- Abstract
Background: Calcineurin, a protein involved in functions such as synaptic plasticity and neuronal survival, plays an important role in the pathophysiology of Alzheimer's disease. This study, randomized, investigated the effects of FK506 (FK), a calcineurin inhibitor, on the behavioral, histological, and biochemical alterations observed in models of neurotoxicity induced by NMDA or Aβ and in a transgenic model for AD, in addition to the organotypic culture model stimulated with NMDA. Methods: This study involved models for AD to experiment injecting NMDA or Aβ1‐42 into the hippocampus of male C57Bl/6 mice aged 8‐12 weeks to induce a neurotoxicity model, treating double‐transgenic APP/PS1 mice, expressing both mouse/human APP and mutant human PS1, with chronic FK506 for AD, in which, to enable NMDA or Aβ1‐42 microinjections, another experiment including a stereotaxic surgery was performed on the C57Bl/6 mice. FK506 doses and the pre‐treatment time were chosen based on prior related studies and its ability to cross the BBB. To obtain organotypic cultures, animals aged between 1 and 3 days were used. Their hippocampi were dissected in an ice‐cold culture and then stimulated with NMDA, which is neurotoxic, or PBS, having previously been inserted into a medium containing FK506 or a negative control. In addition, the microglia depletor clodronate disodium was added to the hippocampal slices. The exploratory open field task, the elevated plus maze (LCE), the interaction test (IS) and social memory and ORT were used to evaluate behavior. To complement the results, real‐time quantitative PCR and a statistical analysis of the data were carried out. Results: FK506 played a protective role in cognitive impairment in both in vivo models and reduced FJC labeling and microgliosis in the Aβ model. FK506 also prevented the reduction of NeuN, a mature neuron marker, expression in organotypic cultures stimulated with NMDA. Furthermore, chronic treatment with FK506 protected against the behavioral alterations observed in LCE and IS. In addition, FK506 reduced microgliosis in the hippocampus of APP/PS1 animals. Conclusion: Together, these results demonstrate the protective potential of FK506 against the pathology observed in AD models. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The present study evaluated the chemical composition of the leaf essential oil of Myrcia loranthifoliafrom Atlantic Forest and Dry Forest of Brazil. The oil showed a mean yield of 0.23 to 0.33%. From 26 to 32 compounds were identified by GC–MS depending on the geographical origin of the plant. (E)–Caryophyllene (47.80%) and germacrene D (10.07%) predominated in the oil of samples from the Atlantic Forest. In Dry Forest, the main constituent identified in the oil was also (E)–caryophyllene, but it was detected in a lower concentration (15.59%). Cis–calamenene (11.40%), the second major constituent found in the oil of plants from Dry Forest, was not identified in samples from the Atlantic Forest. The qualitative and quantitative differences found may be due to local abiotic factors or inherent to genetic characteristics of the plants. The essential oil of M. loranthifoliaconstitutes one of the largest sources of (E)–caryophyllene yet unexplored.

- Abstract
Tarenaya longicarpais a tropical species popularly known in several regions of Brazil as “mussambê”. The wide distribution in Brazil and other countries makes the study of the lipid metabolism of this species under different climatic situations relevant. To our knowledge, no studies focused on the seed lipids or the influence of environmental parameters on the oil content and fatty acid profile of T. longicarpahave been developed. Thus, the present study has the purpose of conducting this investigation. The results showed that the oil content of T. longicarpaseeds varied from 15.4 to 42.9% among the three studied sites and between the dry and rainy seasons. Ten fatty acids were identified in the seed oil of the species, with linoleic acid being the main one (39.5–41.9%). The result of the Pearson correlation analysis showed that the content of palmitic (21.3–26.2%) and oleic acids (18.3–27.2%) was strongly influenced by temperature, but in an inverse manner (r= 0.964 and r= −0.957, respectively). Linoleic acid did not show significant correlation with any of the registered climatic parameters. The PCA analysis showed that temperature was the most influent climatic factor affecting the fatty acid profile of the studied species. The potential use of T. longicarpaseeds as a source of linoleic and oleic acids is highlighted.

- Abstract
Background: The phytocannabinoid cannabidiol (CBD) has previously shown to have anticonvulsant effects in preclinical and clinical studies. Recently, CBD has been approved to treat certain types of drug-resistant epileptic syndromes. However, the underlying mechanism of action remains unclear. The phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) signaling pathway has been proposed to modulate seizures and might be recruited by CBD. Thus, we tested the hypothesis that the anticonvulsant effect of CBD involves PI3K in a seizure model induced by pentylenetetrazole (PTZ). Methods: We employed pharmacological and genetic approaches to inhibit PI3K and quantified its effects on seizure duration, latency, and number. Results: PI3K genetic ablation increased the duration and number of seizures. CBD inhibited PTZ-induced seizures in mice. Genetic deletion of PI3K or pretreatment with the selective inhibitor LY294002 prevented CBD effects. Conclusion: Our data strengthen the hypothesis that the CBD anticonvulsant effect requires the PI3K signaling pathway.

This study aimed to develop a prototype of the GISSA Mother-Baby ChatBot Application (GCBMB), a conversational agent to promote child health and evaluate the experience of use and satisfaction with this technological solution. This is a two-stage cross-sectional research with a mixed methodology. The first stage develops the settings of dialogue and the GCBMB prototype. The second stage evaluates the experience of using the ChatBot through a structured questionnaire where statements are used to assess the respondent's level of agreement using the Likert Scale and analyzes the application's use path through its database. The sample consisted of 142 puerperae, with a mean age of 25.4 years, where 38.1% were primiparous. The level of agreement of women with simplicity, good quality of information, clarity of content, usefulness, and satisfaction with the application was above 90%. Women between 26 and 30 years of age had a higher mean number of hits (5.21), settings accessed (9.26), and usage time (272 seconds) comparing younger and older women. The use of ChatBots on smartphones is encouraging to promote the health of children in Brazil. However, more investments are required to improve technological solutions and research with robust methodologies to evaluate their effectiveness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Multiple organ dysfunction is the most severe outcome of sepsis progression and is highly correlated with a worse prognosis. Excessive neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) are critical players in the development of organ failure during sepsis. Therefore, interventions targeting NET release would likely effectively prevent NET-based organ injury associated with this disease. Herein, we demonstrate that the pore-forming protein gasdermin D (GSDMD) is active in neutrophils from septic humans and mice and plays a crucial role in NET release. Inhibition of GSDMD with disulfiram or genic deletion abrogated NET formation, reducing multiple organ dysfunction and sepsis lethality. Mechanistically, we demonstrate that during sepsis, activation of the caspase-11/GSDMD pathway controls NET release by neutrophils during sepsis. In summary, our findings uncover a novel therapeutic use for disulfiram and suggest that GSDMD is a therapeutic target to improve sepsis treatment.

- Abstract
Background: Major depressive disorder (MDD) affects millions of people worldwide. While the exact pathogenesis is yet to be elucidated, the role of neuro-immune signaling has recently emerged. Despite major advances in pharmacotherapy, antidepressant use is marred by limited efficacy and potential side effects. Cannabidiol (CBD), a phytocannabinoid, exerts antidepressant-like effects in experimental animals. This study investigated the impact of CBD on sickness behavior (SB), a measure of depressive-like response, and neuro-immune changes induced by lipopolysaccharides (LPS) in mice. Methods: Socially isolated rodents were administered with LPS to trigger SB. and treated with CBD or its vehicle. Animals were submitted to forced swimming test, to evaluate depressive-like behavior, and to open field test, to evaluate locomotory activity. Immediately after behavioral analyses, animals were euthanized and had their hypothalamus, prefrontal cortex and hippocampus dissected, to proceed neurotrophins and cytokines analyses. ELISA was used to detect IL-1β, BDNF and NGF; and cytometric beads array to measure IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IFN-γ, TNF-α and IL-10 levels. Results: CBD effectively prevented SB-induced changes in the forced swim test without altering spontaneous locomotion. This phytocannabinoid also partially reversed LPS-evoked IL-6 increase in both the hypothalamus and hippocampus. In addition, CBD prevented endotoxin-induced increase in BDNF and NGF levels in the hippocampus of SB animals. Conclusions: Apparently, CBD prevents both behavioral and neuro-immunological changes associated with LPS-induced SB, which reinforces its potential use as an antidepressant which modulates neuroinflammation. This opens up potentially new therapeutic avenues in MDD.

- Abstract
The development of aluminum (Al)‐tolerant cultivars is a complementary strategy to overcome the constraints caused by Al toxicity on acid soils and can contribute positively to the food supply for the growing global population. A major Al tolerance quantitative trait locus in maize is controlled by a citrate transporter encoded by ZmMATE1. Our goal was to evaluate the impact of the superior allele of ZmMATE1on the yield performance of maize lines and hybrids cultivated on acid soils. Near‐isogenic lines carrying the superior allele of ZmMATE1, and the recurrent Al‐sensitive parent were crossed with elite lines, generating near‐isogenic hybrids contrasting for these alleles. All maize genotypes carrying this superior allele were more Al tolerant in nutrient solution than their isogenic counterparts having the ZmMATE1allele derived from the Al‐sensitive parent. These genotypes were cultivated in control and Al stress soils for 2 yr. Aluminum toxicity caused a significant yield reduction of 18.7% for lines and 14.7% for hybrids over the 2 yr. The yield performance of maize genotypes declined in the second year compared with the first year, probably due to water deficiency after the grain‐filling stage. The superior allele of ZmMATE1in maize hybrids conferred yield gains from 21 to 48% compared with the hybrids harboring the alternative allele in the Al stress soil in the first and second years, respectively. As this superior allele is rare in maize and is likely absent in several elite germplasms, molecular breeding based on ZmMATE1can improve maize yield stability on acid soils. High Al toxicity on acid soil causes a significant reduction in maize yield. The superior allele of ZmMATE1improves maize yield on acid soil.Yield constraints on acid soil are ameliorated by this ZmMATE1allele in maize hybrids. This ZmMATE1allele is strategic in maize breeding to increase yield stability on acid soils.

The study explores the distribution of AIDS through sociodemographic variables, within the scope of Brazilian social security and social assistance. Twenty-seven federal units were used for data spatialization and analysis. Data were stratified according to gender, age group, area of residence, social welfare membership, type of benefit received and grant method for the beneficiaries. Benefits were classified as social security (71,939, 72.4%), social assistance (26,302, 26.5%) and accident benefits (1,128, 1.1%), a large proportion of which were granted to males (64,654, 65.1%). The unemployed (50,404, 50.7%), who lived in urban areas (96,767, 97.4%), were aged between 20 and 39 years (49,508, 49.8%) and who received benefits based on article 27 of Decree Nº 3048/99 (51,985, 52.3%) were the most incident. The results show that more than half of the benefits granted were for unemployed individuals or those without job stability and, thus, did not contribute to social security for continuous periods. This fact reaffirms the segregation in the labor market to which these individuals are subjected. Also, it is noted that AIDS persists at high levels at the most productive stage of life. Medicinal plants are used in several countries for the treatment of various diseases, including arthritis and osteoarthritis, thus constituting a valuable alternative to commercial drugs. In Brazil, several cultivated plants of economic interest have been indicated for the treatment of rheumatic diseases in ethnobotanical and ethnopharmacological surveys. From this perspective, the present study aimed to review the literature on the anti-arthritic and anti-ostoarthritic potential of plants traditionally used in Brazil. The scientific documents were retrieved from different databases, from the first report published in 1989 until December 2023. A total of 55 species distributed in 31 families are used for the treatment of arthritis and osteoarthritis in different Brazilian states. The species Echinodorus grandiflorus , Pterodon emarginatus , Morinda citrifolia , Uncaria tomentosa , and Miconia albicans stood out for the number of citations. Leaves (41%) are the parts of plants most used in the medicinal preparations. Of the 55 species used by traditional communities, 24 had their anti-arthritic and anti-osteoarthritic activities investigated in preclinical models, and 14 in randomized clinical trials. Phenolic compounds, such as flavonoids, may be directly involved with the reported anti-arthritic and anti-osteoarthritic activity. Many of the species cited in ethnobotanical surveys carried out in Brazil still lack scientific investigations that prove their anti-arthritic effects in preclinical and clinical trials. The exploration of novel phytopharmaceuticals derived from commonly utilized plant raw materials holds the potential to facilitate the establishment of more readily accessible therapeutic alternatives for the general public. [Display omitted] • 31 families and 55 species are traditionally used for the treatment of arthritis and osteoarthritis in Brazil. • Asteraceae and Lamiaceae are widely used in the treatment of arthritis and osteoarthritis in Brazil. • The Brazilian states of Goiás and Mato Grosso had the higher number of ethnomedicinal uses. • 24 species traditionally used in Brazil showed anti-arthritic potential in vivo. • 14 species were evaluated in clinical trials for the treatment of arthritis and osteoarthritis. Species of Cyperaceae occur in all regions of Brazil and have been used in folk medicine in the country, as well as in other parts of the world. From this perspective, the present study aimed to review, for the first time, the folk medicinal use of Cyperaceae species in Brazil, making a distinction between species with and without experimental data available in the literature. Data were obtained from different databases. In the initial search, a total number of 604 publications were retrieved and those that did not meet the search criteria were excluded. A total of 159 articles were selected and used in this review. According to the analysed documents, a total of 27 species of Cyperaceae have reports of folk medicinal use in 15 states of the country. Of these, 44% have been scientifically investigated for chemical constituents and/or biological activities. Sesquiterpenes were the main constituents isolated from different species. The species are used to treat different health problems, especially inflammation, and the roots are the most frequently used parts. Cyperus rotundus is the species with the highest number of medicinal indications and pharmacological and phytochemical studies. Despite the wide spectrum of use of Cyperaceae species, scientific evidence to validate the indications mentioned by traditional communities is lacking for most of them. • Cyperaceae species used in the traditional medicine of Brazil were reviewed. • Twenty-seven species are used as medicine, mainly those of the Cyperus genus. • The Cyperaceae species are indicated mainly for the treatment of inflammation. • Sesquiterpene compounds were the major constituents identified. In this study, the oil content and fatty acid profile of Cynophalla flexuosa seeds from three localities with different climatic characteristics were analyzed. The mean oil content ranged from 16.37% in seeds from coastal area (Restinga ecosystem) to 22.74% in those from two semiarid regions (Caatinga ecosystem). Our initial hypothesis that temperature, precipitation, altitude and salinity would have a significant effect on oil production was not confirmed. The fatty acid profile was predominantly saturated in seeds from Restinga, with a high content of palmitic acid (56.46%). In seeds from Caatinga, palmitic acid (42.89%) and oleic acid (44.22%) were equally predominant. At higher altitudes (e.g. Caatinga), C. flexuosa seeds produced more oleic acid, and at sea level (e.g. Restinga), production of this fatty acid was reduced (22.05%). Cluster (UPGMA) and Principal Component Analyses (PCA) showed that the fatty acid profile of C. flexuosa seeds differed within and between localities and may have been influenced by climatic parameters such as altitude, minimum temperature, and latitude. Although C. flexuosa belongs to Capparaceae, a family close to Brassicaceae, its fatty acid profile was different from those of Capparis spinosa (caper) and Brassica napus (canola), mainly due to the low percentage of linoleic acid (less than 10%). Based on the fatty acid profile, we present potential uses of C. flexuosa seed oil, which may vary according to the origin of the plants. [Display omitted] • The oil profile of Cynophalla flexuosa seeds from three different locations was analyzed. • The oil content ranged from 16.37% (coastal area) to 22.74% (semiarid area). • The fatty acid profile of C. flexuosa differed both within and between the locations. • Palmitic and oleic acids were the major constituents of the seed oil. • The potential applications of C. flexuosa seed oil vary according to the plant's geographical origin. 30. Selective fern herbivory by leaf-cutter ants of Atta cephalotes(L.) in Brazil

- Abstract
Although leaf-cutter ants of the genus Attaare polyphagous, they discriminate between food plant species. Ferns represent the second largest group of vascular plants and are especially abundant in tropical forest understories, but seem to be avoided as food plants. We studied the leaf damage caused by leaf-cutter ants and its relation with water content, trichome density, alkaloids, triterpenoids, and total phenol and nitrogen content of nine fern species occurring in close vicinity to Atta cephalotes(L.) nests from rainforests in Brazil. Meniscium serratumCav. presented the highest leaf damage with 32.3%, three other species had a leaf damage of less than 5%, and the remaining five species were undamaged. Food preferences of leaf-cutter ants were related with higher water content (> 70%), but independent of any other measured variables. Additional observations from Mexico and Costa Rica provided evidence that a larger number of ferns are attacked by leaf-cutter ants. We suggest that highly damaged fern species might serve them as an occasional, short-term, alternative diet when growing close to ant nests, whereas less damaged fern species might have some chemical components harmful for the fungus and detected a posteriori, because they were rejected after initial harvesting by leaf-cutter ants.

- Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the intraocular pressure variation before and after phacoemulsification through pneumatic tonometry in addition to correlating it with the age, gender, and preoperative intraocular pressure of the patients evaluated. Methods: This is a cross-sectional observational study. Inclusion criteria were older than 18 years, deep anterior chamber visualized by the slit lamp and estimation of open angle using the Van Herick technique, intraocular pressure less than 21 mmHg, without surgical complications, and without any ocular disease. The intraocular pressure was measured by the pneumatic tonometer. The intraocular pressure assessment was performed at the last consultation before phacoemulsification surgery and 30 days after. Results: A sample of 182 eyes was used. The mean age was 68.41 ± 10.84 years. Of the patient, 65% were females and 35% were males. The mean intraocular pressure in the preoperative period was 16.0 mmHg (±3.3 mmHg) and the mean intraocular pressure in the postoperative period was 13.44 mmHg (±3.31 mmHg). There was no correlation between intraocular pressure variations in both eyes (age-matched open angle) and age. There was a statistically significant correlation between the preoperative intraocular pressure value and the intraocular pressure changes in the postoperative period. In the comparison of the intraocular pressure variation between the genders, the female gender presented a statistically significant negative variation. Conclusion: We conclude that the cataract surgery is related to the reduction of intraocular pressure in the postoperative period and this reduction is more influenced by its preoperative value. Other studies of high epidemiological impact are needed, which may corroborate that the cataract surgery could directly influence intraocular pressure variation.

- Abstract
Irrigated rice (Oryza sativaL.) is a crop of extreme social and economic importance in Brazil, and the state of Rio Grande do Sul accounts for >70% of the national production. The Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa) is focused on rice breeding, with the aim of developing cultivars with significantly increased grain yield and improved sustainability. The objective of this study was to estimate the genetic progress of 45 yr of the irrigated rice breeding program of Embrapa in Southern Brazil from 1972 to 2016 by conducting a comparative analysis of cultivars in the same environment and by meta‐analysis of line yield assays. The estimates were results from a meta‐analysis obtained by evaluating 455 genotypes in 145 trials of regional line yield and value for cultivation and use of 44 agricultural crop seasons, and by comparing cultivars obtained by evaluating 25 cultivars in 10 agricultural crop seasons. Genetic gains were evaluated for grain yield, plant height, and days to flowering. The cultivars released by the breeding program were also evaluated for important agronomic characters. The genetic estimates determined a genetic progress for grain yield via meta‐analysis and via comparison of cultivars of 0.62 (37.91 kg yr−1) and 0.73% (47.78 kg yr−1), respectively. It was also verified that during the period there was a reduction in plant height and days to flowering. Three distinct historical phases that defined changes in research focus and in genetic gains can be described: (i) 1972 to 1983, before the rice Green Revolution; (ii) 1983 to 2000, after the rice Green Revolution; and (iii) 2000 to 2016, selection intensification for industrial grain quality attributes. Other relevant genetic aspects, selection strategies, and phases of the breeding program were discussed.

- Abstract
Toxoplasma gondiichronic infection is characterized by the establishment of tissue cysts in the brain and increased levels of IFN-γ, which can lead to brain circuitry interference and consequently abnormal behaviour in mice. In this sense, the study presented here sought to investigate the impact of chronic infection by two T. gondiistrains in the brain of infection-resistant mice, as a model for studying the involvement of chronic neuroinflammation with the development of behavioural alterations. For that, male BALB/c mice were divided into three groups: non-infected (Ni), infected with T. gondiiME49 clonal strain (ME49), and infected with TgCkBrRN2 atypical strain (CK2). Mice were monitored for 60 days to establish the chronic infection and then submitted to behavioural assessment. The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used for measurement of specific IgG in the blood and levels of inflammatory cytokines and neurotrophic factors in the brain, and the cell's immunophenotype was determined by multiparametric flow cytometry. Mice infected with ME49 clonal strain displayed hyperlocomotor activity and memory deficit, although no signs of depressive- and/or anxiety-like behaviour were detected; on the other hand, chronic infection with CK2 atypical strain induced anxiety- and depressive-like behaviour. During chronic infection by CK2 atypical strain, mice displayed a higher number of T. gondiibrain tissue cysts and inflammatory infiltrate, composed mainly of CD3+T lymphocytes and Ly6Chiinflammatory monocytes, compared to mice infected with the ME49 clonal strain. Infected mice presented a marked decrease of microglia population compared to non-infected group. Chronic infection with CK2 strain produced elevated levels of IFN-γ and TNF-ɑ in the brain, decreased NGF levels in the prefrontal cortex and striatum, and altered levels of fractalkine (CX3CL1) in the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus. The persistent inflammation and the disturbance in the cerebral homeostasis may contribute to altered behaviour in mice, as the levels of IFN-γ were shown to be correlated with the behavioural parameters assessed here. Considering the high incidence and life-long persistence of T. gondiiinfection, this approach can be considered a suitable model for studying the impact of chronic infections in the brain and how it impacts in behavioural responses.

- Abstract
Objective: The association between high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) with clinical/metabolic variables was evaluated in overweight Brazilian children and adolescents. Study design: Oral glucose tolerance test was performed in 407 students (273 overweight/obese, 11.3 ± 3.1 y). Measurements included body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), blood pressure, lipids, insulin, hs-CRP, and ALT. Overweight/obese was defined using BMI z-score; insulin resistance (IR) by homeostatic model assessment: insulin resistance (HOMA-IR); and metabolic syndrome (MS) in accordance with the modified NCEP-ATPIII. Results: As weight increased, systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), triglycerides (TG), insulin, HOMA-IR, hs-CRP, ALT, ALT, hs-CRP, and AST and the number of MS components (nMSc) also increased (P ≤ .001 for all). Subjects with hs-CRP and ALT above the median had higher BMI z-score, WC, SBP, DBP, TG, AST, insulin, HOMA-IR, and nMSc than those with both markers below the median (P ≤ .002 for all). After adjustment for age, sex and ethnicity, BMI z-score (OR, 1.5; CI, 1.38 to 1.86; P < .001), WC (OR,1.3; CI, 1.19 to 1.43; P < .001) SBP (OR, 1.2; CI, 1.03 to 1.38; P = .015), DBP (OR, 1.4; CI, 1.15 to 1.69; P < .001), TG (OR, 1.8; CI, 1.29 to 2.62; P < .001), insulin (OR, 1.4; CI, 1.23 to 1.71; P < .001), HOMA-IR (OR, 1.2; CI, 1.09 to 1.29; P < .001) and nMSc (OR, 2; CI, 1.16 to 3.47; P = .012) were independently associated with high ALT and hs-CRP. For every 5-cm increase in WC and every 1-point increase in BMI z-score, there were a 1.3- and 1.5-fold greater chance of having increased ALT and hs-CRP, respectively. Conclusions: Simultaneous measurements of ALT and hs-CRP should be considered as a screening test for metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease risk factors in overweight/obese children/adolescents. - Abstract
The purpose of this survey was to describe the occurrence of bovine mastitis caused by Prototheca zopfii in Goiás State, Brazil. Samples of milk, environment and udder were taken from a herd of 120 Holstein cows. Sabourauds dextrose agar plates were incubated under aerobic conditions at 37 °C/96 h, for microbiological analysis. Somatic cell count and milk composition were also determined. Histological sections from two udders were stained with HE and PAS. Prototheca zopfii was identified in six cows whose milk had a watery appearance. They also showed a pronounced decrease in milk yield, fat and lactose. Pronounced infiltration of mononuclear cells, atrophy of alveoli and fibrosis were observed. The presence of this agent in other herds in the State is highly likely.

- Abstract
We investigated the acute effects of thiopental anesthesia (4 mg/100 g, i.v.) on plasma glucose, insulin, triacylglycerol, and prolactin levels in rats treated with bromocriptine (BR) (0.4 mg/100 g body wt, i.p., for two weeks). Thiopental anesthesia induced a rapid increase in plasma insulin that was more pronounced in the animals treated with BR (116%, P<0.05). Thiopental anesthesia also produced a 55% decreased in plasma prolactin levels (P<0.01) in control fed rats, and a 22% reduction in plasma triacylglycerol (P<0.05) in both controls and BR-treated rats. We conclude that BR may constitute and additional sympatholytic factor in animals submitted to thiopental anesthesia.

The objective of this study is to evaluate the effects of physical-chemical and biological variables of the water of the Capibaribe River (state of Pernambuco, Brazil) on leaf anatomy, including ultrastructure and photosynthetic pigment of Salvinia auriculata. Specimens of S. auriculata collected in the Gurjaú River, an area with a low pollution degree, were acclimatized in Hoagland's solution and then subjected to three water samples of the Capibaribe River with different levels of pollution. Twenty-one physical-chemical and biological variables were analyzed according to the Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater. The results showed that the samples of the Capibaribe River presented nine parameters that did not comply with the current Brazilian legislation. After 15 days of bioassay, S. auriculata presented variations in mesophyll and cuticle thickness, changes in trichome morphology and accumulation of phenolic compounds. No significant differences were observed for photosynthetic pigment content and leaf length of S. auriculata. Multivariate analyses (PCA and Cluster) showed that the point in the Capibaribe River with the highest number of variables that do not comply with the current legislation was responsible for major structural and chemical changes observed in S. auriculata. • The impact of water quality on some attributes of Salvinia auriculata was evaluated. • Cuticle, mesophyll and trichomes morphology were affected by aquatic pollution. • Aquatic pollution increased the phenolic compounds in cells. • No significant differences were observed for photosynthetic pigments.
