- Abstract
This article focuses on the increasing number of gays in the armed forces of the U.S. as of 1994. Under order from the U.S. Congress or the courts, or under pressure from gays within its ranks and activists outside, the military will sooner or later decide that it must deviate from its straight and narrow policy of exclusion of homosexuals, and that it can no longer ignore the large gay population in its barracks. The size and importance of the military institution make that a crucial event in social history. And the special role of the services as a repository for values that are antithetical to sexual liberation means that the conflict will be sharp and the eventual changes far-reaching.
