Background The benefit of performing the Nordic Hamstring Exercise (NHE) on an inclined board has been described, however, isometric hamstring activation in different knee and hip angles has not yet been thoroughly explored. Purpose This study investigated the effect of variations in knee and hip angles during the isometric performance of the NHE on electromyographic activity of the hamstring muscles. Study design Crossover study Methods Thirteen male volunteers performed isometric contractions during the NHE with the knee (30°, 50°, 60°) and the hip (0°, 30°, and 45°) in various angles of flexion on a leg support platform which was inclined at 30°. An electrical goniometer was used to monitor the knee and hip joint angles during 5-s isometric contractions. A multivariate analysis of variance with repeated measures was used to compare normalized electromyographic values of each muscle across different knee and hip angles, followed by pairwise comparisons. Results The electromyographic activity of the biceps femoris, semitendinosus, and semimembranosus at a knee angle of 30° and hip angle of 0° were significantly higher than those observed with a knee angle of 50° and hip angle of 0°, or a knee angle of 60° and hip angle of 0° (p<0.05). The electromyographic activity of the semimembranosus at a knee angle of 60° and hip angle of 45° was significantly higher than values obtained with knee and hip angles of 60° and 0°, respectively (p<0.05). Conclusions The results indicate that using a knee flexion of 30° and a hip flexion of 0°, while isometrically performing the NHE on a platform inclined at 30°, may optimize electromyographic activity of the hamstrings. INTRODUCTION Previous studies have reported a gradual decrease in biceps femoris (BF) electromyography (EMG) activity after the break-point angle (BPA) during the Nordic hamstring exercise (NHE). However, no investigation has been conducted on BF EMG activity before and after BPA as calculated using a smartphone application (Nordic Angle app). HYPOTHESIS/PURPOSE The aim of this study was to investigate the BF EMG activity before and after BPA, as calculated using the Nordic Angle app. The hypotheses were that BF EMG activity would peak near the BPA and gradually diminish afterward. METHODS After a warm-up, participants performed three repetitions of prone leg curls to discern maximum voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) of the hamstrings. The peak value of the BF EMG activity during the prone leg curl was used to convert BF EMG activity during NHE to %MVIC. BPA during NHE was calculated using the Nordic Angle app by analyzing a movie recorded with an iPhone camera. Additionally, the knee flexion angle during NHE was determined using two-dimensional motion analysis software based on video data. To compare EMG activity before and after BPA calculated by the Nordic Angle app, the knee flexion angle was divided into seven phases: 10-15° before BPA, 5-10° before BPA, BPA ± 5°, 5-10° after BPA, 10-15° after BPA, 15-20° after BPA, and 20-25° after BPA. RESULTS There was no significant difference between the BPA of the Nordic angle and the knee flexion angle at peak BF EMG activity (d = 0.13, p = 0.678). The BF EMG activity at 20-25° after BPA was significantly lower than the BF EMG activity at BPA ± 5° (d = 0.87, p = 0.011). CONCLUSIONS To prevent the recurrence of hamstring injuries, it is important to incorporate knee flexion exercises that enhance BF EMG activity at 15-35° of knee flexion (0° indicates a fully extended knee). Thus, it is recommended to keep the BPA of the Nordic Angle within 35° to effectively prevent recurrent hamstring injuries during NHE. Level of evidence 3b [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background A recently developed smartphone application (Nordic Angle) allows the automatic calculation of the break-point angle (BPA) during Nordic hamstring exercise (NHE) without transferring the collected data to a computer. The BPA is the point at which the hamstrings are unable to withstand force. However, the validity of the BPA values obtained by this method has not been examined. Hypothesis/Purpose This study aimed to evaluate the validity and reliability of the Nordic Angle by comparing the BPA values of the Nordic Angle with those of two-dimensional motion analysis software that can calculate the angles and angular velocities of various joints. Study Design Cohort assessing Validity and Reliability Methods The validity of the Nordic Angle BPA data was verified by Spearman's correlation test for consistency with the movement analysis data, and the magnitude of the correlation was indicated by rs. The agreement between these measurements was examined using the Bland-Altman analysis. The reliability of the Nordic Angle and motion analysis was examined using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) (1,k) based on data from repeated trials within a day. Results Although the spearman correlation between the Nordic angle and the angle determined using motion analysis did not reach statistical significance (p = 0.052), a very large correlation was present (rs = 0.75). The difference between the mean values of the Nordic Angle and motion analysis was 0.4 ± 2.1°, and the limits of agreement ranged from -3.9° to 4.6°. In two BPA measurements, the Nordic Angle showed perfect reliability (ICC = 1.00, p < 0.001), while motion analysis showed nearly perfect reliability (ICC = 0.97, p < 0.001). Conclusion The Nordic Angle, which has both validity and reliability, may be appropriate for field measurement because it allows immediate feedback of BPA and the measurement of many athletes. Background Previous studies have shown that performing the Nordic hamstring exercise (NHE) with different board slope angles can affect hamstring activation. However, changes in muscle length with different board slopes can alter joint angles leading to the moment arm (MA) at the knee changing during the NHE. Purpose This study aimed to investigate the influence of changing muscle length on hamstring electromyographic activity during an isometric NHE, while maintaining an equal moment arm. Study Design A crossover study design Methods Sixteen male volunteers performed two types of conventional NHE, one with knees on the floor (NHE) and one with the legs placed upon an incline slope of a lower leg board (NHEB). To compare between the conventional and inclined NHE, the moment arm at the knee was calculated to be equal by an examiner holding the lower legs at points marked at 77% and 94% of the length of the lower leg. The four sub-groups comprised of: 1) NHE-77%, 2) NHE-94%, 3) NHEB-77%, and 4) NHEB-94%. The hamstring EMG activity was measured at the biceps femoris long head (BFlh) and at the semitendinosus (ST) and related compensatory muscles. The RMS data were normalized as a percentage of the maximum isometric values (normalized EMG [nEMG]). Significant main effects findings were followed up with Tukey's post-hoc test using SPSS software and statistical significance was set at the p < 0.05 level. Results The BFlh EMG activity values for NHE-77% were significantly higher than those for NHE-94% (p= 0.036) and NHEB-77% (p < 0.001), respectively, while ST during NHE-77% was significantly higher only in NHEB-77% (p < 0.001). In addition, NHEB-94% was significantly greater than NHEB-77% for both BFlh (p < 0.001) and ST (p < 0.001). Conclusion These results indicate that hamstring electromyographic activity is decreased when the hamstring muscle is lengthened during the Nordic hamstring exercise. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Little is known about the activity of the abdominal internal oblique (IO) and lumbar multifidus (LM) muscles relative to kinetic chain exercises performed in a standing position. Hypothesis/Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the activity of the IO and the LM muscles during weight-bearing exercises. The authors hypothesized that IO and LM muscle activity would vary with lower body positions during the kinetic chain exercises. Methods: Nineteen healthy, young, active subjects volunteered to participate. The electromyographic (EMG) activity (via surface EMG) of the abdominal external oblique (EO), IO, and LM muscles on both sides and the rectus femoris and semitendinosus muscles on the dominant side was determined during rhythmical lower body twisting exercise with three lower body positions: straight leg (SL), athletic position (AP), dynamic knee extension (DE) at two exercise speeds: 150 and 90 beats per min. These were reported as % maximum voluntary contraction. Mean EO, IO, and LM muscle activities were also compared with those of common core stability exercises. Results: IO EMG activity was significantly greater in SL than that of AP (p < 0.05). In contrast, LM EMG activity was significantly greater in the DE position than that of both SL and AP positions (p < 0.05). Conclusion: IO muscle activity could be attenuated by the contraction of lower body extensor muscles during the standing position. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of different foam roller densities on joint range of motion (ROM). Methods: Ten active males completed two, three-day trials in a random order: 1) FR using the medium density foam roller and 2) FR using the hard density foam roller. The 3-day experiential trial consisted of pretest measurement, the Loughborough Intermittent Shuttle Test (LIST), foam rolling (FR), and post-test measurement after the FR at 0 min, 20 min, 60 min, 24 h, and 48 h. All participants performed 2 min of FR on the right hamstrings. The contralateral legs in each trial were used as control values. Results: ROM measured by the passive straight leg raising test on the right leg was higher than on the left leg throughout the experiment (ROM: P=0.006, the change from the LIST for ROM: P=0.036), but no significant difference between foam roller densities was observed. Muscle hardness, muscle soreness, and plasma creatine kinase concentration were not affected using FR. Discussion: Foam rollers have positive effects on recovery of ROM, but there are no significant differences between foam roller densities for recovery of ROM. The mechanism for recovery of ROM could not be concluded in this study, but one of the mechanisms may be an increased stretch tolerance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
