Little information exists about the degree of efficacy of the several nonoperative treatments, such as manipulation and casting, used in correcting the pathology of the virgin clubfoot deformity. The steps in the correction of the displacements and anomalies of the skeletal components have never been visualized. The method reported to have the best long-term results is that of Ponseti. A magnetic resonance imaging protocol was devised to image the described chondroosseous abnormalities of the virgin clubfoot deformity and to illustrate the changes that occur with the Ponseti method of treatment. Scans were performed at the beginning of, in the middle of, and at the end of treatment. Images obtained with this protocol largely agree with postmortem studies of clubfeet. All of the major chondroosseous pathology could be visualized in vivo. With Ponseti treatment, all the abnormalities seen on the initial scans either improved markedly or corrected completely. Treatment resulted in correction not only of the abnormal relationships of the tarsal bones, but also of the abnormal shapes of the individual tarsal osteochondral anlages, probably because of the changes in growth resulting from the changes in mechanical loading of fast-growing tissues.

New design approaches that combine analog and digital functions on one MOS LSI chip are lowering the cost and size and improving the reliability of such circuits as linear amplifiers, AZD and DZA converters, and precision frequency filters. Instead of the conventional multichip and hybrid designs, analog circuits are being fabricated with the same high-density MOS/LSI processes employed for such standard components as digital logic, memory, and microprocessors.

The dominant factors involved in a comparison of memory component technologies depend somewhat on the storage capacity required in a single independently accessable module. Here we make a distinction between small memories and large memories, with the dividing line taken at 104 bits, and between large memories and file or archive memories with a division at about 108 bits.

A 66-year-old man without symptoms, referred for the treatment of moderate hypertension, was found to have a right atrial mass by two-dimensional echocardiography. On transesophageal echocardiography two masses were detected on the tricuspid valve, the first one on the posterior leaflet and the second smaller one on the anterior leaflet. These findings were confirmed at surgery. Histologic analysis revealed that the masses represented papillary fibroelastomas.

The IEEE Journal of Solid-State Circuits was founded and first published in 1966 under the editonal leadership of James D. Meindl. Professor Meindl and his Associate Editors over the past five years have brought us an interesting, growing, and broadly useful journal. Recently Prof. Meindl asked to be relieved of the Editorship. Associate Editors Roger R. Webster and Mark R. Barber also have requested retirement. On behalf of the entire readership, I want to thank them for their excellent service. The IEEE Solid-State Circuits Council, sponsoring body for this Journal, has asked me to become the new Editor. Robert V. Garver and Arthur W. Lo have agreed to continue as Associa te Editors; I am grateful for their experienced help. J. Stephen Brugler and Virgil I. Johannes have accepted appointment as new Associate Editors. We will do our best to maintain the high standards established in the first five years' publication of the IEEE Journal of Solid-State Circuits.

The electrocardiographic (ECG) criteria for left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) i.e., Romhilt-Estes (RE) score, Sokolow and Lyon (SL) and Cornell (C) have poor sensitivity in blacks necessitating the development of race-specific ECG criteria for LVH. Therefore, we studied 225 consecutive black patients (pts) requiring echocardiograms in order to develop a race-specific ECG criteria for LVH. Eighty ECG variables were tested. LVH was defined by left ventricular mass index (LVMI) ≥ 131g/m2in men or ≥ 110g/m2in women. There were equal number of men and women with a mean age of 57.6±15.4. Using univariate and multivariate analysis, four ECG variables and their cut-off points (i.e., amplitude of R wave in L3≥ 0.2 mV, amplitude of S wave in V3≥ 1.5 mV, ST depression in V6≥ 0.1 mV, negative P wave in V1≥ 0.1 mV) were identified that best fit the model for LVH. A 14 point-score system was derived using the beta coefficient for each of the categorical variables.
