The serum amyloid A protein is one of the major reactants in the acute-phase response. Using representational difference analysis comparing RNA from normal and involuting quarters of a dairy cow mammary gland, we found an mRNA encoding the SAA3 protein (M-SAA3). The M-SAA3 mRNA was localized to restricted populations of bovine mammary epithelial cells (MECs). It was expressed at a moderate level in late pregnancy, at a low level through lactation, was induced early in milk stasis, and expressed at high levels in most MECs during mid to late involution and inflammation/mastitis. The mature M-SAA3 peptide was expressed in Escherichia coli, antibodies made, and shown to have antibacterial activity against E. coli, Streptococcus uberis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. These results suggest that the mammary SAA3 may have a role in protection of the mammary gland during remodelling and infection and possibly in the neonate gastrointestinal tract.

Calcium trifluoroacetate was prepared as its monohydrate Ca(CF3COO)2ċH2O by reaction of CaCO3with an aqueous solution of CF3COOH. It has been established by thermogravimetry and differential thermal analysis that this salt possesses a low thermal stability. When heated in air, decomposition starts already at 106°C, yielding the final product CaF2. Single crystals of Ca(CF3COO)2ċH2O were obtained and found to be monoclinic (space group P21/n); unit cell parameters: a=9.465(2), b=9.360(3), c=16.565(7) Å. Calciumtrifluoracetat wurde durch Reaktion von CaCO3mit einer wäßrigen Lösung von CF3COOH als sein Monohydrat Ca(CF3COO)2ċH2O erhalten. Thermogravimetrische und differentialthermoanalytische Untersuchungen zeigen, daß dieses Salz eine geringe thermische Beständigkeit besitzt. Bei Erhitzen in Gegenwart von Luft beginnt die Zersetzung des Salzes bereits bei 106°C, wobei das Endprodukt CaF2entsteht. Einkristalle von Ca(CF3COO)2ċH2O wurden hergestellt; sie sind monoklin (Raumgruppe P21/n). Parameter der Elementarzelle: a=9.465(2), b=9.360(3), c=16.565(7) Å.

In the title compound, NH4+·C4HO4−·H2O, the hydrogen squarate anions and water molecules are arranged to form planes almost parallel to bc. The ammonium cations are located between these planes and cross‐link them in the adirection by means of an extensive network of hydrogen bonds. There are two symmetry‐independent sets of cations and anions. One of the hydrogen squarate anions and one of the ammonium cations are situated on a twofold axis and the H atoms of these moieties are disordered over the symmetry‐related sites.
