Volatile compounds released by disturbed and calm female and male Lygus lineolariswere collected and analyzed. Six major compounds were present in samples from disturbed bugs and from calm females: (E)-2-hexenal, 1-hexanol, (E)-2-hexenol, hexyl butyrate, (E)-2-hexenyl butyrate, and (E)-2,4-oxohexenal. (E)-2-hexenal was lacking in volatiles collected from calm males. Hexyl butyrate accounted for approximately 68% and 66% of volatiles released by agitated and calm females, and 87% and 88% of volatiles released by agitated and calm males, respectively. Blends released by disturbed insects differed quantitatively from blends released by calm insects, with amounts of compounds increasing 75–350 times in samples from disturbed insects. In static air bioassays, both females and males were repelled by natural volatiles collected from females and by five-component [(E)-2,4-oxohexenal excluded] and six-component synthetic blends at doses of 1 and 10 bug-hours, indicating that these volatiles may serve an alarm or epideictic function, as well as a possible role as defensive allomones. Adults also avoided hexyl butyrate, (E)-2-hexenyl butyrate, (E)-2-hexenol, and (E)-2,4-oxohexenal, but not 1-hexanol and (E)-2-hexenal when compounds were assayed individually in static air bioassays at doses equal to 1 bug-hour. When tested over 1 day in two-choice cage trials, adults did not prefer untreated bean plants over bean plants surrounded by vials releasing up to 8.1 mg/hr (=234 bug-hours) of the five-component synthetic blend. Therefore, the volatiles produced by disturbed adults would not be useful as a repellent for L. lineolaris.

The aggregation pheromones were studied from two geographical isolates (Hakalau, Hawaii, and Silkwood, Queensland, Australia) of the New Guinea sugarcane weevil, Rhabdoscelus obscurus. Coupled gas chromatographic–electroantennographic detection (GC-EAD) and GC–mass spectrometric (MS) analyses of Porapak Q volatile extract from male and from female Hawaiian R. obscurusrevealed a single EAD-active, male-specific candidate pheromone, which was identified as 2-methyl-4-octanol (1). Corresponding volatile analyses from male and from female Australian R. obscurusconsistently revealed three EAD-active, male-specific candidate pheromone components that were identified as 1, (E2)-6-methyl-2-hepten-4-ol (rhynchophorol) (2), and 2-methyl-4-heptanol (3). In field experiment 1 in Hakalau, Hawaii, traps baited with a stereoisomeric mixture of synthetic 1(3 mg/day) plus sugarcane captured more weevils than did traps baited with 1or sugarcane alone or no bait, indicating that 1is the pheromone of the Hawaiian R. obscuruspopulation. In field experiment 2, conducted in Silkwood, Australia, traps baited with stereoisomeric mixtures of synthetic 1, 2, and 3(3 mg/day each) plus sugarcane caught more weevils than did unbaited traps or traps baited with 1, 2, and 3or sugarcane. Testing candidate pheromone components 1, 2, and 3in experiments 2–5 in all possible binary, ternary, and quaternary combinations with sugarcane, indicated that 1and 2in combination, but not singly, are pheromone components of the Australian R. obscuruspopulation. Weevils from several locations in Australia and Hawaii could not be differentiated using traditional morphological characters or ultrastructural comparisons with scanning electron microscopy (SEM). However, comparisons of mtDNA sequences (cytochrome oxidase I; regions I1 to M4; 201 base pairs) revealed 5.5% variation between the Hawaiian (N= 2) and the Australian (N= 4) samples. There was no intrapopulation variation in sequence data from the weevils from Hawaii versus Australia, suggesting that they are sibling species.

Coleoptera, Oryctes monoceros, African Rhinoceros Beetle, Aggregation Pheromone, Ethyl 4-M ethyloctanoate Ethyl 4-m ethyloctanoate is a male-produced aggregation pheromone of the African rhinoc­eros beetle, Oryctes monoceros (Olivier). It was identified by coupled gas chromatographic-electroantennographic detection (GC -EAD) and coupled GC-mass spectrometry (MS) of Porapak Q-trapped male-produced volatiles. Natural and synthetic ethyl 4-m ethyloctanoate elicited comparable antennal responses. In a field experiment (La Me Research Station, Côte d’Ivoire), synthetic ethyl 4-methyloctanoate released at 30 mg/day attracted both male and fem ale Oryctes, whereas the known, non-beetle-produced attractant, ethyl chrysanthemate, did not attract any Oryctes. Upon improvement of trap design and placement, and the identi­fication of synergistic (plant) volatiles, pheromone-based mass trapping may become an alternative and/or additional strategy to manage O. monoceros, one of the most destructive pests of commercial coconut, oil, and date palms in Africa.

In laboratory bioassays, Porapak Q-captured and steam-distilled volatiles from the bark of host trees, Abies grandis, particularly from root-rot-infected trees, attracted 50–70% of male and female fir engravers, Scolytus ventralis. Gas chromatographic–electroantennographic detection (GC-EAD) analyses of Porapak Q-captured bark volatiles revealed 19 EAD-active compounds of which 13 (mostly monoterpenes) were identified by GC–mass spectrometry (GC-MS). In separate field experiments, multiple-funnel traps baited with two blends of these 13 synthetic volatiles released at 280 and 340 mg/ 24 hr attracted 66 and 93% of the total S. ventraliscaptured, respectively. The clerid predator, Thanasimus undulatus, also responded strongly to the kairomonal volatiles. Additional experiments produced no evidence for aggregation pheromones in S. ventralis.These included laboratory bioassays and GC and GC-EAD analyses of Porapak Q-captured volatiles from male- and female-infested logs or trees undergoing mass attack in the field, GC analyses and/or bioassays of extracts from female accessory glands, extracted volatiles from emerged, attacking and juvenile hormone-treated beetles of both sexes, and videotape analysis of the behavior of attacking beetles on the bark surface. We argue against the hypothesis of pheromone-mediated secondary attraction in S. ventralisand conclude that the attack dynamics of this species can be explained solely by its sensitive primary attraction response to host volatiles.

In laboratory bioassay experiments, the beetles Pityokteines eleganswere attracted to volatiles captured from bolts of grand fir, Abies grandis, colonized by P. elegansmales. Male-specific volatiles detected by coupled gas chromatographic–electroantennographic detection (GC-EAD) analysis and by GC–mass spectrometry employing a chiral column were: (S)-(−)-ipsenol, (+)- and (−)-ipsdienol, and ipsenone. Field experiments demonstrated that 1:1 combinations of (−)-ipsenol and (±)-ipsdienol strongly attracted insects of both sexes to multiple-funnel traps. No beetles were attracted to any of these compounds alone, and both enantiomers of ipsdienol were required with (−)-ipsenol to induce attraction. Ipsenol and ipsdienol are now reported as pheromones of five Pityokteinesspecies. Specificity of semiochemical-based communication between sympatric P. elegansand P. minutusappears to be based on host preference and on the composition and chirality of the pheromone blend.

Coupled gas chromatographic–electroantennographic detection (GC-EAD) analyses and coupled GC-mass spectrometry (MS) of volatiles produced by male and female West Indian sugarcane weevils (WISW), Metamasius hemipterus sericeus(Oliv.), revealed eight male specific, EAD-active compounds: 3-pentanol (1), 2-methyl-4-heptanol (2), 2-methyl-4-octanol (3), 4-methyl-5-nonanol (4), and the corresponding ketones. In field experiments in Florida, alcohols 1–4in combination with sugarcane were most attractive, whereas addition of the ketones or replacement of alcohols with ketones significantly reduced attraction. In Costa Rica field experiments testing alcohols 1–4singly and in all binary, ternary, and quaternary combinations revealed 4in combination with 2was the major aggregation pheromone, equally attracting male and female WISW. Stereoisomeric 4and (4S,5S)-4,the only isomer produced by WISW, were equally attractive. Addition of 4S-, 4R- or (±)-2to (4S,5S)-4significantly enhanced attraction. Sugarcane stalks in combination with 2plus 4(ratio of 1:8) were highly synergistic, whereas EAD-active sugarcane volatiles ethyl acetate, ethyl propionate, or ethyl butyrate only moderately increased attractiveness of the pheromone lure.

Abstract: The petrochemical industry (PCI) has undergone profound changes during the last decade and is continuing to adjust to changing world economic conditions. One of the most important of these is the price of crude oil. Although an equilibrated pricing structure remains to be demonstrated, anticipated adequacy of supply and versatile, innovative methods of converting crude and natural gas to high valued products assures it a vital and healthy future. The product areas in which the PCI and the oleochemical industry (OCI) overlap are actually quite small in terms of the total capacity. In those limited areas of overlap, we expect the role of the PCI during the next several years to continue to be cone of a complementary nature. By providing security of supply at competitive prices, it will create confidence and reliability which will benefit both the petrochemical and oleochemical industries. And most significantly, the resources of the petrochemical industry will also allow it to respond to new market conditions, particularly those of accelerated volume needs and specific performance, with the flexibility and creativity which have been its hallmarks.

Porapak Q-captured volatiles of malePolygraphus rufipennis (Kirby) boring in black spruce and white spruce from Newfoundland and British Columbia, respectively, contained 3-methyl-3-buten-1-ol. Volatiles from logs in which the males had been joined by females contained the compound in reduced quantities. Hindgut extracts from male and femaleP. rufipennis disclosed no male-specific volatiles, but 3-methyl-3-buten-1-ol was detected in extracts of male-produced frass. The compound was not present in extracts from fresh phloem tissue.P. rufipennis of both sexes responded strongly in the field to traps baited with 3-methyl-3-buten-1-ol released at 4390 µg/day. There was little response to unbaited traps, fresh uninfested black spruce logs, or to 3-methyl-3-buten-1-ol released at lower rates. Combination of 3-methyl-3-buten-1-ol with either one of five terpenes prevalent in black spruce did not enhance beetle catch. Approximately half of 20 black spruce trees baited with 3-methyl-3-buten-1-ol were attacked, compared to 20.0% of 10 unbaited control trees. This new aggregation pheromone could be used to monitor or manageP. rufipennis populations.

Abdominal volatiles of female mountain pine beetles,Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins, fed in ponderosa pine,Pinus ponderosa Dougl. ex Laws, and in lodgepole pine,P. contorta var.latifolia Engelmann, were analyzed by gas chromatography and coupled gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and were found to comprise host oleoresin components and beetle-produced alliylic alcohols, aldehydes, and ketones derived from host monoterpenes. Neitherexo- andendo-brevicomin nor frontalin were detected. Three metabolic pathways are proposed to account for the distribution of beetle-produced monoterpene alcohols. The first pathway involves hydroxylation of monoterpene substrates on allylic methyl groups which areE to a methylene or vinyl group. This oxidation pathway is indiscriminate with respect to substrate and probably functions to detoxify monoterpenes. A second pathway, which hydroxylates theendo-cyclic methyleneE to a vinyl methyl group of bicyclic monoterpenes to give almost exclusively thetrans alcohol, is hypothesized to be involved in pheromone production. A third detoxification pathway involves anti-Markovnikov addition of water to theexo-cyclic double bond of ß-phellandrene to give predominantlytrans-2-p-menthen-7-ol.

The chiralities of macrolide lactone aggregation pheromones of five species of economically important grain beetles have been determined by capillary gas chromatographic separation of the diastereomeric (S)-O-acetyllactate derivatives of the hydroxy methyl esters derived from boron trifluoride-catalyzed cleavage of the macrolides in methanol. Chirally pure (Z)-3-dodecen-11-olide (I) is produced in theS configuration byCryptolestes ferrugineus (Stephens) and in theR configuration byOryzaephilus mercator (Fauvel). (Z,Z)-3,6-Dodecadien-11-olide (II) is produced in theR configuration by bothO. mercator andO. surinamensis (L.). (Z,Z)-5,8-Tetradecadien-13-olide (IV) is produced in theR configuration byO. surinamensis and as a 85:15 mixture ofR andS isomers byC. turcicus. (Z)-5-Tetradecen-13-olide (V) is produced in the S configuration byC. pusillus (Schönherr) and as a 33:67 mixture of theR andS isomers byC. turcicus (Grouvelle). The results indicate that in these cucujids, species specificity in pheromone response is maintained at least in part by pheromone chirality.

The response of the sawtoothed grain beetle,Oryzaephilus surinamensis (L.), and the merchant grain beetle,O. mercator (Fauvel), to synthetic racemic and chiral macrolide aggregation pheromones was assessed in pitfall olfactometers.O.mercator utilizes theR enantiomers of (Z)-3-dodecen-11-olide and (Z,Z)-3,6-dodecadien-11-olide.O. surinamensis utilizes theR enantiomers of (Z,Z)-3,6-dodecadien-11-olide and the Synergist (Z,Z)-5,8-tetradecadien-13-olide in combination with achiral (Z,Z)-3,6-dodecadienolide. For both species, the racemates of the respective chiral pheromones were effective attractants. The respectiveS enantiomers were inactive for both species and had no effect on the biological activity of the active antipodes. No diel periodicity in responsiveness to pheromones was detected inOryzaephilus spp. reared either on a 12:12 light-dark photoperiod or in darkness. Nonpheromone macrolides, naturally released in trace amounts byOryzaephilus spp., did not affect the aggregation response of either species to its pheromones when these additional macrolides were combined with the pheromone mixtures.

The most prominent beetle-produced volatiles identified in the abdominal extracts of maleDryocoetes confusus Swaine after they had bored for 24 hr in logs of subalpine fir,Abies lasiocarpa (Hook.) Nutt. were:exo andendo-brevicomin,trans-verbenol, verbenone, myrtenol,trans-pinocarveol,cis- andtrans-p-menthen-7-ol, 3-caren-10-ol, and several monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes. Myrtenol was the only conspicuous compound in extracts from males that had been exposed toA.lasiocarpa resin volatiles for 24 hr. Laboratory bioassays indicated that both (-)- and (+)-exo-brevicomin were attractive to femaleD. confusus, and that the (-) enantiomer did not inhibit response to its antipode. Results from field trapping experiments indicated that bothero-brevicomin and myrtenol are aggregation pheromones forD. confusus.exo-Brevicomin baits were effective in causing attack byD. confusus on baited and surrounding trees, suggesting that this pheromone may have utility in manipulating populations of the beetle.

When feeding on rolled oats, male square-necked grain beetles,Cathartus quadricollis (Guér.), produced the aggregation pheromone (3R,6E)-7-methyl-6-nonen-3-yl acetate, for which the trival name “quadrilure” is proposed. The pheromone was highly attractive to both sexes in a two-choice, pitfall olfactometer modified to retain responding beetles by placing a food stimulus (an oat flake) in the glass vials containing the experimental and control stimuli. TheS enantiomer of the pheromone was inactive. Males also produced small amounts of (E)-7-methyl-6-nonen-3-one, (E)-7-methyl-6-nonen-3-ol, and (6E)-7-methyl-3-propyl-2,6-nonadienyl acetate, but these compounds were inactive in the laboratory bioassay. Segregated males and females both produced (R)-(-)-1-octen-3-ol, which by itself was repellent to both sexes but did not diminish beetle response to the aggregation pheromone.

Males of five sympatric species of economically damaging cucujid grain beetles,Cryptolestes ferrugineus (Stephens),C. pusillus (Schönhen),C. turcicus (Grouvelle),Oryzaephilus mercator (Fauvel), andO. surinamensis (L.), produce macrolide aggregation pheromones especially in the presence of food. Work leading to the isolation, identification, and establishment of biological activity of these semiochemicals is reviewed. The trivial name “cucujolide” is proposed and used to identify these compounds that are characteristic of the Cucujidae. The twoOryzaephilus share species share a common cucujolide pheromone, whileCryptolestes species use cucujolides that are either enantiomeric, unique to the genus, or released in trace quantities byOryzaephilus spp. and not used as pheromones by the latter species. The major mechanisms for species specificity in chemical communication are: (1) presence of a unique pheromone (C. ferrugineus andC. pusillus); (2) use of pheromones that are inactive alone but synergize response to cucujolides unique to a species (C. pusillus, C. turcicus, andO. surinamensis); (3) response to only one enantiomer of a pheromone (C. ferrugineus, O. surinamensis, andO. mercator); and (4) synergism between enantiomers of a pheromone (C. turcicus). The only species for which cross-attraction was evident wasO. mercator toO. surinamensis. Both sexes ofOryzaephilus spp. produce (R)-1-octen-3-ol, which highly synergizes response to the cucujolide pheromones. Similar synergism occurs between hexanal, octanal, and nonanal and the cucujolide pheromones ofOryzaephilus spp. The males of a sixth cucujid species,Cathartus quadricollis (Guér) produce a different aggregation pheromone, (3R,6E)-7-methyl-6-nonen-3-yl acetate. Trapping ofCryptolestes andOryzaephilus spp. in cardboard traps baited with pheromones is efficient in environments mimicking food-storage areas. Pheromone-baited plastic probe traps are the most efficient at capturing these species in infested grain.

Two biologically active macrolides were isolated from Porapak Q-captured beetle and frass volatiles ofCryptolestes turcicus (Grouvelle) and identified spectroscopically as (Z,Z)-5,8-tetradecadien-13-olide (I) and (Z)-5-tetradecen-13-olide (II). Natural I was active alone and was synergized by inactive II. The pheromones were male-produced but attractive to both sexes. Pheromone production increased dramatically when insects were aerated on a food source. Pure (R)- and (S)-I were inactive, but mixtures of (R)- and (S)-I were active, the first reported instance of enantiomeric synergism in the Cucujidae.

Aggregation pheromones were isolated fromCryptolestes pusillus (Schönherr), a coleopteran pest of stored products. Porapak Q-captured beetle and frass volatiles were fractionated by preparative gas-liquid chromatography. The fractions were bioassayed with an arena olfactometer and/or with a two-choice, pitfall olfactometer. Three biologically active, male-produced compounds eliciting aggregation behavior from adultC. pusillus were isolated and identified by spectroscopic methods as (Z)-3-dodecenolide (I), (Z)-5-tetradecen-13-olide (II), and (Z,Z)-3,6-dodecadienolide (III). Compound I was the major volatile produced and was active alone. Compound II was not active alone, but synergized the response to I. Compound III was active alone at higher concentrations, but did not significantly increase the response when added to the most active mixture of I and II, and so it is probably not part of the aggregation pheromone. Pheromone production increased dramatically when the insects were aerated on a food source.

Volatile components ofAllium cepa L, trapped in and recovered from Porapak Q, were separated by gas-liquid and thin-layer chromatography. Fractions eliciting oviposition fromHylemya antiqua (Meigen) were analyzed by combined gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS) and were found to contain saturated and unsaturated disulfides. Authentic samples of the identified components were obtained by synthesis and tested for oviposition response byH.antiqua. Three new attractants and oviposition stimulants forH. antiqua are methyl propyl disulfide,cis-propenyl propyl disulfide, andtrans-propenyl propyl disulfide. All were present in greater proportion in the volatiles from fresh onions than from stored onions. Dimethyl disulfide, methylcis-propenyl disulfide, and methyltrans-propenyl disulfide did not elicit significant oviposition fromH. antiqua.

An oviposition bioassay for the onion maggot,Hylemya antiqua (Meigen), is described in which females, in response to volatile stimulants, oviposit through small apertures onto moistened filter paper. Onion volatiles that act as attractants and oviposition stimulants were captured in Porapak Q from air passed over chopped onions in glass chambers. Pentane extracts from odor-impregnated Porapak Q induced ~ 30–50% of the oviposition that occurred in response to 15-g onion-slice stimuli. Extracts presented in pentane on waxed dental cotton wicks induced more constant oviposition over a 3-day period than extracts on unwaxed wicks. Extract of the Porapak Q-captured volatiles from bulbs of fresh, actively growing onions elicited a much stronger response than did stem and leaf extracts from the same onions. The bioassay techniques and chemical procedures developed in this study could be used in chemical isolation programs for host attractants or oviposition stimulants forH. antiqua or similar species.

Chemotherapy-related nausea and vomiting (NV) in 300 consecutive patients treated in community practices prior to the availability of 5-HT3antiemetics (9/87 to 1/91) were compared with NV in a second sample of 300 patients treated after their commercial introduction (9/93 to 2/95). Eighty-six percent of the later patients received 5-HT3antiemetics, and significantly fewer (43.3%) reported one or more episodes of posttreatment vomiting during their first four cycles of chemotherapy compared with those in the previous sample (55.0%: P< .01). Identical numbers of both groups (79.3%) reported at least one episode of posttreatment nausea. A significant increase in the average duration of both posttreatment nausea (from 28.1 h to 37.2 h;P= 0.001) and posttreatment vomiting (from 10.9 h–16.5 h, P= .02) was found; no significant differences were seen in the reported severity of either symptom. The proportion of patients experiencing at least one episode of anticipatory nausea (31.0% vs 32.0%) or anticipatory vomiting (7.7% vs 6.3%) did not differ significantly (P> 0.5) between groups, nor were there significant differences in the duration or severity of anticipatory symptoms (P> 0.4 for all comparisons). The reduction in the frequency of posttreatment vomiting supports research findings of efficacy. Findings of an increase in duration of posttreatment nausea and emesis and no change in the frequency of posttreatment nausea or in anticipatory symptoms show a continuing need for progress in control of posttreatment emesis and emphasize the need for further research on the control of chemotherapy-induced nausea.

4-Methyl-5-nonanol (1) is the male-produced aggregation pheromone of the palm weevil, Dynamis borassi(F.) from Colombia. The pheromone was identified by coupled gas chromatographic–electroantennographic detection (GC-EAD) analysis of male- and female-produced volatiles, and comparative GC–mass spectrometry (MS) of weevil-produced 1. In field experiments in Colombia, traps baited with a stereoisomeric mixture of synthetic 1(3 mg/day) plus sugarcane captured more weevils than traps baited with 1or sugarcane alone, suggesting that pheromone and plant volatiles are synergistically attractive. Use of a chiral, stereoisomer-separating Cyclodex-B column in GC-EAD and GC-MS analyses revealed that D. borassimales produce, and antennae of males and females respond to (4S,5S)-1. Previously identified palm weevil (Rhynchophorusspp.) aggregation pheromones 5-methyl-4-octanol (cruentol) and 6-methyl-2-hepten-4-ol (rhynchophorol) also elicited antennal responses by D. borassi. In field experiments, D. borassifemales were captured equally well in traps baited with sugarcane plus either 1,cruentol or rhynchophorol. In contrast, D. borassimales were captured most often in traps baited with sugarcane plus 1.Because D. borassiis a potential vector of the red ring nematode that causes the lethal red ring disease of palms, pheromone-based trapping of D. borassicould aid in monitoring or management of red ring disease in commercial palm plantations.

Analysis by gas chromatography (GC) and GC-mass spectroscopy disclosed that droplets of anal fluid produced by second-instar western flower thrips,Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), contain a two-component alarm pheromone, comprised of decyl acetate and dodecyl acetate, in a molar ratio of approximately 1.5:1. Both nymphs and adults responded to the pheromone by walking away from the source. The synthetic pheromone was active at a concentration of 1.0 ng, and the proportions of insects responding to the pheromone, but not the distances moved, increased with increasing dose. Each component was active alone, although at low doses, the response to decyl acetate was less than to either dodecyl acetate or the blend. The pheromone also induced some second instars to drop from leaves and reduced oviposition by adult females in both two-choice and nochoice experiments. Because the response of western flower thrips to the alarm pheromone is relatively weak, the potential for its use in pest management is limited, unless it is used in conjunction with other control measures.

Female Douglas-fir beetles,Dendroctonus pseudotsugae, produced an average 45:55 mixture of the (S)-(-)- and (R)-(+)-enantiomers of 1-methylcyclohex-2-en-1-ol (MCOL). The (S)-(-):(R)-(+) ratio of 3-methylcyclohex-2-en-1-ol (seudenol) produced by this population of females was 34:66. Lindgren funnel traps baited with (R)-(+)-MCOL attracted significantly more males and females than (S)-(-)-MCOL-baited traps, which captured significantly more beetles than unbaited controls. The combined effect of the enantiomers was additive, rather than synergistic. Either enantiomer of MCOL increased catches by frontalin-baited traps. Racemic MCOL can be used for trapping Douglas-fir beetles in south-central British Columbia.

5-Methyl-4-octanol is the major aggregation pheromone of the palmetto weevil,Rhynchophorus cruentatus (F.). The pheromone (cruentol) was identified by coupled gas chromatographic-electroantennographic (GC-EAD) analysis of male-produced volatiles, coupled GC-mass spectrometry (MS) in electron impact and chemical ionization mode, and coupled GC-high resolution MS. In laboratory and field assays, a diastereomeric mixture of synthetic cruentol greatly enhanced attraction of weevils to cabbage palmetto,Sabal palmetto (Walter), stem tissue, indicating that cruentol and host volatiles are synergistically attractive. An attractive lure in combination with efficient traps should facilitate development of semiochemical-based management forR. cruentatus.

Responses by adultOryzaephilus surinamensis (L.) andOryzaephilus mercator (Fauvel) to various food volatiles were assessed by means of a two-choice, pitfall olfactometer. The individual experimental stimuli, all potential products of lipid oxidation, had a range of attractive doses of = 1000-fold over the test dose ranges of 0.001–100 gmg, or 0.01–1000 gmg. Of 13 aliphatic C3-C14 aldehydes and benzaldehyde tested forOryzaephilus spp., 10 C3-C10 aliphatic aldehydes and benzaldehyde showed some attractiveness for both species. ForO. mercator, nonanal had the lowest lower threshold for positive response at 0.01 µg. The addition of small amounts of nonanal or of a 1:1:1 mixture of hexanal, octanal, and nonanal to small amounts of cucujolide aggregation pheromones enhanced response by mixed-sexO. mercator to the pheromones. Eleven aliphatic C2-C9 free fatty acids showed some attractiveness for bothOryzaephilus spp. Isovaleric acid and valeric acid had the lowest lower thresholds for positive response at 0.1 µg forO. mercator andO. surinamensis, respectively. Four olefinic oat volatiles were found to possess various degrees of attractiveness for bothOryzaephilus spp. The data suggest that food volatiles in this study might be used byOryzaephilus spp. as host-finding kairomones in nature.

Volatiles were captured on Porapak Q from foreign grain beetles,Ahasverus advena (Waltl), feeding on rolled oats at various population densities. At low population density, males, females, and mixed-sex beetles four to six weeks posteclosion and older produced 1-octen-3-ol. Mixed-sex beetles emitted almost pure (R)-(-) enantiomer. Weekly production rates of 1-octen-3-ol by males were at least four times greater than those of females. Production of 1-octen-3-ol was barely detectable in volatiles from mixed-sex adults maintained at the highest population density. Laboratory bioassays in a two-choice, pitfall olfactometer modified to retain responding beetles revealed that 1-octen-3-ol serves as an aggregation pheromone forA. advena. Both racemic and chiral 1-octen-3-ols were good attractants for mixed-sex adults in the pitfall olfactometer.

Responses by five species of cucujid grain beetles (mixed-sex adults) to various volatiles were assessed by means of a two-choice, pitfall olfactometer. The test volatiles were short-chain alcohols and ketones known to be produced by fungi. Both racemic and chiral 1-octen-3-ols were strong attractants forCryptolestes ferrugineus (Stephens), as had been found previously forOryzaephilus surinamensis (L.),O. mercator (Fauvel), andAhasverus advena (Waltl). 3-Methylbutanol was another good attractant for these four cucujids, and it was the only test compound to whichCathartus quadricollis (Guér.) responded positively. 1-Octen-3-one, racemic 3-octanol, and 3-octanone showed various degrees of attractiveness for the former four species of cucujids.O. surinamensis was the only species of test beetle to show much positive response to 2-phenylethanol and ethanol. ForO. mercator andO. surinamensis, 3-methylbutanol enhanced positive response to their respective cucujolide aggregation pheromones.

Topical application of the juvenile hormone analog, fenoxycarb, in acetone induced newly emerged male California five-spined ips,Ips paraconfusus Lanier, to become attractive to females, as measured by positive responses to male abdominal extracts in a laboratory bioassay. Two pheromones, ipsdienol and ipsenol, were detected by gas chromatography in the abdominal extracts of fenoxycarb-treated males. Pheromone production was minimal at a dose of 0.1 µg/insect of fenoxycarb, maximal at 10 µg, and was reduced to unmeasurable amounts at a dose of 100 µg. In comparison, peak production of pheromones was induced at a dose of 0.1 µg/insect of natural juvenile hormone (JH III). Treatment with 10 µg of fenoxycarb resulted in the occurrence of pheromones 12 hr after exposure, maximal pheromone content between 16 and 20 hr, and undetectable amounts after 36 hr. The demonstration that fenoxycarb is an active juvenile hormone analog for a bark beetle suggests that it may have practical utility in managing these insects.

Volatiles were found to be distributed throughout adult Douglasfir beetles,Dendroctonus pseudotsugae Hopkins, suggesting that the hindgut may not be the sole site of production. The volatile content of individual beetles increased dramatically with feeding; qualitative changes reflected the different bark habitats of newly emerged and established beetles. All detected volatiles were also found in beetle frass. Myrcene was the predominant monoterpene of emergent beetles and a-pinene of fed beetles. Linalool and bornyl acetate occurred in significant amounts after feeding, and diacetone alcohol and sulcatol were also detected for the first time. The presence of sulcatol explains the reported cross-attraction withGnathotrichus spp.cis-Verbenol was also found to occur in addition totrans-verbenol. The volatile content of male beetles was similar to that of females but amounts of individual compounds were less. Acetic acid was found in both emerged and fed beetles and in lesser amounts in frass, suggesting that microbial metabolism could be a potential source of volatile production.

Mountain pine beetles,Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins, and California five-spined ips,Ips paraconfusus Lanier, were reared axenically from surface-sterilized eggs on aseptic pine phloem. After 24 hr in host logs, axenip femaleD. ponderosae and maleI. paraconfusus produced the aggregation pheromones,trans-verbenol (D. ponderosae), and ipsenol and ipsdienol (I. paraconfusus). Emergent, axenically reared maleD. ponderosae contained normal amounts of the pheromoneexo-brevicomin. Axenic femaleD. ponderosae treated with juvenile hormone or exposed to vapors of a-pinene, produced the pheromonetrans-verbenol. By 25–35 days after eclosion, axenic females exposed to a-pinene vapors produced over six times as muchtrans-verbenol as wild females, suggesting that while microorganisms in wild females may producetrans-verbenol, they may also inhibit production of the pheromone or use it as a substrate.

Male mountain pine beetles,Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins, produced ipsdienol [97.0% ± 0.3S-(+)] and myrcenol (90.3% ± 4.0E) when exposed to myrcene vapors. Females which were exposed to myrcene vapors did not produce any ipsdienol, but did produce low levels of myrcenol (98.0% ± 0.7E). Neither sex produced detectable levels of ipsdienol or myrcenol when fed for 24 hr on lodgepole pine,Pinus contorta var.latifolia Engelmann. The sex-specific conversion of myrcene to ipsdienol and myrcenol suggests that these compounds may have behavioral significance within the species. In addition, the S-(+)-ipsdienol produced by maleD. ponderosae probably functions as a repellent allomone againstIps pini (Say).

Cisplatin was given intravenously to 35 evaluable patients with unresectable malignant mesothelioma on Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG) Study 8418. Five patients (14.3%) achieved partial response with median response duration of six months (range 2–12 months); eleven patients (31.4%) had stable disease of median duration of 5.5. months (range 2–21 months). Median survival for all patients was 7.5 months, 9 months for responders. Toxicity was as expected except that 12 patients (34.2%) discontinued cisplatin because of side effects. Cisplatin has moderate activity in mesothelioma and further studies with platinum analogues should be pursued.

Perspective display techniques can be applied to meteorological data sets to aid in their interpretation. Examples of a perspective display procedure applied to satellite and aircraft visible and infrared image pairs and to stereo cloud-top height analyses are presented. The procedure uses a sophisticated shading algorithm that produces perspective images with greatly improved comprehensibility when compared with the wire-frame perspective displays that have been used in the past. By changing the “eye-point” and “view-point” inputs to the program in a systematic way, movie loops that give the impression of flying over or through the data field have been made. This paper gives examples that show how several kinds of meteorological data fields are more effectively illustrated using the perspective technique.

AbstractField experiments tested lineatin, the aggregation pheromone of Trypodendron lineatum(Olivier), in combination with either S-(+)- or (±)-sulcatol, the pheromones of Gnathotrichus retusus(LeConte) and G. sulcatus(LeConte), respectively. Beetles of each species responded maximally to their own pheromone alone or in a binary combination. Slight, but significant cross attraction between Gnathotrichusspp. was evident, and G. retususwas slightly attracted to lineatin. Both Gnathotrichusspp., but not T. lineatum, responded to a-pinene with ethanol. These two compounds had no effect on the allelochemic activity of the pheromones. While mutually inhibitory communication would be of adaptive advantage in bark beetles which compete for an essentially 2-dimensional host, the phloem tissue, little selection pressure would occur among ambrosia beetles which share a more bountiful host, the 3-dimensional sapwood; hence the lack of mutual inhibition between Gnathotrichusspp. and T. lineatum. On the other hand, enantiomer-based specificity in pheromone communication between Gnathotrichusspp. may have been at least a partial basis for speciation. Compatibility of lineatin with either S-(+)- or (±)-sulcatol indicates that in pheromone-based pest management, 2-binary pheromone stimulus release systems can be used instead of 3 single ones.

Rising CO2can have direct effects on crop water relations and indirect effects on water available for growth. We studied the effects of elevated CO2and drought on leaf water relations of soybean [Glycine max(L.) Merr. cv. Bragg] and considered the hypothesis of osmotic adjustment mediated by increased photosynthesis (Hypothesis 1) vs. the hypothesis of water conservation mediated by decreased stomatal conductance (Hypothesis 2) to explain improved water relations of plants growing under elevated CO2. In Exp. 1, soybean was grown at 330, 450, 660, and 800 μmol mol−1CO2in sunlit, closed‐circulation, controlled‐environment chambers under well‐watered conditions. Leaf total water potential (WP), osmotic potential (OP), and turgor potential (TP) were measured at midday during V4 to R6 stages of development. In Exp. 2 (well‐watered, R1‐R3) and Exp. 3 (13‐d drying cycle, R6 seed filling), soybean was grown at 330 and 660 μmol mol−1CO2, and WP, OP, and TP were measured five times per day on sunlit and shaded leaves. In Exp. 3, stomatal conductance (gs) and transpiration rate (TR) of leaves were also measured. Experiments 1 and 2 showed that elevated CO2increased TP and decreased OP, but did not affect leaf WP, thus favoring Hypothesis 1. In Exp. 3, leaf WP was higher in elevated than ambient CO2. Diurnal TP was higher in elevated than ambient CO2at the beginning of drought, and was maintained longer each day as drought progressed. At the end of drought, TP and WP was higher in elevated than ambient CO2. Elevated CO2leaves had lower TR because of lower gsthan ambient CO2counterparts. Thus, Exp. 3 supported Hypothesis 2, that both stressed and nonstressed plants in elevated CO2have a better water status (e.g., higher TP) than plants in ambient CO2due to water conservation mediated by decreased gs. Remobilization of leaf nutrients during seed filling may limit the capability for osmotic adjustment. Regardless of the mechanisms, growth of plants in elevated CO2should be less affected by drought than plants in ambient CO2.

The incidence and characteristics of ring sideroblastic and megaloblastic changes in bone marrow were studied in chronically ill, malnourished alcoholics and well-nourished alcoholics without complicating medical illness. A clear correlation of blood alcohol level with changes in serum pyridoxal-5-phosphate (PLP) values or with the incidence of ring sideroblasts could not be demonstrated. The appearance of ring sideroblasts was associated with dietary restrictions of pyridoxine and noticeable folic-acid-deficient megaloblastosis. The majority of subjects with ring sideroblasts were from the chronic, malnourished alcoholic group; the number of sideroblasts correlated with severity of marrow megaloblastic change. While low serum PLP levels were characteristic of the chronically ill alcoholic with ring sideroblasts, equally low levels were detected in the absence of the marrow abnormality. Thus, a low serum PLP value alone is not a certain indication of the presence of marrow ring sideroblasts.(Arch Intern Med 136:283-289, 1976)

In one hospital, the test was performed on 1698 patients under hematologic evaluation for erythrocytic abnormalities of all types, while 825 patients from five other hospitals were studied because of suspected B12deficiency. The incidence of low serum vitamin B12was surprisingly low for both groups (2.3% and 3.5%, respectively). The value of the test as a diagnostic tool was further reduced by two characteristics of physician performance. First, with those patients who demonstrated a clear-cut macrocytic anemia and were suspects for intrinsic factor deficiency (pernicious anemia), extensive evaluations for B12malabsorption were usually carried out prior to the receipt of the low B12level. Second, when a deficiency state was not suspected, the return of a low value did not reliably stimulate physicians to begin evaluation or institute therapy. This was true despite the presence of clinical evidence of a possible gastrointestinal abnormality in many of the patients.

The petrochemical industry (PCI) has undergone profound changes during the last decade and is continuing to adjust to changing world economic conditions. One of the most important of these is the price of crude oil. Although an equilibrated pricing structure remains to be demonstrated, anticipated adequacy of supply and versatile, innovative methods of converting crude and natural gas to high valued products assures it a vital and healthy future. The product areas in which the PCI and the oleochemical industry (OCI) overlap are actually quite small in terms of the total capacity. In those limited areas of overlap, we expect the role of the PCI during the next several years to continue to be cone of a complementary nature. By providing security of supply at competitive prices, it will create confidence and reliability which will benefit both the petrochemical and oleochemical industries. And most significantly, the resources of the petrochemical industry will also allow it to respond to new market conditions, particularly those of accelerated volume needs and specific performance, with the flexibility and creativity which have been its hallmarks.

The feeding deterrent activity of fractions from the foliage of western red cedar,Thujaplicata Donn, was studied in laboratory bioassays using the white pine weevil,Pissodes strobi Peck, as a test insect. The most active fraction was the volatile mixture that comprises the leaf oil of this tree species. Further fractionation of the leaf oil indicated feeding deterrent activity in the monoterpene hydrocarbon, thujone, and terpene alcohol fractions. When tested alone, both (-)-3-isothujone and (+)-3-thujone, which made up 75–88% and 5–10% of the leaf oil, respectively, deterred feeding by the weevils. Western red cedar leaf oil also showed antifeedant activity with the alder flea beetle,Altica ambiens (Le Conte), and served as an oviposition deterrent for the onion root maggot,Hylemya antiqua Meigen. The leaf oil, however, had no inhibitory effect on the feeding of the leaf roller,Epinotia solandriana L., and the red-backed sawfly,Eriocampaovata L.

A feeding bioassay forPissodes strobi Peck was developed that consisted of plastic petri dishes containing paired agar disks immersed in paraffin wax. Lens paper covering the top surface of the disks provided 1, 2, or 3 weevils in each replicate with a surface through which they made regular feeding punctures which could be easily counted. The number of feeding punctures was correlated with the amount of agar ingested. Candidate feeding stimulants or deterrents were applied to the paper covering one of the disks in the dishes, while the other served as a solvent control. Feeding stimulants were tested using disks of pure agar, and deterrents were assayed on agar disks that contained 2% ground, dried Sitka spruce bark,Picea sitchensis Carr. The weevils exhibited a concentration-dependent response to the amount of spruce bark in the agar disk. Feeding stimulation by Sitka spruce bark extracts, and deterrency by leaf oil of western red cedar,Thuja plicata Donn, was demonstrated. The bioassay would be useful in chemical isolation programs aimed at identification of feeding stimulants and deterrents.

Two synergistic macrolide aggregation pheromones were isolated from Porapak Q-trapped volatiles obtained from the frass ofCryptolestes ferrugineus (Stephens). These compounds were identified as (E,E)-4,8-dimethyl-4,8-decadien-10-olide (I) and (3Z,11S)-3-dodecen-11-olide (II) and given the trivial names ferrulactone I and II, respectively. Analysis of captured volatiles from separated male and female adults disclosed that the pheromones are male-produced. Additional macrolides were identified in frass volatiles, but were devoid of any pheromonal activity. The structures of I and II were confirmed by comparison with synthetic materials.

Background: Prednisone is an active drug in the treatment of multiple myeloma. The optimal dose, frequency, and role of glucocorticoid receptors (GR) in response to prednisone is unknown.Purpose: The purposes of this study were (1) to estimate the response rate of alternate-day high dose prednisone in patients with relapsing and refractory multiple myeloma; (2) to measure the range of GR levels; and (3) to correlate the response of prednisone with GR status.Patients and methods: Between 8/86 and 1/90, 127 patients were entered onto the study with 121 evaluable for response. The number of GR sites/cell was determined on mononuclear cells isolated from pretreatment bone marrow aspirates using a one point GR binding assay. Patients received prednisone 100 mg po qod x 2 weeks, followed by 50 mg po qod x 10 weeks.Results: The overall response rate was 10% (95% CI: 5–15%) with a median survival of 11.8 months. The GR sites/cell ranged from 0–53,212 with a mean of 8,371 sites/cells. Stratification of GR sites into 0–2,500, 2,501–6,000 and > 6,000 sites/cells was associated with a response rate of 6%, 27% and 4% respectively (p = 0.009). The median survival of patients in these categories was 8.1, 14.9 and 10.6 months respectively. This was not significant by the logrank test (p = 0.11). Although myeloma patients with intermediate levels of GR sites/cell initially responded more favorably to prednisone, their long-term survival was not significantly improved.Conclusions: Alternate-day high-dose prednisone was well tolerated and may provide palliative benefit for a subset of patients with relapsing and refractory multiple myeloma. The survival of patients on this study was comparable to that reported with other but more toxic doses of glucocorticoids.

PurposeWe compare the efficacy of percutaneous nephrostomy with retrograde ureteral catheterization for renal drainage in cases of obstruction and infection associated with ureteral calculi.Materials and MethodsWe randomized 42 consecutive patients presenting with obstructing ureteral calculi and clinical signs of infection (temperature greater than 38C and/or white blood count greater than 17,000/mm.3) to drainage with percutaneous nephrostomy or retrograde ureteral catheterization. Preoperative patient and stone characteristics, procedural parameters, clinical outcomes and costs were assessed for each group.ResultsUrine cultures obtained at drainage were positive in 69.9% of percutaneous nephrostomy and 19.1% of retrograde ureteral catheterization patients. There was no significant difference in the time to treatment between the 2 groups. Procedural and fluoroscopy times were significantly shorter in the retrograde ureteral catheterization (32.7 and 5.1 minutes, respectively) compared with the percutaneous nephrostomy (49.2 and 7.7 minutes, respectively) group. One treatment failure occurred in the percutaneous nephrostomy group, which was successfully salvaged with retrograde ureteral catheterization. Time to normal temperature was 2.3 days in the percutaneous nephrostomy and 2.6 in the retrograde ureteral catheterization group, and time to normal white blood count was 2 days in the percutaneous nephrostomy and 1.7 days in the retrograde ureteral catheterization group (p not significant). Length of stay was 4.5 days in the percutaneous nephrostomy group compared with 3.2 days in the retrograde ureteral catheterization group (p not significant). Cost analysis revealed that retrograde ureteral catheterization was twice as costly as percutaneous nephrostomy.ConclusionsRetrograde ureteral catheterization and percutaneous nephrostomy effectively relieve obstruction and infection due to ureteral calculi. Neither modality demonstrated superiority in promoting a more rapid recovery after drainage. Percutaneous nephrostomy is less costly than retrograde ureteral catheterization. The decision of which mode of drainage to use may be based on logistical factors, surgeon preference and stone characteristics.
