This systemic review and meta-analysis aimed to investigate the burden of tuberculosis immune reconstitution syndrome (TB-IRIS) and associated mortality to highlight the importance of future direction in preventing and treatment of TB-IRIS. Randomized clinical trials (RCTs) that compared early antiretroviral therapy (ART) versus late ART were included. PubMed, EMBASE, Science Direct and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials electronic databases were searched. This meta-analysis included 8 RCTs with a total of 4, 425 participants. The result of analysis showed that early initiation of ART was associated with increase in TB-IRIS (RR = 1.83; 95% CI: 1.24–2.70, p = 0.002; I2 = 74%, p = 0.0007) and TB-IRIS associated mortality (RR = 6.05; 95% CI: 1.06–34.59, p = 0.04; I2 = 0%, p = 0.78). Early ART was associated with overall mortality compared with late ART initiation. Grade 3 or 4 adverse events, achieving lower viral load and development of new AIDS-defining illness were not associated with the time of ART initiation. Early ART in HIV/TB co-infected patients resulted conclusive evidence of increased TB-IRIS incidence and TB-IRIS associated mortality. Hence, the finding calls for clinical judgment as to the benefits of initiating ART earlier against the risk of TB-IRIS and associated mortality.

Hypertension has emerged as a new threat to the health and well-being of people living with human immune deficiency virus (PLHIV). However, no data exist on care delivery and blood pressure control over time in Ethiopia. We assessed clinical care & level of blood pressure control among hypertensive people living with Human Immune Deficiency Virus (HIV).

Studying the relationship between mental illnesses and their environmental and genetic risk factors in low-income countries holds excellent promises. These studies will improve our understanding of how risk factors identified predominantly in high-income countries also apply to other settings and will identify new, sometimes population-specific risk factors. Here we report the successful completion of two intertwined pilot studies on khat abuse, trauma, and psychosis at the Gilgel Gibe Field Research Center in Ethiopia. We found that the Gilgel Gibe Field Research Center offers a unique opportunity to collect well-characterized samples for mental health research and to perform genetic studies that, at this scale, have not been undertaken in Ethiopia yet. We also supported service development, education, and research for strengthening the professional profile of psychiatry at the site.

Background. Shigella and parasitic infections are common public health problems throughout the world. Shigellosis is an acute gastroenteritis infection and one of Ethiopia’s most common causes of morbidity and mortality, especially in children under five. High resistance rates to commonly used antibiotic agents have been documented in different locations in Ethiopia. Objective. This study aimed to characterize the antimicrobial features of the Shigella species isolated from children under five years of age with acute diarrhea in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Methods. Using a cross-sectional study, freshly passed fecal specimens were collected for intestinal parasite and bacterial isolation. Fecal samples for bacterial identification were placed immediately in Cary–Blair media and transported to the Ethiopian Public Health Institution (EPHI) laboratory. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AMST) was conducted using the disk diffusion method. Data were described using descriptive statistical tools. The association of independent and dependent variables was evaluated with logistic regression. A P value ≤0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results. The prevalence of intestinal parasites was 8.2% with seven different species. Among the 534 stool-cultured specimens, 47 (8.8%) were positive for Shigella species. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AMST) showed that 100%, 93.6%, 80.9%, 72.3%, and 57.5% were susceptible to norfloxacin, nalidixic acid, ciprofloxacin, gentamicin, and cefoxitin, respectively. However, 100% of the isolates were resistant to amoxicillin and erythromycin. More than 50% of the isolates were resistant to three and above antibiotics, while none of them were susceptible to all the antibiotics tested. All risk factors assessed did not show a statistically significant association with Shigella infection. Conclusion. The high levels of antibiotic resistance observed among the commonly prescribed antibiotics are alarming. The emerging resistance to ciprofloxacin and nalidixic acid signals a severe public health threat in the management of shigellosis. Raising awareness about resistance and educating health professionals, policymakers, and the public can help improve the quality of patient care and rational antibiotic use.

Background: Plants in Ethiopia have become increasingly important as sources of traditional medicines. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that malaria kills 2.7 million people every year, 90 of who are from Africa. Malaria continues to be a national concern in Ethiopia as it plays a major role in the high mortality rates being experienced currently. The country has witnessed recurrent epidemics of the disease with grave consequences. The use and misuse of chloroquine to prevent and treat falciparum malaria have led to widespread appearance of chloroquine resistant parasites in Ethiopia and other tropical countries. These factors and the rising costs of non-chloroquine drugs have made the local people turn to traditional remedies for malaria management. This paper examines the current utilization of traditional plant medicines in managing malaria among the inhabitants of Assendabo Township in Jimma, Ethiopia. Method: A cross-sectional study was done on randomly selected inhabitants of Assendabo town and surrounding villages, using structured pre-tested questionnaires. Results: Both indigenous and introduced species of plants were in use, indicating that traditional medicinal practices in this region are dynamic. In total 8 species in 13 plant types were identified. The most common species used were ‘Armagusa’ Ajuga remota and ‘Birbira or Halleko’ Moringa olifera. The Ajuga species was a common ingredient in almost all medications used, while both these species reported anti-malarial effectivity. In most cases the plant extracts to be used for medication were obtained in a destructive manner, requiring conservation measures to ensure sustainable utilization. Conclusions: This study reiterates that a considerable proportion of the Ethiopian community uses traditional medicine to treat malaria and other diseases. The results of this study become a basis for selecting plants for further pharmacological and phytochemical studies to develop new and locally relevant anti-malarial agents in Ethiopia.

Introduction. Congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) is a common cause of neurodevelopmental delays and sensorineural hearing loss of infants, yet the prevalence of cCMV and the associated factors in Ethiopia are not studied. Hence, this study was to assess the prevalence and associated factors of cCMV in Southern Ethiopia. Methodology. A mother-newborn pair cross-sectional study was conducted at Hawassa University Comprehensive and Specialized Hospital, Ethiopia. Newborn’s saliva sample was tested for cCMV using Alethia CMV molecular assay. Mothers’ serum was tested serologically for anti-CMV IgM and IgG by EUROIMMUN ELISA. Pregnant women responded to a questionnaire about their previous and current obstetric history and sociodemographic characteristics. The chi-square (χ2) test and independent-sample t-test were used to determine the associations between infections and possible risk factors; then, potential variables were screened for multivariable analysis. Results. A total of 593 mother-newborn pairs were assessed. CMV was detected in 14 of 593 newborn saliva swabs (2.4%; 95% CI 1.2–3.7). As assessed by CMV IgM-positive results, maternal CMV seropositivity was 8.3% (49/593); thus, the rate of mother-to-child transmission of CMV was 28% (14/49) among CMV IgM-positive women. Congenital CMV infection was significantly associated with maternal exposure through nursery school children in the household, women sharing a feeding cup with children, and any of the detected curable STIs during pregnancy. Birth weight was negatively associated with CMV infection. Maternal age, gravidity, level of education, and sharing of children feeding utensils were not associated with cCMV infection. Conclusion. A high rate of cCMV infection in the absence of awareness demands further in-depth investigation in Ethiopia. Thus, policymakers must take appropriate action through the antenatal care system for prevention strategies and put in place a constant health education and awareness creation of pregnant women about the causes of infection and hygienic measures.
