- Abstract
Qualitative work suggests that young people’s motives for playing drinking games (DGs) extend beyond those assessed in the Motives for Playing Drinking Games (MPDG) measure. Using a mixed-methods approach, we tested whether the 7-factor model of the MPDG would emerge among university students from Australia, New Zealand, and Argentina, and whether their open-ended responses regarding their reasons for playing would map onto the MPDG subscales. Students (N =895; ages = 18–30 yrs) completed the MPDG-33 measure and an open-ended-question regarding their reasons for playing DGs. We found support for the 7-factor model of the MPDG among students across sites. Open-ended responses revealed that students were motivated to play for a variety of reasons, some of which overlapped with the MPDG subscales while others did not. We present a conceptual model that considers motives specific to alcohol consumption in the context of a DG andreasons/possible motives for playing a DG given its specific features.

- Abstract
Abstract. The present study aimed to adapt and validate a Spanish version of the Ruminative Thought Style Questionnaire (RTSQ) and test for measurement invariance of the RTSQ across college students in the US, Spain, and Argentina (n= 1,632). Additionally, we examined/compared across these countries, criterion-related (i.e., concurrent) validity of RTSQ factors (i.e., problem-focused thoughts, counterfactual thinking, repetitive thoughts, and anticipatory thoughts) on constructs theoretically-associated with rumination. Consistent with previous findings, we found that a 15-item 4-factor RTSQ provided a more adequate model compared to single-factor CFA models (15- and 20-item versions) in every country. The reliability and validity of the subscales for the Spanish version were satisfactory-to-good in Spain and Argentina. Using multigroup confirmatory factor analyses, we found the 15-item 4-factor version of the RTSQ to be invariant across countries and sex. Bivariate correlations provided evidence for the criterion-related validity of the 4-factor RTSQ across the countries. Our findings suggest that self-report items of the RTSQ convey the same meaning, and that responses to those items load onto the same set of factors, across languages and cultures of administration. Taken together, our findings serve as a foundation for future cross-cultural work testing models in which rumination is a central facet.

Lonchophylla is a genus of currently 13 nectar-feeding bat species found throughout Central and South America, including Lonchophylla mordaxThomas, 1903, a species endemic to Brazil. Currently nationally categorized as 'Data Deficient', L. mordax has several knowledge gaps, including basic ones on its natural history. Here, we provide information on L. mordax's pattern of nocturnal activity, reproductive peak, sex and age ratios, its relationship with ectoparasites, as well as its distribution and taxonomy. Fieldwork was conducted in the Caatinga (seasonally dry tropical forest) in north-eastern Brazil between 2012 and 2015, during which we captured 110 L. mordax individuals. Our results showed that there was no significant difference in body mass or forearm length between males and females, with a sex ratio of 1:1. We obtained four adult individuals for every subadult captured. Lonchophylla mordax individuals were active throughout the entire sample night period but with a significant peak in activity in the first 30 min after sunset. The number of captures was strongly negatively correlated with minutes after sunset. Pregnant females were captured between July and February, and subadults were captured mainly in July and August, suggesting that the peak of births occurred at the end of the dry period and the beginning of the rainy period in the study area. Additionally, almost 70% of L. mordax individuals were parasitized by streblid flies, with no significant difference in parasite load observed across seasons, sexes, and ages. However, the individuals' body condition index was negatively correlated with the parasite load. Natural history research, such as that described here, helps to fill knowledge gaps on L. mordax, including providing data for the decision-making in conservation plans. Moreover, we add information for a species-rich genus with closely related, but poorly-studied, species globally listed as threatened or near-threatened. - Abstract
This study aimed to assess the thermal environment, behaviour, hygiene, and lameness in dairy cows with different numbers of lactations housed in a compost-bedded pack barn system in a humid subtropical climate during autumn and winter. Between April and July 2016, behavioural and microclimatic environment assessments were conducted in a compost barn system, and hygiene and lameness assessments were performed. Crossbred cows in lactation (n = 10) were divided into two groups according to the number of lactations: primiparous and multiparous. Air temperature, relative humidity, and air ventilation speed were measured at 09:00, 12:00, and 15:00. The cows’ hygiene and lameness were evaluated using subjective scores ranging from 1 to 4 and 1 to 5, respectively. The daytime behaviour assessment was performed as sampling 0/1, using the focal method. Primiparous cows showed a greater probability of walking (P<0.05) than multiparous cows between 09:20 and 11:20, and at 15:20, and increased the water intake at 14:00. Regarding the eating behaviour and the effect of time of day within each group (P<0.05), the cows ate more in the morning’s early hours. The cows’ hygiene scores were 1 or 2, and most cows presented scores of 1 or 2 for lameness. Our research has shown that microclimatic variables may influence the walking behaviour and water intake of primiparous cows during the hottest periods of the day, even during cold weather, in a humid subtropical climate. The dairy cows showed low hygiene and lameness scores, which indicates that the compost bar positively influenced cleanliness and locomotion comfort.

- Abstract
This paper has the purpose of comparing the innovation index of BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) countries with their economic complexity (EC) from 2011 to 2014. The research was constructed through two databases: the Atlas of Economic Complexity and the Global Innovation Index. The results show that India and Brazil declined the most in the innovation ranking. Russia had the worst drop in the EC ranking. China climbed up seven positions in the EC ranking, but presented stagnation in innovation. South Africa showed the most similarities in the comparison, climbing up in both rankings. The conclusion reached is that the EC ranking and the innovation ranking are not equivalent; they display discrepancies regarding the rises and declines among BRICS countries.

- Abstract
In this study, we investigated the influence of a silvopastoral system on the thermal environment, behaviour and thermoregulation of dairy heifers in a subtropical climate. The experiment was conducted on a dairy farm in Southwest Paraná, Brazil, during the summer of 2014. Crossbred Holstein × Jersey dairy heifers (n = 10) were used in a split-plot design. The fixed effects in this study include time of day (9:00–10:00, 13:00–14:00, and 17:00–18:00 h) under silvopastoral or open pastures conditions, which were the main-plot and split-plot factors, respectively. To assess the environmental conditions in both systems, air temperature, relative humidity and wind speed were recorded. In addition, the temperature-humidity index was calculated based on the microcli-mate measurements. Respiratory rate and hair coat surface temperature of heifers were measured in both groups during time of day (30 days). Diurnal behaviour using focal observations with 0/1 sampling was observed. Data were analysed using Bayesian inference with a mixed effects model. The air temperature was higher (P<0.05) in open pasture conditions than the silvopasture system. Temperature-humidity index values for the silvopasture system were lower than open pasture during the hottest hours of the day. Regarding thermoregulation responses, there was an interaction between time of day and pasture environment (P<0.05). Heifers showed lower respiratory rates and hair coat surface temperature values (P<0.05) when access to shade was provided, mainly during the hottest periods in the afternoon. In addition, there was also an interaction between rumination and water intake (P<0.05), which indicates a higher rumination frequency for animals in the silvopasture system during the hottest period, as well as a higher water intake frequency for heifers in open pasture during midday. These findings imply that the arrangement of trees in a silvopasture system provides better thermal comfort conditions for dairy heifers raised in a subtropical climate.

- Abstract
Alcohol consumption is highly prevalent in college students, being important to identify risk factors for alcohol consumption. Thus, this work explored students' alcohol consumption and the influence of drinking contexts and how the lockdown modified drinking contexts and its influence on alcohol consumption. Argentinean college students (N= 1762; 74.8% women; Mean age = 23.25 ± 2.64) completed a survey that assessed alcohol consumption and related contexts before and during the lockdown. Latent Class Analysis identified 5 context-classes that showed different alcohol consumption patterns. A high percent of students drink alcohol in various contexts, but especially those related with social encounters with peers. Moreover, students who consume alcohol at social events with peers tend to have higher consumption rates per occasion and on a monthly basis. The confinement measures could have an effect on reducing alcohol use in college students, probably by modifying the drinking context of some students. college students consume alcohol extensively, which is worrying considering the health disturbances that it produces. Moreover, it is important to consider special situations such as the lockdown -that could modify contexts and its influence on consumption-to devise intervention strategies to reduce alcohol consumption.

- Abstract
This paper presents results of the test of methods for numerical inversion of the Laplace Transform for solving the one-dimensional advection-diffusion equation, which describes solute transport processes, focusing on the contaminant transport in a porous medium. The performance of Stehfest and Power Series Expansion methods is analyzed, for diffusion-dominated and advection-dominated transport problems under linear flow condition. Numerical results are compared to the analytical solution by means of the absolute error. Based on these results, we concluded that both methods, Stehfest and Power Series Expansion, are recommended only for diffusion-dominated cases.

- Abstract

Fossil fuels, e.g. gasoline and diesel oil, account for substantial share of the pollution that affects marine ecosystems. Environmental metabolomics is an emerging field that may help unravel the effect of these xenobiotics on seaweeds and provide methodologies for biomonitoring coastal ecosystems. In the present study, FTIR and multivariate analysis were used to discriminate metabolic profiles of Ulva lactuca after in vitro exposure to diesel oil and gasoline, in combinations of concentrations (0.001%, 0.01%, 0.1%, and 1.0% - v/v) and times of exposure (30 min, 1 h, 12 h, and 24 h). PCA and HCA performed on entire mid-infrared spectral window were able to discriminate diesel oil-exposed thalli from the gasoline-exposed ones. HCA performed on spectral window related to the protein absorbance (1700–1500 cm − 1 ) enabled the best discrimination between gasoline-exposed samples regarding the time of exposure, and between diesel oil-exposed samples according to the concentration. The results indicate that the combination of FTIR with multivariate analysis is a simple and efficient methodology for metabolic profiling with potential use for biomonitoring strategies. - Abstract
Investments in infrastructure provide an increase in the market value of the poor population's assets when their residence is served by sewage, water and telephone networks. They also allow each region to specialise in the economic activities for which they have the greatest vocation (agriculture, services, etc.), creating productivity gains and quality for the economy. In this sense, this short paper aims, through bibliographic research on SCOPUS database and on federal agencies websites, to highlight the main modes of transportation in Brazil and evaluate the amount of investment done in infrastructure in recent years in Brazil.

- Abstract
This study aims to investigate which technological levels of industry contributed most to the formation and development of the gross domestic product (GDP) and the Human Development Index (HDI) in Brazil from 2000 to 2010. The HDI and the GDP were the dependent variables selected for the study. The independent variables were selected from the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) base: they included employees, salaries and manufacturing establishments from 23 industries that were separated into technological levels according to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Multiple regressions were used to indicate the relationship of dependency and explanatory power between dependent and explanatory variables. The results showed that the industries with mid-low and low technological levels have greater impact on the formation of GDP and HDI in Brazil. These two technological levels were primarily developed with the arrival of multinationals in the 1990s and 2000s, as found in the theory background. An empirical research spanning a longer time period and based on other sources would possibly give more strength to the econometric study. This study has implications for academicians and entrepreneurs willing to understand the Brazilian market and industry history.

31. Orbit orientation in didelphid marsupials (Didelphimorphia: Didelphidae).

- Abstract
Usually considered a morphologically conservative group, didelphid marsupials present considerable variation in ecology and body size, some of which were shown to relate to morphological structures. Thus, changes on orbit morphology are likely and could be related to that variation. We calculated orbit orientation in 873 specimens of 16 Didelphidae genera yielding estimates of orbits convergence (their position relative to midsagittal line) and verticality (their position relative to frontal plane). We then compared similarities in these variables across taxa to ecological, morphological and phylogenetic data to evaluate the influencing factors on orbit orientation in didelphids. We found an inverse relation between convergence and verticality. Didelphids orbits have low verticality but are highly convergent, yet orbit orientation differs significantly between taxa, and that variation is related to morphological aspects of the cranium. Rostral variables are the only morphological features correlated with orbit orientation: increasing snout length yields more convergent orbits, whereas increase on snout breadth imply in more vertical orbits. Size and encephalization quotients are uncorrelated with orbit orientation. Among ecological data, diet showed significant correlation whereas locomotion is the factor that less affects the position of orbits. Phylogeny is uncorrelated to any orbital parameters measured. Ecological factors seemingly play a more important role on orbit orientation than previously expected, and differentiation on orbit orientation seems to be more functional than inherited. Thus, despite the apparent homogeneity on didelphid morphology, there is subtle morphological variability that may be directly related to feeding behavior.

- Abstract

- Abstract

- Abstract
ABSTRACTThe extraintestinal pathogen termed avian pathogenic Escherichia coli(APEC) is known to cause colibacillosis in chickens. The molecular basis of APEC pathogenesis is not fully elucidated yet. In this work, we deleted a component of the Yad gene cluster (yadC) in order to understand the role of Yad in the pathogenicity of the APEC strain SCI-07. In vitro, the transcription level of yadCwas upregulated at 41°C and downregulated at 22°C. The yadCexpression in vivowas more pronounced in lungs than in spleen, suggesting a role in the early steps of the infection. Chicks infected with the wild-type and mutant strains presented, respectively, 80% and 50% mortality rates. The ΔyadCstrain presented a slightly decreased ability to adhere to HeLa cells with or without the d-mannose analog compared with the wild type. Real-time PCR (RT-PCR) assays showed that fimHwas downregulated (P< 0.05) and csgAand ecpAwere slightly upregulated in the mutant strain, showing that yadCmodulates expression of other fimbriae. Bacterial internalization studies showed that the ΔyadCstrain had a lower number of intracellular bacteria recovered from Hep-2 cells and HD11 cells than the wild-type strain (P< 0.05). Motility assays in soft agar demonstrated that the ΔyadCstrain was less motile than the wild type (P< 0.01). Curiously, flagellum-associated genes were not dramatically downregulated in the ΔyadCstrain. Taken together, the results show that the fimbrial adhesin Yad contributes to the pathogenicity and modulates different biological characteristics of the APEC strain SCI-07.

Aim: To compare the use of etoricoxib and dexamethasone for postoperative pain prevention and control after mucogingival surgery. Methods: Fifty-eight patients with indication for mucogingival surgery took part in this randomized parallel double-blind clinical trial. They were divided into three groups (G): G1 -- placebo 1 h before surgery; G2 -- 8 mg dexamethasone 1 h before surgery; G3 -- 90 mg etoricoxib 1 h before surgery. Pain intensity was assessed in donor and recipient sites separately using the 101-point numerical rating scale NRS -- 101, every hour for the first 8 h after surgery and three times a day on the following 3 days. Results: there was a statistically significant difference in the postoperative pain intensity in the donor site between G1 and G3 after 1 h, 2 h, 3 h, 7 h, 8 h and on the second day -- in the evening after 32 h; between G1 and G2 after 2 h and 3 h, and between G2 and G3 only after the first hour. Pain intensity in the recipient site was statistically significant between G1 and G3 after 1 and 2 h (p<0.05). In addition, there was a lower ingestion of rescue medication in G2 and in G3 than in G1 (p=0.002). Conclusions: the use of a pre-emptive single dose of etoricoxib or dexamethasone may be considered an effective protocol for postoperative pain prevention and control after mucogingival surgery. The objective of this study was to analyze the effects of toothbrushing with desensitizing toothpastes on dentin permeability and dentinal tubule occlusion. Fifty rats provided two hundred incisor teeth divided into five groups: DW, brushed with distilled water (control); FT, brushed with fluoride toothpaste; SCT, brushed with strontium chloride toothpaste; PCT, brushed with potassium citrate toothpaste; and PNT, brushed with potassium nitrate toothpaste. Cavities were prepared to expose the dentinal tubules, and the incisor teeth were brushed using the experimental agents. After each treatment, Evans blue dye solution was applied to the teeth. Dentin permeability was analyzed using scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-rays (EDX). There were significant differences (p < 0.0001, ANOVA) among the groups regarding dentin permeability, number of dentinal tubules, diameter of dentinal tubules, and opened tubular area. In the SCT, PCT and PNT groups, opened and partially occluded tubules, deposits, and a few smear layers were observed. In the DW and FT groups, most of the dentinal tubules were open, with no deposits or smear layers on the dentin. EDX revealed peaks of calcium and phosphorus in all of the groups, as well as traces of strontium in the SCT group and of potassium in the PCT and PNT groups. Desensitizing toothpaste decreased dentin permeability, although it produced only partial dentin tubule occlusion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To compare in vitro shear bond strength (SBS) of different orthodontic adhesives in bonding and repeatedly rebonding metal brackets, and to evaluate the bond failure site with the adhesive remnant index (ARI). Methods: Specimens consisted of 90 extracted human first premolars, randomly divided into three groups (n=30). The adhesives Alpha Plast (AP), Concise™ (CO) and Transbond™ XT (TB) were used in each group. Three SBS tests were performed, i.e., one at T0 (initial) and the other two at T1 and T2 (first and second rebondings, respectively), observing a 24-hour interval. The tests were performed in a Shimadzu AG-I (10kN) SBS testing machine, at a speed of 0.5 mm/min. Results: SBS data were subjected to ANOVA, Tukey's test and Bonferroni test (p<0.05). For the ARI, the Kruskal Wallis test was performed, followed by the Dunn test. The results revealed that at T
o groups AP and CO showed SBS values that were near, but above TB values; and at T1 and T2 , the highest SBS values were observed for the AP group, followed by the CO and TB groups. Conclusion: Statistically significant differences were found in SBS between groups AP, CO and TB during bonding and repeated rebondings of unused metal brackets, with group AP achieving the highest SBS value. Regarding ARI, adhesive AP exhibited bond failure at the enamel-adhesive interface, with a higher enamel fracture frequency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

MICROLEAKAGE (Dentistry) ,DENTAL fillings ,DENTAL caries ,THIRD molars ,TOOTH cervix ,THERMOCYCLING - Abstract
Aim: This in vitro study evaluated gap width formation and marginal microleakage in Class II composite restorations light-cured with three different light-curing units. Methods: Standardized cavities in the proximal surfaces of 36 human third molars were made with margins located below the cementoenamel junction. Cavities were restored with Filtek P60 (3M ESPE), inserted with a photocondenser tip and light-cured with three different methods: GI - Optilux401 (halogen); GII -- ColtoluxLED (LED) and GIII --UltraLumeLED5 (LED). After finishing the restorations, teeth were subjected to a thermal cycling regimen of 500 cycles (5°C ± 2°C and 55°C ± 2°C), totalizing 500 cycles. Thereafter, the teeth were sectioned in a buccolingual direction and in the center of the restorations. Half of the specimens (18) were used to evaluate marginal microleakage, by measuring of dye penetration in cross-sectioned specimens, and the other half was used to analyzed the gap formation width by SEM observations (1000X). Data were submitted to Kruskal-Wallis (α=0.05). Results: The mean values of gap width (µm) were: GI 3.28±3.34; GII 1.48±1.89 and GIII 3.11±3.45, and microleakage was not affected by the light-curing units. Conclusions: There were no differences between the light-curing methods in gap formation and marginal microleakage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Background: Postoperative pain is an adverse effect of periodontal surgeries and may therefore be prevented or minimized. This study was conducted to evaluate the clinical efficacy of two selective cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitors, celecoxib and etoricoxib, on pain prevention after periodontal surgery. Methods: For this double-masked, parallel-group, placebo-controlled, and randomized clinical trial, 56 open-flap debridement surgeries were performed. The groups received three different protocols 1 hour before surgery: 1) 200 mg celecoxib (and another 200 mg 12 hours after the first dose); 2) 120 mg etoricoxib; or 3) placebo. Pain intensity and discomfort were assessed up to 2 days after surgery using the visual analog scale and the four-point verbal rating scale, respectively. Patients were instructed to take 750 mg acetaminophen as a rescue medication if necessary. Results: Pain intensity levels in the etoricoxib group were lower than in the placebo group at the 2-, 3-, 4-, 5-, 6-, and 7-hour periods after surgery (Kruskal-Wallis test; P <0.05). There was no statistically significant difference between celecoxib and etoricoxib. Discomfort in the celecoxib group was significantly lower than in the placebo group only at the 3-hour period (P= 0.03). Rescue medication intake was significantly less frequent in the etoricoxib group than in the placebo and celecoxib groups (analysis of variance; P = 0.009). Conclusion: it was concluded that a single etoricoxib dose is not superior to two split doses of celecoxib when used for pain prevention after open-flap debridement surgery. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Background: Several anti-inflammatory drugs have been used to reduce pain and discomfort after periodontal surgeries. This study evaluates the efficacy of using etoricoxib and dexamethasone for pain prevention after open-flap debridement surgery. Methods: For this prospective, double-masked, crossover, placebo-controlled, randomized clinical trial, open-flap debridement surgeries were performed on 15 patients (eight males and seven females, age range 20 to 56 years: mean age ± SD: 40 ± 9.7 years) who presented with chronic periodontitis after nonsurgical periodontal therapy at three quadrants. Each patient underwent three surgical procedures at intervals of 30 days and received one of the following premedication protocols 1-hour before surgery: group 1 = placebo, group 2 = 8 mg dexamethasone, and group 3 = 120 mg etoricoxib. Rescue medication (750 mg acetaminophen) was given to each patient who was instructed to take it when necessary. Pain intensity and discomfort were evaluated by a 101-point numeric rate scale and a four-point verbal rate scale, respectively, hourly for the first 8 hours after surgery and three times a day on the following 3 days. Results: The results demonstrate that groups 2 and 3 present reduced postoperative pain-intensity levels compared to group 1. There were statistically significant differences at the 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 hour-periods after surgery (Friedman test; P<0.05). Furthermore, rescue-medication intake was significantly lower for groups 2 and 3 than for group 1 (analysis of variance; P<0.02). Conclusion: The adoption of a preemptive medication protocol using etoricoxib or dexamethasone may be considered effective for pain and discomfort prevention after open-flap debridement surgeries. This study was done to assess the influence of the topical application of two different desensitizing agents on dentin permeability and dentinal tubule occlusion. Twenty-one rats provided 84 teeth: 36 for the in vitro and 48 for the in vivo investigation. The following agents were tested: Group 1, 2% potassium nitrate plus 2% sodium fluoride gel; Group 2, 5% sodium fluoride varnish; Group 3, 3% hydroxyethylcellulose gel (control). Cervical cavities were prepared and EDTA was applied to expose the dentinal tubules. After each treatment, Evans blue dye was applied to the teeth. Dentin permeability, scanning electron microscope (SEM) sections, and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) were analyzed. One-way ANOVA was used to compare the data. There were significant differences (P < 0.05) among groups for dentin permeability, number of tubules/mm2, tubule area and tubular diameter. Groups 1 and 2 (both in vitro and in vivo) showed open and partially occluded tubules. Group 3 had the most open tubules. EDX revealed similar composition for both experimental conditions. Within the limits of the study, 2% nitrate potassium plus 2% sodium fluoride gel and 5% fluoride varnish decreased the dentin permeability, resulting in partial tubular occlusion.
