This paper presents how the TAREME (Trigger-Action Rule Editing, Monitoring, Executing) platform provides support for executing and analysing personalized automations in Internet of Things scenarios. The platform allows the creation and execution of trigger-action personalization rules that can change the state of connected smart objects and devices, send alarms or reminders, and modify applications’ state depending on contextual events. This paper focuses on how the platform supports analytics about the actual use of the rules and provides associated information, which can be useful to better understand users’ personalization needs. Such features have been deployed in a first round of six trials, which have shown the feasibility of the approach and reported fruitful feedback.

We propose a mixed methods approach to digital ethnographic research. Treating online conversational environments as communities that ethnographers engage with as in traditional fieldwork, we represent those conversations and the codes made by researchers thereon in network form. We call these networks “semantic social networks” (SSNs), as they incorporate information on social interaction and their meaning as perceived by informants as a group and use methods from network science to visualize these ethnographic data. We present an application of this method to a large online conversation about community provision of health and social care and discuss its potential for mobilizing collective intelligence.

Nanomechanical resonators have emerged as sensors with exceptional sensitivities. These sensing capabilities open new possibilities in the studies of the thermodynamic properties in condensed matter. Here, we use mechanical sensing as a novel approach to measure the thermal properties of low-dimensional materials. We measure the temperature dependence of both the thermal conductivity and the specific heat capacity of a transition metal dichalcogenide monolayer down to cryogenic temperature, something that has not been achieved thus far with a single nanoscale object. These measurements show how heat is transported by phonons in two-dimensional systems. Both the thermal conductivity and the specific heat capacity measurements are consistent with predictions based on first-principles.

This paper presents a solution for supporting adaptive user interfaces in work environments that require operators to move about in dynamic contexts for manipulating various physical objects. The solution architecture is built upon the use of logical languages for interactive applications integrated with context aware and adaptive features. The proposed architecture is able to adapt to specific aspects of the context during run-time by communicating with a context server and applying the specified adaptation rules. In order to show the possibilities of the proposed solution, we report on its application in the development of an adaptive user interface for a warehouse picking system, and discuss the results of the associated tests.

Background: Left atrial (LA) size is frequently assessed by posterior-anterior linear measurement of LA (LAD P-A) in the parasternal long axis to expedite examination. Aging, changes in body surface area, and several cardiovascular pathologies can affect aortic root (AoR) size, thereby affecting LA anatomical shape. We hypothesized that AoR dilatation influences LAD P-A and consequently correct assessment of LA size. Results: We tested our hypothesis in a study of 70 patients with AoR diameter ranging from 2.7 to 4.8 cm. LA size assessed in parasternal long axis view as LAD P-A was compared to that with LA width and length acquired in the apical two and four chamber view. Simpson’s method of discs was used as standard measurement to assess LA volume. Conclusions: Our study documents that increases in AoR impact on the linear measurement of LA, resulting in an underestimated LAD P-A. LA size ought to be calculated from the apical two and four chambers view parameters, especially in patients with AoR dilatation.

Objective: Familial Combined Hyperlipoproteinemic (FCH) is a disorder of lipid metabolism characterized by an increased risk of premature coronary heart disease. Our aim is to estimate the prevalence of FCH subjects in a large North-Italian rural population monitored for 32 years (1972-2004). Methods: In the 2004 Brisighella Heart Study (BHS) survey, 1303 subjects were tested in five or more four-yearly surveys (mean age: 63.7±14.9 years). The individual plasma lipid phenotype by Fredrickson classification was attributed for each survey on the basis of low density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol and triglycerides. A primary dyslipoproteinemia was suspected on the basis of personal and family history, body mass index and dietary habits. Results: At the end of the longitudinal study, the subjects with variable phenotype in the studied population were 17.2% and among primary hyperlipoproteinemics 36.3%. Mean IIb phenotype prevalence was 12.3 ± 6.3% in all hyperlipoproteinemics, while it was 33.4 ± 11.9% in potential FCH subjects. Only 7 subjects were constantly IIb during the observation time and four of them are certainly secondary hyperlipoproteinemics. The Ilb phenotype prevalence was significantly more variable than the Ila phenotypes. The 3.1% of the studied subjects have been selected as candidates for a FCH diagnosis without significant differences between sexes. Conclusion: Our data suggest the existence of a long-term primary variability of the individual plasma lipid phenotype. The prevalence of FCH in the general population appears to be near 2%.

Various investigators believe that alcoholic chronic pancreatitis is the result of recurrent episodes of acute necrotic pancreatitis. The aim of this work is to study pancreatic histology in early stages of the disease to search for evidence of these acute episodes.

The purpose of this work was to determine whether obesity is a risk factor for pancreatic cancer.

Whether acute alcoholic pancreatitis occurs in a normal pancreas or in a pancreas that has already been altered by chronic pancreatitis is unclear. Our objective is to clarify the relation between acute and chronic alcoholic pancreatitis by histologic study of the pancreas in a group of patients having a first attack of acute alcoholic pancreatitis.

Idiopathic pancreatic hyperenzymemia is a new syndrome that is characterized by a chronic increase of serum pancreatic enzymes in the absence of pancreatic disease. The aim of this study was to assess whether mutations of the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator(CFTR) gene may have a role in the etiology of this hyperenzymemia.
