Using the work of Norwegian scholar Johan Galtung, which viewed war and peace journalism as two competing frames in the coverage of a conflict, this is one of the first visual communication studies to empirically test the model via a quantitative content analysis of photographs. The photographs analyzed examined the extent to which the Gaza conflict (2008-2009) was represented as war journalism or peace journalism from three samples of photographs available from the three leading Western newswires services (AP, Reuters & Getty Images). Findings indicated the newswires provided a complimentary role (rather than a competitive one) to communicate a comprehensive coverage of the conflict. This observed pattern put emphasis on the role of gatekeeping in providing a better understanding of war reporting. Further, from a theoretical standpoint this work expanded the classification of war/peace journalism to include various visual components in covering a conflict. ..PAT.-Unpublished Manuscript [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
