Graphical Abstract:

Microbes are accepted as the foremost drivers of the rhizosphere ecology that influences plant health in direct or indirect ways. In recent years, the rapid development of gene sequencing technology has greatly facilitated the study of plant microbiome structure and function, and various plant-associated microbiomes have been categorized. Additionally, there is growing research interest in plant-disease-related microbes, and some specific microflora beneficial to plant health have been identified. This Review discusses the plant-associated microbiome’s biological control pathways and functions to modulate plant defense against pathogens. How do plant microbiomes enhance plant resistance? How does the plant core microbiome-associated synthetic microbial community (SynCom) improve plant health? This Review further points out the primary need to develop smart agriculture practices using SynComs against plant diseases. Finally, this Review provides ideas for future opportunities in plant disease control and mining new microbial resources.

Photonic crystal (PC) pattern with angle-dependent colors is a promising anti-counterfeiting material as it can show unique visual effects without physical or chemical stimuli. Although various methods have been reported to fabricate PC patterns, few of them offer a complete solution for the fast, low-cost, and mass production of these materials. Here, delicate PC patterns are fabricated by silkscreen printing of photo-curable SiO2/monomer PC inks on the substrate, followed by ultraviolet irradiation to fix the PC structures. The PC inks composed of acrylic, acrylamide, and alkene monomers can be quickly cured in the air. They can also produce PC marks with noticeable angle effects, uniform color distribution, and good mechanical and chemical stabilities. Meanwhile, the silkscreen stencils with different mesh numbers are investigated to achieve the best color intensity and high printing resolution. Finally, as a demonstration of the anti-counterfeiting functions, the as-prepared monochromatic PC pattern changes color with the incident/viewing angle, while the bicolor pattern reversibly switches to a “quasimonochromatic” pattern or is alternately revealed under different angles.

The properties of two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals materials can be tuned through nanostructuring or controlled layer stacking, where interlayer hybridization induces exotic electronic states and transport phenomena. Here we describe a viable approach and underlying mechanism for the assisted self-assembly of twisted layer graphene. The process, which can be implemented in standard chemical vapour deposition growth, is best described by analogy to origami and kirigami with paper. It involves the controlled induction of wrinkle formation in single-layer graphene with subsequent wrinkle folding, tearing and re-growth. Inherent to the process is the formation of intertwined graphene spirals and conversion of the chiral angle of 1D wrinkles into a 2D twist angle of a 3D superlattice. The approach can be extended to other foldable 2D materials and facilitates the production of miniaturized electronic components, including capacitors, resistors, inductors and superconductors.

The BRAF gene is an important signaling molecule in human cells that is involved in the regulation of cell growth, differentiation, and survival. When the BRAF gene mutates, it can lead to abnormal activation of the signaling pathway, which promotes cell proliferation, inhibits cell apoptosis, and ultimately contributes to the occurrence and development of cancer. BRAF mutations are widely present in various cancers, including malignant melanoma, thyroid cancer, colorectal cancer, non-small cell lung cancer, and hairy cell leukemia, among others. BRAF is an important target for the treatment of various solid tumors, and targeted combination therapies, represented by BRAF inhibitors, have become one of the main treatment modalities for a variety of BRAF-mutation-positive solid tumors. Dabrafenib plus trametinib, as the first tumor-agnostic therapy, has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of adult and pediatric patients aged 6 years and older harboring a BRAF V600E mutation with unresectable or metastatic solid tumors that have progressed following prior treatment and who have no satisfactory alternative treatment options. This is also the first time a BRAF/MEK inhibitor combination has been approved for use in pediatric patients. As research into the diagnosis and treatment of BRAF mutations advances, standardizing the detection of BRAF mutations and the clinical application of BRAF inhibitors becomes increasingly important. Therefore, we have established a universal and systematic strategy for diagnosing and treating solid tumors with BRAF mutations. In this expert consensus, we (1) summarize the epidemiology and clinical characteristics of BRAF mutations in different solid tumors, (2) provide recommendations for the selection of genetic testing methods and platforms, and (3) establish a universal strategy for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with solid tumors harboring BRAF mutations.

Magnetic topological insulators (MTIs) have received considerable attention owing to the demonstration of various quantum phenomena, such as the quantum anomalous Hall effect and topological magnetoelectric effect. The intrinsic superlattice-like layered MTIs MnBi2Te4/(Bi2Te3)nhave been extensively investigated mainly through transport measurements; however, a direct investigation of their superlattice-sensitive magnetic behaviors is relatively rare. In this paper, we report a microscopic real-space investigation of the magnetic phase behaviors in MnBi4Te7using cryogenic magnetic force microscopy. The intrinsic robust A-type antiferromagnetic (AFM), surface spin-flip (SSF) + AFM, ferromagnetic (FM) + SSF + AFM, and forced FM phases are sequentially visualized via the increased external magnetic field, consistent with the magnetic behavior in the M–H curve. The temperature-dependent magnetic phase evolution behaviors are further investigated to obtain a complete H–Tphase diagram of MnBi4Te7. Tentative local phase manipulation via the stray field of the magnetic tip is demonstrated by transforming the AFM into the FM phase in the surface layers of MnBi4Te7. Our study provides key real-space ingredients for understanding the complicated magnetic, electronic, and topological properties of such intrinsic MTIs and suggests new directions for manipulating spin textures and locally controlling their exotic properties.

Strain engineering plays a crucial role in controlling the physical properties of two-dimensional (2D) materials. However, the mechanical behavior of stressed 2D crystals has not been fully understood. In this study, the fracture behavior and accompanying properties of a strained single-crystal monolayer WS2of submicron scale were investigated using a theoretical–experimental joint study. After thermal strain, the WS2monolayer was split into different forms by several cracks, with the cause of the crack formation being studied using finite element analysis (FEA). The cracks were initiated from the vertex of the nucleation center, extending along the stronger von Mises stress isolines and terminating at the edges of the monolayers. Within the separate sections, ripple regions were observed, forming several typical nanopatterns. The band gap, frictional, viscosity, and elasticity characteristics of the different strain regions were also investigated. The nanopattern should enable flexibility in the design of more sophisticated devices based on 2D materials.

Surface ripple, as an important factor of corrugations in two-dimensional (2D) atomic crystals, plays important roles in determining their mechanical and physical properties. Here, we systematically investigated the strain-engineered rippling structure and manipulation of the rippling domain in monolayer WS2flakes viaatomic force microscopy (AFM). The rippling structure was introduced by the in-plane compression applied through the underlying SiO2/Si substrate during the rapid cooling process of post-growth. The zigzag-orientated rippling domains with three-equivalent directions were visualized by transverse shear microscopy (TSM) and friction force microscopy and further determined viaangle-dependent TSM. Furthermore, these rippling domains can be precisely manipulated by controlling the AFM scanning, and various rippling patterns were formed by the AFM lithography. The manipulation mechanisms were phenomenally discussed based on their strain-induced anisotropic mechanical properties, the film–substrate mechanical model, and the dynamic strain-induced anisotropic puckering effects. Our study will be beneficial in understanding and controlling not only the rippling structures but also the rippling-related electronic and optical properties of 2D materials.

Symmetry is highly relevant with various quantities and phenomena in physics. While the translational symmetry breaks at the edges of two-dimensional hexagonal crystalline flakes, it is usually associated with the breaking of central inversion symmetry that is yet to be observed in terms of physical properties. Here, we report an experiment–theory joint study on in-plane compressed single-crystal monolayer WS2flakes. Although the flakes show a hexagonal appearance with a C6symmetry, our density functional theory calculations predict that their in-plane strain, geometric structure, work-function, energy bandgap, and mechanical modulus are nonequivalent among the triangular regions with different edge terminations at the atomic scale, and the flakes exhibit self-patterns with a C3symmetry. Such nonequivalence of physical properties and concomitant self-patterns persist even in a 50 μm-sized monolayer WS2, observed using atomic force microscopy. This indicates that the symmetry arising from the atomic geometry could preserve up to tens of microns for both geometric and properties of the flake, regardless of its mesoscopic geometry, i.e., C6here. Such a detectable mesoscopic scale and symmetric nano- to mesoscale patterns provide promising building blocks for 2D materials and devices and also allow edge terminations of 2D flakes to be directly distinguished.

Colored titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanocrystals have been studied intensively in recent years due to their substantial solar-driven photocatalytic activities. Because of the scarcity of information correlated among atomic structure, electronic structure, and photocatalytic property from isolated nanoparticles, the origin of photocatalytic activity of colored TiO2from microscopic and electronic level remains intensely debated. Here we demonstrated the origin of photocatalytic activity in Ti4+/Ti3+core–shell TiO2nanocrystals mainly by a combination of high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS), and photo-Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM). The thickness of the Ti3+shell layer increases with the annealing temperature, meanwhile the O/Ti atomic ratio of the outermost layer decrease. The differences in interplanar spacing between the surface and the subsurface generate strain effect, which increase carrier mobility and ultimately improve catalytic performance. Quantum size effect and specific surface area also have a big impact on catalytic performance. A prerequisite is to keep a good balance between the Ti4+/Ti3+core–shell structure and the particle size to optimize its photocatalytic properties. By employing Au as a reference, we were able to estimate the Fermi levels of TiO2before and after illumination. The amplitude of the Fermi level upshift unambiguously relates with the photocatalytic activity. The largest Fermi level upshift under illumination means generating the most efficient photoinduced carries to perform a highly catalytic reaction, carried out by optimizing the electronic structure with appropriate oxygen vacancies. But too many oxygen vacancies increase the recombination center and reduce the concentration of photoinduced electrons, which can also be observed from the photo-KPFM result.

Carbonaceous materials are biocompatible and ecofriendly catalysts for an advanced oxidation process (AOP) in the treatment of wastewater, but their activity is not satisfactory compared to that of the conventional metal and oxide catalysts. Here, dimer heterostructures of ZnO and Ni,N-codoped carbon (NiNC) are found to possess greatly improved activity in a photoassisted AOP reaction. In the synthesis of the composite of ZnO and ZIF-8, the adding sequence of Ni(NO3)2and 2-methylimidazole can guide the formation of ZnO@NiZIF and ZnO–NiZIF particles, which are further converted to a core–shell particle of ZnO and NiNC (ZnO@NiNC) and a dimer particle of ZnO and NiNC (ZnO–NiNC) by calcination in N2. Although these two particles have many similar physicochemical properties, the ZnO–NiNC dimer particles show greatly enhanced activity for degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) under UV–vis illumination, where its reaction constant is 43 times of its own in the dark and 13 times higher than that of ZnO@NiNC under the same condition. A group of experiments reveal a synergistic mechanism for the ZnO–NiNC catalyst under illumination, in which the photoelectrons directionally migrate toward the exposed ZnO/NiNC interface and react with potassium peroxymonosulfate to produce more-reactive hydroxyl and persulfate radicals to accelerate the AOP reaction.

NixCoy/H-ZrO2catalysts composed of highly dispersed NixCoynanoparticles supported by mesoporous ZrO2hollow sphere are synthesized by templating and impregnation processes. According to thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and dry reforming results, a synergetic reaction mechanism is proposed to explain the better performance of alloy catalysts compared to Ni/H-ZrO2or Co/H-ZrO2. In dry reforming of methane (DRM) reaction, Ni and Co act as catalysts for CH4cracking and CO2reduction, respectively, and the induced carbon deposits on Ni can be oxidized by the active oxygen left on Co, which regenerate the metal surface for the following reaction. Among all the alloy catalysts, the Ni0.8Co0.2/H-ZrO2catalyst presents the highest activity and stability because the strong metal–support interaction prevents the sintering of nanocatalysts at high temperature and the hollow structure enhances the mass transportation of reactants and products. More importantly, Ni and Co can synergistically balance the speed of CH4cracking and CO2reduction, which effectively avoid coke accumulation/catalyst oxidation and ensure fast and stable conversion for DRM reaction.

Previously, we demonstrated that death-associated protein-3 (DAP3) loss drives chemoresistance in gastric cancer cells. In the present study, we aimed to determine the underlying molecular mechanism. The effect of DAP3 silencing on ß-catenin signaling was assessed. The direct mediator of DAP3 silencing-induced chemoresistance was identified. Depletion of DAP3 stimulates nuclear accumulation of ß-catenin and enhances ß-catenin-dependent transcriptional activity in gastric cancer cells. However, the protein kinase B,, extracellular regulated protein kinase and signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 signaling pathways remain unaffected by DAP3 loss. We found that the downstream target gene LGR5 (leucine-rich G-protein coupled receptor 5) is upregulated in DAP3-depleted gastric cancer cells. Moreover, knockdown of LGR5 resensitizes DAP3-depleted gastric cancer cells to 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and oxaliplatin. We also observed that ectopic expression of LGR5 reduces apoptosis in gastric cancer cells on treatment with 5-FU and oxaliplatin, which is accompanied by prevention of caspase-3 cleavage. The antiapoptotic protein Bcl-2 is identified as a key mediator of LGR5-induced apoptosis resistance in gastric cancer cells. The present findings indicate that DAP3 deficiency-induced chemoresistance in gastric cancer is at least partially mediated through the ß-catenin/LGR5/Bcl-2 axis. Targeting LGR5 may provide a novel strategy to overcome chemoresistance in DAP3-deficient gastric cancer cells.

Monodisperse ZnO particles with adjustable size have been produced on a large scale by two-step seeding-growth polyol reactions. Through spin coating of supersaturated ZnO/diethylene glycol solution and evaporation of solvent, opaline ZnO photonic crystal (PC) film with good crystallinity and uniform photonic structures can be prepared from these ZnO particles. Compared with a disorderly stacked ZnO film, the ZnO PC film shows a higher activity in photocatalytic reduction of CO2due to the generated slow photons at the edge of the photonic band gap and their promotion to the light absorption. When the electronic band gap of ZnO matches the red edge of the photonic band gap of ZnO PC, the enhancement factor of photocatalytic activity represented by CO evolution can be maximized to 2.64-fold in the current experiment. Compared to the traditional inverse opal photocatalysts, the opaline ZnO photocatalysts are prepared by simplified and scalable procedures, and they still possess the same enhancement in activity compared to ZnO without the photonic structure, which might be broadly used in solar energy utilization, environment protection, and many other green chemical processes in the future.

The introduction of photonic crystals (PC) to semiconductors, which usually appear in the form of inverse opal materials, has been proved to be an effective way to enhance the photocatalytic activity, but their enhancement factor is merely two- to fourfold in most previous reports. In this work, a supported thin-film photocatalyst (CdS/SiO2-ETPTA), as a new PC-based catalyst system, is prepared for hydrogen evolution under visible light, which presents an 6.4- to 8.8-fold activity compared to the same CdS quantum dots deposited on a non-PC film. This substantial enhancement originates from the high reflectivity of PCs and absorption of reflected light by CdS, whose absorption edge exactly matches the stopband of PCs. Compared to the traditional inverse opal photocatalysts, the PC-supported photocatalyst possesses many advantages including simplified procedures in synthesis, a substantial enhancement of activity, flexible modification with mature thin-film techniques, good stability, and easy regeneration in reaction.

In laboratories, core cannot always be cut exactly along the axis of symmetry (normal to the bedding plane), which leads to a minor core cutting rotation (CCR) error. The presence of a small CCR error can give rise to an error in computation of anisotropic parameters, which will result in erroneous P-wave and S-wave velocities (VP, VSVand VSH). In this study, we test the sensitivity of Thomson’s anisotropic parameters, epsilon (ε), gamma (γ) and delta (δ), to the CCR error. In the vertical transverse isotropy (VTI) system where no rotation exists, values of ε, γand δwill not vary with azimuth. Similarly, in VTI the values of VP, VSVand VSH, measured at orientations with respect to the axis of symmetry, will also not vary with azimuth. We modelled and analysed the error generated, in anisotropic parameters and phase velocities, due to rotation error of 5° on VTI ANNIE model data, and the Niobrara Shale core sample measurements. For these two cases, we obtained values of P-wave and S-wave velocities along with anisotropy parameters ε, γand δ, at 0°, 45° and 90° orientations with respect to the axis of symmetry, before and after a rotation of 5°, for different azimuth directions. This study shows that, when the CCR error exists, ε, γand δvary with azimuth. For Niobrara Shale samples, we observed that, among all three Thomsen’s parameters δis the most sensitive parameter to the CCR error; when we varied azimuth, we observed a sign change of δfrom positive to negative. For εand γ, variation in azimuth lead to only slight changes in values without any change of sign. The CCR error affects VPand Vsmeasurements the most at 45° orientation, and the least at 90° orientation. The maximum error occurred at 0° azimuth, whereas the minimum error occurs at 90° azimuth. This analysis suggests that, if core cutting rotation exists, phase velocities should be measured at 90° azimuth for accurate results.

Copper oxides have attracted great attention in oxidation of CO due to its high activity at low temperature. In this work, uniform Cu2O nanospheres were synthesized through a high-temperature polyol process, and they were further transformed into a series of Cu2O–CuO nanosphere catalysts with a tunable Cu2+/Cu+ratio by controlled calcination in air. On the basis of the study of surface composition and the corresponding catalytic activities, a synergetic catalytic mechanism was proposed where CO adsorbed on CuO is oxidized into CO2by lattice oxygen of CuO, and O2molecules adsorbed on Cu2O split into oxygen adatoms and transfer to fill the oxygen vacancies on CuO. The synergetic mechanism explains well the high activity and good stability of the Cu2O–CuO catalyst as well as the self-activation effect of uncalcined catalysts.

Hybrid nanoparticles have intrinsic advantages to achieve better activity in photocatalysis compared to single-component materials, as it can synergistically combine functional components, which promote light absorption, charge transportation, surface reaction, and catalyst regeneration. Through functional modular assembly, a rational and stepwise approach has been developed to construct Fe3O4–CdS–Au trimer nanoparticles and its derivatives as magnetically separable catalysts for photothermo-catalytic hydrogen evolution from water. In a typical step-by-step synthetic process, Fe3O4–Ag dimers, Fe3O4–Ag2S dimers, Fe3O4–CdS dimers, and Fe3O4–CdS–Au trimers were synthesized by seeding growth, sulfuration, ion exchange, and in situ reduction consequently. Following the same reaction route, a series of derivative trimer nanoparticles with alternative semiconductor and metal were obtained for water-reduction reaction. The experimental results show that the semiconductor acts as an active component for photocatalysis, the metal nanoparticle acts as a cocatalyst for enhancement of charge separation, and the Fe3O4component helps in the convenient separation of catalysts in magnetic field and improves photocatalytic activity under near-infrared illumination due to photothermic effect.

As a unique 2D magnetic material with self-intercalated structure, Cr5Te8exhibits many intriguing magnetic properties. While its ferromagnetism of Cr5Te8has been previously reported, the research on its magnetic domain remains unexplored. Herein, we have successfully fabricated 2D Cr5Te8nanosheets with controlled thickness and lateral size by chemical vapor deposition (CVD). Then magnetic property measurement system revealed Cr5Te8nanosheets exhibiting intense out-of-plane ferromagnetism with a Curie temperature (TC) of 176 K. Significantly, we reported for the first time two magnetic domains: magnetic bubbles and thickness-dependent maze-like magnetic domains in our Cr5Te8nanosheets by cryogenic magnetic force microscopy (MFM). The domain width of the maze-like magnetic domains increases rapidly with decreasing sample thickness; meanwhile, the domain contrast decreases. This indicates the dominant role of ferromagnetism shifts from dipolar interactions to magnetic anisotropy. Our research not only establishes a pathway for the controllable growth of 2D magnetic materials but also points toward novel avenues for regulating magnetic phases and methodically tuning domain characteristics.

The hydrothermal synthesis method was adopted to prepare a highly active Ga2O3–Al2O3catalyst (GA-HS), which displayed superior catalytic performance for dehydrogenation of propane to propylene in the presence of CO2(DHP-CO2). The highest propane conversion on GA-HS was 35.2%, which was much higher than that from the catalysts prepared using the grind-mixture method (8.7%) or coprecipitation method (26.2%). Moreover, propylene selectivity over the GA-HS catalyst was higher than that over the other catalysts in a period of 9 h of reaction. These catalysts were characterized by N2physical adsorption, ICP-AES, XRD, TGA, TEM, SEM, DRIFT, Py-FTIR, NH3-TPD, XPS, 27Al MAS NMR and 71Ga MAS NMR techniques. The characterization data indicated that the hydrothermal treatment increased the surface area, expanded the pore size and promoted the formation of more tetrahedral Ga ions and the generation of more medium-strong Lewis acid sites. Furthermore, this catalyst mainly displayed an amorphous sponge-like morphology as well as a new morphology whereby some pieces were covered with amorphous nanoparticles. The superior activity of GA-HS was attributed to the higher surface area of this catalyst and the larger amount of tetrahedral Ga ions (Ga3+and probably Gaδ+δ< 2) related to the medium-strong Lewis acid sites.

The objective of this study was to investigate whether surface coating with graphene could enhance the surface bioactivation of PET-based artificial ligaments to accelerate graft-to-bone healing after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. In an in vitro study, the proliferation of MC3T3-E1 cells and their differentiation on the scaffolds were quantified via 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide and real-time polymerase chain reaction assays. The significantly higher optical-density values and transcription levels of osteoblast-specific genes indicated that graphene modification could promote the proliferation of MC3T3-E1 cells and accelerate their specific differentiation into osteogenic lineages on scaffolds. In an in vivo test, rabbits were used to establish an extra-articular graft-to-bone healing model. At 4, 8, and 12 weeks after surgery, biomechanical tests, microcomputed tomography analysis, and histological observations were performed. The final results demonstrated that the microstructural parameters, the average mineral apposition rate of the bone, and the biomechanical properties of the graphene-coated polyethylene terephthalate (PET)-based artificial ligament (G-PET-AL) group were significantly higher than those of the PET-AL graft group (P< 0.05). The results of Van Gieson staining indicated that in the G-PET-AL group, there was more newly formed bone than there was in the group in which nongraphene-coated PET-ALs were used. In conclusion, graphene exhibits considerable potential for enhancing the surface bioactivation of materials.

Abstract: Alloy 600 was studied in different acidic environments with three approaches including Tafel curve method, linear polarization method and AC impedance curve. Experimental results showed that there was greatest corrosion velocity when pH was 4 for preventing film factor; and it was possibly caused by elements corrosion dissolving with different proportional compared with Alloy 600 metallurgical contents.

Alloy 600 was studied in NaCl solution for its pitting corrosion behavior in this paper. According to Tafel polarization, impedance analysis, specimen morphological analysis and metal dissolving analysis by AAS, there must be selective de-alloy corrosion happened in localized concentrated environment; corrosion velocity reaches maximum when Cl- concentration was 100mmol/L.

•The World Gastroenterology Organisation-acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF) classification covers all conditions of basic liver disease in hepatitis B virus (HBV)-ACLF patients.•Our study demonstrated the clinical utility and predictive value of the types of HBV-ACLF.•We have established a model of ACLF prognosis based on the type HBV-ACLF.
