The subject of the essay is a metaepistemological reflection of the internal development of naturalistic epistemology. It focuses on the shifts and contrasts between Quine‘s original project of naturalization and recent versions of naturalistic approaches in epistemology. Selected assumptions and consequences of naturalistic thinking are identified and a possibility of future relations between empirical and philosophical aspects of epistemology is suggested. A resemanticization of Anthropology, the scientific study of human culture, is needed as, since the mid-twentieth century, we live in the Information Age. An epoch prioritizing the primacy of information, on a par with matter and/or energy. A new anthropological understanding of the impact of information entails sidestepping the influence on society of particular scientific and technological developments, such as those considered in the Anthropology of Cyberculture or Technology. The goal is to discover the fundamental role of information in anthropology, in its origins and development, as well as in its present-day local and global manifestations. Infoautopoiesis is at the centre of resolving the fundamental problem of information of how we become what we become. This reconceptualization of information, making it accessible to our daily experience, allows its naturalization. Requiring, in our unavoidable homeorhetic recursive interactions with our environment, the finding of individuated meaning in all that surrounds us and of which we are a part. Necessitating all organisms-in-theirenvironment to labour to satisfy their physiological and relational needs. The place and role of Hegel(ianism) in the history of philosophy is a central topic within the historical-philosophical research. It is also the subject matter of Jon Stewart's recent book Hegel's Century. But its focus is on the European, rather than the global story. This paper offers a brief supplement in the form of a North American story, specifically, a narrative of the relationship between Hegelianism and pragmatism. Having covered Hegelian "proto-pragmatism" and pragmatism's (both classical and contemporary) Post-Hegelianism, the author offers his own outline of what he sees as the continuity between the two philosophies. It lies in the common historicism, holism, and syntheticism as well as in a common anti-Cartesianism, anti-Kantianism and anti-Platonism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article focuses on the problem of normativity in Quine’s naturalized epistemology. Quine characterizes his epistemological project mainly in descriptive terms, which seemingly problematizes the normative side of epistemology. Although Quine offers a certain explanation of normativity within his conception, known as “cognitive engineering,” there is a suspicion that he commits a serious logical error, the so-called naturalistic fallacy. Two attitudes can be taken to this suspicion. First, the naturalistic fallacy is indeed present in Quine’s thinking, but it cannot be attributed a negative meaning because it is an inevitable consequence of the naturalization of epistemology. Second, Quine does not commit the naturalistic fallacy because he derives the normativity of epistemology from the “terminal parameter,” i.e. an external goal against which cognitive strategies are assessed. The latter interpretation seems to be in better agreement with Quine’s statements. In this understanding, naturalized normativity has an instrumental character, which ranks it among the tools of instrumental rationality, linked to practical aspects of human activities. The main aim of the study is to analyze key features of Dennett's naturalistic conception of conscious experience. The paper proceeds from the assumption that Dennett's primary intention is the naturalization of consciousness through the so-called "Hard Question": And then what happens? The structure of the text consists of two main levels of Dennett's naturalistic program: a) negative level - rejection of the Cartesian model of consciousness, b) positive level - formulation of the Multiple drafts model. I assume that examining these levels will justify the importance of the Hard Question, thus contributing to a better understanding of Dennett's naturalization of conscious experience. This article discusses health problems due to firearm injuries suffered on duty military police officers in the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro (RJ). Medical records analysis was con ducted referring to military police officers who were treated at the Military Police's Central Hos pital (MPCH) due to gunshot wounds from June 2015 to December 2017 according to professional profile, the characteristics of the event and the le sion, the spatial distribution of the incidents in volving gunshot wounds, and the healthcare units involved in their care. Firearms injured four hun dred seventy-five military police officers: 98.3% were male, 77.3% were in service, 97.9% were soldier personnel. As to the anatomical location of the wounds, the most affected regions were: lower (41.1%) and superior (33.1%) limbs, the head neck-face region (23.5%), and thorax-abdomen (3%). The areas in the metropolitan area of Rio de Janeiro with the highest occurrence of firearm morbidity are program areas 3 and 1 and the Baixada Fluminense. There is a correlation between police morbidity rates due to firearm injuries in the municipalities of the metropolitan region and demographic density (p = 0.024). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Domesticated plants can occasionally naturalize, becoming feral elements of natural communities. This is only possible if crops overcome the abiotic and biotic barriers that restrict their dispersal and recruitment. The naturalization of almond trees (Prunus dulcis, (Mill.) D.A. Webb) was recently reported in SE Spain, but the mechanisms driving it remain to be established. In this study, we begin to elucidate how almonds overcome dispersal and initial establishment limitations, the first steps in feralization. We characterized seed removal and demographic structure in feral Prunus dulcis populations. Additionally, we investigated whether seed burial facilitated germination of almonds under greenhouse conditions. Our results indicate that dispersal by rodents (Apodemus and Rattus) might be an important mechanism favouring almond naturalization in SE Spain. Germination experiments showed that seed burial promotes germination and seedling emergence, suggesting that seed caching might play a beneficial role in recruitment. Lastly, our demographic surveys revealed that recruitment does not seem to be influenced by proximity to the maternal plant. We propose that rodents have a synzoochorous relationship with almonds, promoting their feralization and facilitating their establishment in natural communities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article draws upon the reading of "Western" travelogues from the Ottoman Empire that describe cultural contacts in the early modern era more or less openly in terms of purity and impurity. What does this reading observation mean? It means: whosoever explores concepts of purity and impurity explores an exclusive pattern of meaningfully interpreting the world that serves to convey ambiguity into unambiguity. A pattern that I would like to call a cultural code. The hypothesis of this article is: purity as a cultural code is an invention of the (European) early modern era. Or, expressed slightly differently: it is only in the early modern era that purity becomes the "white ribbon" that points order in the "right" direction. The following fields of inquiry will play a special role here: the victory march of the principle of ethical purity since the late Middle Ages; genesis and raising the profile of confessional cultures; and, not least, naturalization and biologization of lineage. Property rights are central to the concept of citizenship in the liberal state, but in relation to the obvious reality of unequal distribution of resources and material injustice, they also present its most central contradiction. Property rights, as guaranteed by the liberal state, always entail both a right to exclude and to control (the right of dominion), which makes the individual the "sovereign," and a right to alienate, transfer, and contract property (including certain rights connected to possession, distribution, and further contracts). Of course, these latter social or communal aspects (or potentials) of property rights are dependent on the prior right of dominion, without which full control of the communal dimension of property would be impossible. Yet without the social--contractual--dimension, the right to property would be quite useless in a capitalist system of production, and it is in this regard that property as a legal institution, and not just as a right, attains a crucial status for the critical understanding of the relation between the legal and the cultural formation of the figure of the migrant and the figure of the citizen. The focus of this article is on the ambiguous nexus--both the inevitable con- flict and the inexorable convergence--between central notions of property and citizenship in the United States, on the one hand, and the concept of the migrant, on the other hand. It argues that one of the most essential properties of the migrant in U.S. cultural and legal imagination has been (and still is) the migrant's defining lack of "properties"; that is, the migrant is defined by being essentially dispossessed and therefore in need of the "property" of others. That makes the migrant a precarious but also threatening dialectical presence vis-à-vis the citizen in the cultural and legal imaginary of the United States. This article will discuss this dialectic in reference to the history of Asian American immigration and citizenship and, more particularly, in relation to the function of literature in the ongoing negotiation of the properties of the migrant. • Explicitly spatial, emic analysis of the rise of civic integrationism in Germany. • Integrationism replaced bifurcated policies for foreigners and (German) settlers. • Territory-based socialization replaced extra-territorial conception of nationness. • Civic integrationism territorialized rather than renationalized belonging in Germany. • Territorialization opens Germanness to socio-political belonging of "we in Germany" Seeking to contribute to recent research on integrationism and its country-specific modalities, this article provides a spatial analysis of transformations of the institutional, legal and discursive landscape of state-migrant relations in Germany over the past few decades. Conceptually, it brings geographic focus on territory and the territorial into the analysis of state and population relations. Empirically, it traces a changing understanding of integration and Germanness, stressing in the first place how the ascendance of integrationism since the turn of the century superseded the previous regime of completely bifurcated policies for immigrants of German descent versus for those without it. This supersession has conceptually centered on the German state's acknowledgment of the foundational importance of one's actual experience of moving across the territorial border. The paper also examines the changing positionality and conception of integration policies and state-sanctioned discursive renditions of Germanness over time. Finally, bringing the transformation of formal citizenship legislation in Germany into the analysis, the paper stresses the recent centrality of the expansion of the principle of ius domicile and the emergence of the statutory right to naturalization. I argue that such transformations integral to the integrationist era signal first and foremost the territorialization of belonging and citizenship in Germany. The paper concludes by reflecting on the potentials and limits of such territorialization within the context of broader neoliberalization of citizenship as well as in relation to the assessments that integrationism has re-nationalized citizenship. As a prominent figure in the history of painting, Pablo Picasso has bestowed upon the world his uniquely striking paintings in different styles, the most revolutionary of which being his Cubist art. The representation of women occupies a significant space in Picasso's Cubist works. While the painter's style is highly revolutionary, rejecting the accepted principles of painting, the subject matter does not change as such: nude women are objectified with a cubist look. Judith Butler's theory of gender performativity which examines the roots of naturalized concepts of gender, has been applied to Picasso's representations of women in his cubist paintings. This research examines the way naturalized definitions of gender have found their way into Picasso's paintings. By applying the Butlerian concept of gender performativity to a number of Picasso's cubist artworks, we try to indicate how stereotypes of gender linger in the discourse of modernism. Analyses lead to the conclusion that although the cubist style of painting is an experimentation in form, hardly any avant-gardism can be traced in the representation of gendered identities in Picasso. The article focuses on horror and the way in which the holy reasserts itself in us after the expulsion of the religious, the sense of a numinous supernatural that resists full naturalization by scientific reason. It mentions desires for intoxication, violent transgression, ecstasy, transcendence, rapture and mass folklore, recurring emblems to which many different themes have accrued. It also mentions chance to choose between a secular, temporal good and eternal salvation.

This paper investigates the phenomenon of "trabalho escravo" in Brazil through an analysis of linkages between social structures and inequalities, as well as the effectiveness of rights and citizenship. To that end, it outlines the historical emergence of the phenomenon during the six - ties, focusing on rural workers, and examines the socio-historical process of creating citizenship and access to rights for rural workers. This is accomplished, in particular, by mobilizing Jessé Souza's theory on the "naturalization of social inequalities." In doing so, my contribution demonstrates that this form of modern slavery in Brazil is completely linked with, and made possible by, the specific form in which citizenship, the rights related to it and capitalism have been developing within the country, highlighting the fact that such a phenomenon is neither an anomaly nor a mere heritage of slavery. During the height of the exclusion era, when Asian immigrants were prohibited from naturalizing and becoming United States citizens, state and federal court judges around the country naturalized at least 500 Asian immigrant servicepersons and veterans. Between 1918 and 1925, Federal Bureau of Naturalization officials and state and federal court judges had to determine whether the military naturalization provisions enacted in 1918 included the same racial restrictions that the general naturalization provisions included. This Article tells the story of how these officials and judges navigated statutory text, congressional intent, and the reality of Asian immigrant membership in the United States Armed Forces to determine the role that race vis-a-vis military service should play in determining citizenship eligibility. The story of Asian immigrant naturalization between 1918 and 1925 highlights a long-standing question within American citizenship and immigration law: how to measure an applicant's adoption of and commitment to mainstream American values, norms, and practices. Are there accurate and reliable categories that measure cultural assimilation and allow for cost-effective and efficient decision-making? Alternatively, are categories sufficiently inaccurate and unreliable such that individualized assessments of specific cultural criteria offer the only legitimate approach? Based on administrative memos, state and federal court judicial opinions, and newspaper articles, this article reveals how state and federal court judges struggled with this general question and how the Supreme Court resolved the split that existed across the country. United States naturalization law continues to require categorybased decision-making, and it is important that we similarly interrogate those categories to determine the extent to which they accurately and reliably measure the intended naturalization criteria. Globalization, collapse of the Soviet Union, refugee crises, and the European Union enlargement have been the dominant causes of increased migration. While many countries in the world are relaxing their citizenship laws to comply with the challenges presented by increased migration, Lithuania continues to arm itself with legal and political barriers to restrict legalization of dual citizenship. This paper focuses on the existence and development of very strict dual citizenship laws in Lithuania and their effect on the country and its emigrants. It aims at uncovering the biggest obstacles to relaxing dual citizenship regulations. This study reveals many benefits of dual citizenship and balances them against the dangers dual citizenship may create. It also examines the citizenship regulations of the countries Lithuanians are mainly emigrating to. This paper argues that the resistance to dual citizenship does not benefit the country and Lithuanians living abroad, falls behind the global citizenship trend, and threatens the survival of the country. The goal of this paper is to amplify the ongoing debate pertaining to the restrictive dual citizenship regulations in Lithuania and to provide solutions to the existing stagnant situation. It is widely known that many local environmental mobilizations against resource extraction projects of transnational capital have been repressed by the use of the state force in the late-industrializing world. What is less known is the aftermath of these repressions. Do they conceal all the traces of these mobilizations and lead to naturalization of the extractive operations of transnational capital at the local spaces? We address this question by examining two subsequent local environmental mobilizations in Turkey against gold-mining MNCs. Drawing on Laclauian insights on political struggles and hegemony, we first conceptualize repression of dissent not only as the repression of dissidents or protesters, but also that of protest discourse. Then, we argue that the forceful repression of the actors of those mobilizations succeeding to articulate an appealing protest discourse can make the hegemony and domination of transnational capital at the local level highly fragile, thus providing the conditions of possibility of subsequent similar mobilizations. The protest discourse constituted through such mobilizations may sediment despite the repression of protesters and become highly influential on the discursive trajectory of subsequent mobilizations. Yet, such an influence, as we also demonstrate in this study, may not only enable subsequent movements, but also limit their hegemonic capabilities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
