that lays protoporphyrin-pigmented eggs, we descriptively assessed the influence of male feeding on egg pigmentation by considering female phenotype, condition, breeding parameters and male body condition. We found that older females and females with greyer tails (an index of individual quality) produce highly pigmented eggs. However, male body condition was the only variable that explained egg colouration when considered together with the female-related variables. Therefore, females that mated with males in better condition laid highly pigmented eggs. With the same species, we also explored the cost of producing protoporphyrin-pigmented eggs using a food-supply experiment before the laying period. Food supplementation did not increase egg pigmentation, but hatching success and egg mass were positively related to egg colouration only in food supplied pairs. We suggest that egg colouration might be costly to produce and probably suggests egg quality. However, this cost cannot be explained by female quality, but by male condition instead. In general, our results do not support the theory that egg colouration is a post-mating sexual signal in species where males determine female condition at the time of laying.

Advances in nanophotonics have shown the potential of colloidal metal particles with sharp tips, such as nanostars, to focalize the plasmonic electromagnetic fields. We describe in this paper the performance of gold nanostars in common surface-enhanced scattering (SES) experiments, including SERS, SERRS, and SEF. The study was carried out for several analytes and demonstrated the potential of nanostars for ultradetection of nonfunctionalized analytes, by simply depositing nanostars on top of analyte thin films previously assembled onto a smooth gold surface.

In this work, we have devised and fabricated a magnetic + optical, bifunctional colloidal system that combines flexible handling and efficient SERS analytical capabilities. This system comprises silica-coated magnetic γ-Fe2O3(maghemite) cores, coated with a dense monolayer of gold nanorods presenting long-term optical stability and a high density of hot spots per area unit. The magnetic functionality allows for the use of a small number of capsules that can be later concentrated under a magnetic field for SERS analysis thereby increasing the detection limits.

This paper focuses on the preparation of siloxane-polyurethane hybrid materials using a sol-gel method. The global aim of the project is to tailor mechanical properties, degradability rate, bioactivity and biocompatibility to design scaffolds for musculoskeletal applications. A series of seven hybrid materials were synthesized with varying the proportion of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), and Polyurethane (PU). The organic part ratios (by weight) employed were (% PDMS:% PU) 30:0, 35:5, 20:10, 15:15, 10:20, 5:25, and 0:30. The organic part was reacted with constant 70 % TEOS to obtain the hybrid materials. A sol-gel process was selected for the synthesis of the hybrids. The characterization of materials was carried out by the fourier-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), x-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) and proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) techniques in order to analyze the structure, microstructure and chemical composition of the hybrid materials. Gelification time depends on the proportion of PU used. When no PU is employed, the gel time is 8 hours but it rises up to 18 days for 30 % of polyurethane. Materials range from opaque to translucent but with a greater fragility for greater amounts of polyurethane. No differences in the bonding of materials could be appreciated.

Though hydroxyapatite has the ability to promote bone growing, devices based on OHAp are mechanically weak and need to be reinforced for load bearing applications or in the manufacturing of scaffolds for bone regeneration. Graphite (Gr) could provide appropriate reinforcement properties to OHAp without being deleterious for the biocompatibility of the system. This paper describes an accelerated synthesis of the OHAp with ultrasonic agitation in the presence of functionalized graphite (GO). The toxicity of the Graphite and the GO-OHAp system is evaluated. GO-OHAp was produced by a wet chemical reaction involving CaCl2 and Na2HPO4. The calcium salt solution was added first and the solution sonicated for 1 hour, before repeating the operation with the phosphate solution. Biocompatibility was tested by using a primary cell culture of HOB (ECCAC). The disappearance of the maximum at 2q = 26.32º corresponding to the d002 plane of graphite and the appearance of the maximum at 2q = 13.2º in the XRD patterns is related with an expansion of the grapheme sheets from 0.34 nm to 0.59 nm and it has been used to assess the graphite oxidation. The OHAP on GO growing has been confirmed by the appearance of a broad peak centred at 2q = 31.5º and a sharpened peak at 2q = 26.0º characteristic of low crystalline apatites. Although the employed graphite can be considered biocompatible, cellular viability is significantly improved by the presence of apatite.
