- Abstract
The Warm Ionized Medium (WIM) hosts most of the ionized gas in the Galaxy and occupies perhaps a quarter of the volume of the Galactic disk. Decoding the spectrum of the Galactic diffuse ionizing field is of fundamental interest. This can be done via direct measurements of ionization fractions of various elements. Based on current physical models for the WIM we predicted that mid-IR fine structure lines of Ne, Ar and S would be within the grasp of the Mid-Infrared Imager-Medium Resolution Spectrometer (MIRI-MRS), an Integral Field Unit (IFU) spectrograph, aboard the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). Motivated thus we analyzed a pair of commissioning data sets and detected [Ne ii] 12.81 μm, [S iii] 18.71 μm and possibly [S iv] 10.51 μm. The inferred emission measure for these detections is about 10 cm−6pc, typical of the WIM. These detections are broadly consistent with expectations of physical models for the WIM. The current detections are limited by uncorrected fringing (and to a lesser extent by baseline variations). In due course, we expect, as with other IFUs, the calibration pipeline to deliver photon-noise-limited spectra. The detections reported here bode well for the study of the WIM. Along most lines-of-sight hour-long MIRI-MRS observations should detect line emission from the WIM. When combined with optical observations by modern IFUs with high spectral resolution on large ground-based telescopes, the ionization fraction and temperature of neon and sulfur can be robustly inferred. Separately, the ionization of helium in the WIM can be probed by NIRspec. Finally, joint JWST and optical IFU studies will open up a new cottage industry of studying the WIM on arcsecond scales.

- Abstract
The detectors in the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) are arsenic-doped silicon impurity band conduction (Si:As IBC) devices and are direct descendants of the Spitzer IRAC long wavelength arrays (channels 3 and 4). With appropriate data processing, they can provide excellent performance. In this paper we discuss the various non-ideal behaviors of these detectors that need to be addressed to realize their potential. We have developed a set of algorithms toward this goal, building on experience with previous similar detector arrays. The MIRI-specific stage 1 pipeline algorithms, of a three stage JWST calibration pipeline, were developed using pre-flight tests on the flight detectors and flight spares and have been refined using flight data. This paper describes these algorithms, which are included in the first stage of the JWST Calibration Pipeline for the MIRI instrument.

- Abstract
Twenty-six years ago a small committee report, building on earlier studies, expounded a compelling and poetic vision for the future of astronomy, calling for an infrared-optimized space telescope with an aperture of at least 4 m. With the support of their governments in the US, Europe, and Canada, 20,000 people realized that vision as the 6.5 m James Webb Space Telescope. A generation of astronomers will celebrate their accomplishments for the life of the mission, potentially as long as 20 yr, and beyond. This report and the scientific discoveries that follow are extended thank-you notes to the 20,000 team members. The telescope is working perfectly, with much better image quality than expected. In this and accompanying papers, we give a brief history, describe the observatory, outline its objectives and current observing program, and discuss the inventions and people who made it possible. We cite detailed reports on the design and the measured performance on orbit.

- Abstract
This paper characterizes the actual science performance of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), as determined from the six month commissioning period. We summarize the performance of the spacecraft, telescope, science instruments, and ground system, with an emphasis on differences from pre-launch expectations. Commissioning has made clear that JWST is fully capable of achieving the discoveries for which it was built. Moreover, almost across the board, the science performance of JWST is better than expected; in most cases, JWST will go deeper faster than expected. The telescope and instrument suite have demonstrated the sensitivity, stability, image quality, and spectral range that are necessary to transform our understanding of the cosmos through observations spanning from near-earth asteroids to the most distant galaxies.

- Abstract
The Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) extends the reach of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) to 28.5 μm. It provides subarcsecond-resolution imaging, high sensitivity coronagraphy, and spectroscopy at resolutions of λ/Δλ∼ 100–3500, with the high-resolution mode employing an integral field unit to provide spatial data cubes. The resulting broad suite of capabilities will enable huge advances in studies over this wavelength range. This overview describes the history of acquiring this capability for JWST. It discusses the basic attributes of the instrument optics, the detector arrays, and the cryocooler that keeps everything at approximately 7 K. It gives a short description of the data pipeline and of the instrument performance demonstrated during JWST commissioning. The bottom line is that the telescope and MIRI are both operating to the standards set by pre-launch predictions, and all of the MIRI capabilities are operating at, or even a bit better than, the level that had been expected. The paper is also designed to act as a roadmap to more detailed papers on different aspects of MIRI.

- Abstract
This article summarizes a workshop held on March, 2014, on the potential of the James Webb Space Telescope(JWST) to revolutionize our knowledge of the physical properties of exoplanets through transit observations. JWST's unique combination of high sensitivity and broad wavelength coverage will enable the accurate measurement of transits with high signal-to-noise ratio (S/N). Most importantly, JWSTspectroscopy will investigate planetary atmospheres to determine atomic and molecular compositions, to probe vertical and horizontal structure, and to follow dynamical evolution, i.e., exoplanet weather. JWSTwill sample a diverse population of planets of varying masses and densities in a wide variety of environments characterized by a range of host star masses and metallicities, orbital semi-major axes, and eccentricities. A broad program of exoplanet science could use a substantial fraction of the overall JWSTmission.

13. A Mid-Infrared Imaging Survey of Embedded Young Stellar Objects in the ? Ophiuchi Cloud Core

- Abstract
Results of a comprehensive, new, ground-based mid-infrared imaging survey of the young stellar population of the r Ophiuchi cloud are presented. Data were acquired at the Palomar 5 m and at the Keck 10 m telescopes with the MIRLIN and LWS instruments, at 0.''5 and 0.''25 resolutions, respectively. Of 172 survey objects, 85 were detected. Among the 22 multiple systems observed, 15 were resolved and their individual component fluxes determined. A plot of the frequency distribution of the detected objects with SED spectral slope shows that YSOs spend ~4 x 105 yr in the flat-spectrum phase, clearing out their remnant infall envelopes. Mid-infrared variability is found among a significant fraction of the surveyed objects and is found to occur for all SED classes with optically thick disks. Large-amplitude near-infrared variability, also found for all SED classes with optically thick disks, seems to occur with somewhat higher frequency at the earlier evolutionary stages. Although a general trend of mid-infrared excess and near-infrared veiling exists progressing through SED classes, with Class I objects generally exhibiting rK [?] 1, flat-spectrum objects with rK [?] 0.58, and Class III objects with rK = 0, Class II objects exhibit the widest range of rK values, ranging from 0 [?] rK [?] 4.5. However, the highly variable value of veiling that a single source can exhibit in any of the SED classes in which active disk accretion can take place is striking and is direct observational evidence for highly time-variable accretion activity in disks. Finally, by comparing mid-infrared versus near-infrared excesses in a subsample with well-determined effective temperatures and extinction values, disk-clearing mechanisms are explored. The results are consistent with disk clearing proceeding from the inside out.

- Abstract
The diabetic-prone BioBreeding Wistar rat (BB/DP) is an autoimmune model of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. Approximately 80–90% of the animals are hyperglycemic (BB/DPh) by 90–120 days of age while those that do not become diabetic in adolescence (BB/DPn) remain normoglycemic for life. Likewise, rats in the diabetes-resistant (BB/DR) strain are normoglycemic. Although renal morphological studies have been carried out in this model, ultrastructural observations of age- and diabetes-related extracellular matrix (ECM) changes, including glomerular basement membrane (GBM) morphometry, are not available. Moreover, possible renal changes in the relatively uncommon BB/DPncontrol animals have not been reported. The current electron microscopic study was carried out to investigate temporal changes in detergent-treated acellular ECM in BB/DPhrats at 2 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, and 1 year postonset of moderate hyperglycemia. Age-matched BB/DR and BB/DPncontrol animals were also examined. Our data demonstrate age- and diabetes-related alterations in mesangial matrix distributions and GBM widths and show for the first time significant increases in GBM thickening in both hyperglycemic (BB/DPh) and normoglycemic (BB/DPn) rats when compared to age-matched BB/DR controls. Surprisingly, the rate of increase is greatest in BB/DPnanimals. Although the pathogenesis of diabetic basement membrane disease is not completely understood, GBM thickening is widely regarded as a morphological consequence of hyperglycemia. However, data in the current investigation show that ECM alterations, including significantly increased GBM thickness, may occur in genetically diabetic animals in the absence of hyperglycemia. © 2004 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

15. Structure of the Mid-Infrared-emitting Disk around WL 16

- Abstract
WL 16 is a unique member of the embedded young stellar population in the nearby r Ophiuchi cloud core: its extended, high surface brightness disk is visible only at mid-infrared wavelengths. We present diffraction-limited images, from 7.9 to 24.5 mm, of WL 16 acquired at the Keck II telescope. We take advantage of the ~0.''3 angular resolution of the mid-infrared images to derive physical parameters for the central object by self-consistently combining them with available near-infrared spectroscopy, point-spread function fit photometry, and pre-main-sequence evolutionary tracks. We find the central star to be a 250 L, 4 M, Herbig Ae star, seen through foreground material of the r Oph cloud core that provides an extinction of AV = 31 +- 1 mag. WL 16's disk is detected through all nine observed passbands, not only those four that sample polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission features. We confirm, therefore, that the emitting particles are composed of both PAHs and very small (5-100 A) graphitic grains. The disk size as observed through the four PAH filters is 7'' x 3.''5, corresponding to a disk diameter of ~900 AU. The disk's major axis is at a position angle of 60deg +- 2deg and is viewed at an inclination angle of 62.deg2 +- 0.deg4 to our line of sight. Our derived inclination angle is in excellent agreement with the inclination previously inferred for the inner disk (R [?] 30 R) from kinematic modeling of the near-infrared spectral lines of CO. We can distinguish structure within the PAH disk at unprecedented resolution. We confirm a resolved (1.''5 diameter) core component at 7.9 and 8.8 mm due to emission from positively charged PAHs. An enhancement in the emission at 12.5 mm at the disk's edges is found for the first time and signals the presence of larger ([?]50-80 carbon atoms) and/or more hydrogenated PAHs than those found in the bulk of the disk. We find a disk asymmetry, observed at all nine mid-infrared wavelengths, at projected radii 1''-2.''5 (corresponding to 125 AU [?] r [?] 300 AU) from the central source.

16. High-Resolution Mid-Infrared Images of the Nucleus of M81

- Abstract
We observed two nearby galaxies with potential or weak indications of nuclear activity, M32 and M81, with the MIRLIN mid-IR camera at N band (10.79 mm). M32 is not detected, but we give detailed measurements of the nucleus of M81. Our observations of M81 show a bright nuclear point source at N, and comparison to measurements made in the early 1970s gives an increase in nuclear flux of nearly a factor of 2. If the comparison is accurate, the nuclear mid-IR emission must ultimately be powered by a variable, compact source, similar to that in Seyfert galaxies and quasars. M81 has been classified in the literature as a low-luminosity LINER, not a pure Seyfert galaxy. Further, it has been suggested that this and other low-luminosity active galactic nuclei may have intrinsically different spectra than Seyfert galaxies and quasars. However, we find that the relative fluxes in the X-ray, mid-IR, and radio bands, all essentially unaffected by extinction and galaxy pollution, show a nuclear continuum remarkably like that of a bona fide Seyfert galaxy or quasar.

- Abstract
We describe the development of a mid-infrared camera intended for use at the Palomar 5-m telescope and at the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility. The camera is based on Rockwell's HF-16 128×128 Si:As BIB array. This array is unusual in that it has a well depth of approximately 30 million electrons; this will allow the use of traditional broadband astronomical filters (N and Q) while keeping a reasonable field-of-view. Measured array performance indicates that it has a read noise of 1100 electrons and shows non-linearities of <1% up to 65% of full well. In this paper, we discuss the array and its operating characteristics and we give a brief overview of the camera design.

18. The Quantum Efficiency and Diffractive Image Artifacts of Si:As IBC mid-IR Detector Arrays at 5-10 ?m: Implications for the JWST/MIRI Detectors

- Abstract
Arsenic doped back illuminated blocked impurity band (BIBIB) silicon detectors have advanced near and mid-IR astronomy for over thirty years; they have high quantum efficiency (QE), especially at wavelengths longer than 10 ?m, and a large spectral range. Their radiation hardness is also an asset for space based instruments. Three examples of Si:As BIBIB arrays are used in the Mid-InfraRed Instrument (MIRI) of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), observing between 5 and 28 ?m. In this paper, we analyze the parameters leading to high quantum efficiency (up to ?60%) for the MIRI devices between 5 and 10 ?m. We also model the cross-shaped artifact that was first noticed in the 5.7 and 7.8 ?m Spitzer/IRAC images and has since also been imaged at shorter wavelength (?10 ?m) laboratory tests of the MIRI detectors. The artifact is a result of internal reflective diffraction off the pixel-defining metallic contacts to the readout detector circuit. The low absorption in the arrays at the shorter wavelengths enables photons diffracted to wide angles to cross the detectors and substrates multiple times. This is related to similar behavior in other back illuminated solid-state detectors with poor absorption, such as conventional CCDs operating near 1 ?m. We investigate the properties of the artifact and its dependence on the detector architecture with a quantum-electrodynamic (QED) model of the probabilities of various photon paths. Knowledge of the artifact properties will be especially important for observations with the MIRI LRS and MRS spectroscopic modes.
