- Abstract
Epidemiological evidence suggests adherence to vegetable-rich diets is associated to atheroprotective effects and bioactive components are most likely to play a relevant role. The notion of inter-kingdom regulation has opened a new research paradigm and perhaps microRNAs (miRNAs) from edible vegetables could influence consumer gene expression and lead to biological effects. We aimed to investigate the potential impact of broccoli-derived miRNAs on cellular cholesterol efflux in vitro.

This research examines the influence of studying Non-Language Areas (NLA) subjects in a Foreign Language (FL) during pre-university education on three key factors: students' Foreign Language Competence (FLC), their perception of the FL training received during their Primary Education Degree (PED), and their intention to teach Physical Education (PE) in a FL in the future. A targeted sample of 160 students pursuing a PED was surveyed using a purposeful non-random questionnaire. The findings reveal a positive correlation between studying these subjects and enhanced FLC, both perceived and certified. Additionally, students exhibit a more favorable attitude towards the FL training in their PED and the prospect of teaching PE in a FL. Despite existing challenges in Bilingual Education (BE) program implementation at national and regional levels, exposure to NLA subjects in a FL in pre-university education yields positive outcomes in these areas. - Abstract
• VRBT improves functional capacity, pulmonary function, and functional mobility skills in patients with COPD. • No differences in improving functional capacity were found between applying VRBT alone or in combination. • To combine non-immersive VRBT plus PR may be more adequate for increasing functional mobility skills. • Non-immersive VRBT is the VR modality most used in PR. In addition to conventional pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) programs for the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), the use of virtual reality-based therapy (VRBT) has been proposed as an effective complementary tool to be included in PR programs for COPD. To analyze the effectiveness of VRBT on functional capacity, pulmonary function, and functional mobility in patients with COPD. A meta-analysis was carried out through a bibliographic search in PubMed (Medline), WOS, PEDro, CINAHL, CENTRAL, and Scopus since inception up to June 2023. The risk of bias was assessed using the PEDro scale, and the effect was determined using the standardized mean difference (SMD) and its 95 % confidence interval (95 % CI) in a random effects model. Five RCTs, providing data from 344 participants with a mean age 65.7 ± 5.3 years old, were included. The mean methodological quality of the studies included was good (6.8 ± 1.6 points). The meta-analysis showed that VRBT was effective in increasing functional capacity, assessed with the 6 Min Walking Test, (SMD=0.4, 95 % CI 0.07 to 0.71, p = 0.017); pulmonary function, assessed with FEV1 (SMD=0.33, 95 %CI 0.01 to 0.65, p = 0.048); and functional mobility, assessed with the Get Up and Go Test (SMD=0.77, 95 % CI 0.5 to 1.1, p <0.001) in patients with COPD. VRBT is suggested to be effective in increasing functional capacity, pulmonary function, and functional mobility in patients with COPD. Non-immersive VRBT is the most used modality of VRBT in PR. - Abstract
Purpose To demonstrate that intense pulsed light therapy (IPL) of the upper and lower eyelids with meibomian gland expression (MGX) is effective in improving dry eye disease due to meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD).Methods Patients with ocular discomfort (Ocular Surface Disease Index -OSDI- above 13) and signs of MGD were recruited. All patients underwent OSDI, visual acuity (VA), intraocular pressure, Schirmer test, meibography, non-invasive tear breakup time (NITBUT), slit-lamp examination (corneal and conjunctival staining, hyperemia, gland expressibility, and meibum quality), tear osmolarity and lipid layer thickness. IPL was performed with Optima IPL (Lumenis Ltd.) following a standardized protocol on upper and lower eyelids of both eyes, with inferior eyelid MGX. Patients received four sessions separated by two weeks each. Four weeks after, examinations were repeated. Results 160 patients (320 eyes) were included, of which 108 (67.5%) were women and mean age was 59.2 ± 15.08 (range 20–89). After four sessions, VA, OSDI, tear osmolarity, lipid layer thickness, NITBUT, hyperemia, corneal and conjunctival staining, gland expressibility, meibum quality, inferior eyelid Meiboscore and Schirmer test improved (all, p < 0.027). Changes in OSDI, initial and average NITBUT increased with dry eye disease severity (according to OSDI). Increased pre-treatment OSDI, hyperemia, corneal and conjunctival staining and Schirmer test were associated with an improvement in OSDI (all, p < 0.040). No adverse events were noted. Conclusions The combination of IPL on upper and lower eyelids with MGX is safe and effective for the treatment of MGD. Patients with severe dry eye disease present greater improvements.

- Abstract
In a 2-yr study on prevalence of Haemosporidia in an avian community in Ithaca, New York, USA, we tested the hypothesis that apparent seasonal variation in prevalence is influenced by the detection protocol. We confirmed a higher detection of Haemosporidia using a molecular diagnosis technique (PCR) than by microscopy; this further increased when the PCR test was triplicated. Microscopic examination and PCR techniques have different specificity and sensitivity and therefore different probabilities of detecting hemoparasites. Birds with chronic infections or sampled during winter often have very low parasitemia, and such infections may be missed by microscopy but detected by PCR. Haemosporidian prevalence was higher during the breeding season than during the nonbreeding season regardless of the method used. Detection of Leucocytozoon spp. infection from blood smears using microscopy was challenging. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
ABSTRACTIntroductionKv1.3 is the main voltage-gated potassium channel of leukocytes from both the innate and adaptive immune systems. Channel function is required for common processes such as Ca2+signaling but also for cell-specific events. In this context, alterations in Kv1.3 are associated with multiple immune disorders. Excessive channel activity correlates with numerous autoimmune diseases, while reduced currents result in increased cancer prevalence and immunodeficiencies.Areas coveredThis review offers a general view of the role of Kv1.3 in every type of leukocyte. Moreover, diseases stemming from dysregulations of the channel are detailed, as well as current advances in their therapeutic research.Expert opinionKv1.3 arises as a potential immune target in a variety of diseases. Several lines of research focused on channel modulation have yielded positive results. However, among the great variety of specific channel blockers, only one has reached clinical trials. Future investigations should focus on developing simpler administration routes for channel inhibitors to facilitate their entrance into clinical trials. Prospective Kv1.3-based treatments will ensure powerful therapies while minimizing undesired side effects.

- Abstract
Knowledge graphs are often constructed from heterogeneous data sources, using declarative rules that map them to a target ontology and materializing them into RDF. When these data sources are large, the materialization of the entire knowledge graph may be computationally expensive and not suitable for those cases where a rapid materialization is required. In this work, we propose an approach to overcome this limitation, based on the novel concept of mapping partitions. Mapping partitions are defined as groups of mapping rules that generate disjoint subsets of the knowledge graph. Each of these groups can be processed separately, reducing the total amount of memory and execution time required by the materialization process. We have included this optimization in our materialization engine Morph-KGC, and we have evaluated it over three different benchmarks. Our experimental results show that, compared with state-of-the-art techniques, the use of mapping partitions in Morph-KGC presents the following advantages: (i) it decreases significantly the time required for materialization, (ii) it reduces the maximum peak of memory used, and (iii) it scales to data sizes that other engines are not capable of processing currently.

- Abstract
ABSTRACTThis paper presents the evaluation of the statistical reliability of micro-flotation experiments using a Hallimond flotation cell. The study was conducted by three experimental analysts using different micro-flotation conditions and samples. Statistical analysis of 20 micro-flotation experiments was performed. Using the Kolmogorov–Smirnov test, the data from all experiments were found to come from a normal distribution. The coefficient of variation ranged from 0.5% to 8.2%. The high variability was mainly justified by the poor reproducibility of the bubble size distribution; this was corroborated by the high deviation of the estimated mean bubble size in the experiments, which was 742 ± 249 µm. A frequency histogram showed that although extreme values up to 21.3% could appear, 70% of the experiments had coefficient of variation less than 4%. The Asymptotic Test and the Modified Signed-likelihood Ratio Test showed that there were not statistically significant differences between the variability of the 20 micro-flotation experiments. The overall confidence interval for the coefficient of variation from 2.2% to 4.5% was established. The coefficient of variation tended to decrease when the repetitions of the micro-flotation experiments increased. The main source of variability of the micro-flotation experiments conducted in the Hallimond cell is the repeatability of the method.

- Abstract
BackgroundIn proximal occlusions, the effect of reperfusion therapies may differ between slow or fast progressors. We investigated the effect of intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) (with alteplase) plus mechanical thrombectomy (MT) versus thrombectomy alone among slow versus fast stroke progressors.MethodsThe SWIFT-DIRECT trial data were analyzed: 408 patients randomized to IVT+MT or MT alone. Infarct growth speed was defined by the number of points of decay in the initial Alberta Stroke Program Early CT Score (ASPECTS) divided by the onset-to-imaging time. The primary endpoint was 3-month functional independence (modified Rankin scale 0–2). In the primary analysis, the study population was dichotomized into slow and fast progressors using median infarct growth velocity. Secondary analysis was also conducted using quartiles of ASPECTS decay.ResultsWe included 376 patients: 191 IVT+MT, 185 MT alone; median age 73 years (IQR 65–81); median initial National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) 17 (IQR 13–20). The median infarct growth velocity was 1.2 points/hour. Overall, we did not observe a significant interaction between the infarct growth speed and the allocation to either randomization group on the odds of favourable outcome (P=0.68). In the IVT+MT group, odds of any intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) were significantly lower in slow progressors (22.8% vs 36.4%; OR 0.52, 95% CI 0.27 to 0.98) and higher among fast progressors (49.4% vs 26.8%; OR 2.62, 95% CI 1.42 to 4.82) (P value for interaction <0.001). Similar results were observed in secondary analyses.ConclusionIn this SWIFT-DIRECT subanalysis, we did not find evidence for a significant interaction of the velocity of infarct growth on the odds of favourable outcome according to treatment by MT alone or combined IVT+MT. However, prior IVT was associated with significantly reduced occurrence of any ICH among slow progressors whereas this was increased in fast progressors.

- Abstract
Purpose: This study aims to delve into the interplay between didactic audiovisual translation (DAT) and computer-assisted language learning (CALL), exploring their combined impact on the development of intercultural competence (IC) among learners of English as a foreign language (EFL). Design/methodology/approach: Using a quasi-experimental approach with a quantitative research design, the study analyses the outcomes of a questionnaire answered by 147 students across 15 language centres in Spanish Universities. These participants actively engaged in completing the lesson plans of the Traducción audiovisual como recurso didáctico en el aprendizaje de lenguas extranjeras project, a Spanish-Government funded research initiative aimed at assessing the effects of DAT on language learning. Findings: The current study confirms the reliability of the instrument developed to measure students’ perceived improvement. Beyond validating the research tool, the findings of the current study confirm the significant improvement in intercultural learning achieved through DAT, effectively enhancing students’ motivation to engage in language learning. Research limitations/implications: The current research solely examines students enrolled in higher education language centres. This paper closes with a CALL for additional research, including participants from other educational stages, such as primary or secondary education. In the broader context of CALL research, this study serves as a valuable contribution by exploring the potential of DAT in fostering IC in EFL settings. Originality/value: This research confirms the potential of DAT and CALL to promote students’ learning process, as the combination of these approaches not only yields linguistic benefits but also intercultural learning.

- Abstract
Burnout and engagement in health students surpass work life. Although levels of burnout in Nursing students are high, academic engagement is an understudied topic in Nursing, which has shown benefits. The aims were to know the level of engagement of Nursing students and to identify factors that prompt higher levels of engagement. An exploratory study was conducted during 2019 in three Universities in Spain. The UWES-S-17 questionnaire was used. The sample consisted of 808 Nursing students. An average level of engagement was found. Engagement differed significantly by gender and age, with females and older students showing greater attitudes. Participants in the second year showed lower scores in the willingness to dedicate effort and persistence than those in the first and third year (p < 0.05). The identification of the level of engagement and factors involved are an opportunity to probe into this approach by reinforcing positive attitudes in Nursing students. These findings show the need to seek strategies through specific educational interventions and policies. Engagement should be upheld throughout the degree and once they enter the job market to ensure the well-being during academic and future work life, a high-quality nursing care and patient safety. • The identification of engagement and factors involved are essential to understand this phenomenon in higher education. • There is a need to seek strategies that enhance Nursing students' engagement through specific policies and interventions. • Engagement should be upheld throughout the degree and once they enter the job market to ensure well-being. - Abstract

- Abstract
• A greater probability of a non-dipping pattern of blood pressure is observed in patients with drug-resistant mesial temporal lobe epilepsy. • These patients present with carotid intima-media thickness alterations more frequently. • The non-dipping pattern may be a factor involved in the increased cardiovascular risk observed in patients with epilepsy. To determine whether patients with drug-resistant mesial temporal lobe epilepsy present with an alteration in the autonomic circadian regulation of blood pressure. A prospective case‒control study was designed, with a case group comprising patients with drug-resistant mesial temporal lobe epilepsy and a control group comprising healthy volunteers. Twenty-four-hour outpatient blood pressure monitoring was performed to assess the existence of a normal (dipping) or altered (non-dipping) circadian pattern. In addition, analytical and ultrasound parameters (carotid intima-media thickness) of vascular risk and sleep quality were evaluated. Twenty-four subjects were recruited in each study group, amongst whom no demographic differences or history of vascular risk were observed. A higher percentage of participants with a non-dipping pattern was observed in the group of patients with epilepsy (62.5% vs. 12.5, p = 0.001). In the case group, significant differences were also observed in carotid intima-media thickness, with a greater probability of presenting with pathological values (p = 0.022). The results suggest a disorder of the central autonomic control of blood pressure in patients with drug-resistant mesial temporal lobe epilepsy, with a greater probability of developing an alteration of the circadian rhythm of blood pressure. This dysfunction may be a factor involved in the increased cardiovascular risk in this population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In 2020, the Conference of Chemical Engineering Directors and Deans (CODDIQ) proposed the creation of an observatory to monitor chemical engineering degrees in Spain. This representative radiography of Chemical Engineering studies offers an initial point to observe the future changes when Royal Decree 822/2021 and proposed challenges in the last Ministerial Conference on the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) will be implanted. The survey data from CODDIQ partners allow us to know important data such as (i) the 24 international quality accreditations at Spanish universities, (ii) the high demand and the required marks, an average of 7.25, for the Chemical Engineering Bachelor's degree, (iii) 9560 undergraduate students in this degree in Spain and their gender profile which is around 43% of women, similar than women lectures, (iv) the difficulty of this Bachelor's degree through some indicators like duration of studies (5.25 years), graduation rate (41%) and drop-out rate (26%), (v) the employability after obtaining the Bachelor's degree is very high (>70%). In addition, Chemical engineering undergraduate and graduate students indicate their expectations are covered. In this paper, some consequences of the pandemic on students' performance (lower than before COVID-19) are analyzed, despite lectures tried to innovate in their classes and the university provided adequate tools for online teaching. • Chemical Engineering Bachelor's degree in Spain is in high demand. • Quality indicators show the current situation of chemical engineering degree. • Chemical Engineering students are satisfied with their degree and their employability. • The gender profile is adequate because woman students and lecturers are around 43%. • The pandemic affected students' performance despite university efforts. FINCHES ,MYCOPLASMA gallisepticum ,CONJUNCTIVITIS ,MYCOPLASMA ,DISEASE prevalence ,BIRDHOUSES ,EPIDEMICS - Abstract
Ever since 1994, when the bacterial pathogen Mycoplasma gallisepticum jumped from poultry to wild birds, it has been assumed that the primary host species of this pathogen in wild North American birds was the house finch (Haemorhous mexicanus), in which disease prevalence was higher than in any other bird species. Here we tested two hypotheses to explain a recent increase in disease prevalence in purple finches (Haemorhous purpureus) around Ithaca, New York. Hypothesis 1 is that, as M. gallisepticum evolved and became more virulent, it has also become better adapted to other finches. If this is correct, early isolates of M. gallisepticum should cause less-severe eye lesions in purple finches than in house finches, while more-recent isolates should cause eye lesions of similar severity in the two species. Hypothesis 2 is that, as house finch abundance declined following the M. gallisepticum epidemic, purple finches around Ithaca increased in abundance relative to house finches and purple finches are thus more frequently exposed to M. gallisepticum-infected house finches. This would then lead to an increase in M. gallisepticum prevalence in purple finches. Following an experimental infection with an early and a more-recent M. gallisepticum isolate, eye lesions in purple finches were more severe than in house finches. This did not a support Hypothesis 1; similarly, an analysis of Project Feeder Watch data collected around Ithaca did not show differences in changes in purple and house finches' abundance since 2006, a result which does not support Hypothesis 2. We conclude that purple finch populations will, unlike those of house finches, not suffer a severe decline because of a M. gallisepticum epidemic. - Abstract
Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) causes COVID-19, by infecting cells via the interaction of its spike protein (S) with the primary cell receptor angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE2). To search for inhibitors of this key step in viral infection, we screened an in-house library of multivalent tryptophan derivatives. Using VSV-S pseudoparticles, we identified compound 2as a potent entry inhibitor lacking cellular toxicity. Chemical optimization of 2rendered compounds 63and 65, which also potently inhibited genuine SARS-CoV-2 cell entry. Thermofluor and microscale thermophoresis studies revealed their binding to S and to its isolated receptor binding domain (RBD), interfering with the interaction with ACE2. High-resolution cryoelectron microscopy structure of S, free or bound to 2, shed light on cell entry inhibition mechanisms by these compounds. Overall, this work identifies and characterizes a new class of SARS-CoV-2 entry inhibitors with clear potential for preventing and/or fighting COVID-19.

- Abstract
IMPORTANCE: ApTOLL is a TLR4 antagonist with proven preclinical neuroprotective effect and a safe profile in healthy volunteers. OBJECTIVE: To assess the safety and efficacy of ApTOLL in combination with endovascular treatment (EVT) for patients with ischemic stroke. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This phase 1b/2a, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study was conducted at 15 sites in Spain and France from 2020 to 2022. Participants included patients aged 18 to 90 years who had ischemic stroke due to large vessel occlusion and were seen within 6 hours after stroke onset; other criteria were an Alberta Stroke Program Early CT Score of 6 to 10, estimated infarct core volume on baseline computed tomography perfusion of 5 to 70 mL, and the intention to undergo EVT. During the study period, 4174 patients underwent EVT. INTERVENTIONS: In phase 1b, 0.025, 0.05, 0.1, or 0.2 mg/kg of ApTOLL or placebo; in phase 2a, 0.05 or 0.2 mg/kg of ApTOLL or placebo; and in both phases, treatment with EVT and intravenous thrombolysis if indicated. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: The primary end point was the safety of ApTOLL based on death, symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage (sICH), malignant stroke, and recurrent stroke. Secondary efficacy end points included final infarct volume (via MRI at 72 hours), NIHSS score at 72 hours, and disability at 90 days (modified Rankin Scale [mRS] score). RESULTS: In phase Ib, 32 patients were allocated evenly to the 4 dose groups. After phase 1b was completed with no safety concerns, 2 doses were selected for phase 2a; these 119 patients were randomized to receive ApTOLL, 0.05 mg/kg (n = 36); ApTOLL, 0.2 mg/kg (n = 36), or placebo (n = 47) in a 1:1:√2 ratio. The pooled population of 139 patients had a mean (SD) age of 70 (12) years, 81 patients (58%) were male, and 58 (42%) were female. The primary end point occurred in 16 of 55 patients (29%) receiving placebo (10 deaths [18.2%], 4 sICH [7.3%], 4 malignant strokes [7.3%], and 2 recurrent strokes [3.6%]); in 15 of 42 patients (36%) receiving ApTOLL, 0.05 mg/kg (11 deaths [26.2%], 3 sICH [7.2%], 2 malignant strokes [4.8%], and 2 recurrent strokes [4.8%]); and in 6 of 42 patients (14%) receiving ApTOLL, 0.2 mg/kg (2 deaths [4.8%], 2 sICH [4.8%], and 3 recurrent strokes [7.1%]). ApTOLL, 0.2 mg/kg, was associated with lower NIHSS score at 72 hours (mean difference log-transformed vs placebo, −45%; 95% CI, −67% to −10%), smaller final infarct volume (mean difference log-transformed vs placebo, −42%; 95% CI, −66% to 1%), and lower degrees of disability at 90 days (common odds ratio for a better outcome vs placebo, 2.44; 95% CI, 1.76 to 5.00). CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: In acute ischemic stroke, 0.2 mg/kg of ApTOLL administered within 6 hours of onset in combination with EVT was safe and associated with a potential meaningful clinical effect, reducing mortality and disability at 90 days compared with placebo. These preliminary findings await confirmation from larger pivotal trials. TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT04734548

Significant international forums and programmes, particularly the 2016 United Nations Conference Habitat III and the Horizon Europe, emphasise the need to address heritage management planning in cities from a comprehensive and inclusive perspective in balance with environmental issues. Accordingly, this research develops cross-cutting, alternative, and sustainable strategies for the design of a management process for municipal heritage assets in historical cities, which have been implemented in the city of Seville (the Management Plan for Heritage Municipal Buildings of Seville). This plan, finally approved in 2022, involves 130 symbolic buildings of which one third are either under-utilised or abandoned. The research focuses on the design of the developed methodology and presents the resulting 9 management programmes with 30 action lines created for the organisation of these heritage sites into a comprehensive system. Seville's municipal built heritage plan implies the involvement of academics and researchers from a wide range of disciplines, public agents, and local actors who can guarantee a sustainable process and integrated governance in the future. In conclusion, the research shows an innovative design process for cultural heritage management based on the premise that such buildings are resources for contemporary local development and for a better quality of life.
