4. Traditional and Egalitarian Latino Couples: A Study of Division of Household Labor and Financial Management.

Abstract

Media images of Latino couples and families often portray stereotypical and patriarchal images: an overbearing, demanding and uncompromising husband and father, a submissive and powerless wife and mother with little or no authority in the family. Little is often reported about dual earner Latino couples who hold egalitarian beliefs about marriage. This paper addresses current practices among soon-to-be-married and recently married Latino couples. Based on interviews with eight couples I study how Latino couples make sense of their ?egalitarian? marriages, when faced with ?traditional? influences from the Catholic church and family. I focus on division of household labor and financial management. For the most part, couples in this study held egalitarian ideology and intended to have egalitarian marriages, however, their current behavior was frequently traditional. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
