Macronyssid mites (Radfordiella) have been found in the oral mucosa of the long-nosed bat (Leptonycteris nivalis), which occurs from Texas southward throughout much of Mexico. This is the first report of mites of the suborder Mesostigmata attached in the oral cavity of a mammal. Osteolysis of hard palate and odontolysis of teeth result from infestations of mites adjacent to the upper premolars and molars; destruction of bone, teeth, and Connective tissue often leads to exfoliation of teeth in life. Oral mites have not been found in Leptonycteris sanborni, a species in part sympatric with Leptonycteris nivalis.

A population of hybrid pocket gophers of the Geomys bursarius group from central Texas is described in some detail using primarily molecular techniques. The relationship of natural hybrids to provisions of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature and the Endangered Species Act of 1973 is discussed, and questions are raised as to how such hybrid populations should be treated under these and related regulations. There is a reasonable probability that the resolution offered by molecular data will document that hybridization such as that observed in this population will become a commonly observed phenomenon. Therefore, in these and other legal documents, there is a need to have the meaning of “hybrid” clearly defined.

Eleven species of bats representing 6 families (Molossidae, Mormoopidae, Natalidae, Noctilionidae, Phyllostomidae, and Vespertilionidae) from the Antillean island of Dominica were examined for Acari. Eight species of mites and 2 of ticks were recovered. Five new host and 8 new locality records are established. The distribution, host-parasite relationships, and zoogeography of these acarine species are discussed.

A new subspecies of the previously monotypic Hylonycteris underwoodi is described from México. As currently understood, the new race is distributed from Jalisco to southern Oaxaca, whereas the nominate subspecies occurs from Veracruz and northern Oaxaca southeastward to western Panamá.

A new subspecies of Myotis thysanodes, possibly representing a disjunct population, is described from the Black Hills of South Dakota and Wyoming. The new race is compared with M. t. thysanodes and also with Myotis evotis evotis, which it superficially resembles.
