The article focuses on Medellín, Columbia's change from a city with a murderous reputation to a peaceful one, thanks to increased security that has enabled the economy to thrive. Particular attention is given to the positive changes that took place following President Alvaro Uribe's inauguration, like removing right-wing paramilitary organizations and confronting the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Columbia (FARC) and other guerrilla groups. Also discussed is Mayor Sergio Fajardo's efforts to change the city's reputation.
