3. Electoral Cross-dressing: The Role Reversal Campaigns of Nicolas Sarkozy and François Hollande in the 2012 Presidential Election
- Author

- Abstract
This article analyses and evaluates the 2012 presidential campaigns of Nicolas Sarkozy and François Hollande. It argues that these were to a large extent characterized by role reversal: Sarkozy was obliged to adopt the role of challenger, while Hollande assumed the status of incumbent. Yet it is also clear that this role reversal was not complete. Hollande enjoyed many of the advantages of the challenger position, while in contrast Sarkozy suffered from many of the disadvantages of incumbency, notably his mixed policy record in office and a negative public response to his presidential style.

5. Ultrastructure of spermiogenesis and the spermatozoon in Taenia crassiceps strobilae WFU strain (Cestoda, Cyclophyllidea, Taeniidae) from golden hamsters

- Abstract
Strobilae from Taenia crassiceps (WFU strain) were obtained from outbred hamsters ( Mesocricetus auratus) by feeding them viable metacestodes maintained by intraperitoneal passage in female Balb/c mice. Mature and gravid proglottids from strobilae were recovered from hamster intestines and fixed for light and electron microscopy. By light microscopy, the expected structure of taeniid proglottids was observed. Ultrastructural analysis of ten proglottids showed that testicular follicles and vas deferens contained filiform spermatids, with a single axoneme, and an elongated helicoidal nucleus inserted between the axoneme and the spiraled cortical microtubules. At the apical cone, a single crest-like body was found and mature spermatids also exhibited transverse intracytoplasmic walls. The morphology and characters of the spermatids in T. crassiceps conform to type III spermiogenesis, which has been described in other taeniids.

10. An indirect, quantifiable assay for cytophilic antibody
- Author
-
Kuhn, Raymond E. and Cassida, Gerald W.
- Abstract
An indirect, quantifiable method for in vitro measurement of anti-SRBC antibody cytophilic for macrophages is described. The procedure consists of adding dilutions of normal or immune serum to 4 × 106macrophages in 35 mm plastic petri dishes for 1 h at 4°C. The plates are thoroughly washed to remove unbound antibody and 2 × 10751Cr-SRBC are added for 2 h at 4°C. Total cpm in the plates is determined, non-bound 51Cr-SRBC are removed by washing and the plates are re-counted. Percent binding is calculated from these two values. The assay provides data consistent with visual determinations of number of SRBC/100 macrophages but has less variability and is performed more rapidly and easily than the visual method.

14. Experimental American Leishmaniasis in the Brazilian Squirrel Monkey (Saimiri sciureus): Lesions, Hematology, Cellular, and Humoral Immune Responses

- Abstract
Unulcerated cutaneous lesions appeared and persisted in squirrel monkeys experimentally infected with Leishmania braziliensis braziliensisor L. b. panamensis. Peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) numbers increased following infection, and cultured PBMCs from infected monkeys proliferated in response to parasite antigens. The responses of PBMCs to mitogens were not suppressed in infected monkeys. Elevated levels of leishmania‐specific immunoglobulins M and G were also observed. Thus, the squirrel monkey is susceptible to American leishmaniasis and is capable of responding to the infection with measurable cellular and humoral immunity.

15. Trypanosoma cruzi-induced suppressor substance
- Author

- Abstract
It is reported that mice infected withTrypanosoma cruzi accumulate a suppressor substance (SS) in their sera which, when passively transferred to normal syngeneic recipients, can inhibit primary and secondary antibody responses of spleen and lymph-node cells to T-cell-dependent and -independent antigens; spleen cells were found to be suppressed earlier and to a greater degree than were lymph-node cells. Studies on the effects of the SS on normal cells in vitro also revealed that spleen cells were affected earlier than lymph-node cells, although there were no demonstrable differences in the maximum suppression effected by the SS between the two sources of lymphoid cells. Whereas normal mice could be passively immunosuppressed in vivo with the SS, it was found that serum from passively suppressed recipients did not retain measurable quantities of the SS in their sera, indicating that the substance was removed from circulation at an early stage or was diluted beyond effective concentrations. In in vivo transfers of the SS toH-2-similar and -dissimilar recipients it was found that the effectiveness of the SS related to theH-2 haplotype of the recipients.

16. Suppression of Humoral Responses During Trypanosoma cruziInfections in Mice
- Author

- Abstract
C57BL/6 mice exhibit low parasitemias and often survive Trypanosoma cruziinfections, whereas C3H(He) mice die during the acute phase with relatively high parasitemias. The present study showed that both strains of mice develop nonspecific immunosuppression to challenge with sheep erythrocytes during the course of infection. Several major differences in immunosuppression-related phenomena between the two strains of mice were determined, yet there is no apparent relationship between immunosuppression and resistance to T. cruzi. Both the number of direct plaque-forming cells and the titer of 2-mercaptoethanol-sensitive agglutinating antibody were significantly lower on day 11 for C57BL/6 mice and day 9 for C3H(He) mice. The number of indirect plaque-forming cells and the titer of mercaptoethanol-resistant agglutinating antibody were reduced by day 36 of infection in C57BL/6 mice and 13 days postinfection in C3H(He) mice. In both strains the degree of humoral response suppression of mice increased concomitant with the period of infection, but was not correlated with the changes in spleen cell numbers. Preliminary experiments designed to explore the mechanism underlying the induction and maintenance of immunosuppression in this hostparasite model disclosed the presence of suppressor substance in the serum of T. cruzi-infected mice. The passive transfer of serum from infected mice to syngeneic recipients elicited a state of immunosuppression to sheep erythrocytes, but did not diminish anti-erythrocyte activity in allogeneic recipients. The induction of immunosuppression in normal mice was further found to be dependent on the interval between serum transfer and challenge with antigen. No quantitative differences existed between the magnitude of suppressed humoral responses in mice infected for varying lengths of time and recipients of serum collected from similarly infected mice.

19. Immunology and Immunoregulation of Parasitic Hematozoan Infections
- Author

KUHN, RAYMOND E.
- Abstract
The hematozoan parasites comprise a medically important group of organisms which have received increasing attention in recent years. Malaria, particularly, has garnered significant research effort in regards to the development of sporozoite-specific vaccines. However, initial enthusiasm for an effective vaccine has been dampened as a result of field studies showing the presence of surface epitope-specific antibodies in drugcured and subsequently reinfected patients. Of importance, increasing evidence exists that cell-mediated immune mechanisms may play a central role in protection and pathogenesis in malaria. New evidence to unravel the mechanisms and significance of immunosuppression in leishmaniasis and Chagas' disease continues to implicate a complex circuit involving suppressor macrophages, lymphokine deficiencies, and atypical behavior of T helper cell populations. The African trypanosomes provide the cellular and molecular biologists challenges in understanding the basis and regulation of variant-specific glycoproteins (VSG) and their significance in immunity and pathogenesis. An important recent determination is that there appears to be little or no correlation between expression of a specific VSG and pathogenesis. The present status of research on the hematozoan parasites reestablishes the remarkable evolutionary accomplishments of these organisms to survive in the hostile immune environment of their vertebrate hosts.
