Shifting to distance learning due to COVID-19 may decrease teacher support and increase family conflicts, potentially increasing anxiety. Nevertheless, there is scarce information on this topic among disability and/or immigrant-origin groups. Thus, we investigated whether these minority groups reported more anxiety than the reference group—Finnish-origin youth without disabilities—and whether unmet needs for support in distance learning and family conflicts mediated differences in anxiety during the pandemic. Differences in these mediators were also investigated. Population-based data of 165,033 youth aged 12 to 29 from the cross-sectional Finnish School Health Promotion study were obtained in 2021 using total population sampling. Logistic regressions with Stata were used to investigate the differences between the target (youth with disabilities, immigrant backgrounds, or both of these characteristics) and reference groups. The Karlson–Holm–Breen method was used to test for mediation. The groups with disabilities (odds ratio [OR] = 4.14 [95% confidence interval (CI): 4.02–4.27]), immigrant backgrounds (OR = 1.15 [95% CI: 1.06–1.25]), or both of these characteristics (OR = 5.03 [95% CI: 4.59–5.52]) reported anxiety more often than the reference group. The difference between the minority and reference groups in unmet needs in distance learning and family conflicts were significant. Immigrant-origin youth with disabilities were most vulnerable to family conflicts, and the groups with disabilities were more prone to unmet needs. Unmet needs and family conflicts accounted for 28% of the association between immigrant-origin youth without disabilities and anxiety, whereas the mediating percentage was smaller for immigrant-origin youth with disabilities (13%) and Finnish-origin youth with disabilities (11%). Immigrant-origin youth with disabilities need targeted support to prevent anxiety. Alleviating family conflicts and unmet needs in distance learning during crises could help decrease anxiety. Objective: To provide further knowledge about the longitudinal association between sleep duration and overweight in infants.Study Design: The data for this study are from the CHILD-SLEEP birth cohort (n = 1679). The sleep data are based on parent-reported total sleep duration collected at 3, 8, 18, and 24 months. For a subgroup of 8-month old participants (n = 350), an actigraph recording was also made. Growth data were derived from the child health clinic records. A logistic regression model was used to study the association between sleep duration and later weight development.Results: Shorter sleep duration in 3-month-old infants was cross-sectionally associated with lower weight-for-length/height (all P values ≤ .026) and body mass index (all P values ≤ .038). Moreover, short sleep duration at the age of 3 months was associated with greater weight-for-length/height z score at the age of 24 months (aOR 1.56; 95% CI 1.02-2.38) as well as with a predisposition to gain excess weight between 3 and 24 months of age (aOR 2.61; 95% CI 1.75-3.91). No significant associations were found between sleep duration at 8, 18, or 24 months and concurrent or later weight status. Actigraph-measured short night-time sleep duration at the age of 8 months was associated with greater weight-for-length at the age of 24 months (aOR 1.51; 95% CI 1.02-2.23).Conclusions: Short total sleep duration at the age of 3 months and short night-time sleep duration at the age of 8 months are associated with the risk of gaining excess weight at 24 months of age. Previous studies have found that troubled childhood family conditions have long-term detrimental effects on a person’s economic situation in adulthood. However, the mechanisms behind these effects are unclear. The aim of this study was to examine the associations between poor adolescent family relationships and the economic adversity in mid-adulthood and whether different adversities in early adulthood mediate this association. Participants of a Finnish cohort study at 16 years in 1983 were followed up when aged 22, 32 and 42 (N = 1334). Family relationships were measured according to adolescents’ perceived lack of emotional parental support (e.g. My mother is close to me (reversed)), lack of parental support in the individuation process and poor atmosphere at home. We analysed the direct effects of poor family relationships at age 16 on the economic adversity at age 42 and also indirect effects via various adversities at ages 22 and 32. The examined adversities were poor somatic and mental health, lack of an intimate relationship, low education and heavy drinking. Poor adolescent family relationships were associated with economic adversity in mid-adulthood. For women, poor relationships were associated with their economic adversity (42y) through poor mental health and low education in early adulthood. For men, the effect was transmitted via low education, although this was not the case after adjusting for school achievement in adolescence. The quality of family relationships in adolescence is associated with an individual’s economic situation well into mid-adulthood in women. Moreover, this association was not explained by family structure and parental SEP in adolescence. Early promotion of parent-child interaction, as well as health and education of individuals from troubled family conditions, might reduce economic inequality in adulthood. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present study examined the trajectory of self-esteem from adolescence to mid-adulthood and its predictors in adolescence in a prospective cohort sample with a 26-year follow-up. Participants of a Finnish cohort study in 1983 at 16 years ( N = 2194) were followed up at ages 22 ( N = 1656), 32 ( N = 1471) and 42 ( N = 1334) years. Self-esteem development was analyzed using latent growth curve models with parental socioeconomic status (SES), parental divorce, school achievement, daily smoking, and heavy drinking as time invariant covariates. Self-esteem grew linearly from 16 to 32 years, but stabilized after that with no growth between 32 and 42 years. Males had significantly higher self-esteem throughout the follow-up, although females had a faster growth rate. Better school performance and higher parental SES were associated with a higher initial level of self-esteem among both genders, while parental divorce among females and daily smoking among males were associated with a lower initial level of self-esteem. Among females the growth rate of self-esteem was practically unaffected by the studied covariates. Among males, however, the initial differences in self-esteem favouring those from a higher SES background were indicated to diminish, while the differences between non-smokers and smokers were indicated to increase. The studied adolescent covariates combined had only limited predictive value for the later self-esteem development. However, the effects of any covariate on the level and slope of the self-esteem trajectory, even if small, should be assessed in combination in order to identify whether they lead to converging, diverging or constantly equidistant self-esteem trajectories. The findings highlight the variety of roles that adolescent behaviours and social environments may have in the developmental process of self-esteem from adolescence into mid-adulthood. The article discusses a study to evaluate the impact of socioeconomic status (SES) on psychological resources and their impact on distress symptoms in a 10-year follow-up of young adults. The study found that lower SES was associated with poorer psychological resources and changes in psychological resources moderated the effect of SES on distress symptoms. Slower resource development was observed among women only with lower SES at the age of 22.
