1. An analog-AI chip for energy-efficient speech recognition and transcription

Abstract

Models of artificial intelligence (AI) that have billions of parameters can achieve high accuracy across a range of tasks1,2, but they exacerbate the poor energy efficiency of conventional general-purpose processors, such as graphics processing units or central processing units. Analog in-memory computing (analog-AI)3–7can provide better energy efficiency by performing matrix–vector multiplications in parallel on ‘memory tiles’. However, analog-AI has yet to demonstrate software-equivalent (SWeq) accuracy on models that require many such tiles and efficient communication of neural-network activations between the tiles. Here we present an analog-AI chip that combines 35 million phase-change memory devices across 34 tiles, massively parallel inter-tile communication and analog, low-power peripheral circuitry that can achieve up to 12.4 tera-operations per second per watt (TOPS/W) chip-sustained performance. We demonstrate fully end-to-end SWeqaccuracy for a small keyword-spotting network and near-SWeqaccuracy on the much larger MLPerf8recurrent neural-network transducer (RNNT), with more than 45 million weights mapped onto more than 140 million phase-change memory devices across five chips.

6. Statistical Analysis of Spatiotemporal Variations of Air‐Sea CO2Fluxes in the Kuroshio Region

Abstract

Spatiotemporal variations in air‐sea CO2fluxes in the Kuroshio region were evaluated using measurements made by voluntary cargo ships and research vessels. The data were re‐gridded to produce a 1° × 1° horizontal grid and 0.1‐year timesteps. Spatial clustering showed that the area north of approximately 30°N was the strongest atmospheric CO2sink. The spatial differences were largest in winter and insignificant in summer. The oceanic CO2uptake in the Kuroshio region increased from 2000 to 2019. Changes in the wind speed and total alkalinity affected the decadal increase in CO2absorption. The spatial distributions of the air‐sea CO2fluxes were affected by the Kuroshio large meander (KLM). This effect was likely caused by the change in seawater fCO2via the change in the Kuroshio Extension Path during the KLM period. The Fourier regression technique used in the data analysis was expected to facilitate analyses of the carbonate system in coastal waters, where comprehensive on‐site measurements and satellite analyses are difficult. We analyzed oceanic CO2uptake in the Kuroshio region using measurements from cargo ships and research vessels. The regression technique used in this study improved the spatiotemporal resolution of the data and is expected to be widely applicable for the analysis of other seawater carbonate systems, especially in coastal areas where comprehensive measurements and satellite analysis are difficult. CO2absorption was particularly high in the area north of approximately 30°N. The differences between CO2absorption in that area and other areas were largest in winter and small in summer. The CO2absorption increased between 2000 and 2019. Changes in wind speed and alkalinity affected the increase in CO2absorption. The areal differences in CO2absorption were affected by the Kuroshio large meander. This effect was probably the result of the change of the Kuroshio path during the Kuroshio large meander. 7. Precipitation Changes in a Climate With 2‐K Surface Warming From Large Ensemble Simulations Using 60‐km Global and 20‐km Regional Atmospheric Models

Abstract

A near‐future, 2‐K warming climate simulation comprising over 3,000 years of ensemble simulations was performed using 60‐km global and 20‐km regional atmospheric models. Even in the +2‐K climate, indices of extreme precipitation and dryness increased significantly in the extratropics compared with the historical climate. Mean precipitation increases in the rainy season and decreases in the dry season, indicating that the seasonal precipitation range becomes amplified with global warming. The intensification of precipitation and dryness from +2 to +4 K was also robust in the mean for climatological wet and arid regions. Around Japan, which was classified as a wet region, the regional atmospheric model predicts that the extreme hourly precipitation in the future climate becomes more extreme on hot days, but slightly weaker on cold days. This extreme precipitation has a high sensitivity to air temperature exceeding 7%/K. Our study shows the precipitation changes in the near‐future around the 2040s, +2‐K climate. Even in the +2‐K climate, both extreme precipitation and dryness in the extratropics increase significantly. These results urge to plan for adaptation to extreme weather in the near future. The 2‐K warming climate simulation was performed with over 3,000 years of ensemble member using 60‐km global and 20‐km regional atmospheric models. A large number of ensemble data elucidated statistically significant increment of the precipitation extremes, moreover the amplifying of the seasonal precipitation range. The data are helpful to investigate the climate in the near‐future containing mixed uncertainty both internal variation and effects of future scenario. It would provide valuable information for policy‐making, planning of mitigation, and adaptation for extreme weather events, such as flooding or droughts in the near‐future climate. 8. Influences of test conditions of sandblasting on replicability of abrasion pattern of concrete subjected to hydrodynamic action

Abstract

To determine the most suitable test conditions for sandblasting to evaluate the abrasion resistance against hydrodynamic action, a series of abrasion tests using hardened cement pastes with different water-cement ratios were performed under multiple combinations of air pressure and distance of the blast gun from the surface of a specimen. It was confirmed that the sharpness at the bottom of an abraded part, which largely influences the stability of the determination of the abrasion level, did not depend on the air pressure or the distance. Also, it was revealed that the relative value of the abrasion depth of materials with different abrasion resistances varied depending on the combination of air pressure and distance. This result indicates that when concrete is worn by sandblasting, the concrete surface exhibits different abrasion patterns depending on the conditions of sandblasting because the abrasion resistance of mortar matrix is usually lower than that of coarse aggregate. From the aspect of replicability of the abrasion pattern of concrete surfaces confirmed in in-service structures where coarse aggregates protrude, the combination of an air pressure of 200 kPa and a distance of 50 mm was determined as the most suitable test condition for sandblasting, and the applicability of the determined test condition to the replication of the abrasion pattern was validated.

Abstract

Aiming for the realization of time-resolved specular X-ray reflectivity measurements on the sub-second to millisecond timescales, a conceptually new method of measuring specular X-ray reflectivity curves is developed. Using this method the entire profile of the reflectivity curve of interest is measured in place. A horizontally convergent X-ray beam which has a one-to-one correlation between its direction and energy is realized using a curved crystal or laterally graded multilayers on an elliptic substrate. The X-ray beam is then incident on the surface of the specimen placed at the focus such that the glancing angle in the vertical direction is the same for all X-ray components, which are reflected in the vertical direction by the surface and diverge in the horizontal plane. The perpendicular momentum transfer continuously changes as a function of the horizontal ray direction even with fixed glancing angle since the wavelength (energy) changes. The X-ray intensity distribution across the beam direction measured downstream of the specimen using a one- or two-dimensional detector represents the X-ray reflectivity curve. Specular X-ray reflectivity curves are measured with exposure times ranging from 2 ms to 1 s for a gold film of thickness 14.3 nm on a silicon substrate. The potential of this method for time-resolved measurements is demonstrated by recording reflectivity curves with a time resolution of 20 ms from a rotating specimen.

13. Near-infrared multiwavelength imaging polarimetry of the low-mass proto-stellar object HL Tauri

Abstract

We present the ${\it JHK}$-band high-resolution polarimetric images of the low-mass proto-stellar object HL Tauusing the adaptive optics-equipped CIAO instrument on the Subaru telescope. Our polarization images show a butterfly-shaped polarization disk with an ${\sim}0\farcs9\times3\farcs0$extension. In the nebula, where polarization vectors are centro-symmetrically aligned, the polarization is as high as $P_J \sim30\%$, $P_H\sim42\%$, and $P_K \sim55\%$. On the other hand, low polarizations of $P<3$% in the J, H, and Kbands and a low color excess ratio of $E_{J-H}/E_{H-K}=1.1$compared to the standard cloud value of 1.75 are detected towards the central star. We estimated the upper limit of the grain sizes $a_\mathrm{max}$to be 0.4 μm in the nebula and $\ga$0.7 μm in the line of sight towards the central star. Our high-resolution polarimetric data, which spatially resolves the polarization disk, provides us with important information about grain growth in the region close to the central star.

Abstract

Global ship-based programs, with highly accurate, full water column physical and biogeochemical observations repeated decadally since the 1970s, provide a crucial resource for documenting ocean change. The ocean, a central component of Earth's climate system, is taking up most of Earth's excess anthropogenic heat, with about 19% of this excess in the abyssal ocean beneath 2,000 m, dominated by Southern Ocean warming. The ocean also has taken up about 27% of anthropogenic carbon, resulting in acidification of the upper ocean. Increased stratification has resulted in a decline in oxygen and increase in nutrients in the Northern Hemisphere thermocline and an expansion of tropical oxygen minimum zones. Southern Hemisphere thermocline oxygen increased in the 2000s owing to stronger wind forcing and ventilation. The most recent decade of global hydrography has mapped dissolved organic carbon, a large, bioactive reservoir, for the first time and quantified its contribution to export production (∼20%) and deep-ocean oxygen utilization. Ship-based measurements also show that vertical diffusivity increases from a minimum in the thermocline to a maximum within the bottom 1,500 m, shifting our physical paradigm of the ocean's overturning circulation.

Abstract

Abstract: Multiferroic BaTiO3 with vacancies was reported. BaTiO3 (BTO) nano-particles with the diameter of 15nm were prepared by mechanical milling using planetary ball mill from the commercial BTO. Rotation speeds were selected as 0, 100, 150, 200, 250 and 300rpm. Magnetization was measured by SQUID magnetometer. The 250rpm sample showed the maximal saturation magnetization Ms. The 300rpm sample showed less Ms than that of 250rpm sample. The Ms of 250rpm sample is tenth larger than the result by previous studies. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

20. Preparation of aqueous dispersible styrene-maleic amide encapsulated CoAl2O4 nanocrystals using supercritical water flow type apparatus.

Abstract

Styrene-maleic amide (SMA) encapsulated cobalt blue nanocrystals were synthesised by the supercritical water method using a flow type reactor. A monodisperse, water dispersible nanocrystal blue pigment with the particle size of 5 nm was obtained by SMA encapsulation. Influence of different reaction conditions such as polymer concentration, pH, encapsulation temperature, etc., on the encapsulation and optical property of the cobalt blue nanocrystals is studied in detail. About 6-8 wt-% SMA concentration and the encapsulation temperature between 270 and 300°C were found to be favourable conditions for successful SMA encapsulation. This novel polymer encapsulation process could be used for mass production of different polymer inorganic hybrid materials that can be used in a variety of applications such as metallic finishing, contrast enhancing luminescent pigments, paint production, electronics and high end optical filters. Severe nasal deformity is found in almost all cases of complete cleft lip. This problem has been approached by preoperative nasoalveolar moulding, primary nasal correction and the use of a nostril retainer. We corrected the nasal deformity associated with complete cleft lip by using the combination of a nostril suspender and lip adhesion before cleft lip repair. The present article outlines this treatment strategy and assesses the effects of our treatment on nasal deformity. Methods: Fourteen patients with complete cleft lip and palate were assigned to two groups for retrospective analysis: group A comprised seven patients, who underwent cleft lip repair after a combination of nostril suspension and lip adhesion, while group B had seven patients, who received cleft lip repair alone. In group A, a nostril suspender was fabricated and fitted to each patient at the initial visit, while lip adhesion was done at 1 month of life. At 1 year postoperatively, four parameters (nostril symmetry, alar cartilage slump, alar base level and columellar tilt) were scored on a scale of 1–4 to compare nasal shape between the two groups. Results: With respect to nostril symmetry, alar cartilage slump and columellar tilt, group A showed less deformity compared with group B and the difference between the two groups was statistically significant. Conclusions: The use of a nostril suspender and lip adhesion can achieve dynamic correction of the nasal deformity associated with complete cleft lip. Previous reconstruction methods of whistling deformity have been limited in volume due to the necessity for primary closure of the donor site. This article presents a new method for secondary reconstruction of the vermilion deformity in patients with cleft lip. Our method is very simple and advantageous, in that primary closure after correction is not required. A rectangular mucosal flap is designed at the wet mucosal aspect of the upper lip. Inferiorly, this flap is based at the junction of the vermilion and mucosa, while the upper incision line should be at the buccal sulcus. This rectangular flap is advanced sagittally, and a labial thickness is reconstructed. Artificial dermis is grafted to the mucosal defect after flap advancement and mucosa regenerates secondarily. We applied this technique to secondary reconstruction in 32 patients with cleft lip between January 2001 and January 2005. Major complications (necrosis of mucosal flap and recurrence of whistling deformity) did not occur in any of the patients. Four patients required minor operations to reduce the volume. Conclusions: This rectangular mucosal flap with artificial dermis offers many advantages, including easy technique and minimal sacrifices. The combination of mucosal flap and artificial dermis prevents postoperative scar contracture and reduces the limitations of using the available volume of flap. We believe that this procedure is versatile and reliable not only for whistling deformity in cleft lip patients, but also for tissue defects of the lip resulting from other causes. blacklight-eds_languages"><p class="truncate-text"> Abstract: The role of phagocytosis in eliminating apoptotic spermatogenic cells caused by mono(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (MEHP) was studied. Twenty-one-day-old C57Bl/6N male mice were given a single dose of 800mg/kg MEHP in corn oil by oral gavage and sacrificed at 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9 days after initial exposure. At the same time, the role of phagocytosis in MEHP related apoptosis was examined using microinjection of annexin V into the seminiferous tubules of living mice. Results showed that mice treated with MEHP had a lower rate of testis weight gain (lower regression line) and a significant TUNEL-positive spermatogenic cell number compared to control. However, this incident was reversible, and the number of TUNEL-positive cells returned to normal after 9 days. Mice microinjected with annexin V and later treated with MEHP showed a large amount of TUNEL-positive cells compared to mice treated with MEHP only. This clearly proves that phagocytosis plays an efficient and highly important role in eliminating dead cells in the injured testis of mice treated with MEHP. Two capsules of the study drug were administered orally 3 times daily (i.e., before meals) for 8 weeks. Among 265 patients enrolled in the study, 134 were assigned to the TJ-15 group and 131 were assigned to the placebo group, of whom 204 patients (103 in the TJ-15 group and 101 in the placebo group) were included in the efficacy and utility analyze and 251 patients (128 in the TJ-15 group and 123 in the placebo group) were included in the safety analysis. Efficacy was significantly higher in the TJ-15 group based on the total score for the accessory symptoms of hypertensions which was the primary efficacy endpoint (Wilcoxon''s rank sum test, ). When each accessory symptom of hypertension was assessed separately, efficacy was higher for hot flushes and facial suffusion in the TJ-15 group (Wilcoxon''s rank sum test, , and , respectively). There were no significant differences between the TJ-15 and the placebo groups with respect to the decrease of blood pressure or the antihypertensive effect. There was also no significant difference between the two groups with regard to the overall safety rating. The utility rating was significantly higher in the TJ-15 group than in the placebo group (Wilcoxon''s rank sum test, ). The bindings of ski boards are not always equipped with a release mechanism. We experienced three cases of leg bone fracture obtained while skiing on ski boards without a release mechanism. All 3 cases were males who had been skiing on ski boards for 1, 3, and 6 years, respectively. The fractures occurred as a spiral fracture running distally from the center of the tibia in all 3 cases. Surgical reduction and internal fixation were performed with intramedullary nail in 2 cases and with plates in 1 case. In all 3 cases their feet were not released from the bindings of the ski boards when they fell, so their legs probably experienced circumflex force, resulting in the spiral fracture of the tibia. Ski boards have become popular because they allow skiers to perform acrobatic stunts, such as air tricks, and enjoy carving turns in ski runs. When ski boards are used for skiing on ski runs, the release mechanism as used for normal skis to release skiers from the bindings reduces the risk of injuries. In contrast, the bindings without release mechanism may be safer for ski boards used for acrobatic stunts because the release mechanism may incorrectly function on the landing of air tricks to cause injuries. For safety, those who enjoy air tricks should use ski boards without a release mechanism with full knowledge of the risks involved, while those who enjoy skiing on ski runs should use ski boards with an appropriate release mechanism. From these images, regional fractional ventilation was calculated and maps generated detailing the distribution of fractional ventilation in the lung. The 1.56 mm x 1.56 mm x 4 mm regions of interest were assigned on 5 cm x 5 cm field of view lung maps. Histograms were also generated showing the frequency distribution of fractional ventilation values. To compare fractional ventilation values between animals, the ventilation procedure was standardized to results from individual pulmonary function tests. Each animal's spontaneous tidal volume, respiratory rate, and inspiration percentage (percent of total respiratory cycle in inspiration) were used in their mechanical ventilation settings.<bold>Results: </bold>Results were similar among all five healthy rats based on examination of ventilation distribution maps and frequency distribution histograms. Mean (0.13) and standard deviation (0.07) were calculated for fractional ventilation in each animal. However, these values were determined to be influenced by slice selection, and therefore the maps and histograms were favored in analysis of results.<bold>Conclusion: </bold>This study shows consistent results in healthy rat lungs and will serve as a baseline study for future measurements in emphysematous rat lungs. In flow regime identification, a new approach was employed to minimize the subjective judgment. It was found that the flow regimes in the co-current downward flow strongly depend on the channel size. In addition, various local two-phase flow parameters were acquired by the multi-sensor miniaturized conductivity probe in bubbly flow. Furthermore, the area-averaged data acquired by the impedance void meter were analyzed using the drift flux model. Three different distributions parameters were developed for different ranges of non-dimensional superficial velocity, defined by the ration of total superficial velocity to the drift velocity. Several studies have used well-established detection and attribution methods to demonstrate that the observed basin-scale temperature changes are consistent with model responses to anthropogenic forcing and inconsistent with model-based estimates of natural variability. These studies relied on a single observational data set and employed results from only one or two models. Recent identification of systematic instrumental biases in expendable bathythermograph data has led to improved estimates of ocean temperature variability and trends and provide motivation to revisit earlier detection and attribution studies. We examine the causes of ocean warming using these improved observational estimates, together with results from a large multimodel archive of externally forced and unforced simulations. The time evolution of upper ocean temperature changes in the newer observational estimates is similar to that of the multimodel average of simulations that include the effects of volcanic eruptions. Our detection and attribution analysis systematically examines the sensitivity of results to a variety of model and data-processing choices. Twelve patients with various brain tumors were treated with HT-CSI. Median patient age was 14 years (range: 4–37 years). Median CSI dose was 30.6 Gy in 18 fractions (range: 23.4–40 Gy in 13–25 fractions). Toxicities were assessed according to the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events version 4.0. Before CSI, 11 patients (92%) received neoadjuvant chemotherapy, so acute toxicity was evaluated by comparing patient status before and after CSI. HT-CSI plans were compared with linac-based CSI plans made using Pinnacle3planning system in 9 patients. All patients completed planned CSI without interruption. Grade 3 or higher toxicities were leukopenia seen in 11 patients (92%), anorexia in 6 (50%), anemia in 5 (42%), and thrombopenia in 5 (42%). Administration of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor, platelet transfusion and total parenteral nutrition were required in 8 (67%), 5 (42%) and 5 (42%) patients, respectively. HT plans were superior to linac-based plans in terms of homogeneity and conformality in planning target volume (PTV). For most organs at risk (OARs), volumes receiving more than 10 Gy (V10 Gy) or 20 Gy (V20 Gy) were lower in HT plans. However, HT plans significantly increased mean doses to the lung, kidneys and liver, and V5 Gy of 6 OARs including the lung. Despite intensive neoadjuvant chemotherapy, acute toxicity of HT-CSI was acceptable. HT provided better dose distribution in PTV than conventional linac. It is a multimode optical instrument, including integral field spectrograph (IFS) and Fabry-Perot imager modes. We have designed it compact so that we can mount it on 2 m class telescopes as well as on the 8.2 m Subaru telescope. Special care was taken to obtain high-quality calibrations in the IFS mode. In order to remove the chromatic aberration of micropupil images produced by a lenslet array, we have introduced a corrector lens system behind the lenslet array. The internal calibration system simulates the telescope optics so that the system provides micropupil images identical to those produced by the telescope. The rigidness of the instrument provides the positional stability of micropupil images. We have succeeded in test observations of all the modes on Subaru and the University of Hawaii 88 in (UH88) telescopes and have verified the performance of the instrument. This includes the instrument efficiencies as well as the effective sky background subtraction and the minimization of crosstalk effects in the IFS mode. In the IFS mode a spatial resolution of 0.4? was obtained in good seeing conditions. Each of 37 × 37 lenslets subtends 0.1? in Subaru's case. This samples the image size well. The perpendicular momentum transfer continuously changes as a function of the horizontal ray direction even with fixed glancing angle since the wavelength (energy) changes. The X-ray intensity distribution across the beam direction measured downstream of the specimen using a one- or two-dimensional detector represents the X-ray reflectivity curve. Specular X-ray reflectivity curves are measured with exposure times ranging from 2 ms to 1 s for a gold film of thickness 14.3 nm on a silicon substrate. We obtained JHK-band polarimetric images using the adaptive optics instruments NACO on the VLT, and CIAO on the Subaru telescope.Results. Our NACO JKS-band images of ~0[Formula: see text][Formula: see text]1 angular resolution resolve clearly the R?Mon binary system as well as twisted string-like features in the fan-shaped lobe. The polarimetric images reveal a butterfly-shaped polarization disk with an almost constant shape and an extension of 4? in the J, H, and K?bands. In this region, the polarization values are as low as PJ?7%, PH?2%, and PK?1%, and the polarization vectors are not systematically aligned along the equatorial plane. On the other hand, highly polarized scattered light is detected in the fan-shaped lobe (PJ?24%, PH?33%, and PK?53%).Conclusions. Our polarimetric data suggests the presence of multiple grain populations in the R?Mon nebula. From our one-dimensional single scattering modeling, the maximum grain size in the nebula at large scale is estimated to be 0.23??m. To assess the neurological and walking status of 56 elderly patients after cervical myelopathy to determine whether the surgery was justified.Methods. Records of 23 men and 33 women aged 75 to 86 (mean, 79) years who underwent laminoplasty for cervical myelopathy were retrospectively reviewed. They had been followed up for a mean of 3.5 (range, 0.2–8.6) years. Walking status was assessed according to long-term care insurance criteria. In 45 patients with more than 2 years of follow-up, neurological status was evaluated according to the Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA) score. Neurological recovery rate was classified as excellent, good, fair, poor, and worse.Results. Postoperatively, of the 47 patients still living, 22 could walk independently, 22 required assistance outdoors, 2 were using a wheelchair, and one was bedridden. The mean JOA score was 9.7 preoperatively, 12.2 one year postoperatively, and 11.8 at final assessment (p<0.001). The mean neurological recovery rate was 29% at one-year follow-up and 24% at final assessment (p=0.06).Conclusion. The dynamic range we have achieved is ΔK = 13 at 2.5″ from the central star. For a typical target with K = 7 at 10 pc, the limiting absolute magnitude is MK = 20. We apply two kinematical age criteria to select M and K dwarfs statistically younger than 350Myr. The first criterion is a small velocity deviation from the velocity of LSR. The second is a (U, V,W ) velocity vector similar to a particular young moving group. The combination of the age and magnitude limits implies that the mass limit for giant planet detection is about 2 MJ. We show a sample image of a target field at 3 pc of the Sun with faint companion candidates, to be followed up for the common proper motion test. The optical properties and microstructures of the arrays were measured by angle-resolved reflection spectroscopy. The spectra indicate an increase in the refractive index and a decrease in the interplane spacing with compression, however, indicating an increase in the interplane spacing with shearing stress. The titania−nanosheets-coated polystyrene latex was prepared by the layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly coating process, involving alternating lamination of cationic polyelectrolytes and anionic titania nanosheets on monodisperse polystyrene latex particles. The Bragg diffraction peak of the colloidal crystalline array shifted to longer wavelengths with the coating of titania nanosheets. This red shift was caused by an increase in refractive index upon coating, as revealed by angle-resolved reflection spectra measurements. Colloidal crystal films with large domain sizes were successfully fabricated almost over the cell (~10 cm<SUP>2</SUP>) without applying any external force at room temperature. During the drying process, three distinct conditions were observed, in each of which the films exhibited different optical properties. Films with high transmittance were formed in the first stage. Upon further solvent evaporation, the films entered a medium transmittance state via an extremely low transmittance state. Angle-resolved reflection spectroscopy, which was used to analyze the three conditions, revealed that close-packed arrays with water-filled spaces between were formed in the first stage. One-directional flow was generated in the cell because water evaporation occurred only at the opening. A high-speed digital video camera was applied in the flow visualization study to capture the flow structures and bubble interaction phenomena, while a miniaturized four-sensor conductivity probe was used to acquire the time-averaged local void fraction, interfacial velocity, and bubble number frequency. Also, the interfacial area concentration and the averaged bubble Sauter mean diameter were obtained from the local measurements. Eight healthy male subjects participated in a double-blind, placebo-controlled study after informed consent. They subjected to static equilibrium tests, oculomotor tests and an assay of drug concentrations in the blood. Zolpidem was statistically significant in postural sway in tandem stance test, as defined by parametric values of tracing sum length and polygonal area of foot pressure center measured by a gait analysis system. In the tandem stance test, triazolam was statistically significant in postural sway only as defined by the polygonal area. However, in the Romberg test, the only statistically significant difference in zolpidem use was observed in polygonal area values. Blood concentrations of triazolam and zolpidem were found to closely correlate with the extent of postural sway in both tandem stance and Romberg tests. In this study, zolpidem with minimal muscle-relaxant effect incurred imbalance more extensively than triazolam, which is known for its effect of muscle relaxation. In addition, gaze deviation nystagmus was observed only in zolpidem use in 5 of 8 subjects (62.5%). From these results, it is suggested that in the use of hypnotics, sway derives from the suppression of the central nervous system relevant to awakening rather than from muscle relaxation. The prior reference to blood concentrations of hypnotics should help improve safety care in minimizing loss of balance control and possible fall.Copyright © 2005 S. A total of seven data sets were acquired in the flow range of the void fraction from 1.01% to 3.36% and the liquid Reynolds number from 1,400 to 4,750. The measurements were also performed in the similar flow range at normal gravity conditions. The characteristics of various flow regimes were demonstrated by the acquired impedance signals. The statistical parameters from the impedance signals were then fed into a self-organizing neural network for pattern categorization. Based on flow visualization, the classified patterns were translated into corresponding flow regimes. In addition, an analytical model was developed to predict the regime transition from cap bubbly to slug flows. Good agreement was obtained between the results by the neural network and the analytical model. The current study derives the transport equations for the bubble number, volume, and interfacial area concentration. Accounting for the substantial differences in the transport phenomena of various sizes of bubbles, both one-group and two-group interfacial area transport equations are developed along with the necessary constitutive relations. The framework for the complicated source and sink terms in the two-group transport equation is also presented by identifying the major intragroup and intergroup bubble interaction mechanisms. In view of evaluating the theoretical model, the one-group interfacial area transport equation is benchmarked based on the available data obtained in a wide range of air-water bubbly flow in round tubes of various diameters. Photochemical properties of coumarin-4-ylmethoxy carbonates (<BO>1a</BO>−<BO>d</BO>) are investigated to construct caged compounds of hydroxy-containing molecules. All the compounds possess desired properties as phototriggers for alcohols and phenols. The 6-bromo-7-hydroxycoumarin-4-ylmethoxycarbonyl (Bhcmoc) group has the highest photochemical efficiency and is applied to make caged compounds of 1,2-dioctanoylglycerol (diC<INF>8</INF>), Tyr-OMe,
