1. Ferromagnetic and Surface Spin Wave Resonances in NiFe/Zr Multilayers

Abstract

This work reports a room temperature study on the excitation of surface spin wave resonance (SWR) modes in magnetron sputtered NiFe/Zr multilayers. The surface anisotropy constants and the variations of the magnetization close to the surface of the ferromagnetic (FM) layers are deduced from ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) and SWR measurements at X-Band (9–10 GHz) microwave frequency. The results confirm the inverse dependence of the anisotropy constant and the variation of the magnetization on the thickness of the NiFe layer.

Abstract

There is evidence that the biodistribution and the pharmacokinetics of 99Tcmradiopharmaceuticals can be modified by some drugs, pathological states, irradiation and surgical procedures. Vincristine have been widely used in various chemotherapeutic protocols in oncology. We are trying to develop an animal model to assess the toxicology in different organs of compounds used as therapeutic drugs. We have studied the effect of vincristine on the distribution of 99Tcm-glucoheptonic acid (99Tcm-GHA) in female mice. After the last dose of vincristine, 99Tcm-GHA (7.4 MBq) was injected, the animals sacrificed and the percentage of radioactivity determined in the isolated organs. The percentage of activity was significantly decreased in the uterus, ovary, spleen, thymus, lymph nodes (inguinal and mesenteric), kidney and heart, but was not significantly altered in the lung, liver, pancreas, stomach, thyroid, brain and bone. Our results can be explained by the metabolic, toxic, therapeutic and immunosuppressive actions of this chemotherapeutic drug.

15. Neutron activation analysis of the distribution of inorganic elements among five varieties of Brazilian corn

Abstract

Abstract: Instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) was applied to determine the elements Br, Ca, Cl, Cu, Fe, I, K, Mg, Mn, Na, Rb, S, V, Zn in five varieties of Brazilian corn, resulting from the studies carried out in order to increase their protein contents. The accuracy of the method was evaluated by means of reference material analysis. In general, the precision of the method was lower than 15%, except for Cu, I and S. Sensitivity and detection limit were also determined. Besides, tryptophan contents were determined. It was observed that the tryptophan content in improved corn samples was twice as large as in the normal samples. However, the same ratio was not observed in the inorganic element contents.

1. Ultrastructural analyses of the eggshells of one strain of commercial layers indicated that the cuticular layer is rarely present as an even covering over the shell surface and the paired shell membranes are invariably pitted with holes larger than bacterial dimensions.2. The above conditions pertain irrespective of the age of the laying bird.3. Bacterial penetration of the eggshell is independent of pore numbers.4. In the absence of a functional cuticle and with the shell membranes removed, bacteria are checked in their movement by structural modifications in the mammillary layer.

21. A novel oropharyngeal double lumen cannula for transesophageal echocardiography sedation: a case series.

Abstract

Most of the ambulatory transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) are performed under sedation with anesthetists' accompaniment, and often the patency of the airways is a concern. The main objective of this study was to evaluate a novel oropharyngeal cannula during sedation in a case series of adult patients submitted to ambulatory TEE (Figure 1 - Overview of the oropharyngeal double lumen cannula). After approval by the local ethics committee and obtaining written informed consent, 30 adults patients scheduled to undergo elective ambulatory TEE under sedation were included in the study. Exclusion criteria: Body weight <70kg, emergency procedures, contraindications to elective TEE. Prior to the cannula insertion, all patients received sedation with intravenous Midazolan and bolus doses of Propofol titrated to effect. The cannula was inserted right after loss of consciousness and patient was kept in spontaneous ventilation. We analyzed data of oxygen saturation, capnography, heart rate, noninvasive blood pressure, airways' patency, cannula insertion and comfort to the examiner. Preliminary results: procedures undergone without major complications and without severe hypoxia and hypercarbia events. We observed a better patency of the airway, allowing capnography monitoring and a port to oxygen supply. This new device also protected the TEE probe against accidental bites and an anchorage for the probe during the exam. The novel double lumen oropharyngeal cannula analyzed in this case series was feasible to be used during ambulatory transesophageal echocardiography. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
