This work presents a spark-gap with a new design, using properties of electric discharges on insulating surface materials. It generates pulses with high frequency components of larger amplitudes, when compared with conventional spark-gap designs. Testing this spark-gap design in an N2TE UV laser, laser emission shows an increase of 60% in peak power output and a temporal width value reduction of 40%. This new design is very simple and strongly modifies laser output characteristics.

In this paper the ionizing role of isobutane (iso-C4H10) in the operation of a N2TE UV laser is analyzed. Laser pulse width value modifications, different laser wavelengths generated in the 2+ system and voltage pulse period modifications are analysed in order to show that isobutane, in very reduced quantities, generates a preionizing effect that can be higher than that produced by a conventional wire preionization system.

This work reports the role some additives have in pre-ionizing a N2 TE UV laser (337.1 nm). The modifications in both stimulated radiation characteristics and excitation-pulse period prove the different ionizing power of each element. The laser operating without a pre-ionizing wire device and with N2 plus different additives was able to generate pulses with a temporal width of the same order than those obtained when it was operating with N2 and a pre-ionizing wire device. Also, a relation between ionization efficiency and interelectrode distance has been established allowing the prediction of conditions for optimum laser-pulse width generation.

The functioning of a carbon dioxide laser is generalized from the standard low nitrogen concentration, low temperature coolant to the high nitrogen concentration, room temperature air free convection cooling regime. The efficiencies of the two regimes are comparable. Theoretical arguments are presented to support this new regime.

A 3% efficiency, crossed-field type, N2 laser (337.1 nm) has been developed, based on very low inductance circuits (coaxial configuration) and a careful selection of their resonance frequencies.

An analysis of a modified electrode geometry for pulsed gas-laser excitation circuits, generating shorter excitation pulses than those normally obtained, is reported. Results from an atmospheric N2 laser obtained with this electrode geometry are compared with others available in the literature.

Accurate wavelength measurements in the molecular nitrogen pulsed laser have been made. Four new ir laser bands were discovered. In addition, about two hundred new stimulated emission lines belonging to the first and second positive systems were obtained and identified as to rotational quantum number. An analysis of the possible pumping mechanisms in accordance with experimental results is given.

False spectra produced by intense coherent illumination are studied. This paper presents the well-known geometrical scheme to explain the formation and location of false spectral lines or Rowland ghosts, and from that scheme it was found that the number of ghosts produced by a spectral line is limited. This number is the same for the blazed region of the grating as for the unblazed one, and it includes the Rowland ghosts produced by the line at different spectral orders of the grating. Rowland’s formula, derived on the basis of the geometrical scheme, may be used to calculate ghost wavelengths far away from the parent line. The formula was experimentally checked. Experiments were performed by using a pulsed ruby laser as a light source, and the extreme ghosts were recorded at 1336.9 Å and 10761.5 Å.

Thirteen laser lines of the 1-0, 2-1, and 3-1 bands of the first positive system of N2were detected and their wavelengths measured. Eleven laser lines were classified and two more reclassified.
