Adversarial training suffers from poor effectiveness due to the challenging optimisation of loss with hard labels. To address this issue, adversarial distillation has emerged as a potential solution, encouraging target models to mimic the output of the teachers. However, reliance on pre‐training teachers leads to additional training costs and raises concerns about the reliability of their knowledge. Furthermore, existing methods fail to consider the significant differences in unconfident samples between early and late stages, potentially resulting in robust overfitting. An adversarial defence method named Clean, Performance‐robust, and Performance‐sensitive Historical Information based Adversarial Self‐Distillation (CPr & PsHI‐ASD) is presented. Firstly, an adversarial self‐distillation replacement method based on clean, performance‐robust, and performance‐sensitive historical information is developed to eliminate pre‐training costs and enhance guidance reliability for the target model. Secondly, adversarial self‐distillation algorithms that leverage knowledge distilled from the previous iteration are introduced to facilitate the self‐distillation of adversarial knowledge and mitigate the problem of robust overfitting. Experiments are conducted to evaluate the performance of the proposed method on CIFAR‐10, CIFAR‐100, and Tiny‐ImageNet datasets. The results demonstrate that the CPr&PsHI‐ASD method is more effective than existing adversarial distillation methods in enhancing adversarial robustness and mitigating robust overfitting issues against various adversarial attacks. The authors’ method allows the target model to distill the most instant robust and non‐robust knowledge from the previous iteration. To avoid storing model parameters to generate AEs, an existing self‐distillation algorithm was extended, making each “distilling‐batch” participate in multiple consecutive iterations. Experimental results illustrate that our proposed method further mitigates over‐fitting issues and improves robustness without teachers.

The surface structures of heterogeneous catalysts significantly impact catalytic performance, especially for structure-sensitive reactions. In this study, we employed surface techniques such as low-energy ion scattering spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy with CO as a probe (CO-FTIR) to investigate the surface dynamics of Rh/Al2O3catalysts for propane dehydrogenation (PDH). We observed a notable induction process for PDH on Rh/Al2O3catalysts, marked by significant variations in propane conversion, methane, and propylene selectivities. These changes were attributed to substantial coke formation. Aberration-corrected high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy) and CO-FTIR revealed the coexistence of Rh nanoparticles, clusters, and single atoms on the surface. Through various dynamic quasi in-situcharacterizations, we found that coke preferentially covered Rh clusters, thereby inhibiting C–C bond breaking and methane formation. Meanwhile, Rh single atoms were less affected by coke coverage and remained exposed as active and selective sites for PDH, favoring propylene production. This work underscores the sensitivity of PDH to the sizes of Rh species, with isolated Rh single atoms promoting propylene formation.

• Fluorine-free superhydrophobic surface is prepared by laser processing and spraying coating. • Superhydrophobic surface can withstand mechanical durability tests, such as sandpaper abrasion and tape peeling cycles. • Superhydrophobic surface presents excellent anticorrosion and antibacterial abilities after multiple mechanical abrasion. • Superhydrophobic surface exhibits self-healing, self-cleaning in air or oil and chemical stability. Superhydrophobic surfaces with water-repelling ability have important applications, such as self-cleaning, antibacterial and corrosion protection. However, the using of harmful fluorinated materials and its poor mechanochemical stability limit its practical application. Herein, a fluorine-free, robust and self-healing superhydrophobic surface is prepared through a two-step method of laser processing and spraying coating for anticorrosion and antibacterial applications. Laser processing is used to construct periodic micron-sized pillars for obtaining strong interface bonding between coating and substrate by mechanical interlocking effect, and as an 'armor', preventing the removal of the coating. The coating consists of epoxy resin (EP), hexadecyltrimethoxysilane (HDTMS) and γ-aminopropyltriethoxysilane treated Cu 2 O (KH550-Cu 2 O). The superhydrophobic surface can withstand various mechanical durability tests, such as multiple sandpaper abrasion and tape peeling cycles. It exhibits excellent corrosion inhibition efficiency (η p > 99 %) on Mg alloy, Tinplate and Al alloy, which results from superhydrophobicity and organic coating. The superhydrophobicity endows surface with excellent antibacterial adhesion performance in a static liquid environment. The bactericidal activity of KH550-Cu 2 O can effectively inactivate the bacteria in contact with the surface and the free bacteria, providing excellent antibacterial ability in a dynamic liquid environment. It still exhibits good anticorrosion and antibacterial abilities after multiple mechanical abrasion cycles due to the outstanding mechanical durability. Moreover, it exhibits outstanding self-healing ability to plasma etching and oil contamination, self-cleaning ability under air and oil conditions, and chemical stability against acids and alkalis solution. Low-quality palmprint images will degrade the recognition performance, when they are captured under the open, unconstraint, and low-illumination conditions. Moreover, the traditional single-view palmprint representation methods have been difficult to express the characteristics of each palm strongly, where the palmprint characteristics become weak. To tackle these issues, in this article, we propose a structure suture learning-based robust multiview palmprint recognition method (SSL_RMPR), which comprehensively presents the salient palmprint features from multiple views. Unlike the existing multiview palmprint representation methods, SSL_RMPR introduces a structure suture learning strategy to produce an elastic nearest neighbor graph (ENNG) on the reconstruction errors that simultaneously exploit the label information and the latent consensus structure of the multiview data, such that the discriminant palmprint representation can be adaptively enhanced. Meanwhile, a low-rank reconstruction term integrating with the projection matrix learning is proposed, in such a manner that the robustness of the projection matrix can be improved. Particularly, since no extra structure capture term is imposed into the proposed model, the complexity of the model can be greatly reduced. Experimental results have proven the superiority of the proposed SSL_RMPR by achieving the best recognition performances on a number of real-world palmprint databases.

With the growing interest in convex and nonconvex low-rank matrix learning problems, the widely used singular value thresholding (SVT) operators associated with rank relaxation functions often face higher computational complexity, particularly for large-scale data matrices. To improve the efficacy of low-rank subspace clustering and overcome the issue of high computational complexity, this work proposes an efficient and effective method that avoids the need for singular value decomposition (SVD) computations in the iteration scheme. This can be achieved through the use of a computationally efficient and compact formulation, as well as automatic removal of the optimal mean, which reduces time consumption and enhances evaluation performance. A unified clustering framework based on Schatten- $p$ norm regularized by $\ell _{2,q}$ -norm can be formulated using this processing way, where inner element suppression can be achieved by choosing appropriate $p$ , $q \in (0,1)$ . Additionally, calculating the optimal mean enhances the robustness of the proposed method in the presence of outliers. Unlike the general iteration scheme of the alternating direction method of multiplier (ADMM) algorithms that introduce auxiliary splitting variables, the proposed alternating re-weighted least square (ARwLS) algorithm uses matrix inverse and multiplication computations to obtain analytic solutions, resulting in faster processing speeds for each sub-problem. To further investigate, we provide the computational complexity of each iteration and the theoretical analysis of the convergence property, where the derived solution is a stationary point. Experimental results on synthetic data and several benchmark datasets demonstrate the promising efficiency and efficacy of the proposed clustering method compared to classical and competing algorithms.

Up to now, impaired bone regeneration severely affects the healing of bone fractures, thus bringing tremendous suffering to patients. As a vital mediator between inflammatory response and bone regeneration, M2 macrophage-derived exosomes (M2-Exos) attenuate inflammation and promote tissue repair. However, due to a lack of specific targeting property, M2-Exos will be rapidly eliminated after systematic administration, thus compromising their effectiveness in promoting bone regeneration. To solve this hurdle, we initially harvested and characterized the pro-osteogenic properties of M2-Exos. A bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell (BMSC)-specific aptamer was synthesized and 3-way junction (3WJ) RNA nanoparticles were applied to conjugate the BMSC-specific aptamer and M2-Exos. In vitro assays revealed that M2-Exos bore the representative features of exosomes and significantly promoted the proliferation, migration, and osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs. 3WJ RNA nanoparticles-aptamer functionalized M2-Exos (3WJ-BMSCapt/M2-Exos) maintained the original physical characteristics of M2-Exos, but bore a high specific binding ability to BMSCs. Furthermore, when being systemically administered in the mice model with femoral bone fractures, these functionalized M2-Exos mainly accumulated at the bone fracture site with a slow release of exosomal cargo, thereby significantly accelerating the healing processes compared with the M2-Exos group. Our study indicated that the 3WJ-BMSCapt/M2-Exos with BMSCs targeting ability and controlled release would be a promising strategy to treat bone fractures.Graphical Abstract

Supervised deep learning techniques have been widely explored in real photograph denoising and achieved noticeable performances. However, being subject to specific training data, most current image denoising algorithms can easily be restricted to certain noisy types and exhibit poor generalizability across testing sets. To address this issue, we propose a novel flexible and well-generalized approach, coined as dual meta attention network (DMANet). The DMANet is mainly composed of a cascade of the self-meta attention blocks (SMABs) and collaborative-meta attention blocks (CMABs). These two blocks have two forms of advantages. First, they simultaneously take both spatial and channel attention into account, allowing our model to better exploit more informative feature interdependencies. Second, the attention blocks are embedded with the meta-subnetwork, which is based on metalearning and supports dynamic weight generation. Such a scheme can provide a beneficial means for self and collaborative updating of the attention maps on-the-fly. Instead of directly stacking the SMABs and CMABs to form a deep network architecture, we further devise a three-stage learning framework, where different blocks are utilized for each feature extraction stage according to the individual characteristics of SMAB and CMAB. On five real datasets, we demonstrate the superiority of our approach against the state of the art. Unlike most existing image denoising algorithms, our DMANet not only possesses a good generalization capability but can also be flexibly used to cope with the unknown and complex real noises, making it highly competitive for practical applications.

Topological phonons and magnons potentially enable low-loss, quantum coherent, and chiral transport of information and energy at the atomic scale. Van der Waals magnetic materials are promising to realize such states due to their recently discovered strong interactions among the electronic, spin, and lattice degrees of freedom. Here, we report the first observation of coherent hybridization of magnons and phonons in monolayer antiferromagnet FePSe3by cavity-enhanced magneto-Raman spectroscopy. The robust magnon–phonon cooperativity in the 2D limit occurs even in zero magnetic field, which enables nontrivial band inversion between longitudinal and transverse optical phonons caused by the strong coupling with magnons. The spin and lattice symmetry theoretically guarantee magnetic-field-controlled topological phase transition, verified by nonzero Chern numbers calculated from the coupled spin–lattice model. The 2D topological magnon–phonon hybridization potentially offers a new route toward quantum phononics and magnonics with an ultrasmall footprint.

Biomimetic structures based on the magnetic response have attracted ever-increasing attention in droplet manipulation. Till now, most methods for droplet manipulation by a magnetic response are only applicable to a single droplet. It is still a challenge to achieve on-demand and precise control of multiple droplets (≥2). In this paper, a strategy for on-demand manipulation of multiple droplets based on magnetism-responsive slanted micropillar arrays (MSMAs) is proposed. The Glaco-modified superhydrophobic surface is the basis of multiple-droplet manipulation. The droplet’s motion mode (pinned, unidirectional, and bidirectional) can be readily fine-tuned by changing the volume of droplets and the speed of the magnetic field. The rapid movement of droplets (10–80 mm/s) in the horizontal direction is realized by the unidirectional waves of the micropillar array driven by a specific magnetic field. The bending angle of micropillars can be rapidly and reversibly adjusted from 0 to 90° under the action of a magnetic field. Meanwhile, the liquid-involved light, electric switch, and biomedical detection can be designed by manipulating the droplets on demand. The superiority of MSMAs in multiple-droplet programmable manipulation opens up an avenue for applications in microfluidic and biomedical engineering.

Preserving projection learning has been widely used in feature extraction and selection for unsupervised image classification. Generally, some related methods constructed a graph to represent the nearest neighbor relationships of the data based on the Euclidean distances among different samples, which used 0 or 1 to predefine whether two samples are from the same class. Since a simple Euclidean distance is sensitive to noise, the predefined graph cannot produce exact correlations between the two samples. What is more, the predefined graph cannot reflect the structure of the projected data on a latent subspace when the projection matrix is learned. To solve these problems, in this article a novel adaptive graph embedded preserving projection learning (AGE_PPL) method is proposed, first combining the sparsity-based graph learning and the projection learning as an integral framework for feature extraction and feature selection. In particular, a sparse representation term with $l_{1}$ -norm is exploited in AGE_PPL to achieve the adaptive graph of the data to preserve the local structures among different samples while the projection matrix is learned. Meanwhile, a global-scale constraint is imposed to preserve the global structure of the data on a latent subspace. Therefore, the transformed samples will be more discriminative, allowing margins of the same class to be reduced, and margins among different classes to be enlarged. Experimental results proved the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm by obtaining competitive performances over other baseline and state-of-the-art methods. In addition, the proposed method is very flexible for feature selection and dimensionality reduction.

Accurate identification of lesions is a key step in surgical planning. However, this task mainly exists two challenges: 1) Due to the complex anatomical shapes of different lesions, most segmentation methods only achieve outstanding performance for a specific structure, rather than other lesions with location differences. 2) The huge number of parameters limits existing transformer-based segmentation models. To overcome these problems, we propose a novel slight dual-path network (SDPN) to segment variable location lesions or organs with significant differences accurately. First, we design a dual-path module to integrate local with global features without obvious memory consumption. Second, a novel Multi-spectrum attention module is proposed to pay further attention to detailed information, which can automatically adapt to the variable segmentation target. Then, the compression module based on tensor ring decomposition is designed to compress convolutional and transformer structures. In the experiment, four datasets, including three benchmark datasets and a clinical dataset, are used to evaluate SDPN. Results of the experiments show that SDPN performs better than other start-of-the-art methods for brain tumor, liver tumor, endometrial tumor and cardiac segmentation. To ensure the generalizability, we train the network on Kvasir-SEG and test on CVC-ClinicDB which collected from a different institution. The quantitative analysis shows that the clinical evaluation results are consistent with the experts. Therefore, this model may be a potential candidate for the segmentation of lesions and organs segmentation with variable locations in clinical applications.

Objectives: The accurate prediction of osteoarthritis (OA) severity in patients can be helpful to make the proper decision of intervention. This study aims to build up a powerful model to assess predictive risk factors and severity of knee osteoarthritis (KOA) in the clinical scenario. Methods: A total of 4796 KOA cases and 1205 features were selected by feature selections from the public OA database, Osteoarthritis Initiative (OAI). Six machine learning-based models were constructed and compared for the accuracy of OA prediction. The gradient-boosting decision tree was used to identify important prediction features in the extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) model. The performance of models was evaluated by F1-score. Results: Twenty features were determined as predictors for KOA risk and severity, including the subject characteristics, knee symptoms/risk factors and physical exam. The XGBoost model demonstrated 100% prediction accuracy for 54.7% of examined samples, and the remaining 45.3% of samples showed Kellgren and Lawrence (KL) gradings very close to the actual levels. It showed the highest prediction accuracy with an F1-score of 0.553 among the tested six models. Conclusions: We demonstrate that the XGBoost is the best model for the prediction of KOA severity in the six examined models. In addition, 20 risk features were determined as the essential predictors of KOA, including the physical exam, knee symptoms/risk factors and subject characteristics, which may be useful for the identification of high-risk KOA cases and for making appropriate treatment decisions as well.

Hand pose recognition has been one of the most fundamental tasks in computer vision and pattern recognition, and substantial effort has been devoted to this field. However, owing to lack of public large‐scale benchmark dataset, there is little literature to specially study pen‐holding hand pose (PHHP) recognition. As an attempt to fill this gap, in this paper, a PHHP image dataset, consisting of 18,000 PHHP samples is established. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the largest vision‐based PHHP dataset ever collected. Furthermore, the authors design a coarse‐to‐fine PHHP recognition network consisting of a coarse multi‐feature learning network and a fine pen‐grasping‐specific feature learning network, where the coarse learning network aims to extensively exploit the multiple discriminative features by sharing a hand‐shape‐based spatial attention information, and the fine learning network further learns the pen‐grasping‐specific features by embedding a couple of convolutional block attention modules into three convolution blocks models. Experimental results show that the authors’ proposed method can achieve a very competitive PHHP recognition performance when compared with the baseline recognition models.

Extracellular vesicle (EV) delivery of TNF-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) (EV-T) has been shown to be highly efficient for cancer treatment when combined with the potent cyclin-dependent kinase (CDK) inhibitor dinaciclib (SCH727965, Dina). However, only topical administration was previously tested for cancer treatment, leaving unknown the efficacy of systemic therapy by EV-T and Dina. In this study we hypothesize that the systemic application of EV-T and Dina can be performed through EV-mediated co-delivery of TRAIL and Dina. Dina was first post-loaded into EV-Ts by sonication to prepare EV-mediated co-delivery of TRAIL and Dina, designated Dina@EV-T. Then Dina@EV-Ts were shown to be stable, readily endocytosed into cancer cells, and highly effective at inducing intensive apoptosis in resistant cancer lines but not in normal cells. Moreover, systemically infused Dina@EV-Ts showed evident tumor tropism suggesting their good potential for tumour-targeted delivery of therapeutics. Importantly, the systemic therapy with Dina@EV-Ts showed the best efficacy in vivowhen compared with other treatments. The augmented therapeutic efficacy appeared to be associated with the concomitant suppression of prosurvival CDK1 and anti-apoptotic proteins including CDK9, cFLIP, MCL-1, BCL-2 and Survivin by Dina@EV-T treatment. Additionally, there were no adverse side effects observed for the systemic Dina@EV-T therapy. In conclusion, our data suggest that the co-delivery of TRAIL and Dina by EVs potentially constitutes a novel tumour-targeted therapy, which is highly effective and safe for the treatment of refractory tumors.

Glycated proteins are the main source of dietary advanced glycation end products (AGEs). Glycated proteins are enzymatically hydrolyzed in the gastrointestinal tract, which releases more absorbable and smaller potentially harmful AGEs. This study investigated the inhibitory effect of catechin on AGE release from glycated bovine serum albumin (G-BSA) during gastrointestinal digestion. Catechin inhibited AGE release during gastrointestinal digestion, especially in the gastric digestion stage. Additionally, catechin altered these peptides in the small intestine by reducing G-BSA digestibility. The proposed mechanism involves interactions between catechin and G-BSA/digestive enzymes, inhibiting digestive enzyme activity and changing the conformation of G-BSA. Catechin reduced G-BSA β-sheet content and protected the helical conformation. Moreover, catechin enhanced the antioxidant capacity of G-BSA, which could attenuate postprandial oxidative stress in the gastrointestinal tract caused by the release of AGEs. This study improves our understanding of the nutritional and health effects of catechin on dietary AGEs during gastrointestinal digestion.

Early T-cell precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ETP-ALL) is an aggressive subtype of T-cell ALL. Although genetic mutations hyperactivating cytokine receptor/Ras signaling are prevalent in ETP-ALL, it remains unknown how activated Ras signaling contributes to ETP-ALL. Here, we find that in addition to the frequent oncogenic RAS mutations, wild-type (WT) KRAS transcript level was significantly downregulated in human ETP-ALL cells. Similarly, loss of WT Kras in NrasQ61R/+ mice promoted hyperactivation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) signaling, thymocyte hyperproliferation, and expansion of the ETP compartment. Kras−/−; NrasQ61R/+ mice developed early onset of T-cell malignancy that recapitulates many biological and molecular features of human ETP-ALL. Mechanistically, RNA-sequencing analysis and quantitative proteomics study identified that Rasgrp1, a Ras guanine nucleotide exchange factor, was greatly downregulated in mouse and human ETP-ALL. Unexpectedly, hyperactivated Nras/ERK signaling suppressed Rasgrp1 expression and reduced Rasgrp1 level led to increased ERK signaling, thereby establishing a positive feedback loop to augment Nras/ERK signaling and promote cell proliferation. Corroborating our cell line data, Rasgrp1 haploinsufficiency induced Rasgrp1 downregulation and increased phosphorylated ERK level and ETP expansion in NrasQ61R/+ mice. Our study identifies Rasgrp1 as a negative regulator of Ras/ERK signaling in oncogenic Nras-driven ETP-like leukemia.

In order to satisfy the needs of different applications and more complex intelligent devices, smart control of surface wettability will be necessary and desirable, which gradually become a hot spot and focus in the field of interface wetting. Herein, we review interfacial wetting states related to switchable wettability on superwettable materials, including several classical wetting models and liquid adhesive behaviors based on the surface of natural creatures with special wettability. This review mainly focuses on the recent developments of the smart surfaces with switchable wettability and the corresponding regulatory mechanisms under external stimuli, which is mainly governed by the transformation of surface chemical composition and geometrical structures. Among that, various external stimuli such as physical stimulation (temperature, light, electric, magnetic, mechanical stress), chemical stimulation (pH, ion, solvent) and dual or multi-triggered stimulation have been sought out to realize the regulation of surface wettability. Moreover, we also summarize the applications of smart surfaces in different fields, such as oil/water separation, programmable transportation, anti-biofouling, detection and delivery, smart soft robotic etc.Furthermore, current limitations and future perspective in the development of smart wetting surfaces are also given. This review aims to offer deep insights into the recent developments and responsive mechanisms in smart biomimetic surfaces with switchable wettability under external various stimuli, so as to provide a guidance for the design of smart surfaces and expand the scope of both fundamental research and practical applications.

Reconstruction of bone loss in the alveolar ridge has long been challenging. Autologous bone grafts are considered as the "golden standard", while little research has focused on how to repair pronounced alveolar bone defects after autologous bone graft failure. The aim of this study was to detail a method based on the titanium mesh technique coupled with particulate coral hydroxyapatite to solve the Onlay graft failure. With bone deficiency in the #11 and #24- #25 regions, we harvested two autologous bone blocks for reconstruction. Two weeks after transplantation, the graft in the #11 region had healed uneventfully, while the graft in the anterior mandible became infected due to soft tissue dehiscence. After removal of the failed autologous bone block, pure coral hydroxyapatite stabilized within titanium mesh was used for alveolar rehabilitation. Six months later, the width of local alveolar bone was evaluated. After the titanium mesh was removed, a biopsy was performed to study bone regeneration by micro computed tomography and histology, following by a standard Straumann® implant insertion. Though there was wound dehiscence 14 days post bone augmentation, repeated local rinsing and anti-inflammation therapy controlled the inflammatory reaction. The total horizontal bone gain was 4.2 ± 0.5 mm. Micro computed tomography revealed the closer coral hydroxyapatite was to the host bone, the more was resorbed and bone regenerated. Histology showed mature lamellar bone structures, with evident residual coral hydroxyapatite. A 3- year follow-up revealed stable bone around the dental implant and successful function of the implant-born prosthesis. This study first proposed particulate coral hydroxyapatite sheltered by titanium mesh method was a promising solution in handling alveolar bone augmentation failure. More cases are needed for further research to form an efficient treatment procedure.

Flurbiprofen, a hydrophobic COX inhibitor, was coordinated axially with oxoplatin to form a new conjugate cis, cis, trans-[Pt(IV)(NH3)2Cl2(flurbiprofen)2]. The successful synthsis of this new conjugate was confirmed by 1H, 13C and 195Pt NMR. The potential of this conjugate being reduced to cisplatin and subsequently exerting its DNA cross-linking ability was verified using cyclic voltammetry (CV), HPLC and mass spectrum (MS). This conjugate showed markedly higher cytotoxicity on many cancer cell lines than cisplatin, flurbiprofen and physical mixture (mol ratio, cisplatin: flurbiprofen=1:2) of them. This is consistent with the result of apoptosis-inducing assay. This conjugate spontaneously assembles carrier-free nanoparticles in aqueous solution, which is confirmed by DLS, TEM, SEM and AFM, thus facilitates cellular uptake, markedly improves its cytotoxicity and apoptosis-inducing ability in vitro.

In this work, plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) with a fluoride-based electrolyte was performed on Mg-0.45Ca-xZn (x = 0, 0.45, 1.0, 2.0 wt.%) alloys to enhance their degradation properties. These PEO coatings were composed of a porous layer and a barrier layer for alloys with Zn ≥ 0.45 wt.%, while the coating on Mg-0.45Ca alloy was consisted of a dense inner layer and a porous outer layer. The content of Zn in the alloy has no significant effect on the hardness, adhesion strength and composition of the PEO coating. All coated-Mg-0.45Ca-xZn samples in this work showed decent anti-degradation properties in the simulated body fluid (SBF). Among them, PEO coatings on Mg-0.45Ca-1.0Zn and Mg-0.45Ca-2.0Zn alloys could provide excellent protection to the substrate over 3 months and exhibited good biocompatibility with Grade 0-1 of cytotoxicity, which were expected to be applied in the biomedical field. Besides, PEO process in this work enabled a high-quality coating to be formed on Mg-Ca-Zn bone screws.

Immediate reward preference in repetitive negative thinking (RNT) has a high clinical correlation with a variety of maladaptive behaviors, whereas episodic future thinking (EFT) may be conducive to dealing with non-adaptive thinking and decision-making.

Egg white proteins are an excellent source of nutrition, with high biological and technological values. However, their limited functional properties prevent their widespread industrial applications. In this study, the ovalbumin functionality was improved via glycation by Maillard reaction with d-lactose. The free amino groups and sodium dodecyl sulfate–polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis profile were determined, confirming that glycation occurred between ovalbumin and lactose. The emulsification of the conjugate was 2.69-fold higher than that of ovalbumin at pH 7.0 after glycation. The thermal stability also improved remarkably. The glycated protein products were used to form an oil–water nanoemulsion for polymethoxyflavone-rich aged orange peel oil. The resulting nanoemulsion showed good pH, thermal, and storage stabilities.

NRAS Q61 mutations are prevalent in advanced/relapsed multiple myeloma (MM) and correlate with poor patient outcomes. Thus, we generated a novel MM model by conditionally activating expression of endogenous NrasQ61R and an MYC transgene in germinal center (GC) B cells (VQ mice). VQ mice developed a highly malignant MM characterized by a high proliferation index, hyperactivation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase and AKT signaling, impaired hematopoiesis, widespread extramedullary disease, bone lesions, kidney abnormalities, preserved programmed cell death protein 1 and T-cell immunoreceptor with immunoglobulin and immunoreceptor tyrosine-based inhibition motif domain immune-checkpoint pathways, and expression of human high-risk MM gene signatures. VQ MM mice recapitulate most of the biological and clinical features of human advanced/high-risk MM. These MM phenotypes are serially transplantable in syngeneic recipients. Two MM cell lines were also derived to facilitate future genetic manipulations. Combination therapies based on MEK inhibition significantly prolonged the survival of VQ mice with advanced-stage MM. Our study provides a strong rationale to develop MEK inhibition–based therapies for treating advanced/relapsed MM.

The application of tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) in clinic has revolutionized chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) treatment, but fails to eliminate leukemia stem cells (LSCs), which are considered as roots of drug resistance and disease relapse. Thus, eradication of LSCs may be a promising strategy for curing CML. In this study, we found that protein lysine methyltransferase G9A was overexpressed in CML LSCs. The upregulation of G9A by BCR-ABL was independent on its tyrosine kinase activity. Knockdown of G9A by shRNAs or pharmacological inhibition of G9A by UNC0642 significantly suppressed survival and impaired self-renewal capacity of CML LSCs. Inhibition of G9a eradicated LSCs in CML mice driven by BCR-ABL gene and dramatically prolonged survival of the mice. Ex vivo treatment with G9A inhibitor inhibited long-term engraftment of CML CD34+cells in immunodeficient mice. Mechanically, tumor suppressor SOX6 was identified as a direct target of G9A in CML LSCs by RNA-seq analysis. Silencing Sox6 at least partially rescued G9a knockdown-mediated LSCs elimination in vivo. Our findings improve the understanding of LSC regulation network and validate G9A as a therapeutic target in CML LSCs. Targeting G9A may be considered as an additional strategy for the treatment of patients with CML.

Microbial iron reduction is a ubiquitous biogeochemical process driven by diverse microorganisms in a variety of environments. However, it is often difficult to separate the biological from the geochemical controls on bioreduction of Fe(III) oxides. Here, we investigated the primary driving factor(s) that mediate secondary iron mineral formation over a broad range of environmental conditions using a single dissimilatory iron reducer, Orenia metallireducensstrain Z6. A total of 17 distinct geochemical conditions were tested with differing pH (6.5–8.5), temperature (22–50 °C), salinity (2–20% NaCl), anions (phosphate and sulfate), electron shuttle (anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate), and Fe(III) oxide mineralogy (ferrihydrite, lepidocrocite, goethite, hematite, and magnetite). The observed rates and extent of iron reduction differed significantly with kintbetween 0.186 and 1.702 mmol L–1day–1and Fe(II) production ranging from 6.3% to 83.7% of the initial Fe(III). Using X-ray absorption and scattering techniques (EXAFS and XRD), we identified and assessed the relationship between secondary minerals and the specific environmental conditions. It was inferred that the observed bifurcation of the mineralization pathways may be mediated by differing extents of Fe(II) sorption on the remaining Fe(III) minerals. These results expand our understanding of the controls on biomineralization during microbial iron reduction and aid the development of practical applications.

Purpose: In the present study, we aimed to evaluate the early postoperative rotational stability of TECNIS toric intraocular lens (IOL) and analyse its correlation with preoperative and intraoperative parameters. Methods: A total of 102 eyes from 87 cataract patients who underwent implantation of TECNIS toric IOL during July 2016 to November 2017 were enrolled in this retrospective study. Preoperative parameters including corneal astigmatism, axial length (AL), lens thickness (LT), anterior chamber depth (ACD) and sulcus-to-sulcus (STS), were determined. The area of capsulorhexis was measured with Rhinoceros 5.0 software. The follow-up examinations including the residual astigmatism (RAS) and postoperative toric IOL axis, were performed at 1 month and 3 months after surgery. Results: RAS was −0.84 ± 0.88 D at 1 month and −0.81 ± 0.89 D at 3 months after surgery. The rotation of toric IOL at 3 months was 4.83 ± 3.65°. The Pearson’s r of ACD, horizontal and vertical STS, and toric IOL target axis was 0.011, 0.039, 0.045 and 0.082. The toric IOL rotation was positively correlated with the area of capsulorhexis (r= 0.522, P= 0.0003), LT (r= 0.288, P= 0.003) and AL (r= 0.259, P= 0.009). As for the area of capsulorhexis, the regressive equation was: y= 0.682 × −13.105, demonstrating that the diameter of capsulorhexis should be controlled within 5.8 mm to maintain the toric IOL rotation within 5.0°. Conclusions: TECNIS toric IOLs possessed great early postoperative rotational stability. The area of capsulorhexis, AL and LT were positively correlated with postoperative rotational stability. A capsulorhexis within 5.8 mm had an important significance in improving rotational stability.

Objective: Based on bioinformatics, differentially expressed gene data of drug-resistance in gastric cancer were analyzed, screened and mined through modeling and network modeling to find valuable data associated with multi-drug resistance of gastric cancer. Methods: First, data sets were preprocessed from three aspects: data processing, data annotation and classification, and functional clustering. Secondly, based on the preprocessed data, each classified primary gene regulatory network was constructed by mining interactions among the genes. This paper computed the values of each node in each classified primary gene regulatory network and ranked these nodes according to their scores. On the basis of this, the appropriate core node was selected and the corresponding core network was developed. Results and Conclusion: Finally, core network modules were analyzed, which were mined. After the correlation analysis, the result showed that the constructed network module had 20 core genes. This module contained valuable data associated with multi-drug resistance in gastric cancer.

Purple sweet potato is known as a rich source of protein and anthocyanins. Anthocyanins can form complexes with protein present in food products through non-covalent forces or covalent bonds during processing, transportation, and storage as their protein affinity. We evaluated the hypoglycemic effects of protein-bound anthocyanin compounds of purple sweet potato (p-BAC-PSP) and free anthocyanin compounds of purple sweet potato (FAC-PSP) in high-fat diet/streptozotocin-induced diabetic mice. The results showed that administration of both p-BAC-PSP and FAC-PSP improved diabetic condition, as evidenced by the improvement of glucose tolerance and lipid metabolism, and the decrease of oxidative stress and liver damage. For the mechanism study, we have found that p-BAC-PSP and FAC-PSP induced the expression of AMP-activated protein kinase in liver. With p-BAC-PSP or FAC-PSP treatment, glucose transporter type 2, the protein levels of glucokinase, and insulin receptor α were found to be improved significantly (p< 0.05). Glycolysis key genes, phosphofructokinase and pyruvate kinase, were upregulated in two treatment groups, while gluconeogenic genes, glucose-6-phosphatase and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase, were downregulated. Our findings suggested that p-BAC-PSP has great potential as a dietary supplement with hypoglycemic activity for general, pre-diabetic, and diabetic population.

Background: Fluorine 18 (18F) fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) has limitations in staging hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The recently introduced 18F-labeled fibroblast-activation protein inhibitor (FAPI) has shown promising prospects in detection of HCC lesions. This study aimed to investigate the initial staging and restaging performance of 18F-FAPI PET/CT compared to 18F-FDG PET/CT in HCC. Methods: This prospective study enrolled histologically confirmed HCC patients from March 2021 to September 2022. All patients were examined with 18F-FDG PET/CT and 18F-FAPI PET/CT within 1 week. The maximum standard uptake value (SUVmax), tumor-to-background ratio (TBR), and diagnostic accuracy were compared between the two modalities. Results: A total of 67 patients (57 men; median age, 57 [range, 32–83] years old) were included. 18F-FAPI PET showed higher SUVmaxand TBR values than 18F-FDG PET in the intrahepatic lesions (SUVmax: 6.7 vs. 4.3, P&lt; 0.0001; TBR: 3.9 vs. 1.7, P&lt; 0.0001). In diagnostic performance, 18F-FAPI PET/CT had higher detection rate than 18F-FDG PET/CT in intrahepatic lesions [92.2% (238/258) vs 41.1% (106/258), P&lt; 0.0001] and lymph node metastases [97.9% (126/129) vs 89.1% (115/129), P= 0.01], comparable in distant metastases [63.6% (42/66) vs 69.7% (46/66), P> 0.05]. 18F-FAPI PET/CT detected primary tumors in 16 patients with negative 18F-FDG, upgraded T-stages in 12 patients and identified 4 true positive findings for local recurrence than 18F-FDG PET, leading to planning therapy changes in 47.8% (32/67) of patients. Conclusions: 18F-FAPI PET/CT identified more primary lesions, lymph node metastases than 18F-FDG PET/CT in HCC, which is helpful to improve the clinical management of HCC patients. Very-lysine-rich calf thymus histone proteins form disordered structure and hydrophobic interaction-driven aggregates in weakly acidic solution. We reported that the conjugation of diiron dithiolate complex to the lysine residues induced formation of helical conformation and condensed nanoassemblies with a high loading capacity up to 18.7 wt %. The incorporated diiron dithiolate complex showed photocatalytic activity for hydrogen evolution in aqueous solutions, with a turnover number (based on [FeFe] catalyst moiety) up to 359 that was more than 6 times that of the free catalyst. The increase of helical conformation in proteins was well correlated to the increasing enhancement of photocatalytic activity. We demonstrated that the [FeFe]–hydrogenase-mimic biohybrid system based on the photocatalyst-induced protein conformational conversion and reassembly is efficient for hydrogen generation regardless of the relatively large size.
