1. Gut Microbial Species and Endotypes Associate with Remission in Ulcerative Colitis Patients Treated with Anti-TNF or Anti-integrin Therapy.

Abstract: Background and Aims The gut microbiota contributes to aberrant inflammation in inflammatory bowel disease, but the bacterial factors causing or exacerbating inflammation are not fully understood. Further, the predictive or prognostic value of gut microbial biomarkers for remission in response to biologic therapy is unclear. Methods We perform whole metagenomic sequencing of 550 stool samples from 287 ulcerative colitis patients from a large, phase 3, head-to-head study of infliximab and etrolizumab. Results We identify several bacterial species in baseline and/or post-treatment samples that associate with clinical remission. These include previously described associations [ Faecalibacterium prausnitzii_F ] as well as new associations with remission to biologic therapy [ Flavonifractor plautii ]. We build multivariate models and find that gut microbial species are better predictors for remission than clinical variables alone. Finally, we describe patient groups that differ in microbiome composition and remission rate after induction therapy, suggesting the potential utility of microbiome-based endotyping. Conclusions In this large study of ulcerative colitis patients, we show that few individual species associate strongly with clinical remission, but multivariate models including microbiome can predict clinical remission and have better predictive power compared with clinical data alone. 3. Segmentation of Drone Collision Hazards in Airborne RADAR Point Clouds Using PointNet

Abstract: The integration of drones into shared airspace for beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) operations presents significant challenges but holds transformative potential for sectors like transportation, construction, energy and defence. A prerequisite for this integration is equipping drones with enhanced situational awareness to ensure collision avoidance and safe operations. Current approaches mainly target single object detection or classification, or simpler sensing outputs that offer limited perceptual understanding and lack the rapid end-to-end processing needed to convert sensor data into safety-critical insights. In contrast, our study leverages radar technology for novel end-to-end semantic segmentation of aerial point clouds to simultaneously identify multiple collision hazards. By adapting and optimizing the PointNet architecture and integrating aerial domain insights, our framework distinguishes five distinct classes: mobile targets like drones (DJI M300 and DJI Mini) and airplanes (Ikarus C42), and static returns (ground and infrastructure) which results in enhanced situational awareness for drones. To our knowledge, this is the first approach addressing simultaneous identification of multiple collision threats in an aerial setting, achieving a robust 94% accuracy. This work highlights the potential of radar technology to advance situational awareness in drones, facilitating safe and efficient BVLOS operations.

Abstract: Macrophages exhibit remarkable functional plasticity, a requirement for their central role in tissue homeostasis. During chronic inflammation, macrophages acquire sustained inflammatory ‘states’ that contribute to disease, but there is limited understanding of the regulatory mechanisms that drive their generation. Here we describe a systematic functional genomics approach that combines genome-wide phenotypic screening in primary murine macrophages with transcriptional and cytokine profiling of genetic perturbations in primary human macrophages to uncover regulatory circuits of inflammatory states. This process identifies regulators of five distinct states associated with key features of macrophage function. Among these regulators, loss of the N6-methyladenosine (m6A) writer components abolishes m6A modification of TNFtranscripts, thereby enhancing mRNA stability and TNF production associated with multiple inflammatory pathologies. Thus, phenotypic characterization of primary murine and human macrophages describes the regulatory circuits underlying distinct inflammatory states, revealing post-transcriptional control of TNFmRNA stability as an immunosuppressive mechanism in innate immunity.

7. Radiology advocacy: Promoting collaboration between trainees and professional societies.

Abstract: From mammographic screening guidelines to resident work hour regulations, public policy affects every aspect of the practice of radiology and ultimately determines how radiological care is delivered to patients. Shaping public policy through advocacy is therefore critical to ensure patient access to equitable, high-quality radiological care. In advocacy, individual practicing radiologists and radiology trainees can increase the scope of their influence by collaborating with professional radiology societies. When radiology trainees participate in organized radiology advocacy, they learn about regulatory and legislative issues that will affect their careers, and they learn how to effect policy change. Radiology societies in turn benefit from trainee involvement, as engaging trainees early in their careers leads to more robust future participation and leadership. To encourage trainee involvement, radiology societies can engage individual residency programs and medical student radiology interest groups, invest in trainee-focused events, and maximize the number of positions of responsibility open to trainees. To circumvent the barriers to participation that many trainees face, radiology societies can make meeting proceedings free and available through virtual mediums. 8. Optimization of Absolute Coronary Blood Flow Measurements to Assess Microvascular Function: In Vivo Validation of Hyperemia and Higher Infusion Speeds.

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Reliable assessment of coronary microvascular function is essential. Techniques to measure absolute coronary blood flow are promising but need validation. The objectives of this study were: first, to validate the potential of saline infusion to generate maximum hyperemia in vivo. Second, to validate absolute coronary blood flow measured with continuous coronary thermodilution at high (40-50 mL/min) infusion speeds and asses its safety. METHODS: Fourteen closed-chest sheep underwent absolute coronary blood flow measurements with increasing saline infusion speeds at different dosages under general anesthesia. An additional 7 open-chest sheep underwent these measurements with epicardial Doppler flow probes. Coronary flows were compared with reactive hyperemia after 45 s of coronary occlusion. RESULTS: Twenty milliliters per minute of saline infusion induced a significantly lower hyperemic coronary flow (140 versus 191 mL/min; P=0.0165), lower coronary flow reserve (1.82 versus 3.21; P≤0.0001), and higher coronary resistance (655 versus 422 woods units; P=0.0053) than coronary occlusion. On the other hand, 30 mL/min of saline infusion resulted in hyperemic coronary flow (196 versus 192 mL/min; P=0.8292), coronary flow reserve (2.77 versus 3.21; P=0.1107), and coronary resistance (415 versus 422 woods units; P=0.9181) that were not different from coronary occlusion. Hyperemic coronary flow was 40.7% with 5 mL/min, 40.8% with 10 mL/min, 73.1% with 20 mL/min, 102.3% with 30 mL/min, 99.0% with 40 mL/min, and 98.0% with 50 mL/min of saline infusion when compared with postocclusive hyperemic flow. There was a significant bias toward flow overestimation (Bland-Altman: bias±SD, -73.09±30.52; 95% limits of agreement, -132.9 to -13.27) with 40 to 50 mL/min of saline. Occasionally, ischemic changes resulted in ventricular fibrillation (9.5% with 50 mL/min) at higher infusion rates. CONCLUSIONS: Continuous saline infusion of 30 mL/min but not 20 mL/min induced maximal hyperemia. 9. Coevolution of craton margins and interiors during continental break-up

Abstract: Many cratonic continental fragments dispersed during the rifting and break-up of Gondwana are bound by steep topographic landforms known as ‘great escarpments’1–4, which rim elevated plateaus in the craton interior5,6. In terms of formation, escarpments and plateaus are traditionally considered distinct owing to their spatial separation, occasionally spanning more than a thousand kilometres. Here we integrate geological observations, statistical analysis, geodynamic simulations and landscape-evolution models to develop a physical model that mechanistically links both phenomena to continental rifting. Escarpments primarily initiate at rift-border faults and slowly retreat at about 1 km Myr−1through headward erosion. Simultaneously, rifting generates convective instabilities in the mantle7–10that migrate cratonward at a faster rate of about 15–20 km Myr−1along the lithospheric root, progressively removing cratonic keels11, driving isostatic uplift of craton interiors and forming a stable, elevated plateau. This process forces a synchronized wave of denudation, documented in thermochronology studies, which persists for tens of millions of years and migrates across the craton at a comparable or slower pace. We interpret the observed sequence of rifting, escarpment formation and exhumation of craton interiors as an evolving record of geodynamic mantle processes tied to continental break-up, upending the prevailing notion of cratons as geologically stable terrains.

10. Decolonisation beyond Independence: Reflections from the Papua New Guinea Experience — An Afterword

Abstract: Discussions of colonialism and decolonialism often take as a starting point an assumption that these processes can be defined in particular ways and consequently morally evaluated. Whilst defining terms can act as a theoretical or political simplification that is indispensable for certain kinds of discussion, it is important to remember that to evoke ‘colonialism’ is to make a claim about and on social relations and obligations. The papers in this collection draw our attention to the ways in which ‘colonialism’ was never a simply defined bilateral relationship between an easily defined coloniser and an equally easily defined colonised. The experience of PNG around the time of political independence instead draws our attention to the multiplicity of ways in which particular relations were described as or denied as being ‘colonial’. This historical re‐examination acts as a useful nuance to contemporary discussions of decolonisation that potentially paradoxically reinscribe old colonial binaries.

Abstract: ABSTRACTCARM1 (coactivator associated arginine methyltransferase 1) has recently emerged as a powerful regulator of skeletal muscle biology. However, the molecular mechanisms by which the methyltransferase remodels muscle remain to be fully understood. In this study, carm1skeletal muscle-specific knockout (mKO) mice exhibited lower muscle mass with dysregulated macroautophagic/autophagic and atrophic signaling, including depressed AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) site-specific phosphorylation of ULK1 (unc-51 like autophagy activating kinase 1; Ser555) and FOXO3 (forkhead box O3; Ser588), as well as MTOR (mechanistic target of rapamycin kinase)-induced inhibition of ULK1 (Ser757), along with AKT/protein kinase B site-specific suppression of FOXO1 (Ser256) and FOXO3 (Ser253). In addition to lower mitophagy and autophagy flux in skeletal muscle, carm1mKO led to increased mitochondrial PRKN/parkin accumulation, which suggests that CARM1 is required for basal mitochondrial turnover and autophagic clearance. carm1deletion also elicited PPARGC1A (PPARG coactivator 1 alpha) activity and a slower, more oxidative muscle phenotype. As such, these carm1mKO-evoked adaptations disrupted mitophagy and autophagy induction during food deprivation and collectively served to mitigate fasting-induced muscle atrophy. Furthermore, at the threshold of muscle atrophy during food deprivation experiments in humans, skeletal muscle CARM1 activity decreased similarly to our observations in mice, and was accompanied by site-specific activation of ULK1 (Ser757), highlighting the translational impact of the methyltransferase in human skeletal muscle. Taken together, our results indicate that CARM1 governs mitophagic, autophagic, and atrophic processes fundamental to the maintenance and remodeling of muscle mass. Abstract: Teachers and the would-be teachers are the facilitators of learning who are the first to implant to us knowledge as we aim to instill sustainable development in every facet of our daily operations. Moreover, to realize sustainable development, this research focuses on the extent of environmental awareness in the framework of waste management among preservice teachers in the College of Teacher Education. This study employed a descriptive-quantitative research design with a 30-item survey questionnaire consisting of five different categories to measure the level of awareness of the preservice teacher. It was administered to a total of 250 third year and fourth-year preservice teachers upon which 213 (85.2%) responded. The findings of this study revealed the multifaceted spectrum of attitudes of the preservice teachers that span from pessimism to optimism in relation to waste management practices and environmental concerns. The results suggest that stakeholders consider a diverse range of perspectives when formulating strategies to promote sustainable waste management practices and cultivate environmental awareness. 16. A Violinist's Viewpoint: Performing J. S. Bach's Chaconne in Bobbi Jene Smith's Broken Theater

Abstract: Abstract:This article brings together my personal reflections on performing J. S. Bach's Chaconne from the Violin Partita No. 2 in D Minor BWV 1004 in the work of choreographer Bobbi Jene Smith, with critical discussions of the Chaconne's nineteenth- and twentieth-century pedagogical and reception history. While my performance of Bach's movement has over the last decade favored a modern, historically informed style, witnessing the emotional and narrative potentials of this choreographed Chaconne prompted me to revisit nineteenth- and twentieth-century editions, recordings, and commentary on the work. I make connections between the physicality of the dancers (Or Schraiber, Yaya Logothetis, and Mouna Soualem), Smith's choreographic establishment of personal psychology and interpersonal relationships, and Romantic-violinistic ideals of tone as a marker of subjective interiority. In contexts of both dance and violin practice, I point to the ways in which the idealistic potentials of Bach's music—so lauded in nineteenth- and twentieth-century accounts—are in fact carefully cultivated effects generated by corporeal means. By connecting these pedagogical ideals to my own experiences as a violin student and professional performer, I draw attention to the enduring relevance of these material and pedagogical histories. And, in drawing together Smith's choreography with contexts of the Chaconne's generic prehistory, composition, and performances, I advocate for imaginative and interdisciplinary interpretations of Bach's Chaconne, which nonetheless maintain critical perspectives on the work's spiritualization and canonization.

J Strength Cond Res38(3): 540–548, 2024—The purpose of this study was to determine whether laboratory-derived exercise intensity and performance demarcations are altered after prolonged outdoor cycling. Male recreational cyclists (n= 10; RIDE) performed an exhaustive ramp-incremental test (RAMP) and a 3-minute all-out test (3MT) on a cycle ergometer before and after a 90-km cycling ride. RAMP-derived maximal oxygen uptake (V̇O2max), gas exchange threshold (GET), respiratory compensation point (RCP), and associated power output (PO), as well as 3MT-derived critical power (CP) and work performed above CP, were compared before and after ∼3 hours of outdoor cycling. Six active men served as “no-exercise” healthy controls (CON), who, instead, rested for 3 hours between repeated RAMP and 3MT tests. During the 90-km ride, the duration within the moderate-intensity, heavy-intensity, and severe-intensity domains was 59 ± 24%, 40 ± 24%, and 1 ± 1%, respectively. Compared with pre-90 km, post-RAMP exhibited reductions in (a) V̇O2max(4.04 ± 0.48 vs. 3.80 ± 0.38 L·min−1; p= 0.026) and associated PO (392 ± 30 W vs. 357 ± 26 W; p= 0.002); (b) the V̇O2and PO at RCP (3.49 ± 0.46 vs. 3.34 ± 0.43 L·min−1; p= 0.040 and 312 ± 40 W vs. 292 ± 24 W; p= 0.023); and (c) the PO (214 ± 32 W vs. 198 ± 25 W; p= 0.027), but not the V̇O2at GET (2.52 ± 0.44 vs. 2.44 ± 0.38 L·min−1; p= 0.388). Pre-90 km vs. post-90 km 3MT variables showed reduced W′ (9.8 ± 3.4 vs. 6.8 ± 2.6 kJ; p= 0.002) and unchanged CP (304 ± 26 W and 297 ± 34 W; p= 0.275). In the CON group, there were no differences in V̇O2max, GET, RCP, W′, CP, or associated power outputs (p> 0.05) pre-to-post 3 hours of rest. The preservation of critical power demonstrates that longer-duration maximal efforts may be sustained after long-duration cycle. However, shorter sprints and higher-intensity efforts eliciting V̇O2maxwill exhibit decreased PO after 3 hours of a predominantly moderate-intensity cycle.

19. A needs assessment for simulation in African surgical education

Abstract: Introduction: There is a critical need for comprehensive surgical training in African countries given the unmet surgical burden of disease in this region. Collaborative and progressive initiatives in global surgical education will have the greatest impact on trainees. Little is known about surgical education needs from the perspective of practicing surgeons and trainees in low-middle-income countries (LMICs). Even less is known about the potential role for simulation to augment training. Methods: A modified Delphi methodology with 2 rounds of responses was employed to survey program directors (PD) and associate program directors (APD) of Pan-African Association of Christian Surgeons (PAACS) general surgery residency programs across eight low-middle-income countries in Africa. 3 PD/APDs and 2 surgical residents participated in semi-structured interviews centered around the role of simulation in training. Descriptive analysis was performed to elicit key themes and illustrative examples. Results: The survey of program directors revealed that teaching residents the psychomotor skills need to perform intracorporeal suturing was both high priority and desired in multiple training sites. Other high priority skills were laparoscopic camera driving and medial visceral rotation. The interviews revealed a specific desire to perform laparoscopic surgery and a need for a simulation curriculum to familiarize staff and trainees with laparoscopic techniques. Several barriers to laparoscopic surgery exist, such as lack of staff familiarity with the equipment, lack of public buy in, and lack of generalizable and adaptable educational modules. Trainees saw utility in the use of simulation to optimize time in the operating room and sought opportunities to improve their laparoscopic skills. Conclusion: Faculty and surgical trainees in LMICs have interest in learning advanced surgical techniques, such as laparoscopy. Developing a simulation curriculum tailored to the trainees’ local context has the potential to fill this need. Graphical abstract:

Abstract: INTRODUCTION: Here we set out to create a symptom‐led staging system for the canonical semantic and non‐fluent/agrammatic variants of primary progressive aphasia (PPA), which present unique diagnostic and management challenges not well captured by functional scales developed for Alzheimer's disease and other dementias. METHODS: An international PPA caregiver cohort was surveyed on symptom development under six provisional clinical stages and feedback was analyzed using a mixed‐methods sequential explanatory design. RESULTS: Both PPA syndromes were characterized by initial communication dysfunction and non‐verbal behavioral changes, with increasing syndromic convergence and functional dependency at later stages. Milestone symptoms were distilled to create a prototypical progression and severity scale of functional impairment: the PPA Progression Planning Aid ("PPA‐Squared"). DISCUSSION: This work introduces a symptom‐led staging scheme and functional scale for semantic and non‐fluent/agrammatic variants of PPA. Our findings have implications for diagnostic and care pathway guidelines, trial design, and personalized prognosis and treatment for PPA. 24. Play It Again: Differential pupillometry responses to familiar and unfamiliar music: Findings from typical and atypical Alzheimer's disease.

Abstract: Background: Music has gained more attention than other art forms as a potent tool in supporting cognitive, emotional and social functioning in dementia populations. Methods for measuring moment‐to‐moment responses ‐ rather than comparing pre‐ and post‐stimulus effects ‐ may enable tailoring of musical experiences for the individual. The current study investigated whether differential pupillometry responses could be established for familiar/unfamiliar music in people living with early‐mid stages of typical, memory‐led Alzheimer's disease (tAD), atypical 'visual variant' of Alzheimer's disease (posterior cortical atrophy; PCA), and healthy age‐matched controls. Method: Patient groups [tAD = 18; PCA = 21] were recruited via the Specialist Cognitive Disorders clinic at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, London, UK. Healthy older adults [N = 90] were recruited opportunistically via departmental research databases/Join Dementia Research. Pupillometry responses were recorded while participants listened to 30 musical excerpts [classical (N = 5); 1960s (N = 10), 1970s (N = 10), reversed 'de novo' tracks (N = 5)], each rated for familiarity: (a) a priori (known/unknown); (b) self‐rated by participants (not familiar‐extremely familiar); and (c) whether the excerpt evoked a memory (yes/no). Background, basic clinical and music experience information was collected, alongside additional neuropsychological assessment in the patient groups. Separate linear regression models obtaining cluster robust standard errors were run to predict pupil response from a priori predicted‐ and subjective‐ratings of music familiarity in each participant group, controlling for demographic factors including disease severity. Result: Results indicate significant within‐group effects of familiarity on pupil response in controls and the tAD group. No effects were observed within the PCA group. Preliminary between‐group analyses including diagnosis as a predictor revealed that, for each music‐pupillometry model, tAD overall pupil dilation responses did not differ significantly compared to controls, however a significant difference was observed between PCA and control pupil dilation responses. Conclusion: The results are discussed in relation to the preliminary finding of preserved differential pupillometry responses to familiar/unfamiliar music in the tAD group. Although the PCA results question the utility of pupillometry in individuals with significant oculomotor dysfunction, pupillometry may serve as a useful non‐invasive 'biosignal' for establishing in‐the‐moment response to music, including in post‐verbal individuals in the later stages of dementia. 25. Characterization of pincer-type Hip impingement in professional women's ice hockey players.

Abstract: Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) appears common in ice hockey, but there is a lack of data examining pincer-type impingement in women's ice hockey athletes. The objective of this study was to assess the prevalence of pincer-type impingement in National Women's Hockey League (NWHL) athletes. Our hypothesis was that there would be an increased prevalence of pincer impingement in these athletes. Data were gathered for a team of NWHL players, and age, gender, and body mass index (BMI) matched controls were also retrospectively collected. All subjects were above 18 years of age. Control patients were excluded if they had undergone prior hip surgery, were greater than age 30, or had BMI greater than 35. Radiographs of both groups were assessed for lateral center edge angle (LCEA), Tönnis angle, and crossover sign. Tönnis angle <0 or LCEA >40 degrees was considered pincer morphology. An alpha angle >55 degrees was considered cam morphology. Thirty-seven NWHL players and 37 female controls were included. Overall 32% of the players had a pincer lesion in either hip based on LCEA, 8% had a Tönnis angle <0, and 22% had a crossover sign in either hip compared to 9%, 19%, and 13% for the controls, respectively. None of these findings were significantly different between the groups (p > 0.05). An alpha angle ≥55 degrees in either hip was found in 84% of players, but lateral Dunn images for alpha angle measurements were not available for the control group. Pincer-type morphology and crossover signs were present in a larger portion of NWHL players than has been reported in the general population, but these findings were not statistically different than in the control group. Cam-type morphology was even more prevalent in these athletes and may be related to age at menarche due impingement at the physis prior to closure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

26. Spindle cell and fibrohistiocytic soft tissue tumours of infancy and childhood.

Abstract: Spindle cell and fibrohistiocytic soft tissue tumours are a diverse group of neoplasms that are commonly seen in childhood. This paper provides an overview of the histopathological features of the more common entities that are likely to be encountered by general pathologists and paediatric pathologists in children and young adults. Fibroblastic and myofibroblastic tumours are characterized by the proliferation of fibroblasts or myofibroblasts, and they exhibit a wide range of histological appearances, from benign to malignant, and can occur in various anatomical locations. Nerve sheath tumours are derived from the Schwann cells of the peripheral nerves and are often associated with neurofibromatosis. Synovial sarcoma, a high-grade malignant tumour, is characterized by specific chromosomal translocations resulting in the SS18-SSX fusion gene. NTRK-rearranged tumours, a recently recognized entity, are characterized by gene fusions involving the neurotrophic tyrosine receptor kinase (NTRK) genes, leading to overexpression of the TRK protein. Fibrohistiocytic tumours of childhood, including fibrous histiocytoma and plexiform fibrohistiocytic tumour, show varying degrees of fibroblastic and histiocytic differentiation. They exhibit a wide range of clinical behaviour, from benign to locally aggressive. Understanding the histopathological features of these tumours is important to guide appropriate management. Abstract: Soft tissue sarcomas are a rare group of heterogenous entities which affect the tissues supporting, connecting and/or surrounding body structures and organs. Factors such as patient age and tumour location can influence how soft tissue sarcomas manifest with biological and clinical behaviour ranging from less aggressive to highly malignant. Recent advances in both diagnosis and treatment have led to new insights into the pathologic, histologic and genomic characterisation of sarcomas and these insights have diversified subtyping. One subtype, small round (blue) cell tumours (SRBCT), constitutes a divergent group of tumours which occur most commonly in the paediatric and young adult population. The clinical characteristics, prognostics and therapeutic approaches regarding these tumours differ greatly. Despite this variation the relative histomorphological uniformity of SRBCTs poses the histopathologist a diagnostic challenge. This challenge is being ameliorated by advances in molecular genetic profiling which is revolutionising diagnosis and providing insight into both biomarkers and therapeutic targets. The following review aims to address the pertinent morphological, immunohistochemical and molecular features of some of the more common SRBCTs, including variants, and hopes to provide the histopathologist with a diagnostic approach focussed upon the key diagnostic features. Abstract: BackgroundLung function testing remains a cornerstone in the assessment and management of interstitial lung disease (ILD) patients. The clinical implications of the Global Lung function Initiative (GLI) reference equations and the updated interpretation strategies remain uncertain.MethodsAdult patients with ILD with baseline forced vital capacity (FVC) were included from the Australasian ILD registry and the National Healthcare Group ILD registry, Singapore.The European Coal and Steel Community and Miller reference equations were compared with the GLI reference equations to assess (a) differences in lung function percent predicted values; (b) ILD risk prediction models and (c) eligibility for ILD clinical trial enrolment.ResultsAmong 2219 patients with ILD, 1712 (77.2%) were white individuals. Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), connective tissue disease-associated ILD and unclassifiable ILD predominated.Median FVC was 2.60 (2.01–3.36) L, forced expiratory volume in 1 s was 2.09 (1.67–2.66) L and diffusing capacity of the lungs for carbon monoxide (DLCO) was 13.60 (10.16–17.60) mL/min/mm Hg. When applying the GLI reference equations, the mean FVC percentage predicted was 8.8% lower (87.7% vs 78.9%, p<0.01) while the mean DLCO percentage predicted was 4.9% higher (58.5% vs 63.4%, p<0.01). There was a decrease in 19 IPF and 119 non-IPF patients who qualified for the nintedanib clinical trials when the GLI reference equations were applied. Risk prediction models performed similarly in predicting mortality using both reference equations.ConclusionApplying the GLI reference equations in patients with ILD leads to higher DLCO percentage predicted values and smaller lung volume percentage predicted values. While applying the GLI reference equations did not impact on prognostication, fewer patients met the clinical trial criteria for antifibrotic agents.

29. Immediate smoking cessation support during lung cancer screening: long-term outcomes from two randomised controlled trials

Abstract: BackgroundImmediate smoking cessation interventions delivered alongside targeted lung health checks (TLHCs) to screen for lung cancer increase self-reported abstinence at 3 months. The impact on longer term, objectively confirmed quit rates remains to be established.MethodsWe followed up participants from two clinical trials in people aged 55–75 years who smoked and took part in a TLHC. These randomised participants in the TLHC by day of attendance to either usual care (UC) (signposting to smoking cessation services) or an offer of immediate smoking cessation support including pharmacotherapy. In the QuLIT1 trial, this was delivered face to face and in QuLIT2, it was delivered remotely. Follow-up was conducted 12 months after the TLHC by telephone interview with subsequent biochemical verification of smoking cessation using exhaled CO.Results430 people were enrolled initially (115 in QuLIT1 and 315 in QuLIT2), with 4 deaths before 12 months leaving 426 (62.1±5.27 years old and 48% women) participants for analysis. At 12 months, those randomised to attend on smoking cessation support intervention days had higher quit rates compared with UC adjusted for age, gender, deprivation, and which trial they had been in; self-reported 7-day point prevalence (20.0% vs 12.8%; adjusted OR (AOR)=1.78; 95% CI 1.04 to 2.89) and CO-verified quits (12.1% vs 4.7%; AOR=2.97; 95% CI 1.38 to 6.90). Those in the intervention arm were also more likely to report having made a quit attempt (30.2% vs UC 18.5%; AOR 1.90; 95% CI 1.15 to 3.15).ConclusionProviding immediate smoking cessation support alongside TLHC increases long term, biochemically confirmed smoking abstinence.Trial registration numberISRCTN12455871.

Abstract: Patient blood management (PBM) is an evidence-based care package to improve patient outcomes by optimizing a patient’s blood, minimizing blood loss, and the effective management and, when appropriate, the tolerance of anemia. It is relatively well-developed in adult medicine and remains in its infancy in neonatology. This review explores why evidence-based guidelines are insufficient, discusses the variations in neonatal transfusion practice and why this matters, and provides the key updates in neonatal transfusion practice. The authors give examples of a successful neonatal PBM program and single-center projects.

35. 'Translating' Valperga: A Journey Through Mary Shelley's Italy.

Abstract: This essay addresses how the manifold Italianness of Mary Shelley's Valperga informs our translation of the novel into Italian. Valperga narrates – and in part fictionalizes, especially through its female figures – Italian Medieval history, based on the author's wide-ranging and scrupulous research into multiple historiographical sources from Machiavelli to Muratori to Villani. It also engages with the Italian cultural and political scene of Shelley's own time. The novel was composed between the revolutionary moti of 1820–21 and the later Risorgimento, and powerfully reflects the troubled political climate of the age. Valperga draws on Shelley's experience of living in early nineteenth-century Italy, as well as on her reading knowledge of Italian, a language that she was successfully endeavouring to learn to speak at the time. There is therefore a special appropriateness, and also a special responsibility, in translating the novel into the language and culture that played such an important role in its formation. Abstract: Background: Posterior cortical atrophy (PCA) is a neurodegenerative syndrome most commonly caused by Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology. PCA is often considered the canonical 'visual dementia', characterised by the progressive loss of visual and posterior cortical functions corresponding to parieto‐occipital and occipito‐temporal atrophy. However, patient reports of difficulties finding sleeves of clothes, transferring between postures and determining heading direction imply non‐visual disturbances, consistent with the multisensory role of the posterior parietal cortex. Such reports raise questions regarding AD clinical heterogeneity, representing a substantial challenge to patients' independence and management of PCA and typical AD (tAD). Method: Patient (total n = 39; PCA n = 23; tAD n = 16) and control (n = 19) participants repeatedly reached to a proprioceptive target (their non‐dominant thumb) (Fig.A) with and without vision and tactile feedback (n = 40 trials per participant). The target was positioned passively behind a screen apparatus at five positions using an adjustable foam handrest. The primary outcome measure was absolute (medio‐lateral) error determined using whole‐body motion capture data (Fig.B). Result: Absolute error was greater without than with vision across groups. However, the effect of removing vision on absolute error was smallest in the control group (estimated mean error with vision [95%CI]: 15mm [6,25]; without vision: 23mm [14,32]), greatest in PCA (with vision: 39mm [30,49]; without vision: 76mm [67,86]) and intermediate in the tAD group (with vision: 26mm [16,37]; without vision: 49mm [39,60]) (vision‐by‐group interaction: p<.001; Fig.C). For ∼5% of trials, absolute error exceeded 200mm in PCA and 120mm in tAD participants (Fig.B; control range: 0.01‐80mm). There was no evidence of an effect of tactile feedback in any group. The effect of target location differed between groups (location‐by‐group interaction: p<.001). Patient reaching errors were particularly apparent under postures where the target arm crossed the body midline (e.g. left arm in right hemispace); this effect was notably evident in the PCA group even with available vision (Fig.C). Conclusion: Findings emphasise disturbed spatial awareness in PCA and tAD in the absence of vision, consistent with diminished body position sense‐ proprioception ‐ which may be mediated centrally through posterior parietal vulnerability. Abstract: Rib fractures commonly result from blunt chest wall trauma and are often associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Patients often develop a vicious cycle of pain, requirement for opioid analgesia, respiratory dysfunction, hypostatic pneumonia and ultimately respiratory failure. This is more common in those with high-risk features such as increasing age, respiratory comorbidities and significant burden of injury. Poorly managed chest wall pain can lead to prolonged hospital stay, including critical care admission, invasive ventilation and increased likelihood of morbidity and death. Protocolized assessment and management is recommended to ensure high-risk patients are identified early and ensure that a holistic package of care including physiotherapy, incentive spirometry, multi-modal stepwise analgesia and laxatives are provided for all patients. Regional anaesthesia and surgical fixation should also be considered early for high-risk patients. A multidisciplinary approach is essential to maximize patient experience and outcome. 41. Characterizing femoroacetabular impingement in professional Nordic Skiers.

Abstract: Studies have shown a high prevalence of femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) among elite athletes yet there is a paucity of data on FAI in Nordic skiers. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of radiographic FAI in professional Nordic Combined Skiers and Ski jumpers compared to controls and assess functional outcomes including hip range of motion (ROM) and pain in patients with radiographic evidence of FAI compared to those without it. A cohort of elite Nordic Skiers underwent medical history, physical examination, and pelvic radiographs at their visit with a fellowship-trained sports medicine physician. On pelvis radiographs, Alpha angle>55 degrees was deemed cam-positive, and positive crossover signs, Tönnis<0, or LCEA>40 were deemed pincer positive. Further stratification was performed by sex, ski event type, hip pain, presence of cam lesions, and presence of pincer lesions. Spearman correlation matrix was performed to measure the association between radiographic measurements and ROM. Nineteen Nordic skiers and nineteen age, sex, and BMI matched controls were included in the study. There were no significant differences in age, sex, BMI, and hip pain between groups. While Nordic skiers demonstrated decreased ROM bilaterally on external rotation compared to controls, skiers had larger ROM bilaterally on extension, abduction, adduction compared to controls. Skiers were significantly more likely to have bilateral crossover sign and alpha angles>55 compared to controls. Subgroup analysis showed that Cam positive patients had higher flexion and adduction ROM and pincer positive patients had significantly higher flexion and abduction ROM compared to patients without cam and pincer lesions respectively. Patients with hip pain had significantly lower right hip abduction ROM compared to patients without hip pain. No significant correlations were seen between radiographic measurements and ROM. Similar to other elite 'hip heavy' sport athletes, Nordic skiers gave a notably higher prevalence of radiographic cam and pincer type morphology and significantly higher ROM compared to nonathletic controls. Clinicians evaluating Nordic skiers should be aware of these baseline findings with respect to a possible elevated long-term risk of symptomatic FAI in these athletes as well as other conditions related to radiographic FAI. Abstract: AbstractGlobal research programs seeking to achieve a commercially viable model of a fusion power plant are being accelerated at an unprecedented rate. One critical element to the design and licensing is an accurate understanding of the radiation environment throughout the plant lifetime and subsequent decommissioning phase. The radiation field, which results from the nuclear fusion reaction, gives rise to highly complex phenomena such as flux leakage, materials activation, and decay gamma fields. Demonstration of compliance with limits, the integrity of components, and the permissibility of operations are all fundamental to regulatory approval and the overall safety of a nuclear device. As such, neutronics, which is used in the general sense to refer to the mapping of radiation fields in nuclear devices, is a critical design driver. The Applied Radiation Technology group at the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority is a world leader in this field, developing new methods and deploying state-of-the-art codes to conduct nuclear analysis. As well as applied neutronics in areas spanning fusion reactors, medical applications, spallation neutron sources, and nuclear fission, there is an extensive parallel experimental program undertaking critical radiation field characterization and conducting measurements using an array of bespoke particle detection systems. This paper highlights recent technical developments made by this group in the context of outstanding challenges in this field, as well as providing an overview of current methods and capabilities for the broader interest of the community.

Abstract: Diverse strategies have been developed to visualize latent fingerprints (LFPs) that are undetectable by the naked eye. Among them, fluorescence-based approaches have emerged as an attractive method for enabling high-resolution LFP imaging. However, the use of fluorescent probes for LFP detection remains challenging due to cumbersome processing, low selectivity, and high background interference. Here, we demonstrate highly efficient, sensitive, and background-free LFP detection with dual-color emission arising from manganese (Mn)-doped lead halide perovskite (CsPb(Cl1–yBry)3) nanocrystals (NCs). The resulting bright, fluorescent, solid-state nanopowder (NP) permits the visualization of LFP ridge structures and the resolution of level 1–3 LFP features. The dual-color emission of the Mn-doped perovskite NP provides a simple, robust, and effective route to overcome background interference, thereby increasing the resolution and sensitivity of the LFP detection. The combination of the high quantum efficiency and dual emission of Mn-doped perovskite NP offers great potential for forensic science.

44. Characterization of pincer-type Hip impingement in professional women’s ice hockey players

Abstract: ABSTRACTObjectiveFemoroacetabular impingement (FAI) appears common in ice hockey, but there is a lack of data examining pincer-type impingement in women’s ice hockey athletes. The objective of this study was to assess the prevalence of pincer-type impingement in National Women’s Hockey League (NWHL) athletes. Our hypothesis was that there would be an increased prevalence of pincer impingement in these athletes.MethodsData were gathered for a team of NWHL players, and age, gender, and body mass index (BMI) matched controls were also retrospectively collected. All subjects were above 18 years of age. Control patients were excluded if they had undergone prior hip surgery, were greater than age 30, or had BMI greater than 35. Radiographs of both groups were assessed for lateral center edge angle (LCEA), Tönnis angle, and crossover sign. Tönnis angle <0 or LCEA >40 degrees was considered pincer morphology. An alpha angle >55 degrees was considered cam morphology.ResultsThirty-seven NWHL players and 37 female controls were included. Overall 32% of the players had a pincer lesion in either hip based on LCEA, 8% had a Tönnis angle <0, and 22% had a crossover sign in either hip compared to 9%, 19%, and 13% for the controls, respectively. None of these findings were significantly different between the groups (p > 0.05). An alpha angle ≥55 degrees in either hip was found in 84% of players, but lateral Dunn images for alpha angle measurements were not available for the control group.ConclusionsPincer-type morphology and crossover signs were present in a larger portion of NWHL players than has been reported in the general population, but these findings were not statistically different than in the control group. Cam-type morphology was even more prevalent in these athletes and may be related to age at menarche due impingement at the physis prior to closure.

Abstract: Disease of the aortic arch, descending thoracic, or thoracoabdominal aorta necessitates dedicated expertise across medical, endovascular, and surgical specialties. Cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, vascular surgeons, interventional radiologists, and others have expertise and skills that aid in the management of patients with complex aortic disease. No specialty is uniformly expert in all aspects of required care. Because of this dispersion of expertise across specialties, an aortic team model approach to decision-making and treatment is advocated. A nonhierarchical partnership across specialties within an interdisciplinary aortic clinic ensures that all treatment options are considered and promotes shared decision-making between the patient and all aortic experts. Furthermore, regionalization of care for aortic disease of increased complexity assures that the breadth of treatment options is available and that favourable volume-outcome ratios for high-risk procedures are maintained. An awareness of best practice care pathways for patient referrals for preventative management, acute care scenarios, chronic care scenarios, and pregnancy might facilitate a more organized management schema for aortic disease across Canada and improve lifelong surveillance initiatives.

47. Shakespeare's Italian place-myths: The Padua–Verona–Mantua nexus

Abstract: This article aims to explore Shakespeare's poetics of Italian places and place names, with particular regard to the nexus between Padua, Verona, and Mantua. The primary text of reference is The Taming of the Shrew, especially in relation to John Florio's bilingual conversation manual, Second frutes(1590). While Padua, in this and other plays, is represented as a cultural hub, Mantua, by contrast, is often figured as a spatial elsewhere, a heterotopia or ‘badlands’ associated with transgression and violent death. At the same time, Mantua is at the centre of Renaissance culture, thereby constituting a paradoxical space.

48. Radiation induces long‐term muscle fibrosis and promotes a fibrotic phenotype in fibro‐adipogenic progenitors

Abstract: Radiation‐induced muscle pathology, characterized by muscle atrophy and fibrotic tissue accumulation, is the most common debilitating late effect of therapeutic radiation exposure particularly in juvenile cancer survivors. In healthy muscle, fibro/adipogenic progenitors (FAPs) are required for muscle maintenance and regeneration, while in muscle pathology FAPs are precursors for exacerbated extracellular matrix deposition. However, the role of FAPs in radiation‐induced muscle pathology has not previously been explored. Four‐week‐old Male CBA or C57Bl/6J mice received a single dose (16 Gy) of irradiation (IR) to a single hindlimb with the shielded contralateral limb (CLTR) serving as a non‐IR control. Mice were sacrificed 3, 7, 14 (acute IR response), and 56 days post‐IR (long‐term IR response). Changes in skeletal muscle morphology, myofibre composition, muscle niche cellular dynamics, DNA damage, proliferation, mitochondrial respiration, and metabolism and changes in progenitor cell fate where assessed. Juvenile radiation exposure resulted in smaller myofibre cross‐sectional area, particularly in type I and IIA myofibres (P< 0.05) and reduced the proportion of type I myofibres (P< 0.05). Skeletal muscle fibrosis (P< 0.05) was evident at 56 days post‐IR. The IR‐limb had fewer endothelial cells (P< 0.05) and fibro‐adipogenic progenitors (FAPs) (P< 0.05) at 56 days post‐IR. Fewer muscle satellite (stem) cells were detected at 3 and 56 days in the IR‐limb (P< 0.05). IR induced FAP senescence (P< 0.05), increased their fibrogenic differentiation (P< 0.01), and promoted their glycolytic metabolism. Further, IR altered the FAP secretome in a manner that impaired muscle satellite (stem) cell differentiation (P< 0.05) and fusion (P< 0.05). Our study suggests that following juvenile radiation exposure, FAPs contribute to long‐term skeletal muscle atrophy and fibrosis. These findings provide rationale for investigating FAP‐targeted therapies to ameliorate the negative late effects of radiation exposure in skeletal muscle.

49. Together or Separate: What is best practice when imaging bilateral hands for rheumatoid arthritis examinations?

Abstract: A current gap identified in medical imaging (MI) literature is a standardised approach to bilateral hand examinations. This examination performed concurrently or unilaterally results in different effects on radiation dose and image quality, both of which are important to the diagnostic and follow‐up imaging of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients. An experimental study was undertaken using anthropomorphic hand phantoms at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) MI Simulation laboratory. Images of the hand were acquired individually and then concurrently with both hands together. Radiation dose was calculated by observing dose area product (DAP) reading on a digital radiography system, with the additional use of an exposure metre as a secondary data collection method. Image quality was quantified through measuring distortion caused by beam divergence, by exploring the separation of two metal rings fixed to the hand phantom. The overall radiation dose was higher for the unilateral technique by 10.15% at the digital radiography system console and 11.96% recorded by the exposure metre. In the second part of the experiment, the unilateral technique produced 0 mm of distortion when the phantom was positioned in the central part of the beam. The concurrent technique demonstrated an average of 3.65 mm of distortion, when both hands were positioned with the central part of the beam between them. The unilateral technique should be performed for bilateral hand examinations. The increase in distortion from the concurrent technique is clinically significant, as the diagnostic grading of RA is measured in millimetre increments. The additional overall examination dose is minimal when compared to the improvement in image quality. A current gap identified in medical imaging literature is a standardised approach to bilateral hand examinations. The unilateral technique has an approximate 11% increase in radiation dose; however, the concurrent technique produces an average of 3.65 mm of distortion across the radiograph. This result is clinically significant for rheumatoid arthritis referrals, as the diagnostic grading of RA is in millimetre increments.

50. Observation of Spurious Spectral Features in Mixed-Powder Compressed Pellets Measured by Terahertz Time-Domain Spectroscopy

Abstract: Spurious loss features were observed in mixed-powder compressed pellets measured in transmission using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy. Loss features were identified in two types of pellets: polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)-glass microspheres and PTFE-lactose. The features were found to be dependent on grain size and concentration. An explanation is proposed, based on varying optical thickness of the sample material.
