Background: Time perception is an automatic process that can be influenced by intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Aims: This study aimed to investigate the effect of age and emotions on the ability to keep track of short suprasecond intervals. Methods: Younger adults (N = 108, age range: 18–35) and older adults (N = 51, age range: 65–87) were asked to reproduce, bisect, or double the duration of facial stimuli randomly presented for 1500, 3000, and 4500 ms. The experiment included facial stimuli with positive, negative, or neutral expressions. Results: The participants across age correctly reproduced intervals but overestimated and underestimated them when asked to bisect and double the intervals, respectively. Overall, when faces were presented with a positive or negative expression, an overestimation of time intervals emerged compared to faces with neutral expressions. Emotions had a greater effect on older adults, who showed a greater overestimation of positive facial expressions and an underestimation of sad, but not angry, facial expressions. Discussion: The results provide evidence that time perception is influenced by age and emotions, with older adults showing a greater effect of emotions on time processing. Conclusion: The study suggests an interaction among time processing, age, and emotions, highlighting an automatic relationship among these domains, often considered independent.

Altitude hypoxia can impair sensory and cognitive functions, from causing slowed responses to sensory hallucinations. In a field study, we tested 12 expeditioners at varied altitudes (low: 1696 m; high: 4556 m) with a simple auditory detection task and a dichotic listening paradigm in which a voice was presented, lateralized, within a binaural white noise stream. Slower reaction times and a reduced right ear advantage might be expected at high (vs. low) altitude, due to hypoxia. The participants’ performances on both tasks did not differ between conditions, revealing that these functions are resistant to short-term hypoxia in young healthy adults.

Difficulties in source monitoring (SM) tasks observed in healthy older adults may be linked to associative memory deficits since SM requires individuals to correctly bind and later remember these bound features to discriminate the origin of a memory. Therefore, focusing attention on discriminating factors that may attenuate older adults’ difficulties in attributing contextual information to memories is necessary. We investigated the effect of affective information on source monitoring in younger and older adults by manipulating the type of affective information (pictures and music) and assessing the ability to remember spatial and temporal source details for affective pictures encoded while listening to classical music. Older and younger adults viewed a series of affective IAPS pictures presented on the left or right side of the computer screen in two different lists. At test, participants were asked to remember if the picture was seen (right/left), in which list (list1/list2) or whether it was new. Results showed that spatial information was attributed better than temporal information and emotional pictures were attributed better than neutral pictures in both younger and older adults. In addition, although music significantly increased source memory performance in both younger and older participants compared to the white noise condition, the pleasantness of music differentially affected memory for source details. The authors discuss findings in terms of an interaction between music, emotion and cognition in aging.

Activation of medial Prefrontal Cortex (mPFC) has been typically found during reality monitoring tasks (i.e., distinguishing between internal self-generated vs external information). No study, however, has yet investigated whether transcranial Random Noise Stimulation (tRNS) over the mPFC leads to a reduction in reality-monitoring misattributions in aging. In particular, stimulating mPFC should increase the number of cognitive operations engaged while encoding and this distinctive information may help older adults to discriminate between internal and external sources better. In addition, given that older adults are more sensitive to positively-charged information compared to younger adults and that mPFC is typically recruited during encoding of positive stimuli with reference to themselves, activation of mPFC should further sustain source retrieval in older adults. In this double-blind, sham-controlled study, we examined whether tRNS over the mPFC of healthy younger and older adults during encoding enhances subsequent reality monitoring for seen versus imagined emotionally-charged words. Our findings show that tRNS enhances reality monitoring for positively-charged imagined words in the older adult group alone, highlighting the role that mPFC plays in their memory for positive information. In line with the control-based account of positivity effects, our results add evidence about the neurocognitive processes involved in reality monitoring when older adults face emotionally-charged events.

Emotional face recognition is impaired in bipolar disorder, but it is not clear whether this is specific for the illness. Here, we investigated how aging and bipolar disorder influence dynamic emotional face recognition. Twenty older adults, 16 bipolar patients, and 20 control subjects performed a dynamic affective facial recognition task and a subsequent rating task. Participants pressed a key as soon as they were able to discriminate whether the neutral face was assuming a happy or angry facial expression and then rated the intensity of each facial expression. Results showed that older adults recognized happy expressions faster, whereas bipolar patients recognized angry expressions faster. Furthermore, both groups rated emotional faces more intensely than did the control subjects. This study is one of the first to compare how aging and clinical conditions influence emotional facial recognition and underlines the need to consider the role of specific and common factors in emotional face recognition.

Background and aims:This study examined whether remembering location information relies on efficient inhibitory functions. Methods:In two experiments, younger and older adults performed an active visuo-spatial working memory (VSWM) span task. Participants were presented with a series of locations and asked to remember only final target locations, which were manipulated according to source (e.g., indicated by the experimenter or participant). Results:Data showed that, as the complexity of the VSWM task increased, older adults made more intrusion errors than younger adults, and that, older adults especially seemed to have difficulty in recalling correct locations when non-final locations were directly manipulated. Conclusions:This study highlights how older adults’ performance in VSWM is influenced by inhibitory working memory functions, which become particularly crucial as attentional demands grow.

This paper is based on the source monitoring framework (Johnson, Hashtroudi, & Lindsay, 1993) and provides a review of data that suggests the involvement of working memory encoding processes in source monitoring tasks. Source monitoring refers to diverse mental processes used to distinguish the origin of our memories. A key assumption is that, when people encode an event, component processes of working memory play a crucial role in maintaining and binding the various features (e.g., semantic, perceptual) of an event together. It follows that success on a working memory binding test should be a good predictor of proficiency on a long-term source monitoring task, and that individual differences in working memory binding ability should account for the different pattern of source monitoring errors. Interestingly, these predictions have not been directly tested.

In two experiments, participants were asked to perform simple action statements or to imagine performing the actions one, two, or four times in a single study session. The lag between repetitions could vary from 5 to 10 intervening items in Experiment 1 or be fixed at 0 and 4 in Experiment 2. In a test session that occurred either 24 or 48 hours later, participants were instructed to recognise statements only if they had occurred during the first session and, if recognised, to tell whether the action statement had been carried out or imagined. The primary finding was that it is possible to obtain an imagination inflation effect (that is, as repeated imaginations increase, participants are more likely to remember an action as performed) using a within-list paradigm. However, this outcome occurred only for spaced repetitions. The results are consistent with the hypothesis that repeated imagination increases the level of familiarity, which may, in turn, generate this memory illusion.

Background and aims:Controversial evidence suggests that music can enhance cognitive performance. In the present study, we examined whether listening to an excerpt of Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons” had a positive effect on older adults’ cognitive performance in two working memory tasks. Methods:With a repeated-measures design, older adults were presented with the forward version of the digit span and phonemic fluency in classical music, white-noise and no-music conditions. Results:Classical music significantly increased working memory performance compared with the no-music condition. In addition, this effect did not occur with white noise. Conclusion:The authors discuss this finding in terms of the arousal-and-mood hypothesis and the role of working memory resources in aging.

Memory for repeated items improves when presentations are spaced during study. This effect is found in explicit memory tasks using different types of material, different experimental paradigms, and in different subject populations. Two experiments are described where the spacing effect was assessed on a yes/no recognition memory task using words and nonwords as targets. The main results showed that changing the font between repeated occurrences of targets at study did not affect the spacing effect for words, even under shallow encoding conditions, but effectively removed the spacing effect with nonwords. In both experiments, the font manipulation was made between subjects, ruling out explanations in terms of differential attention to particular font conditions. These results provide further support for short-term perceptual priming accounts of the spacing effect: Semantically-based repetition priming affects memory for words; perceptual priming mechanisms affect memory for nonwords.

The present study showed that using incidental learning tasks promoting structural/perceptual processing of targets it is possible to obtain a reliable spacing effect for nonwords in a yes/no recognition memory task, whereas no spacing effect is detected for words. These data are, collectively, incompatible with current theories of spacing effects. A theoretical proposal to account for these findings is outlined.
