Background:Classic articles are defined as research papers with a total citation of one thousand or more. The present study is to identify and analyse the characteristics of the classic articles in apoptosis research.Method:Classic articles with total of 1,000 or more citations from Web of Science Core Collection since year of publication to the end of 2017 were basically assessed regarding their document types, languages, journals, and Web of Science categories within 1900 to 2017.Result:The study showed 418 classic documents in apoptotic research including 260 articles published between 1972 and 2012. The most productive Web of Science category was multidisciplinary sciences. Naturepublished most of these classic articles followed by Cell, and Science. The most productive country and institution were United States and Harvard University respectively. The author S.J. Korsmeyer from Harvard University was the most productive in apoptosis field and published 13 classic apoptosis articles while the author J.C Reed had more potential to publish classic apoptosis articles in future. The author J.C. Reed and V.A. Fadok had equal potential to publish the same number of classic articles as first and corresponding author. Article of Kerr et al. in 1972 was the most popular and cited apoptosis article. The most impact article in 2017 was article entitled “Tumor-associated B7-H1 promotes T-cell apoptosis: A potential mechanism of immune evasion” by Dong et al. in 2002.Conclusion:This study identified the most industrious authors, institutions, and countries in the field of apoptosis research. It also revealed the historical and discoveries related to the pathophysiology of apoptosis as well as the most impact publications on apoptotic studies.

This study aimed to evaluate the tendency of insomnia articles in SCI-EXPANDED database. Data was obtained from the online version of Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI-EXPANDED) database in the Web of Science Core Collection of Clarivate Analytics within the publication year from 1991 to 2018. The publications were assessed regarding their document types, languages, and journals. We used three citation indicators such as C2018, TC2018, and CPP2018to determine the citation received by publications. We used the Y-index method formulated by Ho. The study found 16,478 insomnia documents within 15 document types indexed in the Web of Science, and articles type was used most constituting 66% (10,801) of the documents. Ninety-five percent of the articles were published in English. The journal of Sleeppublished most of the insomnia article then followed by Sleep Medicine. The 30% of 10,801 articles were published in the top category of clinical neurology. The G7 countries published most of the insomnia articles. The most productive country and institution was United States and Harvard University respectively. The article entitled “A new method for measuring daytime sleepiness: The Epworth sleepiness scale” published by Johns in 1991was the most cited article with TC2018of 7,191 and C2018of 661 citations. The most industrious and had more potential to published insomnia articles was M.M. Ohayon. Moreover, the study showed that most of the insomnia articles were related to depression, anxiety, cancer, and schizophrenia. Insomnia is a serious problem with synergistic effects for normal body health. Bibliometric method can help researchers to have comprehensive knowledge on insomnia and initiate an orientation for further research so as to solve a problem. Furthermore, it may also help researchers to determine the impact of insomnia publications as well as to identify relevant research groups in the field of insomnia.

A bibliometric analysis was conducted to evaluate the global scientific output of KSHV/HHV8 research in the Science Citation Index Expanded from 1991 to 2016. The publications were analysed in terms of document type, language of publication, trends in publication, journals, Web of Science categories, and publications of countries, institutions, and authors. The results showed that Journal ofVirology led 610 journals. The researchers focused on the category of virology. The USA took the lead position among 92 countries with 58% of all the KSHV/HHV8 articles. Top ten productive institutions were all from the USA. National Cancer Institute, University of California, San Francisco, and Harvard University from the USA led top three the institutions. A comprehensive analysis of keywords revealed that HIV, lymphoma, and EBV were recent foci. The proportion of number of single institution articles : number of nationally collaborative articles : number of internationally collaborative articles (S : N : I) was used to compare performance of institutions. Y-index was also applied to evaluate authors’ publication performance. Chang’s group published the first in KSHV/HHV8 research field.

This study aimed to analyze the characteristics of artificial intelligence-related publications in Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIEXPANDED) from 1991 to 2018. The analyzed aspects covered distribution of annual publications, citations per publication, journals, Web of Science categories, countries, institutions, as well as research foci and their trends. A total of 13,251 artificial intelligence-related articles were found. Articles were published in a wide range of journals and Web of Science categories. The United States took the lead position in total, single country, international collaboration, and first, corresponding, and single author articles as well as citations per publication among 119 countries. Chinese Academy of Sciences in China, Islamic Azad University in Iran, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in USA were the three most productive institutions. MIT had higher citations per publication. An international collaborative article by authors from Canada, the United States, and Switzerland was the most frequently cited article with the most total citations from Web of Science Core Collection since publication through the end of 2018. Results from word cluster analysis showed that models, neural networks, learning, and prediction were the most popular topics and features, classification, and optimization might be focus in artificial intelligence research.

The present study is to identify and analyse the characteristics of the highly cited articles in Web of Science category of health policy and services, within the publication year from 1923 to 2017 based on Social Science Citation Index. Highly cited articles that have been cited 100 times or more from Web of Science Core Collection since their publication year to the end of 2017 were analyzed. Publication year, authors, institutions, countries, journals, and citation life cycles were used to evaluate the publication performance of the highly cited articles. Four citation indicators were applied to evaluate highly cited articles. Six publication indicators were also used to compare performance of countries and institutions. A publication performance indicator, the Y-index, was applied to assess publication potential and the characteristics of authors. A relationship between number of articles in each year and their citations per publication by years was proposed for distribution of highly cited articles. Results showed that highly cited articles published in journals with not only higher journal impact factor but also lower one. The US and Harvard University ranked top in six publication indicators respectively. Y-index results showed that J.H. Hibbard had highly cited articles publication potential. In addition, each of the high impact classic articles in 2017 were summarized.

This study aimed to identify and analyze the characteristics of highly cited articles in phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) research using the Science Citation Index Expanded from 1900 to 2016. Altogether 1,922 highly cited papers in seven document types with cited at least 100 times since publication to the end of 2016 from Web of Science Core Collection were found, and a total of 1,556 highly cited articles were published from 1990 to 2014. The articles were analysed in terms of document type, language of publication, trends in publication, journals, Web of Science categories, and publications of countries, institutions, and authors. The results showed that Journal of Biological Chemistryled 211 journals. The top three categories were biochemistry and molecular biology, cell biology, and oncology. The USA took the lead position among 43 countries with 67% of all the highly cited articles, and Harvard University of the USA with 14% of all highly cited articles was the most productive institution. A comprehensive analysis of keywords revealed that activation, pathway, Akt, and apoptosis were recent foci. In addition, classic articles with more than 1,000 citations since publication to the end of 2016 are also discussed.

Which Helicobacter pyloripublications in the Web of Science are classic? This study identified classic papers by referring to the Science Citation Index Expanded, which covers 59,904 documents related Helicobacter pyloripublications in the Web of Science from 1900 to 2016. The present paper lists classic Helicobacter pyloripapers published between 1991 and 2007. Classic documents that have been cited at least 1,000 times from the Web of Science Core Collection were assessed regarding language of publication, document type publication outputs, distribution of outputs in journals and Web of Science categories, publications of authors, institutions, countries as well as citation life cycles of classic documents. An article published by Parsonnet et al. in 1991 obtained the highest number of citations from the Web of Science Core Collection during the period from its initial publication to the end of 2016. The most impactful article in 2016 was published by Uemura et al. in 2001 with 163 citations in 2016. In addition, results showed that three main research focuses in H. pyloristudy were gastric cancer, low-grade gastric lymphoma, and the CagAgene.

Machine learning (ML) has emerged as a prominent field of research in computer science and other related fields, thereby driving advancements in other domains of interest. As the field continues to evolve, it is crucial to understand the landscape of highly cited publications to identify key trends, influential authors, and significant contributions made thus far. In this paper, we present a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of highly cited ML publications. We collected a dataset consisting of the top-cited papers from reputable ML conferences and journals, covering a period of several years from 1959 to 2022. We employed various bibliometric techniques to analyze the data, including citation analysis, co-authorship analysis, keyword analysis, and publication trends. Our findings reveal the most influential papers, highly cited authors, and collaborative networks within the machine learning community. We identify popular research themes and uncover emerging topics that have recently gained significant attention. Furthermore, we examine the geographical distribution of highly cited publications, highlighting the dominance of certain countries in ML research. By shedding light on the landscape of highly cited ML publications, our study provides valuable insights for researchers, policymakers, and practitioners seeking to understand the key developments and trends in this rapidly evolving field.

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) in kidney care has seen a significant rise in recent years. This study specifically analyzed AI and ML research publications related to kidney care to identify leading authors, institutions, and countries in this area. It aimed to examine publication trends and patterns, and to explore the impact of collaborative efforts on citation metrics.

Dance performance reviews (D. P. reviews) are one document type in the Arts & Humanities Citation Index (A&HCI). In this paper we analyze D. P. reviews in Web of Science from 1992 to 2016 in terms of their languages, publication outputs, authors and, journals. The results show the reviews were written in seven languages in all (though mainly English), most were published by a single-author, and that most authors preferred to publish their works in the same journal. The most productive authors were Jack Anderson, a member of advisory board of Dance Chronicle, and Jonathan Gray who was the editor of Dancing Times. The leading topic was ballet, and Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, Romeo and Juliet, and Cinderella were typical topics for D. P. reviews. In recent years the most popular topics were Triple Bills, Double Bills, and Mixed Bills.

Contaminant bioaccumulation has long been used as a key indicator of the potential risk and toxic effects of contaminants to the environment and human health. In the present study, a bibliometric analysis based on the Science Citation Index Expanded from Thomson Reuters’ Web of Science Core Collection was carried out to gain insights into research activities and tendencies of global bioaccumulation from 1991 to 2014. Study emphases included performance of annual outputs, countries, institutions, Web of Science categories, journals, research hotspots, and articles with lasting impacts. Results indicated that annual outputs of the bioaccumulation articles increased steadily in 1991 to 2014. USA dominated the bioaccumulation field, followed by China, Canada, and France. Government agencies, such as Environment Canada and the US Environmental Protection Agency were the leading institutions in bioaccumulation research. The most prolific and promising category was environmental science, which was significantly ahead of other categories, such as toxicology, marine and freshwater biology, as well as environmental engineering. The bioaccumulation articles were dispersed in 1,267 journals, whereas half of the articles reside on 19 core journals. Research focuses and hot issues in the bioaccumulation field were evaluated by word cluster analysis. Toxic effects, exposure, risk analysis and/or assessment, as well as bioavailability of chemicals, are major concerns in the bioaccumulation field. Metals, such as mercury, cadmium, copper, lead, and arsenic, were contaminants of greatest concern, among which mercury was the most studied. Persistent organic pollutants, such as polychlorinated biphenyl, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and organochlorine compounds, were also very significant in the study of bioaccumulation. Substances with lasting impact were evaluated by citation lives of top articles. Perfluorooctane sulfonate and methylmercury have lasting impacts for their unusual routes in bioaccumulation. Moreover, methodological innovations in acquiring food chain position with stable nitrogen isotopes played an important role in bioaccumulation research.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have caused global concerns due to their toxicity and chemical reactivity in photochemical air pollution. Scientific research on the VOCs has been increasing during the past decades. To understand the high impact research, this study conducted a bibliometric analysis of highly cited articles associated with VOCs field based on the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI-EXPANDED) from 1900 to 2014. Articles with at least 100 citations from the Web of Science Core Collection were selected for analysis. Publication year, authors, institutions, countries/territories, journals, Web of Science categories, and citation life cycles were used to evaluate the publication performance of the highly cited articles. The results show that a total of 295 highly cited VOCs related articles were published in SCI-EXPANDED between 1954 and 2011. The USA was the most productive country in VOCs research, with most VOCs-specialized institutions such as University of Colorado, National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA). The Y-index assessment revealed that S.C. Lee from Hong Kong Polytechnic University and M. Phillips from Menssana Research Inc. had highest publication potential on highly cited articles and were influential scientists in VOCs field. Citation life cycles analysis indicates that the article entitled “A global model of natural volatile organic compound emissions” was the most cited work in VOCs-related studies.

The aim of this study is to identify and analyze the characteristics of the top – cited articles in the field of tribology based on the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI – EXPANDED). The parameters are: publication years, journals, Web of Science categories, authors, institutions, countries, and citation life cycle curve. Y – index is used to evaluate the publication characteristic of authors of top – cited articles. Three kinds of citations: citations in 2013, total citations, and citations in publication year were employed to characterize the top – cited articles in tribology. Top three journals are Surface & Coatings Technology, Wear, and Tribology International. IBM Corporation was the most active institution on tribology research. The G7 countries have dominated this research field in terms of number of publications. Some of the keywords such as “tribology”, “tribological”, “wear”, “friction”, “diamond – like carbon”, “carbon or DLC”, “coatings”, “materials”, and “composite” were ranked among the top keywords in all the three types of keywords analysis : Words in titles, author keywords, and KeyWords Plus.

As an emerging research direction in the field of systems and control, distributed control or decentralized control has attracted great interests of researchers in the past decade. In this paper, a bibliometric analysis of the relevant publications is presented based on the data collected from the Science Citation Index Expanded Web of Science. In particular, we make a discussion on the trend of total publications, journal distribution, top research organizations (i.e. universities and institutes), and publication performance of nations, and the focus is on highly cited articles and authors, subject categories, and the future trend of hot topics. Some key bibliometric indexes such as single country articles, first author articles, and internationally collaborative articles are employed to give us a detailed picture about the intrinsic relationship and the state of the art of distributed control publications. Finally, the statistical analysis indicates that multi-agent systems are extremely popular in recent years and will dominate the future research on distributed control.

The present study analysed quantitatively the classic papers published by Taiwanese scientists in the Science Citation Index Expanded. Documents that have been cited at least 1,000 times from Web of Science Core Collection since publication to the end of 2016 were assessed regarding their language, document type, journals, and Web of Science categories. The results showed that 59 Taiwan classic publications were found in SCI-EXPANDED between 1981 and 2014. Taiwanese scientists published more classic papers in medicine and physics related categories. Fourteen Taiwan independent classic publications were also analysied. National Taiwan University was the only had three Taiwan independent classic publications while Taipei Medical University and Overseas Chinese College of Commerce were the only private universities which published Taiwan independent classic publications. In addition, ‘high impact sleeping beauties’ and ‘Green Giant’ in Taiwan were also discussed.

A bibliometric analysis based on the Science Citation Index Expandedwas conducted to provide insights into the publication performance and research trend of quantitative structure‐activity relationship (QSAR) and quantitative structure‐property relationship (QSPR) from 1993 to 2012. The results show that the number of articles per year quadrupled from 1993 to 2006 and plateaued since 2007. Journal of Chemical Information and Modelingwas the most prolific journal. The internal methodological innovations in acquiring molecular descriptors and modeling stimulated the articles’ increase in the research fields of drug design and synthesis, and chemoinformatics; while the external regulatory demands on model validation and reliability fueled the increase in environmental sciences. “Prediction endpoints”, “statistical algorithms”, and “molecular descriptors” were identified as three research hotspots. The articles from developed countries were larger in number and more influential in citation, whereas those from developing countries were higher in output growth rates.

The h-index was also calculated in terms of the characteristics of publications. Distributions of paper titles, the author’s keywords, and KeyWords Plus at different periods were applied to evaluate research trends. The analysis showed that researchers paid most attention to groundwater and water quality parameters. Modeling and adsorption were the most popular techniques in water resources research. In addition, the relationship between the impact factor and h-index was significant for journals in the first group. The impact of the most cited articles each year were also discussed along with the article life information.

Soil has been widely used in many wastewater treatment systems, and proved to be an effective substrate for phosphorus removal and retention. It is significant to study its adsorption characteristics by using appropriate theoretical models. In this study, laterite (or red soil) was selected as an example to investigate the adsorption characteristic of phosphorus onto soil with the Langmuir, Freundlich, and Redlich–Peterson isotherms by both the linear and non-linear regression methods. The adsorption experiment was conducted at the temperatures of 283, 288, 298, and 308 K, respectively, to choose the appropriate method and obtain the credible adsorption parameters for soil adsorption equilibrium studies. The results showed that the non-linear regression method would be a better way to compare the better fit of isotherms for the adsorption of phosphorus onto laterite. Both the two-parameter Freundlich and the three-parameter Redlich–Peterson isotherms had higher coefficients of determination for the adsorption of phosphorus onto laterite at various temperatures. In addition, a relationship between Freundlich isotherm parameters and Redlich–Peterson isotherm parameters was presented.

Two main respects of the paper characteristics, performance of publication and research tendency, were analyzed. Performances of publications were assessed including document type, language, subject categories, journals, institutes, and countries. Research tendency was investigated by statistically analyzing the distribution of word in article title, author keyword, and keyword plus in diferent periods. Results show the desalination research mainly performed on subject category of chemical engineering. More specifc, research might focus on membranes related research.

This study examined nursing research performance in Taiwan from 1991 to 2004 by conducting bibliometric analysis of papers published by researchers affiliated with nursing institutes in Taiwan. Bibliometric information of papers that were published between 1991 and 2004 and had contact address including the words “Taiwan”, and “nursing” were downloaded from the ISI Web of Knowledge website. The information used for this research included number of papers, number of authors, number of references listed, impact factors of publishing journals, times cited, and whether the paper was written through international or domestic collaboration. The information was coded and tabulated. Bibliometric characteristics were compared between 1995-1999 and 2000-2004. Furthermore, an exponential model was fitted to show the past growth trend in research outputs. The results showed that there was a significant growth in quantity of papers from 1991 to 2004. In general, recent papers had averaged more authors, more domestic collaboration, more international collaboration, higher impact factors, and more references listed than earlier papers. Papers written with collaboration tended to have a higher average number of authors and more references listed, and tended to be published in journals with higher impact factors. The exponential model proved to be in good fit with the past growth pattern. The authors speculate that the recent increase in research collaboration, both internationally and domestically, may have contributed to the significant increase in output. It is not clear whether the growth in quantity of papers will continue or for how long. Based on past data, however, no sign of leveling off has been observed. More research is needed to understand what societal and individual level factors were involved in fueling such a dramatic increase in quantity in the last decade. Furthermore, as the quantity of papers has increased steadily, more focus can be placed on improving the quality of research papers.

Summary Homeopathy has been applied to clinical use since it was first presented 200 years ago. The use of the bibilometric analysis technique for examining this topic does not exist in the literature. The objective of this study is to conduct a bibliometric analysis of all homeopathy-related publications in Science Citation Index (SCI). A systematic search was performed using the SCI for publications during the period of 1991 to 2003. Selected documents included ‘Homoeopathy, Homoeopathic, Homeopathy, or Homeopathic’ as a part of the title, abstract, or keywords. Analyzed parameters included authorship, patterns of international collaboration, journal, language, document type, research address, number of times cited, and reprint author’s address. Citation analysis was mainly based on the impact factor as defined by the Journal Citation Reports (JCR) and on citations per publications (CPP), which is used to assess the impact relative to the entire field and is defined as the ratio between the average numbers of citations per publications in a certain period. Of total articles, 49% had a single author. The UK, the US, and Germany produced 71% of the total output, while European countries as a whole also contributed 65% of the total share of independent publications. English remains the dominant language, it comprised only 76%, while German contributed 18%, and the remaining where distributed among 8 European languages. More document types and languages, and fewer pages have appeared in homeopathy research. 3.5% of papers were cited more than 10 times in three years after publication, and 60% were never cited. Small-group collaboration was a popular method as co-authorship. The top 3 ranking countries of publication were the UK, the US, and Germany. The US dominated citation followed by the UK, and then Germany. In addition, a simulation model was applied to describe the relationship between the cumulative number of citations and the paper life.

Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) has become the major of health issues since its outbreak early 2003. No analyses by bibliometric technique that have examined this topic exist in the literature. The objective of this study is to conduct a bibliometric analysis of all SARS-related publications in Science Citation Index(SCI) in the early stage. A systematic search was performed using the SCI for publications since SARS outbreak early 2003. Selected documents included 'severe acute respiratory syndrome' or 'SARS' as a part of its title, abstract, or keyword from the beginning stage of SARS outbreak, March till July 8, 2003. Analysis parameters included authorship, patterns of international collaboration, journals, language, document type, research institutional address, times cited, and reprint address. Citation analysis was mainly based on impact factor as defined by Journal Citation Reports(JCR) issued in 2002 and on the actual citation impact (ACI), which has been used to assess the impact relative to the whole field and has been defined as the ratio between individual citation per publication value and the total citation per publication value. Thirty-two percent of total share was published as news features, 25% as editorial materials, 22% as articles, 13% as letters, and the remaining being biographic items, corrections, meeting abstracts, and reprints. The US dominated the production by 30% of the total share followed closely by Hong Kong with 24%. Sixty-three percent of publication was published by the mainstream countries. The SARS publication pattern in the past few months suggests immediate citation, low collaboration rate, and English and mainstream country domination in production. We observed no associations of research indexes with the number of cases.

The kinetics of four sorption systems, Cu/tree fern, Pb/tree fern, AB9/activated clay and BR18/activated clay have been studied based on the assumption of a pseudo-second order rate law. Pseudo-isotherms using the pseudo-second order kinetic expression constant have been developed to describe the four liquid-solid sorption systems. The experimental results have been analyzed using a pseudo-Langmuir and a pseudo-Redlich-Peterson isotherm. Both isotherms were found to represent the measured sorption data well. According to the evaluation using the pseudo-Langmuir equation, the monolayer sorption capacities were obtained to be 13.9, 46.6, 124 and 105 mg g−1for copper, lead, AB9 and BR18 respectively.

Abstract: A bibliometric analysis was performed to assess the quantitative trend of Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) treatment research, including intravenous injection of indomethacin and surgery. The documents studied were retrieved from the Science Citation Index (SCI) for the period from 1991 to 2002. The publication pattern concerning authorship, collaboration, original countries, citation frequency, document type, language of publication, distribution of journals, page count and the most frequently cited papers were performed. The results indicated that either treatment was not the recent emphasis of PDA research. The publishing countries of both treatments have also denoted that these researches were mostly done in Europe and North America. Both surgery and drug treatments had few international collaboration papers. English was the dominant language, and collaboration of two to six authors was the most popular level of co-authorship.
