The conformational analysis of 2-amino-6-methoxy-3-nitropyridine molecule (AMNP) has been carried out using density functional theory calculations. The vibrational spectra of the molecule is simulated theoretically and compared experimentally, and the vibrational frequencies are assigned on the basis of potential energy distribution calculations. Electronic properties of the molecule derived from the theoretical ultraviolet–visible spectrum are validated experimentally. The higher non-linear optical activity of the molecule is indicated in the first-order hyperpolarizability calculations. The natural bond orbital and Mulliken atomic charge distribution analysis confirm intramolecular charge transfers and intramolecular interactions. The Frontier molecular orbitals are plotted, and the related molecular properties are calculated and discussed. The molecular electrostatic potential contour map is simulated. As the presence of intramolecular interactions and the associated charge transfers between the pyridine ring of AMNP molecule and the lone pair of oxygen is a common molecular feature of a pharmaceutical compound, this investigation paves the way for its possible biomedical applications. Further, the considerably higher non-linear optical (NLO) activity of the molecule identified suggests its potential applications in the design of new optical materials.

Every year a substantial proportion of deaths in India occur due to burn injuries. Prolonged morbidity as well as temporary and permanent disability due to burns results in a heavy economic loss. The etiological factors of burn injuries vary considerably in different communities and regions and hence the need for detailed epidemiological studies to understand the problem status in different regions. This study was aimed to study the sociodemographic profile of burn patients and to evaluate the causes, manner, and place of occurrence of burns injuries along with its outcome. A registry-based retrospective study was conducted at a tertiary care hospital in coastal South India, and the medical records of all the patients admitted to the burns centre during the year 2009 were reviewed. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 11.5. A total of 101 burn patients were admitted during the study period. The burn patients were aged between 4 months and 80 years with a mean age of 32.11 (± 3.46) years. The overall male to female ratio was 0.83:1. Majority of the patients were Hindus and were married. Flame burns were the most common etiology for sustaining burns (82.2%). Most of the burn injuries were sustained at home (n = 81, 80.2%), and the manner was designated as accidental in 79.2% of the cases. The TBSA involvement in burns ranged from 5 to 100% and the mean TBSA was found to be 45.8 ± 24.7%. A higher TBSA involvement is associated with an increased risk of mortality and this association between TBSA and mortality was found to be statistically significant (P< .05). Mortality rate in our study was 40.9%. Septicemia (n = 24, 63.2%) was the most common cause of death followed by shock (n = 12, 31.6%). Higher mortality is found to be associated with female sex, suicides, and flame burns. This study identifies the epidemiological and clinical features associated with burn injuries in coastal South India. Majority of the burn victims in our study were married females of younger age group. Although the manner of sustaining burns was mostly accidental, females were proportionately more commonly the victims of suicides and homicides than males. Injuries and deaths due to burns are preventable, provided a community-specific preventive program is implemented with a strong educational component.

We have applied concepts from information theory for a comparative analysis of donor (gt) and acceptor (ag) splice site regions in the genes of five different organisms by calculating their mutual information content (relative entropy) over a selected block of nucleotides. A similar pattern that the information content decreases as the block size increases was observed for both regions in all the organisms studied. This result suggests that the information required for splicing might be contained in the consensus of ~6–8 nt at both regions. We assume from our study that even though the nucleotides are showing some degrees of conservation in the flanking regions of the splice sites, certain level of variability is still tolerated, which leads the splicing process to occur normally even if the extent of base pairing is not fully satisfied. We also suggest that this variability can be compensated by recognizing different splice sites with different spliceosomal factors.

Background:Eradication of H. pyloriinfection cures peptic ulcer disease and conversely, relapse is associated with reappearance of H. pyloriinfection. However, it is not clear whether the recurrence of ulcers following H. pylorieradication is due to recrudescence (identical strain) of the previous infection or as a result of exogenous reinfection (different strain) by another strain. The aim of the present study was to analyze the FAFLP patterns of pre and post treatment H. pylorisamples to check if the recurrence was due to recrudescence or reinfection. Materials and Methods:24 of 30 duodenal ulcer (DU) subjects screened for H. pyloriinfection were positive for H. pyloriinfection. The treatment regime included pantoprazole, ciprofloxacin and amoxicillin. The patients were called for a repeat endoscopy after one month and screened for H. pyloriinfection. FAFLP analysis and PCR for the cagA and vacA gene was performed for the pre and post treatment samples. Results:Of the 24 positive H.pyloripatients, only 6 were negative after treatment and the remaining 18 were positive for H.pyloriinfection. The analysis of the pre and post treatment samples of the 18 patients showed that the FAFLP profiles of the initial and follow-up pools were similar to one another. Conclusion:It can be concluded that in the present series of patients, reinfection was due to recrudescence of infection due to incomplete eradication. The study also suggests that DNA fingerprinting by FAFLP provides discriminatory and complementary data for identifying strains of H. pyloriwhile monitoring therapy.

Phospholipid-hydroperoxide glutathione peroxidase (PhGPx) is a selenoenzyme that reduces hydroperoxides of phospholipid, cholesterol, and cholesteryl ester. Previous studies suggested that both the mitochondrial and nonmitochondrial forms of PhGPx are approximately 170 amino acids long. In this study, we isolated a full-length cDNA clone encoding rat testis PhGPx. Based on sequence analysis, the cDNA encodes a protein of 197 amino acids, with translation initiating at AUG61. The additional 27 amino acids at the N terminus contain the features of a mitochondrial targeting sequence. In vitro translation of the full-length PhGPx mRNA initiated predominantly at AUG61. However, translation initiated at AUG141 when AUG61 was deleted. An RNase protection assay was used to map the 5'-ends of PhGPx mRNAs in rat tissues. We identified two major windows of transcription initiation that are tissue-specific. Rat testis predominantly expresses larger transcripts that encode the 197-amino acid protein containing the potential mitochondrial targeting signal. The predominant smaller transcripts in somatic tissues lack AUG61 and encode a 170-amino acid protein, which may represent the nonmitochondrial forms of PhGPx. Our results suggest that the use of alternative transcription and translation start sites determines the subcellular localization of PhGPx in different tissues.
