11. High-power passively mode-locked dissipative soliton fiber laser featuring cladding-pumped non-CVD thulium-doped fiber

Abstract

We are reporting on the characterization of a thulium-doped fiber laser applying new powder technology in the mode-locking regime. A high average output power of 185 mW at a repetition rate of 9 MHz was achieved directly from the oscillator, which resulted in 21 nJ of pulse energy. The single-pulse operation regime was confirmed by careful numerical modeling of the laser cavity.

14. Evaporation of volatile compounds in suspended-core fibers

Abstract

A sensing configuration for fluid evaporation monitoring using a suspended-core fiber tip is proposed. Strong differences between the evaporation processes of acetone and isopropyl alcohol were observed, both in terms of the signal’s intensity fluctuations and total duration. In each fluid, the main signal variations were due to changes in reflectivity inside a collapsed region of the suspended-core fiber near the spliced interface with a standard single-mode fiber. After further analysis with a wider array of substances, this configuration could, in the future, be used to detect and study the evaporation of different volatile organic compounds.

17. Highly birefringent photonic bandgap Bragg fiber loop mirror for sensing applications

Abstract

A highly-birefringent photonic bandgap Bragg fiber loop mirror sensor is proposed. Thanks to the Bragg fiber geometry, one can observe the group birefringence and the bandgap fiber in the transfer function. The sensing head presented different sensitivities for strain and temperature measurements. Using the matrix method, both the physical parameters can be discriminated. It is important to highlight that this Bragg fiber presents sensitivity to temperature of ~5.75 nm/ºC, for the group birefringence measurand.

Abstract

A highly birefringent photonic bandgap Bragg fiber loop mirror configuration for simultaneous measurement of strain and temperature is proposed. The group birefringence and the sharp loss peaks are observable in the spectral response. Because the sensing head presents different sensitivities for strain and temperature measurands, these physical parameters can be discriminated by using the matrix method. It should be noted that this Bragg fiber presents high sensitivity to temperature, of ∼5.75?nm/°C, due to the group birefringence variation. The rms deviations obtained are ±19.32?με and ±0.5?°C, for strain and temperature measurements, respectively.

Abstract

It is found that the reflection of leaky radiation from the interface between the outer silica cladding and the coating polymer greatly modifies the loss spectrum of Bragg fibers. A simple model that describes this effect is proposed and confirmed by measurement and computation.
