1. Downscatter correction and choice of collimator in 123I imaging

Abstract

123I imaging is increasingly used in nuclear medicine but downscatter from high (>300 keV) energy emissions degrades the image and introduces variation in sensitivity with depth when imaging with a low energy collimator. A dual windowing technique using a matched window immediately above the principle window to correct for the effects of downscatter is described. The technique is shown to correct for the variation in sensitivity with depth and to reduce outlying scatter. Quantitative imaging of 123I using a low energy collimator should always employ downscatter correction.

Abstract

We have searched for resonance production in the reaction ???Ks0Kp. No signal was found for the?c and an upper limit for the radiative with " keV (95% c.l.) is obtained. For the glueball candidate ?(1440) (previouslyi) the upper limit " is derived. In the tagged data sample resonance formation of a spin 1 state at 1420 MeV is observed, which is absent in the untagged data. The mass and width of this state are consistent with those of thef1(1420); an analysis of decay angular distributions favours positive parity.

Abstract

A search for new leptons, charged and neutral, produced ine+e- collisions at an average c.m. energy of 44.2 GeV, has been carried out with the CELLO detector at PETRA. No such particles have been observed: we exclude pair production of new charged leptons at the 95% C.L. in the mass range 1.5–22.0 GeV/c2 and of neutral leptons in the mass range 3.1–18.0 GeV/c2. Single production of a heavy neutrino together with a standard neutrino has also been studied; we exclude an electron-like neutral lepton in the mass ranges 0.6–34.6 GeV/c2 forV—A coupling to theW boson, and 0.4–37.4 GeV/c2 forV+A coupling.

Abstract

The poor results of systemic chemotherapy for colorectal liver metastases have focussed attention on the use of regional chemotherapy. Emobolizing, biodegradable particles can be coadministered with anticancer drugs to slow temporarily the arterial blood flow and increase drug uptake within the tumour-bearing liver. Alternatively, such microspheres can be loaded with cytotoxic agents and act as slow-release mechanisms following embolization. In both instances, size and rate of degradation are important. The aim of this study was to evaluate the biological degradation of albumin microspheres in the liver of patients with colorectal liver metastases.

Abstract

Abstract: The three reactionse +e−→e +e−e+e−,e + e -→e + e -μ+μ- ande + e -→μ+μ-μ+ μ- have been studied using the CELLO detector at PETRA. The data correspond to 130 pb−1 collected at energies ranging from 35 GeV to 46.8 GeV. A detailed analysis of the distribution of the observed events in phase space shows good agreement with QED to order α4.

Abstract

Mass limits are presented for various supersymmetric particles: scalar partners of electrons, muons, taus and quarks; photinos, winos and zinos. They were obtained from the analysis of an exposure of 48.6 pb-1 of the CELLO detector at the PETRAe+e- storage ring up to a center of mass energy of 46.8 GeV. Special attention has been given to the case where the photino is assumed to be the lightest supersymmetric particle, but other possibilities have also been considered.

In the reaction γγ→KS0KS0resonance production of thef2−is observed. For the radiative withis found. The small number of events in thef2,a2mass region is consistent with the assumption of destructivef2−a2interference. From the mass distribution we determine the relative phases between the tensor mesons. Upper limits on the radiative widths of the glueball candidatesf2(1720) andX(2220) are derived.

10. Arteriovenous shunting in patients with colorectal liver metastases

Abstract

The outlook for patients with colorectal liver metastases is poor. Microspheres have been combined with cytotoxics and administered via the hepatic artery in an attempt to improve tumour drug exposure within the liver. However, it has been suggested that arteriovenous connections might occur in association with intrahepatic tumours causing loss of regional advantage, and that the administration of microspheres further exacerbates arteriovenous shunting. In seven patients with colorectal liver metastases, base-line shunting was measured using a tracer quantity of radio-labelled albumin microspheres. The shunted fraction of a 'therapeutic quantity' of microspheres was subsequently measured in the same group of patients using albumin microspheres carrying a different radio-label. Base-line shunt for 0.5 x 10(6) microspheres was found to be 2.2 +/- 1.8% (mean +/- s.d.); the percentage shunt of a therapeutic quantity (40-80 x 10(6)) of microspheres was 3.0 +/- 0.8%. We conclude that arteriovenous shunting in patients with colorectal liver metastases is minimal, and is not significantly increased by the administration of therapeutic quantity of microspheres during regional chemotherapy.

11. Clinical correlation of high activity dynamic hepatic scintigraphy in patients with colorectal cancer

Abstract

The hepatic perfusion index, the ratio of hepatic arterial to total liver blood flow, was measured in 50 consecutive patients with colorectal cancer using radiolabelled colloid with high administered activity. In patients with proven liver metastases the diagnostic sensitivity of the HPI was 96% and the predictive value of a negative test was 92%. Dynamic hepatic scintigraphy is of value in the management of patients with colorectal cancer.
