The objective of this study was to identify opportunities to improve identification and evaluation of child abuse by (1) describing rates of initial and recurrent injury in young infants, (2) describing the frequency of a history of prior injury in young children evaluated by a child abuse pediatrician, and (3) identifying practice variation, including use of skeletal surveys as an example, in the identification and evaluation of injury across a network of 6 children’s hospitals.

Urinary C-C motif chemokine ligand 14 (CCL14) is a strong predictor of persistent stage 3 acute kidney injury (AKI). Multiple clinical actions are recommended for AKI but how these are applied in individual patients and how the CCL14 test results may impact their application is unknown.

Technical standards are resources that are important for engineering and engineering technology students due to ABET accreditation requirements and future professional use of the documents. Previous studies have surveyed librarians at Association of Research Libraries (ARL) institutions with engineering programs and librarians at universities with top-ranked engineering programs about standards. This study fills a gap by focusing on librarians at institutions with engineering technology programs. We surveyed 34 academic librarians at institutions with four-year bachelor programs in the disciplines of mechanical engineering technology or electrical and electronics engineering technology to learn about standards access and challenges at their libraries, standards education for students, and librarians' standards-related professional development experiences and needs. Key findings include: standards access and standards education efforts are skewed towards larger institutions; librarians encounter significant cost challenges in providing standards access; few librarians receive education about standards until moving into their careers; and there is a need for self-paced librarian training materials focused on standards. Further education for librarians about standards and increased standards access has the potential to have a significant impact on many students, given the reach of librarians in their liaison roles. Photosensitive instruments which measure absolute irradiance in four spectral bands (2000–2500 A, 2500–4000 A, 4000–5000 A, and 5000–10 000 A) are described. One instrument is used to cover each range. The basic unit is a prism-type spectrometer that weighs 2 lb and measures 112 by 15 in. This compact packaging is achieved by the use of a unique single prism that produces a straight-through optical axis. The spectral cutoffs are sharp and the electrical output is constant for a given flux of any wavelength distribution within the spectral passband. The passband with sharp wavelength cutoffs and a flat response versus wavelength is accomplished by the use of a mask with variable aperture placed in the focal plane. Microsecond response time is obtained through the use of a 34-in. phototube detector which is used as a photomultiplier or photodiode, depending upon sensitivity requirements.

A 7-month-old boy became difficult to arouse, was limp and had blue extremities 8 hours after immunization with intravenous poliovirus, diphtheria-tetanus toxoids-acellular pertussis, Haemophilus influenzaetype b-hepatitis B virus and pneumococcal vaccines. The hypotonic-hyporesponsive episode had resolved by the time the infant was seen in an emergency department 1 hour later. The report describes hypotonic-hyporesponsive episode, encourages reporting of vaccine-associated adverse events and discusses prognosis and implications for subsequent immunization.
