Objective: The present study, conducted with a population of military families, examined the comparative effectiveness of three program formats of Adaptive Parenting Tools (ADAPT), a parenting program for families of school-aged children in which a National Guard or Reserve (NG/R) parent had returned from deployment to the post-9/11 conflicts. Despite well-documented need, parenting programs for NG/R families are scarce and often inaccessible. We predicted that both facilitator-delivered conditions (i.e., in-person group; individual telehealth) would result in stronger improvements in observed parenting than assignment to the online self-directed condition. We further proposed a noninferiority hypothesis wherein no significant difference would be detected between telehealth and group conditions. Method: Families (N = 244; 87% Caucasian) were recruited from NG/R units in two midwestern states. Families (with a 5–12-year-old child) were randomized to one of three conditions: in-person multifamily group, individual telehealth, or an online, self-directed condition. The intervention was delivered using the same content across conditions, over 14 weeks (group, telehealth conditions) or 12 modules (online condition); either or both parents could participate. Results: Intent-to-treat analyses supported both hypotheses: families in both in-person group and telehealth conditions showed significant improvements to observed parenting at 1-year postbaseline compared with those assigned to the self-directed online condition. Conclusions: This is the first study to demonstrate that in-person group and telehealth parenting programs are equally effective and that both are superior to a self-directed online program. Limitations include differences between the session lengths in each format, as well as greater attrition in the in-person format. This study compared telehealth, in-person group, and a self-directed online format of the same parenting program for military families. Analyses of parenting practices at baseline and after 1 year showed that both the telehealth and the in-person group program led to significant improvements in parenting and were superior to the online self-directed program. This study explores the education of young Polish female refugees in postwar Britain, and the implications of the establishment of the Committee for the Education of Poles, a body brought into being on April 1, 1947, as a consequence of the passage of the Polish Resettlement Bill in March 1947 (the first ever British legislation dealing with mass immigration). It examines the newly introduced grammar schools for girls, the challenges raised for these new educational establishments, and the strategies introduced by the British authorities in order to cope with the growing numbers of Polish adolescents entering the country after World War II. Based on archival records and supported by oral interviews, the sample case studies presented herein highlight one way in which the young Polish community was rehabilitated in exile at the start of their path towards civic integration. They highlight the key importance of education to that pathway. The studies presented here provide an insight into the experiences of, and challenges faced by, young Polish women during the Process of their education and resettlement. Thanks to extant school reports, it has been possible to ascertain not only the practical and financial problems that impacted the schools presented in the paper, which operated under the auspices of the Committee for the Education of Poles, but also their slow, but steady improvement over time. The paper provides clear evidence that it was thanks to the Committee that a significant proportion of the younger generation of Poles managed to acquire the qualifications needed to secure their first jobs and ultimately a career in industry or business and so play a useful part in the economic life of Great Britain and her overseas territories. War photography scholarship tends to focus attention on photographers' lives and the thematic content of images. This study shifts the spotlight onto how varied members of the public respond to a body of work, in this case the photography and filmmaking of Tim Hetherington (1970-2011), whose archive the Imperial War Museum (IWM) obtained in 2017. We discuss findings from a number of visually-led focus groups with refugees, veterans, military family members, photography students and museum volunteers. Together we examined his image-making process with the groups to discover how they discussed notions such as intimacy, masculinity, the 'good' conflict photograph, and ethical dilemmas. We argue that engaging with multiple public perspectives through visual elicitation methods enhances curatorial knowledge and understanding of image-making practices in this specific context, whilst also offering insights for national museums more broadly on how dialogue with diverse communities can enrich the handling and display of new collections. The military issue has always been a concern in the foreign policy of the states, and the continuous progress made in the various military fields, as well as the increasingly significant tendency of military diplomacy to be involved in the maintenance of international peace and security, led to the need to use military experts within diplomatic missions, from specialists in the field to permanent advisers to the heads of permanent or temporary diplomatic missions. The history of military attachés dates to the early 19th century when European countries began sending military observers to foreign capitals to monitor military developments and gather intelligence about the accredited state. Military attachés are members of the army of the accrediting state and head the military offices of the respective diplomatic missions, being, in principle, hierarchically subordinate, regardless of rank, to the head of the diplomatic mission. However, this subordination does not prevent the military from communicating directly with the ministries regarding strict military issues, especially those that refer to military secrets. The period after the First World War, along with the development of Romanian diplomacy, was recorded as the strengthening of the institution of the military attachment, having a special contribution to the implementation of the country's military policy. While elevated suicide risk in the American military and veteran population has led to the development of targeted interventions, the increased risk of suicidal ideation and behavior among transgender and gender diverse (TGD) Service members requires that interventions address suicide risk within the context of minority stressors and gender-affirming care. This case study presents Jordan (an alias), a transgender Service member who received inpatient psychiatric treatment following a suicide attempt precipitated by distress relating to gender dysphoria, minority status, and associated stressors. Jordan completed Post-Admission Cognitive Therapy (PACT; Ghahramanlou-Holloway, Cox, & Greene, 2012), a cognitive-behavioral intervention targeting suicide risk among military personnel and dependents psychiatrically hospitalized following a suicidal crisis. Within the context of PACT, Jordan's treatment included identifying and addressing distress related to minority stressors (externalized stigma, internalized transphobia, anticipated rejection, gender concealment) using gender-affirming best practices. Marked changes in Jordan's self-report measures from baseline to follow-up, as well as qualitative changes reported by Jordan, demonstrate that she felt comfortable, safe, and ready to be discharged from the inpatient unit after completing PACT treatment and gaining exposure to the skills necessary to help prevent and/or manage future suicidal crises. Treatment implications and recommendations for addressing suicide risk within the context of gender-affirming care and prevalent minority stressors are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There was a historical and political intimacy between the Ethiopian Tewahido Orthodox Church (EOTC) and the Ethiopian state until their relationship was profoundly modified after the 1974 Revolution and the secular rupture connected to that. This was followed by political reforms by successive governments, which have had a leveling effect on the religious field. The country's religious minorities—Muslims and Protestants—have been engaged in recognition politics progressively attaining rights on par with the EOTC. This rebalancing is perceived to have come at the expense of the EOTC—from the decoupling of the Ethiopian nation from Orthodoxy, a continuous decline in the number of members of the Church, to a feeling of being persecuted and the siege mentality connected to that. While responding to these external challenges, the EOTC has also experienced internal rifts that pose existential threats not only to maintain its historically constituted hegemony but also continue to exist as a united church. This contribution critically appraises the political journey of the EOTC in the long longue durée and with a relational lens, i.e., from its trajectory from being at the center of the Ethiopian state and an established religion, to the various external and internal challenges the Church has faced in the context of the process of state reformation and how it has sought to regain and maintain its hegemony, or at least negotiate its decline through the deployment of various strategies. Parental deployment and frequent relocations exert significant stress on children from military families. This stress can be extremely disruptive to young children's social, cognitive and behavioural development. It can result in negative social, emotional, and physical responses. There are a broad range of programs, resources, and services available mainly in the US, but also internationally. The programs endeavour to mitigate the impacts of military life on young children by providing support to families. This paper explores the programs for families with young children and the need for culturally and age-appropriate resources. It also discusses how the Early Childhood Defence Programs (ECDP) project is responding to this need by developing three free, online Australian early childhood programs for parents, family workers and educators. This scoping review of currently available programs and resources will determine how the project, and others wanting to support children from military families, can best address this need. Service in the armed forces has long been linked with ideas of citizenship but these have often been associated with serving, male personnel. We argue that ideas of military citizenship should extend to other, non-serving family members because of the expectations placed on them by the armed forces. In this article we focus on the lives of children who have parents serving in the military. Drawing on the idea of everyday citizenship, we examine the impact of military service on children's lives. Based on empirical evidence from young people living in a UK garrison city, we examine how the spaces of the home, school and recreational clubs shape their identities as service children and reflect different forms of citizenship. In doing so, we foreground children's voices to counter commonly-held discourses of heroism or victimhood. We conclude that emotional geographies are significant to the formation of military citizenship, which extends well beyond that of serving personnel. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Over the past two decades, Algerian authorities have made significant investments in the housing sector, leading to substantial changes in Algiers' urban landscape. The implementation of forced housing relocation programs, such as the Program for the Resorption of Precarious Housing (RHP), has been pivotal in transforming Algiers into the first African city without slums, recognized by the United Nations in 2016. However, the selection of receiving sites has presented challenges for the authorities, as the actual implementation deviated from the initial plans outlined in the PDAU master plan. This study focuses on examining the site selection process for relocation in Algiers and delineating the disparities between planned and implemented land mobilization. Using an integrated approach, the analysis targets an in-depth study of the PDAU documents. It draws on a comprehensive data collection process, complemented by interviews with all stakeholders which have been engaged in either in the relocation operations in Algiers or in the elaboration of the PDAU. Furthermore, the study is supported with by a large cartographic overlay of the PDAU investigated sites, which allows a better understanding of the subject. Similar studies conducted worldwide have shown that failures in master planning often result from difficulties in execution and compliance, which are common issues in developing countries. In Algiers, the slow process of land mobilization has compelled authorities to adopt unplanned alternative solutions, making land management a blind spot in the planning practice and hindering the implementation of the PDAU as well as limiting the monitoring of urban expansion and development. Additionally, the study shows that despite attempts to incorporate a Spatial Decision Support System (SDSS) within the PDAU, its execution was to a large extent clearly ineffective. The paper contends that failures in urban land management and data collection constitute weak links impeding spatial development. This has shed light on deficiencies in the cadastral system in Algiers, with ambiguities in the legal framework of land management. The study also shows that the strict adherence to master plans can be challenging when dealing with relocation operations due to various factors. Addressing these issues is crucial for the elaboration of more effective relocation programs. Deliberate self-harm (DSH) is common in modern society. A million people worldwide die from suicide each year, leading to a large toll on human resources and economy. Research has revealed DSH as an important indicator of eventual suicide worldwide. The present study focused on DSH attempters among Armed Forces personnel and family members with the aim of identifying modifiable factors to provide recommendations for primary prevention in the military milieu. Hundred cases of survivors of DSH were evaluated in a case–control study using psychiatry assessment instruments (the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview, Pierce Suicide Intent Scale, Hamilton's Depression and Anxiety Scales and presumptive life event scale) to assess psychiatric morbidity and psychosocial correlates. The findings were compared with those of 100 healthy matched controls. The data were analysed using SPSS software. The majority of DSH survivors (98%) had concurrent psychiatric morbidity, major depressive disorder (23%) being the commonest diagnosis followed by psychotic disorder and alcohol use disorder. Presence of relationship problems (69%) and financial difficulties (19%) were significant triggering factors in our study. Many DSH attempters had voiced suicidal ideation (66%) before their act and had history of aggression or violence (76%) in the past. Our findings are discussed in relation with findings in the literature. Recommendations regarding awareness campaign, specific skill development programs and the need for early intervention in individuals with psychiatric morbidity have been proposed to prevent such behaviours.
