The article focuses on a study which documented the habitat and distribution of Vembur sheep in Tuticorin and Virudhunagar districts of Tamil Nadu, India. The study also characterized the morphology, physical and functional characteristics of the Vembur sheep breed. It found that there is no authentic information on the origin of the Vembur sheep, but the breed is speculated to have originated from Ramnad White sheep. As of 1998, the population of the Vembur sheep in the district is estimated at 31, 000, with an average flock size of 38.6.

The research concludes that Kanni Adu can be characterized by the predominance of TFB variant and the presence of TFC variant which has been reported in very few breeds of Indian goats.
