Most thermal radiation problems are analyzed in a "forward" manner, in which the aim is to predict the response of a system based on well-defined boundary conditions. In practice, however, many thermal radiation problems are inverse problems. For example, the goal of many furnace design problems is to find a configuration that realizes a particular irradiation profile on a target, while in measurement problems, transmitted or reflected radiation measured with sensors at a boundary may be used to infer the properties of matter within the boundary. Such inverse problems are often mathematically ill-posed because they may have multiple solutions or no solution at all. Consequently, analyzing these types of problems is more complex than for "forward" problems. In this review, we examine the various types and characteristics of inverse problems, outline standard inverse solution methods for them, and review the historical and contemporary literature.

IMPORTANCE: Statins reduce the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events, but less than one-half of individuals in America who meet guideline criteria for a statin are actively prescribed this medication. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether nudges to clinicians, patients, or both increase initiation of statin prescribing during primary care visits. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cluster randomized clinical trial evaluated statin prescribing of 158 clinicians from 28 primary care practices including 4131 patients. The design included a 12-month preintervention period and a 6-month intervention period between October 19, 2019, and April 18, 2021. INTERVENTIONS: The usual care group received no interventions. The clinician nudge combined an active choice prompt in the electronic health record during the patient visit and monthly feedback on prescribing patterns compared with peers. The patient nudge was an interactive text message delivered 4 days before the visit. The combined nudge included the clinician and patient nudges. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: The primary outcome was initiation of a statin prescription during the visit. RESULTS: The sample comprised 4131 patients with a mean (SD) age of 65.5 (10.5) years; 2120 (51.3%) were male; 1210 (29.3%) were Black, 106 (2.6%) were Hispanic, 2732 (66.1%) were White, and 83 (2.0%) were of other race or ethnicity, and 933 (22.6%) had atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. In unadjusted analyses during the preintervention period, statins were prescribed to 5.6% of patients (105 of 1876) in the usual care group, 4.8% (97 of 2022) in the patient nudge group, 6.0% (104 of 1723) in the clinician nudge group, and 4.7% (82 of 1752) in the combined group. During the intervention, statins were prescribed to 7.3% of patients (75 of 1032) in the usual care group, 8.5% (100 of 1181) in the patient nudge group, 13.0% (128 of 981) in the clinician nudge arm, and 15.5% (145 of 937) in the combined group. In the main adjusted analyses relative to usual care, the clinician nudge significantly increased statin prescribing alone (5.5 percentage points; 95% CI, 3.4 to 7.8 percentage points; P = .01) and when combined with the patient nudge (7.2 percentage points; 95% CI, 5.1 to 9.1 percentage points; P = .001). The patient nudge alone did not change statin prescribing relative to usual care (0.9 percentage points; 95% CI, −0.8 to 2.5 percentage points; P = .32). CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: Nudges to clinicians with and without a patient nudge significantly increased initiation of a statin prescription during primary care visits. The United States is experiencing a mental health (MH) crisis with limited resources to meet demands. We established a 5-bed psychiatric overflow unit (POU) within the emergency department (ED) as a care alternative.

The North Sea has reached an ultra-mature state as a petroleum basin, entering a phase of infrastructure-led exploration in an attempt to extend the economic lives of the main fields and reduce the rate of production decline. At the same time, the transition to a future low-carbon use of the basin is also in progress. As the papers in this volume demonstrate, in order to find, appraise and develop the mostly smaller near-field opportunities as well as making sure to grasp the opportunities of the near-future energy transition, a regional understanding of the North Sea is still critical. Even more so, a cross-border approach is essential because: (1) some of the plays currently being targeted have a clear cross-border element; (2) it allows a comparison of stratigraphic names throughout the entire basin; and (3) it enables explorers to learn lessons from one part of the rift to be applied somewhere else.This volume offers an up-to-date ‘geology-without-borders’ view of the stratigraphy, sedimentology, tectonics and oil-and-gas exploration trends of the entire North Sea Basin. The challenges associated with data continuity and nomenclature differences across median lines are discussed and mitigated. Examples of under-exploited cross-border plays and discoveries are discussed.

Targeting the renin‐angiotensin system and optimizing tacrolimus exposure are both postulated to improve outcomes in renal transplant recipients (RTRs) by preventing interstitial fibrosis/tubular atrophy (IF/TA). In this multicenter, prospective, open‐label controlled trial, adult de novo RTRs were randomized in a 2 × 2 design to low‐ vs standard‐dose (LOW vs STD) prolonged‐release tacrolimus and to angiotensin‐converting enzyme inhibitors/angiotensin II receptor 1 blockers (ACEi/ARBs) vs other antihypertensive therapy (OAHT). There were 2 coprimary endpoints: the prevalence of IF/TA at month 6 and at month 24. IF/TA prevalence was similar for LOW vs STD tacrolimus at month 6 (36.8% vs 39.5%; P= .80) and ACEi/ARBs vs OAHT at month 24 (54.8% vs 58.2%; P= .33). IF/TA progression decreased significantly with LOW vs STD tacrolimus at month 24 (mean [SD] change, +0.42 [1.477] vs +1.10 [1.577]; P= .0039). Across the 4 treatment groups, LOW + ACEi/ARB patients exhibited the lowest mean IF/TA change and, compared with LOW + OAHT patients, experienced significantly delayed time to first T cell–mediated rejection. Renal function was stable from month 1 to month 24 in all treatment groups. No unexpected safety findings were detected. Coupled with LOW tacrolimus dosing, ACEi/ARBs appear to reduce IF/TA progression and delay rejection relative to reduced tacrolimus exposure without renin‐angiotensin system blockade. The prevalence and progression of interstitial fibrosis and tubular atrophy over 24 months is reduced in adult de novo kidney transplant recipients who receive low‐dose prolonged release tacrolimus combined with renin‐angiotensin system (RAS) blockers compared to patients who receive low‐dose tacrolimus without RAS blockade or patients who receive standard dose tacrolimus with or without RAS blockade.

Using weak value amplification angular resolution limits, we theoretically investigate the gravitational sensing of objects. By inserting a force-sensing pendulum into a weak value interferometer, the optical response can sense accelerations to a few 10’s of zepto-g $$\hbox {Hz}^{-1/2}$$Hz-1/2, with optical powers of 1 mW. We convert this precision into range and mass sensitivity, focusing in detail on simple and torsion pendula. Various noise sources present are discussed, as well as the necessary cooling that should be applied to reach the desired levels of precision.

Development of a small volume continuous process that used a combination of batch and flow unit operations to manufacture the small molecule oncolytic candidate merestinib is described. Continuous processing was enabled following the identification and development of suitable chemical transformations and unit operations. Aspects of the nascent process control strategy were evaluated in the context of a 20 kg laboratory demonstration campaign, executed in walk-in fume hoods at a throughput of 5–10 kg of active pharmaceutical ingredient per day. The process comprised an automated Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling reaction, a nitro-group hydrogenolysis, a continuous amide bond formation, and a continuous deprotection. Three of the four steps were purified using mixed-suspension, mixed-product removal crystallizations. Process analytical technology enabled real-time or nearly real-time process diagnostics. Findings from the demonstration campaign informed a second process development cycle as well as decision making for what steps to implement using continuous processing in a proximate manufacturing campaign, which will be described in part 2 of this series.

The measurement of extremely small displacements is of utmost importance for fundamental studies and practical applications. One way to estimate a small displacement is to measure the Doppler shift generated in light reflected off a moving object, converting a displacement measurement into a frequency measurement. Here we show a sensitive device capable of measuring μHz/Hz Doppler frequency shifts corresponding to tens of femtometer displacements for a mirror oscillating at 2 Hz. While the Doppler shift measured is comparable to other techniques, the position sensitivity is orders of magnitude better, and operates over several orders of magnitude of Doppler frequency range. In addition, unlike other interferometric techniques, our device is phase insensitive, making it unusually robust to noise.

We examine the effect of different sources of technical noise on inverse weak value-based precision phase measurements. We find that this type of measurement is similarly robust to technical noise as related experiments in the weak value regime. In particular, the measurements considered here are robust to additive Gaussian white noise and angular jitter noise commonly encountered in optical experiments. Additionally, we show the same techniques used for precision phase measurement can be used with the same technical advantages for optical frequency measurements.

We create an optical frequency, polarization-independent, narrow bandpass filter of 1.3 GHz (3 dB bandwidth), using the steep dispersion near the rubidium D_1 atomic transitions within a prism-shaped vapor cell. This enables us to clean the amplified spontaneous emission from a laser by more than 3 orders of magnitude. Such a filter could find uses in fields such as quantum information processing and Raman spectroscopy.

We present an interferometric technique for measuring ultrasmall tilts. The information of a tilt in one of the mirrors of a modified Sagnac interferometer is carried by the phase difference between the counter-propagating laser beams. Using a small misalignment of the interferometer, orthogonal to the plane of the tilt, a bimodal (or two-fringe) pattern is induced in the beam’s transverse power distribution. By tracking the mean of such a distribution, using a split detector, a sensitive measurement of the phase is performed. With 1.2 mW of continuous-wave laser power, the technique has a shot noise limited sensitivity of 56  frad/Hz and a measured noise floor of 200  frad/Hz for tilt frequencies above 2 Hz. A tilt of 200 frad corresponds to a differential displacement of 4.0 fm in our setup. The novelty of the protocol relies on signal amplification due to the misalignment and on good performance at low frequencies. A noise floor of about 70  prad/Hz is observed between 2 and 100 mHz.

We propose precision measurements of ultra-small angular velocities of a mirror within a modified Sagnac interferometer, where the counter-propagating beams are spatially separated, using the recently proposed technique of almost-balanced weak values amplification (ABWV) [Phys. Rev. Lett.116, 100803 (2016)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.116.100803]. The separation between the two beams provides additional amplification with respect to using collinear beams in a Sagnac interferometer. Within the same setup, the weak-value amplification technique is also performed for comparison. Much higher amplification factors can be obtained using the almost-balanced weak values technique, with the best one achieved in our experiments being as high as 1.2×10^7. In addition, the amplification factor monotonically increases with decreasing of the post-selection phase for the ABWV case in our experiments, which is not the case for weak-value amplification (WVA) at small post-selection phases. Both techniques consist of measuring the angular velocity. The sensitivity of the ABWV technique is ∼38  nrad/s per averaged pulse for a repetition rate of 1 Hz and ∼33  nrad/s per averaged pulse for the WVA technique.

The common methods for finding the local radiative flux divergence in participating media through solution of the radiative transfer equation are outlined. The pros and cons of each method are discussed in terms of their speed, ability to handle spectral properties and scattering phenomena, as well as their accuracy in different ranges of media transport properties. The suitability of each method for inclusion in the energy equation to efficiently solve multi-mode thermal transfer problems is discussed. Finally, remaining topics needing research are outlined.

We evaluate the advantages of performing cross-phase modulation (XPM) on a very-far-off-resonance atomic system. We consider a ladder system with a weak (few-photon level) control coherent field imparting a conditional nonlinear phase shift on a probe beam. We find that by coupling to an optical resonator, the optimal XPM is enhanced proportional to the finesse of the resonator by a factor of F/4π. We present a semiclassical description of the system and show that the phenomenon is optimal in the self-defined condition of off-resonance effective cooperativity equal to one.

Toward the goal of achieving broadband and omnidirectional invisibility, we propose a method for practical invisibility cloaking. We call this “digital cloaking,” where space, angle, spectrum, and phase are discretized. Experimentally, we demonstrate a two-dimensional (2D) planar, ray optics, digital cloak by using lenticular lenses, similar to “integral imaging” for three-dimensional (3D) displays. Theoretically, this can be extended to a good approximation of an “ideal” 3D cloak. With continuing improvements in commercial digital technology, the resolution limitations of a digital cloak can be minimized.

Outcrop analogs are routinely used to constrain models of subsurface fluvial sedimentary architecture built through stochastic modeling or interwell sand-body correlations. Correlability models are analog-based quantitative templates for guiding the well-to-well correlation of sand bodies, whereas indicator variograms used as input to reservoir models can be parameterized from data collected from analogs, using existing empirical relationships. This study tests the value and limitations of adopting analog-informed correlability models and indicator variogram models and assesses the effect and significance of analog choice in subsurface workflows for characterizing fluvial reservoirs. A 3.2-km (2-mi)-long architectural panel based on a virtual outcrop from the Cretaceous Blackhawk Formation (Wasatch Plateau, Utah) has been used to test the methodologies. Vertical dummy wells have been constructed across the panel, and the intervening fluvial architecture has been predicted using correlability models and sequential indicator simulations. The correlability and indicator variogram models employed to predict the outcrop architecture have been compiled using information drawn from an architectural database. These models relate to (1) analogs that partially match with the Blackhawk Formation in terms of depositional setting and (2) empirical relationships relating statistics on depositional element geometries and spatial relations to net-to-gross ratio, based on data from multiple fluvial systems of a variety of forms. The forecasting methods are assessed by quantifying the mismatch between predicted architecture and outcrop observations in terms of the correlability of channel complexes and static connectivity of channel deposits. Results highlight the effectiveness of correlability models as a check for the geologic realism of correlation panels and the value of analog-informed indicator variograms as a valid alternative to variogram model parameterization through geostatistical analysis of well data. This work has application in the definition of best-practice use of analogs in subsurface workflows; it provides insight into the typical degree of realism of analog-based predictions of reservoir architecture, as well as the effect of analog choice, and draws attention to associated pitfalls. Objectives: Balloon dilation is generally considered first-line treatment for airway stenosis. Some dilation systems utilize a compliant balloon that can conform around rigid structures. Others use a noncompliant balloon that does not conform, allowing for dilation of more rigid stenoses. We hypothesized that subglottic dilation with a noncompliant balloon increases the likelihood of fracture of the cricoid when compared to a compliant balloon.Methods: Three fresh human cricoid cartilages were placed in a universal testing system to determine the expansile force necessary for cricoid fracture. Using these data, a 3D printer was used to construct a synthetic cricoid model possessing near identical physical characteristics to the human cricoid. Simulated dilation was then performed on the model using a compliant and a noncompliant balloon.Results: Human cricoid fracture occurred at 97.25 N (SD = 8.34), and the synthetic cricoid model fractured at 100.10 N (SD = 7.32). Both balloons fractured the model in every replicate experiment. Mean balloon internal pressure at fracture was 7.67 ATM (SD = 1.21) for the compliant balloon and 11.34 ATM (SD = 1.29) for the noncompliant balloon.Conclusions: These data show that fracture of the cricoid is a valid concern in balloon dilation procedures where the balloon spans the subglottis. Furthermore, the hypothesis was rejected in that the compliant balloon system was at least as likely to fracture the cricoid model as the noncompliant.

The growing recognition that entanglement is not exclusively a quantum property, and does not even originate with Schrödinger’s famous remark about it [Proc. Cambridge Philos. Soc.31, 555 (1935)PCPSA40008-198110.1017/S0305004100013554], prompts the examination of its role in marking the quantum-classical boundary. We have done this by subjecting correlations of classical optical fields to new Bell-analysis experiments and report here values of the Bell parameter greater than B=2.54. This is many standard deviations outside the limit B=2 established by the Clauser–Horne–Shimony–Holt Bell inequality [Phys. Rev. Lett.23, 880 (1969)10.1103/PhysRevLett.23.880PRLTAO0031-9007], in agreement with our theoretical classical prediction, and not far from the Tsirelson limit B=2.828…. These results cast a new light on the standard quantum-classical boundary description, and suggest a reinterpretation of it.

We show how one can demonstrate continuous-variable Einstein–Podolsky–Rosen (EPR) steering without needing to characterize entire measurement probability distributions. To do this, we develop a modified Fano inequality useful for discrete measurements of continuous variables and use it to bound the conditional uncertainties in continuous-variable entropic EPR-steering inequalities. With these bounds, we show how one can hedge against experimental limitations including a finite detector size, dead space between pixels, and any such factors that impose an incomplete sampling of the true measurement probability distribution. Furthermore, we use experimental data from the position and momentum statistics of entangled photon pairs in parametric downconversion to show that this method is sufficiently sensitive for practical use.
