We have proposed and developed e‐Tile for wall decoration and ornaments for interior/exterior. A prototype of 2 m x 2 m large energy‐saving reflective panel was realized by arraying 400 e‐Tiles on a flat plane. Prototypes of cubic displays were also realized by constructing e‐Tiles to cubic shape. Artistic display effects and 3D impression could be found in these cubic prototypes. We hope e‐Tile is a promising solution to extend the application field of e‐Paper to decorative use including architectural applications.

Dual screen e‐Paper is expected to be useful when creating documents using reference documents. This study evaluated performances of referencing conditions using paper, e‐Paper, and LCD and suggested that the working conditions using dual screen e‐Paper brought almost the same performance as the working conditions using paper as a reference.

“e‐Tile” is introduced as a novel concept for large area displays. A typical e‐Tile configuration, in which 100 pixels are mounted on a 100 mm square board, is designed and practically prototyped. Assuming a relatively large pixel size on the electronic tile, the relationship between the viewing distance and the impression of image quality was studied by calculations and subjective evaluations.

One promising application is an unobtrusive information board, which is far less annoying than the conventional vivid LED/LCD in public spaces.

We have proposed a volumetric 3D display in which cross-sectional images are projected on a rotating helical screen. One of challenges of this method is an existence of invisible regions generated depending on observation angle. Invisible region is determined as the sum of dark region as a result of oblique incidence of the projected light on the screen and blind region as a result of blocking light paths to the viewpoint by the screen body. The larger invisible region was shown against the higher viewpoint to the helical screen. It was also shown that invisible region mainly located in the distant side from the viewpoint and in the neighboring region to the rotation axis of the screen. Our evaluation results show that the cylindrical display volume provided by a helical screen offers enough visible region at the viewpoint side and the periphery: indispensable regions for 3D displays.

We have evaluated performances and subjective impressions of paper, LCD tablet, and e‐Paper during study tasks of reading and writing on each medium. Paper showed general superiority in correct answer rate, processing speed, and most of subjective impression. It should also be noted that e‐Paper showed better correct answer rate than tablet.

The development of electronic paper, which has the merits of both paper and electronic displays, is being eagerly pursued. Aim and category of electronic paper is first introduced in this report, and then trends of developments and applications are overviewed. The technological level of electronic paper has already been reaching at practical level as a reading device for monochrome displaying. American market has been rapidly growing for electronic book with electronic paper technology since the end of 2007. A field trial of e-paper proceeding at an international conference was conducted in Japan in 2008. Electronic papers is now expected to replace printed matters in near future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
