1. Association between anti-SSA autoantibodies and conduction disturbances in heart failure.

Abstract

Conduction disturbances play an important role in the occurrence and development of heart failure (HF). Studies suggest autoantibodies may attack the conduction system. However, whether autoantibodies are associated with conduction disturbances in patients with HF is unclear. The purpose of this study was to assess whether anti-SSA, anti-Ro/Sjögren syndrome-related antigen A antibodies known for congenital atrioventricular block (AVB), is associated with conduction disturbances in patients with HF. This retrospective observational study used data from patients with HF who were admitted to Beijing Anzhen Hospital between January 2018 and June 2022. Patients who were tested for anti-SSA and had undergone electrocardiographic examination during hospitalization were included. Conduction disturbances, including AVB, bundle branch block (BBB), and intraventricular conduction delay, were confirmed by a cardiologist blinded to anti-SSA status. Univariate and multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to assess the association between anti-SSA and conduction disturbances. A total of 766 patients were included in this study, of whom 70 (9.1%) were anti-SSA positive. Subjects who were anti-SSA positive showed a higher prevalence of AVB (20% vs 10.6%) and BBB (27.3 % vs 10.9 %), including both left BBB and right BBB (all P <.05). After adjusting for known risk factors, anti-SSA was independently associated with AVB (odds ratio [OR] 2.42; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.18–5.43; P =.03) and BBB (OR 3.15; 95% CI 1.68–5.89; P <.001). Anti-SSA is independently associated with AVB and BBB in patients with HF. Further study of the role of autoantibodies in the development of conduction abnormalities in patients with HF to generate possible targeted treatments is required. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This article intends to explore the actual role of the Dutch East India Company during the Dutch colonial period from 1624 to 1662, when Taiwan became a sugar supply center and its trade status was upgraded from a trading relay station to a trading center for sugar trade with Eurasian markets. This article tests the established model and hypothesis through five dimensions. Except for the fourth dimension, the others all obtain support for the hypothesis. The research results found that whether it is from the improvement of Taiwan's sugar supply and sugar trade status, or the booming period of the Dutch East India Company's sugar trade and the two-stage rise in European sugar prices, in addition to marking changes in Taiwan's industrial transformation and trade status, all of this highlights that the Dutch East India Company indeed played a pivotal role in Taiwan during this process. 4. Effect of Intensive Blood Pressure Control on Cardiovascular Outcomes in Cancer Survivors.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: To evaluate whether cancer modifies the effect of intensive blood pressure control on major cardiovascular outcomes. METHODS: Using data of the SPRINT (Systolic Blood Pressure Intervention Trial), we compared the risk of the composite outcomes of myocardial infarction, other acute coronary syndromes, stroke, heart failure, and cardiovascular death in patients with and without a history of cancer. Using Cox proportional hazards regression, we tested interactions between history of cancer and intensive blood pressure control on major cardiovascular outcomes. RESULTS: The study included a total of 9336 patients, with a mean age of 67.9±9.4 years, among whom 2066 (22.2%) were cancer survivors. Over a median follow-up of 3.2 years, 561 primary cardiovascular outcomes were observed. Cancer survivors had a similar risk of experiencing the primary outcome compared with patients without cancer after multivariable adjustment (adjusted hazard ratio, 0.94 [95% CI, 0.77–1.15]). Intensive blood pressure control reduced risk of the primary cardiovascular outcome similarly for cancer survivors (hazard ratio, 0.70 [95% CI, 0.51–0.97]) and patients without cancer (HR, 0.76 [95% CI, 0.63–0.93]; P for interaction 0.74). CONCLUSIONS: In SPRINT study, intensive blood pressure treatment reduced the risk of major cardiovascular events in cancer survivors to a similar extent to that of patients without cancer. Cancer history not requiring active treatment in last 2 years should not be an obstacle to intensive treatment of hypertension. Abstract

This paper concerns with the design of algebraic disturbance estimation method for the fractional order Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy systems with noisy output measurements. At first, the overall fractional order fuzzy system model is given for the studied system. By constructing a family of fractional order modulating functions, algebraic integral formulas are derived for the disturbance by using the overall fractional order fuzzy system model. Based on the system’s input and output, these formulas can be algebraically computed in both noise-free and noisy cases. Simulation results are shown to validate the efficiency of the proposed algebraic disturbance estimation method against output measurement noises.

6. Adaptive Prescribed-Time Stabilization of Uncertain Nonlinear Systems With Unknown Control Directions

Abstract

This article studies the adaptive prescribed-time control problem for a class of nonlinear systems with unknown time-varying control coefficients. Existing methods for unknown control direction problems can only achieve asymptotic stability based on Barbalat's lemma. Different from these results, we present a new theorem in conjunction with Nussbaum functions to achieve the prescribed-time stability. Meanwhile, the conservative condition of Nussbaum parameters is relaxed under time-varying control coefficients, which increases the applicability of the control algorithm. Based on this theorem, an adaptive prescribed-time control method for high-order nonlinear systems is proposed, which guarantees that the state variables of the system converge to zero in a prescribed time rather than infinity. Finally, theoretical analysis and numerical simulations are provided to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

7. A New Event-Triggered Adaptive Fixed-Time Control Design for Uncertain Nonlinear Systems

Abstract

This article investigates the problem of dynamic memory event-triggered (DMET) fixed-time tracking control within time-varying asymmetric constraints for nonaffine nonstrict-feedback uncertain nonlinear systems with unmodeled dynamics and unknown disturbances. The existing dynamic event-triggered control methods cannot handle the nonlinear systems with unmodeled dynamics and nonaffine inputs, which greatly limits the applicability of the strategy. To this end, a novel DMET adaptive fuzzy fixed-time control protocol is constructed based on the idea of command filtered backstepping, in which a new dynamic signal function is established to deal with the unmodeled dynamics and an improved DMET mechanism (DMETM) is designed to solve the problem of nonaffine inputs. It is proved that the newly DMET control strategy ensures the tracking error converges to an arbitrarily small compact set in a fixed time and all the signals of the closed-loop systems are bounded. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated by two simulation examples.

8. Global Distributed Fault-Tolerant Consensus Control of Nonlinear Delayed Multiagent Systems With Hybrid Faults

Abstract

This article is concerned with the distributed leader-following fault-tolerant consensus control problem of uncertain nonlinear delayed multiagent systems with hybrid faults including actuator faults and sensor faults. The faults are described as unknown time-varying functions, which can cause uncertain changes in the fault coefficients of sensors and actuators. In this case, we put forward a novel distributed consensus algorithm. First, we transform the consensus problem into the stability one of a single system by utilizing the sensor fault model and directed topology. Then, the dynamic gain is devised to compensate for uncertain parameters. Based on the backstepping control method, a distributed dynamic controller is designed via measurement data of nonideal sensors. By means of a new Lyapunov function, it is strictly proved that the designed controller can render all agents realizing the full-state consensus in the global sense. Moreover, the proposed algorithm allows that nonlinear dynamics include the state delays, and can be expanded to a fully distributed result. Finally, an example of application in chemical reactor systems is presented to confirm the effectiveness of our theoretical results.

Here, we report kidney function and outcomes over 110 weeks from the double-blind final analysis.

10. A Delay Classification-Based Approach to Distributed Consensus of Nonlinear Time-Delay Multiagent Systems

Abstract

This article investigates the problem of the fixed directed topology-based leader–following consensus control for nonlinear multiagent systems with output delays. Diverging from existing results, this study focuses on large time-varying output delay. Taking this condition into account, a novel delay classification-based distributed output feedback consensus algorithm is developed. First, we divide the output delay into two types through a designed constant and introduce a switching signal to distinguish these two types. Then, we build a distributed compensator for each follower using relevant outputs to reconstitute the leader–following tracking errors. This compensator relies on the output delay and is irrelevant to the nonlinear dynamics of the system. Then, we design a distributed linear controller for each follower with the compensator's assistance. Subsequently, a new unified Lyapunov–Krasovskii functional is developed to prove that all agents can realize leader–following full-state consensus with the action of the controller. We also provide sufficient conditions to demonstrate the controller's validity. Finally, a simulation example is supplied to validate the efficiency of our algorithm.

11. Adaptive command filter constraint control of rolling mill torsional vibration under current harmonic

Abstract

An adaptive command filter control strategy was proposed to realize the asymptotic tracking of the roll speed, which successfully suppressed torsional vibration for the main drive system of the rolling mill with nonlinear friction, nonlinear damping, current harmonic, time-varying stiffness and unknown disturbance. A finite time predetermined performance method was proposed, so that the speed tracking error of the main transmission system was always constrained in the performance function and converged to its minimum boundary within the specified time. Based on the adaptive estimation of harmonic amplitude, the torque control law of the motor was obtained by using the filter backstepping method, which prevented the torsional vibration of the system caused by the input fluctuation and avoided the complexity explosion of the controller design, and the stability of the closed-loop system was strictly proved by the Lyapunov theory. The actual numerical simulation verified the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy.

13. Extended-state-observer-based robust torsional vibration suppression for rolling mill main drive system with input saturation

Abstract

A robust torsional vibration suppression strategy is proposed for the main drive system of the rolling mill subject to uncertainties, disturbances and input saturation. With given model information incorporated into observer design, an extended state observer that relies only on roller speed measurements is developed to estimate the system states and lumped uncertainties of the rolling mill main drive system. To handle the motor torque saturation, an auxiliary signal system with the same order as the plant is constructed. The error between the control input and plant input is taken as the input of the constructed auxiliary system, and a number of signals are generated to compensate for the effect of the motor torque saturation. Furthermore, a robust output feedback controller is introduced to obtain better transient and steady-state performance of the rolling mill main drive system and the stability of the closed-loop system is strictly proved via Lyapunov theory. Finally, comparative simulations are performed to verify the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed control strategy.

14. Destination endorsers raising on short-form travel videos: Self-image construction and endorsement effect measurement

Abstract

Celebrity endorsements raised with short-form travel videos have nurtured a new channel for tourism destinations. The present paper aims to identify the features of endorsers and the influencing factors of endorsement effectiveness in short-form travel videos scenarios via two studies. Employing parasocial interaction theory and match-up hypothesis theory, Study 1 constructed the comprehensive image of the destination celebrity and identified the celebrity's self-image characteristic attributes via content analysis. Adopting regression analysis, Study 2 examined the relationship between endorsers' self-image traits and destination endorsement effectiveness. The findings provide theoretical and managerial implications for tourism celebrity endorsement and destination marketing in the social media context.

Abstract

IMPORTANCE: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) confers significant risk of acute kidney injury (AKI). Patients with COVID-19 with AKI have high mortality rates. OBJECTIVE: Individuals with African ancestry with 2 copies of apolipoprotein L1 (APOL1) variants G1 or G2 (high-risk group) have significantly increased rates of kidney disease. We tested the hypothesis that the APOL1 high-risk group is associated with a higher-risk of COVID-19–associated AKI and death. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This retrospective cohort study included 990 participants with African ancestry enrolled in the Million Veteran Program who were hospitalized with COVID-19 between March 2020 and January 2021 with available genetic information. EXPOSURES: The primary exposure was having 2 APOL1 risk variants (RV) (APOL1 high-risk group), compared with having 1 or 0 risk variants (APOL1 low-risk group). MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: The primary outcome was AKI. The secondary outcomes were stages of AKI severity and death. Multivariable logistic regression analyses adjusted for preexisting comorbidities, medications, and inpatient AKI risk factors; 10 principal components of ancestry were performed to study these associations. We performed a subgroup analysis in individuals with normal kidney function prior to hospitalization (estimated glomerular filtration rate ≥60 mL/min/1.73 m2). RESULTS: Of the 990 participants with African ancestry, 905 (91.4%) were male with a median (IQR) age of 68 (60-73) years. Overall, 392 (39.6%) patients developed AKI, 141 (14%) developed stages 2 or 3 AKI, 28 (3%) required dialysis, and 122 (12.3%) died. One hundred twenty-five (12.6%) of the participants were in the APOL1 high-risk group. Patients categorized as APOL1 high-risk group had significantly higher odds of AKI (adjusted odds ratio [OR], 1.95; 95% CI, 1.27-3.02; P = .002), higher AKI severity stages (OR, 2.03; 95% CI, 1.37-2.99; P &lt; .001), and death (OR, 2.15; 95% CI, 1.22-3.72; P = .007). The association with AKI persisted in the subgroup with normal kidney function (OR, 1.93; 95% CI, 1.15-3.26; P = .01). Data analysis was conducted between February 2021 and April 2021. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: In this cohort study of veterans with African ancestry hospitalized with COVID-19 infection, APOL1 kidney risk variants were associated with higher odds of AKI, AKI severity, and death, even among individuals with prior normal kidney function.

Abstract

Background/purpose: Prophylactic hemodialysis after coronary angiography in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) prevents contrast nephropathy; however, the one-year outcomes are unclear. This study aimed to investigate the one-year outcomes of prophylactic hemodialysis against standard treatment in patients with CKD who underwent coronary angiography.Methods: A cohort study of 359 patients with CKD, coronary artery disease (CAD), and serum creatinine levels of 176.8-530.4 μmol/L, who were referred for elective coronary angiography was conducted. Propensity score matching identified 118 patient pairs for outcome comparisons. The hemodialysis group underwent prophylactic hemodialysis after coronary angiography, whereas the control group received standard treatment. The study's primary outcome was free from dialysis was considered the primary outcome, whereas the secondary outcome was overall survival. Unadjusted estimates of the probability of free from dialysis and overall survival were computed using Kaplan-Meier survival curves and log-rank tests. Cox proportional-hazards regression models were used in determining the risk factors associated with ESRD and mortality.Results: During a mean 9.3 months follow-up duration, the hemodialysis group had significantly better free from dialysis (85.6% vs. 64.4%; P = 0.002) and overall survival (85.4% vs. 78.5%; P = 0.008) rates than the control group. Cox proportional-hazards regression analyses of the propensity score-matched patients showed that the hemodialysis group had reduced risks for ESRD and mortality (hazard ratios, 0.32 and 0.48, respectively).Conclusion: Prophylactic Hemodialysis following coronary angiography was associated with reduced ESRD and mortality risks in CKD patients with CAD, who did not routinely undergo dialysis. 18. Understanding tour guides’ service failure: Integrating a two-tier triadic business model with attribution theory

Abstract

Tour guides are integral parts of the group package tour (GPT) and key front-line employees in the tourism industry. Previous research on tour guides has not been extended to the era of online travel shopping. We thus proposed and examined a two-tier triadic business model consisting of the online travel agent (OTA), the offline travel supplier (OTS), tourists and tour guides using a mixed methodology. The results indicated that attribution theory plays a role in tourists' repurchase intention only towards the OTA and not towards the OTS. However, across all scenarios, the interaction effects of tour guides' attitude and attribution dimensions on repurchase intention are significant. Notably, tourists’ repurchase intention is always higher towards an OTA than towards an OTS in all service failure conditions. Implications of tour guide service quality management and online travel marketing are also provided.

Abstract

Aquatic acidification has been becoming a major issue in recent years. Concomitant with aquatic acidification, Aluminum (Al) toxicity also pose threat to the fish. The purpose of the present study was to assess the combined effect of aquatic acidification and Al on ion concentrations in plasma, ATPase activities in liver and kidney, and health status of fish. Juvenile common carp were exposed to solutions with different combined concentrations of pH (7, 5) and Al (0, 800 µg L-1) for 1, 3, 9 days. We found that 9 days exposure to Al increased the levels of Na+ and Cl-. The K+ level significantly increased in low pH and low pH/Al treatments after exposure for 1 and 9 days. Furthermore, the activities of Na+/K+-ATPase and Ca2+-ATPase in liver were significantly decreased after exposure for 3 and 9 days, which indicated that the liver played an important role in coping with the stress. Besides, the increase of RBC and decrease of WBC also reconfirmed the toxic effect of low pH and Al on common carp. 29. Percutaneous Angioplasty Using a Paclitaxel-Coated Balloon Improves Target Lesion Restenosis on Inflow Lesions of Autogenous Radiocephalic Fistulas: A Pilot Study.

Abstract: Purpose: To determine whether the use of a paclitaxel-coated balloon (PCB) improves patency in patients undergoing percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) for recurrent juxtaanastomotic stenosis of radiocephalic arteriovenous fistulas (RCAVFs). Material and Methods: This prospective study recruited hemodialysis patients with two short (< 2 cm) and separated inflow RCAVF lesions. After dilation of lesions using a 4-mm plain balloon (PB), half of the lesions were randomly selected for treatment with PTA using PCB (size, 4 mm; length, 2 cm) and PB (size, 5-mm or 6-mm) (group 1), and the other half were treated with PTA using PB alone (group 2). After the index PTA, dysfunction-driven angiography was performed to confirm target lesion restenosis (TLR). TLR and lesion patency were compared in the two groups by χ2 test, t test, and Kaplan-Meier analysis. Results: The analysis of 20 lesions in 10 patients revealed that the TLR-free duration in group 1 was significantly longer than the TLR-free duration in group 2 (251.2 d vs 103.2 d; P < .01). The patency rate of the target lesion was significantly higher in group 1 than in group 2 at 6 months (70% vs 0%; P < .01) but not at 12 months (20% vs 0%; P > .05). Conclusions: This early study suggests that, for improving short-term patency, PTA with PCB and PB is more effective than PTA with PB alone, warranting further study. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

32. Effects of Denosumab and Calcitriol on Severe Secondary Hyperparathyroidism in Dialysis Patients With Low Bone Mass

Context:Secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) may worsen with administration of denosumab in chronic renal failure patients with low bone mass.Objective:This study aimed to evaluate the short-term effect of coadministration of calcitriol and denosumab on PTH secretion and parathyroid structure and the incidence of adverse effects in patients with SHPT and low bone mass.Design and Setting:This was a 24-week, open-label study at Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.Patients:Dialysis patients with SHPT (intact parathyroid hormone [iPTH] > 800 pg/mL) and low bone mass (T score < −2.5) were enrolled.Intervention:Patients received denosumab (60 mg) and doses of calcitriol adjusted to achieve iPTH < 300 pg/mL.Main Outcome Measures:Parathyroid gland volume was assessed upon study initiation and completion. Serum calcium, phosphate, alkaline phosphatase, iPTH, and adverse effects were assessed at each visit (Day 7, 14, and 21, and every month thereafter).Results:iPTH significantly decreased (mean decrease, 58.28 ± 6.12%) with denosumab/calcitriol administration (P< .01) but not in the controls (patients not receiving denosumab). Parathyroid gland volume decreased (mean decrease, 21.98 ± 5.54%) with denosumab/calcitriol administration (P< .01) and progressively increased (20.58 ± 4.48%) in the controls (P< .05). Serum alkaline phosphatase and iPTH levels were significantly correlated to decreased iPTH and regression of parathyroid hyperplasia (P< .05). The most common adverse events were hypocalcemia (33.33%) and respiratory tract infection (4.17%). Hypocalcemia rapidly resolved with calcium and calcitriol supplements.Conclusions:Denosumab allows for supra-physiologic doses of calcitriol resulting in decreased parathyroid secretion and parathyroid hyperplasia. Supervised administration and weekly laboratory and clinical monitoring of serum calcium are recommended during the first month to prevent hypocalcemia.

AbstractBackground:Ultrafiltration is an adjunctive treatment for decompensated heart failure patients with cardiorenal syndrome. The efficacy and safety of ultrafiltration in the patient cohort are still unknown. Methods:We systematically reviewed and evaluated randomized controlled trials, comparing diuretics with ultrafiltration in adult patients with decompensated heart failure and cardiorenal syndrome through January 2014. The primary outcomes were body weight loss and total fluid removal. Results:We identified 8 trials including 608 patients. In a random-effects model, the pooled difference of body weight loss was 1.44 kg between patients receiving ultrafiltration and diuretics (95 CI, 0.29-2.59; p = 0.01). The difference of fluid removal was 1.28 l between groups (95 CI, 0.43-2.12; p = 0.003). The RR for mortality was 0.90 for ultrafiltration compared with diuretics (95 CI, 0.61-1.33; p = 0.60) and the RR for renal function deterioration was 1.29 (95 CI, 0.90-1.85; p = 0.17). There is a trend toward reducing readmission rate in ultrafiltration group. Conclusions:Ultrafiltration is a safe and effective strategy in the treatment of cardiorenal syndrome without increasing the risk of renal deterioration.© 2015 S. Karger AG, Basel

This paper also introduced various remediation technologies for antimony and arsenic contaminated soil. Finally, the trend for future technical development in remediation of antimony and arsenic in contaminated soils and speciation analysis is prospected.

Abstract

Decision making in a semistructured or unstructured problem should consist of a combination of solution procedures, probabilistic reasoning, and human judgments. Such processes mostly involve in evaluating multi-objectives or attributes while making decisions. In addition, they are always complied with the decision makers' inward probabilistic structure, which will be tedious without the assistance of Decision Support System. In this study, a novel mechanism for Multi-intelligent Agents to reflect probabilistic reasoning from domain experts, negotiate among decision groups, share mutual information, and evaluate multi-decision variables to generate corresponding unique solution was proposed. The decision makers' reasoning experience and styles are configured by the Interior Bayesian Belief Network (BBN), pooling factors, and adaptation parameters while employing Intelligent Agents to negotiate and evaluate events coordinately. The negotiation mechanism is based on information theoretic measurements to automatically pool group members' opinions and then trigger self-adaptations of agents. Exterior BBN also exhibits the dependence of group members in order to model the mutual impacts among them. Abstract

Background/purpose: High-resolution computed tomography (μ??) was used to construct three-dimensional (3D) morphology of root canal systems of primary molars. Materials and methods: Twenty-nine extracted primary molars, including eight maxillary first molars, 10 maxillary second molars, two mandibular first molars, and nine mandibular second molars, without obvious root resorption were used. ? μ?? device was used to scan the teeth. Data were processed to reconstruct 3D images. Roots and root canal systems were analyzed from 3D images of the teeth and cross-sectional μ?? images at different root levels. Results: In primary molars, numbers of roots and root canals varied from two to three and three to four, respectively. Maxillary molars exhibited more one-canal than two-canal roots, yet there were equal numbers in mandibular molars. Fusion between the distobuccal and palatal roots in maxillary molar was common with a greater prevalence in maxillary first molars. More ovoid root canal outlines were found apically. Root canal outlines remained consistent from one level to the next in 76% of the roots. Conclusion: This study showed the complexity of root canal system in primary molars. Abstract

2D laser scanners have been widely used for accomplishing a number of challenging AI and robotics tasks such as mapping of large environments and localization in highly dynamic environments. However, using only one 2D laser scanner could be insufficient and less reliable for accomplishing tasks in 3D environments. The problem could be solved using multiple 2D laser scanners or a 3D laser scanner for performing 3D perception. Unfortunately, the cost of such 3D sensing systems is still too high for enabling AI and robotics applications. In this paper, we propose to use a 2D laser scanner and a stereo camera for accomplishing simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) in 3D indoor environments in which the 2D laser scanner is used for SLAM and the stereo camera is used for 3D mapping. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed system is lower cost yet effective, and the obstacle detection rate is significant improved compares to using one 2D laser scanner for mapping. Abstract

Based on the value chain model of competition strategy theory, this paper explores the existing strategic alliances for technological education in Taiwan and uses the field of information management as an example to build a multiple developmental model for inter-school strategic alliances. The research methods include panel discussions and surveys. The paper can be divided into three major parts: Part one describes the status quo of strategic alliances for technological education in Taiwan; Part Two introduces a multiple developmental model formed by the teachers' professional development; Part Three uses an empirical investigation of schools of different levels to demonstrate the effects of the above-mentioned multiple developmental model. Abstract

Background: The Asian region accounts for the highest number of internet and mobile cell phones consumers among the regions of the world. As the use of information and communications technology becomes more and more widespread, the misuse of such technology becomes a concern. Cyberbullying, or bullying using information and communications technology is an issue that youth are encountering in Asia and in other parts of the world. Students who are cyberbullied experience several detrimental psychosocial effects that detract from their ability be successful in school. In some instances, youth suicide has been linked to cyberbullying. Goals: The purpose of this article is to highlight the need for proactive media literacy initiatives that promote the ethical and responsible social use of technology by students. Results: Examples of initiatives to reduce cyberbullying and other harmful uses of social media are presented. These initiatives are targeted not just at students but at teachers, other school personnel, and parents. Abstract

In this paper, experimental and theoretical investigations on the response and collapse of 310 stainless steel tubes with different diameter-to-thickness ratios subjected to cyclic bending are discussed. The tube-bending device and curvature-ovalization measurement apparatus were used to conduct the experiment. The endochronic theory combined with the principle of virtual work and finite element software, ANSYS, were used to simulate the moment-curvature and ovalization-curvature relationships. It is shown that although the two methods lead to good simulation of the moment-curvature relationship, the endochronic theory combined with the principle of virtual work has the better simulation of the ovalization-curvature response when compared with experimental data and the simulation by ANSYS. In addition, the theoretical formulations proposed by Kyriakides and Shaw (1987) and Lee et al. (2001) were used to simulate the controlled curvature number of cycles to produce buckling relationship. It is shown that the theoretical formulations effectively simulate the experimental data. Abstract

The article discusses a study which identified and characterized a US3-like gene of duck enteritis virus (DEV). Researchers identified the US3-like gene of DEV from a DEV genomic library and confirmed its existence by cloning from DEV-infected duck embryo fibroblasts (DEF) and DNA sequencing. A generated primary antibody specific to the gene was used to detect the US3-like protein in DEV-infected duck cells. Through indirect immunofluorescence assay and regular fluorescence microscopy, in vivo expression of the US3-like protein in DEV-infected DEF was demonstrated. Indirect immunofluorescence assay and confocal microscopy were used to study the time course and subcellular localization of protein expression. Details of the study findings are provided.

Semi-structured interviewing method was employed that amounts to 22 fiction adult readers in Taipei metropolitan area. The results of this study indicated that readers' advisory service will be helpful in finding the desired fictions for the 22 adult participants who are heavy fiction readers. Abstract

• Rat kidneys were decellularized by the perfusion of detergent. • Acellular scaffolds preserved vascular, ureteric, cortical, and medullary architectures. • The functional organ was regenerated by seeding progenitor and differentiated cells. • The bioengineered kidney produced urine and reabsorbed albumin, glucose, and calcium. Patients with end-stage renal disease often need dialysis to maintain their lives because of donor organ shortage. The creation of a transplantable graft to permanently replace kidney function would overcome the organ shortage problem and the morbidity associated with immunosuppression. In the present study, we decellularized rat kidneys by the perfusion of detergent, yielding acellular scaffolds with the vascular, uretic, as well as cortical and medullary architecture. To regenerate the functional organ, we seeded tubular epithelial cells and mouse kidney progenitor cells from the ureter together with endothelial cells and mouse kidney progenitor cells from the renal artery. The renal constructs from seeded cells were cultured in a whole-organ bioreactor. After 3 months of organ culture, the seeded cells formed renal tubules, grew in the glomeruli, and some mouse kidney progenitor cells were also scattered in the interstitium. We tested the function of the bioengineered kidney with standardized perfusate in vitro. The bioengineered kidney not only produced urine but also reabsorbed albumin, glucose, and calcium. Abstract

Arsenic (As) in the aquatic environment is a considerable environmental issue, previous studies have reported the toxic effects of low concentrations (≤ 150 μg/L) of As on fish. However, limited information is available regarding the impact of low levels of As on apoptosis. To evaluate this, zebrafish embryos were exposed to different concentrations (0, 25, 50, 75, and 150 μg/L) of As (arsenite [AsIII] and arsenate [AsV]) for 120 h. Our results indicated that low concentrations of AsIII exposure significantly inhibited the survival of zebrafish larvae, and significantly increased the transcription of Caspase-9 and Caspase-3 , the ratio of Bax/Bcl-2 transcription, and protein levels of Caspase-3. In contrast, AsV decreased the ratios of Bax/Bcl-2 transcription and protein levels, as well as protein levels of Caspase-3. Abstract

In this paper, experimental and theoretical investigations of the effect of the mean moment on the response and collapse of circular thin-walled tubes subjected to cyclic bending are discussed. To highlight the influence of the mean moment effect, three different moment ratios r (minimum moment/ maximum moment) of -1, -0.5 and 0, respectively, were experimentally investigated. It has been found that the moment-curvature loop gradually shrinks with the number of cycles, and becomes stable after a few cycles for symmetric cyclic bending (r = -1). However, the moment-curvature loop exhibits ratcheting and increases with the number of cycles for unsymmetric cyclic bending (r = -0.5 or 0). In addition, although the three groups of tested specimens had three different moment ratios, when plotted in a log-log scale, three parallel straight lines describe the relationship between the controlled moment range and the number of cycles necessary to produce buckling. Finally, the endochronic theory combined with the principle of virtual work was used to simulate the relationship among the moment, curvature and ovalization of thin-walled tubes under cyclic bending. An empirical formulation was proposed for simulating the relationship between the moment range and the number of cycles necessary to produce buckling for thin-walled tubes subjected to cyclic bending with different moment ratios. 47. Water Transport during Freezing of Human Dermal Fibroblast as Affected by Various Freezing Rates.

Abstract

In order to predict optimal freezing processes for the cryopreservation of human dermal fibroblasts, knowledge of fundamental cryobiological characteristics including cell osmotic characteristics is required. In this study, the osmotic characteristics of human dermal fibroblasts were experimentally measured. The cell volume was 5100 μm3, and the relative diameter was 21 μm, at isotonic osmolality. The cell volume change was also measured after the cells were exposed and equilibrated to different anisosmotic conditions. It was found that the cell volume was a linear function of the reciprocal of the extracellular osmolality (Boyle–van't Hoff plot). The nonosmotic volume of the cell was 36 of the isotonic volume of the cells. Then these parameters including the nonosmotic volume of the cell were used in the water transport model to simulate water transport of fibroblasts at various freezing rates between 0.01–50°Cmin. Abstract

Nickel-titanium (Ni-Ti) instruments are widely used in adult endodontics as an efficient technique, but are rarely used for endodontic treatment for primary molars. To explore the feasibility of using Ni-Ti rotary instruments for root canal preparation in primary molars, 51 primary molars with intact root apex in 22 children, who ranged in age from 3.2 years to 7.7 years, were treated. A modified protocol for ProTaper® Ni-Ti rotary files using only two instruments (SX and S2) was used for root canal preparation, and canals were filled with a calcium hydroxide-iodoform paste. All teeth were restored with stainless steel crowns. Postoperative radiographs were taken immediately following treatment and at 3-month intervals. Success or failure was assessed based on clinical and radiographic criteria. We found that the success rate of endodontic treatment for primary molars using Ni-Ti instrument for root canal preparation was 95% at the 12-month recall examination. We conclude that with the modified protocol, ProTaper® Ni-Ti rotary files can be safely and efficiently applied for root canal preparation in primary molars. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

49. Where Do Graduating Pediatric Residents Seek Practice Positions?

Abstract

Objective.—To profile the characteristics of areas that graduating pediatric residents target in their job searches and to explore whether residents applying to primary care markets with higher pediatrician supplies experience job-search difficulty. Study Design.—A national random sample of 500 graduating categorical pediatric residents was surveyed. The communities that the pediatric residents targeted for jobs were linked to local-area characteristics by using Dartmouth Primary Care Service Areas (PCSAs), which are discrete markets that represent patient travel patterns for primary care services, PCSA population and providers were characterized by using data from the 2000 US Census and American Medical Association/American Osteopathic Association Physician Masterfiles, Results.—A total of 308 graduating residents (62%) completed the survey. Of the respondents, 136 (44%) applied for general-practice positions. The characteristics of the PCSAs that residents applied to differed from the PCSAs without an application. Residents' first-choice areas had higher ratios of general pediatricians, had higher median household incomes, and were more likely to be urban areas. Residents applying to higher-supply areas were significantly more likely to report moderate or considerable difficulty in their job searches than were residents applying to lower-supply areas. Residents applying to medium- and higher-supply areas sent out more total applications for positions and received lower starting salaries than did residents applying to lower-supply areas. Conclusions.—Residents continue to prefer high-supply areas in their job searches, despite experiencing greater search difficulty in these areas.
