Background:Understanding the frailty levels of older patients undergoing surgery and chemotherapy will contribute to timely and reliable care practices and improve care outcomes.Aims:To determine the frailty of cancer patients who received chemotherapy treatment after surgery.Methods:This descriptive study included 192 Turkish patients aged over 60 years who received chemotherapy after surgery for cancer. Data were collected using a patient survey and the Edmonton Frailty Scale.Results:The average age of the participants was 66.3±5.3 years. Around 40% (40.6%) of the sample were diagnosed with breast cancer. The Edmonton Frailty Scale score of the group was 6.6 (SD±3.7). A quarter of the sample (22.9%) were at risk of frailty. Frailty levels were higher in older individuals with gastrointestinal cancers and other cancer groups compared with patients with breast cancer (p<0.001); patients with additional chronic diseases other than cancer (p=0.004); and in those with a history of falling and hospitalisation in the past year (p<0.001).Conclusions:Older patients with gastrointestinal cancer, additional chronic disease and a history of falling and hospitalisation within the past year should be evaluated closely for frailty before and during chemotherapy. It is crucial to consider the patient's vulnerability when making care and treatment decisions for older patients with cancer. Understanding the frailty levels of older patients who undergo surgery and receive chemotherapy can help health professionals to decide on timely and reliable care practices and improve care outcomes.

Durante la anestesia general pueden lesionarse los nervios en la región faringolaríngea. Los nervios más a menudo lesionados son el hipogloso, lingual y laríngeo recurrente. Las lesiones pueden surgir como resultado de varios factores que pueden ser, durante la laringoscopia, intubación endotraqueal e inserción del tubo y por presión del balón, ventilación con mascarilla, maniobra aérea triple, vía aérea orofaríngea, modo de inserción del tubo, posición de la cabeza y del cuello, y aspiración.

As lesões podem surgir em decorrência de vários fatores, como, por exemplo, durante a laringoscopia, intubação endotraqueal e inserção de tubo e por pressão do balão, ventilação com máscara, manobra aérea tripla, via aérea orofaríngea, modo de inserção do tubo, posição da cabeça e do pescoço e aspiração.

Nerve damage may occur in the pharyngolaryngeal region during general anesthesia. The most frequently injured nerves are the hypoglossal, lingual and recurrent laryngeal. These injuries may arise in association with several factors, such as laryngoscopy, endotracheal intubation and tube insertion, cuff pressure, mask ventilation, the triple airway maneuver, the oropharyngeal airway, manner of intubation tube insertion, head and neck position and aspiration.

We report on a patient who underwent maxillectomy and subsequent coronoid-temporalis flap reconstruction of the surgical defect to treat a maxillary sinus carcinoma invading the middle skull base. The patient underwent successful reconstruction of the middle skull base and displayed acceptable functional result. Middle skull base defects can be successfully repaired using a local coronoid-temporalis pedicled flap. The coronoid process of the mandible is advantageous as a local flap because it is close to the skull base defects and can easily be dissected from adjacent tissues. The use of a coronoid-temporalis pedicled flap offers excellent results without the need for further extensive surgery.
