This study reports a new Trichodinidae, Trichodina bellottii n. sp., parasitizing the pearly fish Austrolebias bellottii from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Its small subunit ribosomal ribonucleic acid (SSU rDNA) was sequenced for the first time. Based on the results from morphological identification, SSU rDNA sequencing, and Elliptical Fourier analysis, the new species was identified and compared with similar species. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that the genetic distances among the new species and similar species reached interspecific levels, furthermore, the phylogenetic study also validated the identification of T. bellottii n. sp. and its placement in the genus Trichodina. To be able to quantitatively describe the differences in shapes with similar species, this study used the elliptic Fourier analysis by first time in this genus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In total 374 specimens corresponding to four species of shrimp: Artemesia longinaris, Pleoticus muelleri, Peisos petrunkevitchii, Palaemon macrodactylus, and two species of crabs: Neohelice granulata and Cyrtograpsus angulatus were studied in the search of white spot syndrome virus (WSSV). The crustaceans were collected in the estuary of Bahia Blanca, the port of Mar del Plata and the Samborombón Bay, Argentina, between 2010 and 2014. A polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis in all of them has not detected any virus presence. These new results suggest that the discovery of infected shrimp in 2008-09 in the Bahia Blanca estuary may have been a one-time local event, promoted by special conditions of seawater temperature inside the estuary, coincident with the presence of a virus carrier or transporter. To determine if the virus was finally installed in the estuary of Bahia Blanca more screening are needed coming from a larger number of shrimp samples. These studies will be necessary mainly in A. longinaris (Penaeidae) since this family of shrimps is most susceptible to be affected by WSSV. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we describe two new species of Syndesmis living in Pseudechinus magellanicus in the Southwest Atlantic Ocean. The new species have a long stylet in the male reproductive system, which is different from that of the known species of the genus. Specimens of Syndesmis selknami n. sp. have a ∼220-μm-long stylet (∼1/3 of the body length, 0.69 mm). This ratio is unique because only four species ( Syndesmis echinorum , Syndesmis rubida , Syndesmis inconspicua and Syndesmis echiniacuti ) have similar stylet lengths but are larger in body sizes (3–5 mm). Specimens of Syndesmis aonikenki n. sp. have a ∼148-μm-long stylet (∼1/10 of the body length, 1.11 mm). Syndesmis pallida has a similar ratio but the uterus is located posteriorly, and the filament glands are very small and located in the posterior region of the body. Background: The earliest immune events induced by allergens are poorly understood, yet are likely essential to understanding how allergic inflammation is established. Objective: We sought to describe the earliest signaling events activated by allergen and determine their significance to allergic inflammation. Methods: A fungal-associated allergenic proteinase (FAP) or ovalbumin was administered once intranasally to wild-type mice to determine their ability to induce allergy-associated genes and initiate allergic lung inflammation. Mice deficient in recombinase activating gene 1, C3a, the C3a anaphylatoxin receptor, and MyD88 were challenged similarly to understand the requirement of these molecules and T and B cells for allergic inflammation. Adoptive T-cell transfer experiments were further performed to determine whether signal transducer and activator of transcription 6 (STAT6) was required for cell recruitment and allergic inflammation. Results: FAP, but not ovalbumin, induced eosinophilic airway inflammation and lung IL-4 production in the absence of adaptive immune cells after the transcriptional induction of allergy-specific airway chemokines. Allergen-mediated chemokine secretion and innate allergic lung inflammation occurred in the absence of STAT6, recombinase activating gene 1, C3a, C3a anaphylatoxin receptor, Toll-like receptor 4, and MyD88 but required intact proteinase activity. Furthermore, FAP induced recruitment of TH2 cells and eosinophils to lungs independently of STAT6, which was previously thought to be required for TH2 cell homing. Conclusion: FAP induces allergic lung inflammation through a previously unrecognized innate immune signaling mechanism. Clinical implications: These findings reveal a new paradigm for understanding how allergic inflammation begins and suggest novel possibilities for the prevention and treatment of allergic diseases, such as asthma.
