- Abstract
A liberal, one of the pillars of capitalism in the Russian Empire, financial angel of the Moscow Art Theater, and friend of Maxim Gorky — this was Savva Timofeevich Morozov on the eve of the Revolution of 1905. Regrettably, the literature contains no rounded characterization of him. Morozov's participation in the social and political activities of the liberal bourgeoisie has been examined in a number of writings by V. Ia. Laverychev. (1) Morozov left a significant trail in other people's memoirs. Gorky wrote a sketch devoted to him, in 1922. (2) He also referred to Morozov in his literary portraits of L. B. Krasin (3) and the merchant N. A. Bugrov. (4) Morozov also served as a prototype for many of Gorky's literary characters ("the patron of the revolution," Liutov, in The Life of Klim Samgin [Zhizn' Klima Samgina], the Artamonovs, Egor Bulychov). (5) The writer S. T. Grigor'ev expressed the desire that Gorky write a book about this uncommon individual. (6)
