Objective:To examine the impact of relationship status on levels of stress, anxiety, and depression during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic to identify relationship status groups who are at greater risk of mental health difficulties.Methods:The sample was drawn from individuals who subscribed to the Text4Hope program, a cognitive behavioral therapy inspired text messaging service developed to support Albertans during the COVID-19 pandemic. A survey link was sent to the subscribers to ascertain their relationship status and assess psychopathology using the Perceived Stress Scale-10 (PSS-10), Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-item (GAD-7) scale, and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). Data analysis was carried out using SPSS-26 for descriptive statistics.Results:Within the first 6 weeks of the pandemic, 8267 of 44·992 subscribers responded to the online survey giving a response rate of 19.4%. Mean scores on the PSS, GAD-7, and PHQ-9 were highest among those who were single and lowest among those who were widowed. Overall, mean scores on the PHQ-9 were higher in groups who self-identified as separated or divorced when compared with groups who identified as having partners, including the categories of married or cohabiting.Conclusions:Relationship status during the COVID-19 pandemic has an influence on the mental health of individuals. Our findings highlight relationship groups at risk of mental health problems during the pandemic and for whom treatments and mitigation should be targeted.

The psychiatrist workforce has been identified as an area in need of development, especially in low- to middle-income countries. The purpose of this project is to assess the perceptions of Ghanaian medical students of a novel mental health inter-medical school speaking competition on career interest in psychiatry and mental health education and advocacy. The study employed quantitative and qualitative methods in a cross-sectional design. A paper-based survey was administered to medical students from four schools in Ghana, and focus groups were conducted. A 52% response rate (545/1041 fifth- and sixth-year medical students from the four public medical schools in Ghana) was achieved. The competition was successful in stimulating interest in psychiatry as a subject (25%) and as a career (14%) and was viewed as serving an important public health and mental health advocacy function (65% and 66% respectively). The competition stimulated interest in students who were undecided or had previously ruled out psychiatry specialization, in both those who had and had not already completed a psychiatry clerkship (23% and 13% before and after completing a clinical rotation in psychiatry, respectively). Overall, 29% of respondents who participated in at least one competition-related activity reported that the competition stimulated their interest in psychiatry, compared to 4% who did not participate in any competition-related activity (Ӽ2= 80, p= 0.0). Analysis of focus group content echoed these themes and highlighted opportunities for improvement. The innovative public speaking competition was successful in stimulating interest in psychiatry and furthering mental health education and advocacy. Implications are discussed.

Refugee women in Canada are at increased risk of postpartum depression (PPD) compared with Canadian-born women. Physicians specializing in women's health are in a unique position to intervene with refugee women experiencing PPD. Although there are common contributors to the development of PPD in both Canadian-born and refugee women, refugee women face a number of additional barriers to treatment. These can include factors unique to the refugee experience (e.g., family separation, uncertainty regarding legal status, social mores of the new country) as well as social determinants of health (e.g., poverty, language barriers, barriers to accessing health care). Some authors have argued that all recent immigrant women who are pregnant should be considered at risk for developing PPD and have stressed the importance of early intervention with this group. This commentary argues that effective strategies to address the needs of women refugees who are pregnant focus on the following areas: early identification of women at risk, advocacy efforts, and mitigation of broader relevant social factors (e.g., food insecurity, poverty, lack of social supports). In addition to these strategies, more research is needed to identify how factors interact to increase the risk of PDD in women refugees and to identify factors that protect against the development of PPD in this group.
